I stayed at the Aberdeen Lodge for 4 nights and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. Pat, who is owner of the lodge was most gracious and made me feel so comfortable during my stay there. Lots of privacy, coffee is fantastic! Rooms are very clean and bed was most comfortable. Sorry to say I did not have their award winning breakfast since I would meet my sister and niece, who was staying elsewhere for breakfast. Sandy and Robin, the golden retrievers , are so friendly and adorable. I will always have fond memories of them as I sat in the garden every morning having my coffee and they would sit beside me. Hope to return to Ireland again someday, and would definitely stay at Aberdeen Lodge!!

Jamie W. was on point to find our accommodations in Dublin, a daunting task since I was the comparatively seasoned traveler. Previously, I stayed at the Castle, old and stodgy but close to the heart of the city, and the Beacon, hip and trendy but way down south in the suburb of Sandyford. He found the ideal compromise in the Aberdeen Lodge in Sandymount, which is a lot closer to the city center than the Beacon. With its facade covered in leafy foliage, the classic Edwardian guesthouse appeared to be in a much more gentrified part of town nestled in the middle of a tree-lined street (photo: http://bit.ly/2eQdq1I). It's about a ten-minute walk from the Sydney Parade DART station. You can catch a train and be at Trinity College in about fifteen minutes. It's quite charming inside with a fireplace in the parlor where one of the staff explains all the amenities, provides directions to all the attractions, and serves tea and cookies in proper fashion (photo: http://bit.ly/2gpuRXA). We stayed in a classic double room on the top floor, just three flights up, for a reasonable $162.50 per night (photo: http://bit.ly/2f9TCSA). We thought we were gonna die because there wasn't a TV in the room, but it turned out we just crashed when we came back from a day of romping like wild Irishmen. Breakfast in the conservatory was quite a treat since they offer quite a selection of traditional Irish dishes. Indeed on our first morning there, Jamie had the full Traditional Irish Breakfast with grilled bacon, fried egg, sausage, white pudding, black pudding, grilled tomato and mushrooms (photo: http://bit.ly/2fF1GP9), while I had the comparatively lighter Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Irish Salmon & Chives (photo: http://bit.ly/2gtohQA). And that was after a full spread of fruit, yogurt and baked goods like homemade scones with blackberry preserves (photo: http://bit.ly/2gtrYWj). After breakfast, we took advantage of the expansive, manicured yard in the back to plot our itineraries for the days ahead (photo: http://bit.ly/2fa1mDL). A charming place with a most accommodating staff, highly recommended.

First of all, you may wish to review this B&B on Trip Advisor since many have reviewed this many place before: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g186605-d189082-Reviews-Aberdeen_Lodge-Dublin_County_Dublin.html Now for my review. I returned to Ireland 40 years after my first trip in 1972. My father and his family are from the south and my mother's family are from the north. Since I would be staying in the north with my cousin, but traveling to the south to see my relatives, we wanted a nice place to stay for a few days. The Aberdeen Lodge is owned by Pat Halpin and Ann Keane aka The Halpin Private Hotel chain, compromised of four B&B's, I believe. Ann and Pat live at the Aberdeen so we chose to stay at that location and it was also close to my relatives who are "Halpin's" as well; too bad we're not related (smile). I actually chose this lodge because it was owned by the Halpin's and Ann Keane was so very kind to me on the phone and email. I don't recall ever being treated so well and so kindly. In a later conversation with Pat Halpin, he told me (paraphrased), "My wife and I travel extensively. We wanted to offer something different to our guests than checking them in, asking for a credit card and carting their bags to their room." So, true to his word, our bags were taken from our car and put into our room but we were escorted to the sitting room where we were offered a cup of tea which gave us a bit of a chance to transition. The sitting room was absolutely lovely as was the rest of the lodge. The place was impeccably clean, the breakfasts were sumptuous and the entire ambiance was that of peace and tranquility - something I needed desperately on this trip. The staff (including Pat) recommended restaurants, arranged for cab service and Pat even put his coat and cap on one evening and dropped us at an amazing restaurant. All the local food proprietors know the Halpin's and we got first rate service wherever we went. I would HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend this lovely B&B lodge to any wayfaring traveler.

And honestly, we were bummed it was saved for our last night. The hotel is situated alongside the canal, a few blocks from city center Dublin and is well placed for restaurants, pubs and/or exploring. The hotel has "old bones", but a lot of modern features and decor throughout the public space and guest rooms. Some of the spaces are still a bit dated, but they are well kept and clean. We were also impressed with the outlets here including the coffee/pastry window and the full service restaurant, which is gorgeous! We enjoyed the restaurant enough to enjoy two meals here in our short time on-site. The rooms were small, but well equipped, updated and laid out well. There was seating beyond the bed, which is always great. bed was comfortable and oddly enough, water pressure for the shower was best we had during our time in Ireland. Its the small things! On-site parking is available via a small parking garage. It is tough to maneuver, especially when multiple cars are moving around, so just be mindful. Service was stellar at the front desk upon arrival, during our stay and then at check out. Overall, Grand Canal may not be the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at, but it was the highlight of our Ireland trip from a hotel perspective, and we would 100% stay again when back in Dublin!

The rooms were well maintained and the decor was to die for. I wish every hotel felt this way. There are 3 bars inside the hotel as well as 2 restaurants. If you come prepared, they have a concierge and a genealogist on site to help you find your ancestors from Ireland. Many famous people and politicians have stayed in these walls as well. That said, this was a truly special time of year when they're getting ready for Christmas! They took such care and were meticulous with their decorations. It was delightful to come home to each evening. Experience: 1. They will tidy your room everyday 2. Turn down service begins around 6 pm (they will get your slipper, robe, bed, water and chocolate ready for nighttime) 3. Their small guest room includes a king size bed that is superbly fluffy. 4. The deluxe guest room has a deep tub for soaking Staff: The entire front desk staff is very helpful, welcoming and efficient. Marta was especially helpful and kind throughout my stay! As for the porters were just right with their assistance. I did always feel bad that I had not gotten any Euro on my trip, but I will mention Karl was fantastic! Always helpful and nice to talk with. Michele in the health center was informative and helped me find all of the rooms for their current gym as it's under renovation. Facilities: They have a 5 star spa on site that includes one of the best relaxation rooms I have experienced in the world. It's the view and seating that make it amazing. They give you a blanket, fruit, spa water -- all while looking over st. Stephen's park... bliss! (I went on a rainy day which added to the ambiance) The facial with Elemis product was my favorite. PRO TIP! if you're from the states and liked Elemis, there is now an Elemis outlet store at Kildare Village, which is a short train ride away. I made it there in 35 minutes. DINING: Again, 5 star experience and the restaurant is always packed. Chef makes superb food and I thoroughly enjoyed the room service of fish and chips. TONS of fish, perfectly battered and fried. If I could give the shelbourne a 10 out of 5 I would.

We arrived from an overnight flight at roughly 9:30 a.m. and they were still prepping rooms but they stored our luggage and recommended a location to grab something to eat which was very good. Upon returning about 45 minutes later our room was ready and we found the room to be meticulous with a very comfy king bed, mini fridge, tv, and ample size bathroom. I saw a few other reviews that stated the bathroom doors would not stay open but I learned that is by design and we just asked for an extra towel that we used to prop the door open when needed. It serves to point out that the entire hotel is under a complete remodel so many of the rooms and features of the hotel are shinny new. They do offer breakfast in the morning and for the evening they do have a restaurant and bar. Just walk out the front door if you want a livelier crowd and more restaurant options The location of the hotel is prime as it offers proximity the River Liffey, plenty of shops, pubs, and attractions. We walked to the Jameson (25 min walk) and Guinness (30 min walk) factories as it also gave us the ability to take in things along the walk. You are close to Trinity College and both St Patrick's and Christ Church Cathedrals. lastly, I cannot say enough about the staff, Anne at the front desk was a warm and inviting pleasure and very professional, Marvin the concierge and bellman was super helpful and pleasantly informative, the house staff was attentive and always looking to make sure we were comfortable. The Brooks comes with my highest recommendation.

Every other property I visited was warm, welcoming, and accommodating. The Gibson was the exact opposite. From the moment I arrived, the staff were cold, unhelpful, and unwelcoming. At check-in, I was handed a key with barely a word and simply pointed toward the lift. No offer to assist with luggage, no information about the hotel, no sense of hospitality whatsoever. Throughout my stay, whenever I passed through the lobby, staff either ignored me entirely or deliberately looked busy to avoid interacting. I even sat in the lobby for a while just observing, and it wasn't just me - the staff treated all guests this way. Aloof, uninterested, and uncaring. Hospitality is supposed to be about warmth and service, but here it felt like guests were an inconvenience. This hotel was the least accommodating, least hospitable, and least welcoming of my entire trip, and it wasn't even close. Ireland is known for its friendliness and warmth - but you will not find it here. Do yourself a favor and stay literally anywhere else. I strongly do not recommend the Gibson Hotel.
