Adorable little boutique hotel, stuck in an old brick schoolhouse, and refitted with gorgeous textiles. Beds are huge and have canopies(!); the bathrooms have nice fixtures and amazing showers, complete with nice detail on the tiling. The room is 10 € less than the B&B rate. Breakfast is quite nice, so if you're going to eat there, you'll get great value; if you just want cornflakes, though, it's not worth it. No free wifi (or other internet in the rooms), unfortunately. At those prices, there should be. Still, though: perfect little hotel in a great location. Very friendly; great value. I didn't want to leave!

Last year I decided to treat my mom to a long weekend vacation in Dublin, since she had never been. I chose the Schoolhouse because it was located in a quiet neighborhood, yet was close to public transportation and some tourist attractions. The hotel itself is quite nice. Our room was very large, comfortable and clean. Oh, and quiet -- we never heard a peep from any other guests. The staff were great, as well. Always friendly and super accommodating. But for us, the location was the best aspect. A 10 minute walk to Merrion Square and the hop-on/hop-off bus and a 5 minute walk to the DART station, which we took out to Howth one morning. (Highly recommended, btw!) The Aircoach also stops right outside of the hotel so getting to Dublin Airport is a breeze. We enjoyed the Schoolhouse so much, that next time I visit Dublin, I wouldn't hesitate to book here again.

The Schoolhouse Hotel was on several lists for unique places to stay in Dublin. The location is decent. It was a bit of a walk to get to Trinity College and Temple Bar but not too bad. It's not the most central location you can stay in. One perk of being a little further away was that parking at the hotel was free. It was also pretty easy to find although the entrance to the parking lot wasn't particularly intuitive. The interior of the hotel is as expected. There is a lot of character as you enter and walk down the halls. The halls are narrow and there are several doors you have to go through. It's not the best design if you have luggage. The room was a decent size but it smelled funny, didn't have much natural light (I think we were in the basement despite putting a comment in the reservation that we'd prefer to not be on the bottom floor), and was overall stuffy. I realize the whole ambiance of the place is based on it being historic but it felt extremely dated and not in an endearing way. The bed was very uncomfortable - the only reason I slept decently was exhaustion. We could also clearly hear people if they were talking down the hallway and even in the room next to us - we could hear every word they were saying and it didn't seem like they were talking particularly loudly. The shower was awkward and there didn't seem to be any ventilation in the bathroom to allow the moisture to escape. There was even some mold on the ceiling. We didn't say anything as we were only staying the one night and had been told at check in there were no other rooms available. The positive was that we had booked 2 nights so we would have a room guaranteed to be available when we arrived after our international flight and we had no issues with the very late check in (also had emailed to confirm). The people working the front desk were polite, helpful, and courteous. 2 stars.

For centuries, it was the headquarters of English (and eventually British) rule in Ireland. In 1684, a large fire destroyed a large portion of the castle. Instead of matching the original Gothic style, most of it was rebuilt using a Georgian style, similar to what you'd find in the French Palace of Versailles! It's quite the contrast. When you visit Dublin Castle, you can choose to explore it in two ways: with a self-guided tour to the state apartments or with a scheduled guided tour that visits the Viking Excavation, the Chapel Royal, and the State Apartments. When you first enter the courtyard, you'll immediately see the newer Georgian architecture in the neat red brick buildings surrounding the square. From the 13th century to the early 20th century, the castle was under British control. It served from being a royal palace and parliament to a prison. Dublin Castle was eventually handed over to General Michael Collins on the 16th of January in 1922. Collins was a soldier and a politician who lead the Irish people through their fight for Independence Dublin Castle plays a huge role in Ireland's history and a walk around the grounds is time well spent. Today the castle is a government complex and tourist attraction. Stroll through the famous Chester Beatty Library if time permits

The Back Loft is a bright and roomy multi-disciplinary loft located at the back of La Catedral Studios. It is a multi-purpose space for the arts in a reclaimed Victorian industrial loft. Refurbished to a bare minimum to preserve the raw fabric of its past time charm, this inspired space is an unconventional artists' playground which embraces any art related project. The space may be hired for art exhibitions, live art events, theatre plays and rehearsals, workshops, intimate music gigs, dance, life drawing, photo shoots, film location and functions, to mention a few. The Back Loft is particularly open to experimentations and to adventurous site-specific work, to individual and collectives' curated projects and is an ideal springboard for emerging artists. I recently attended a photo exhibition here organized by a college friend who was able to get her hands on the venue relatively easily. Since its establishment in 2005, the Back Loft has played host to a great array of events independently curated by individuals and collectives. From what she said the studios offered a nurturing and supportive environment with 24 hr/7 day access, wi-fi, visibility on the studios' blog, kitchen and chill out space, free attendance at the back loft events, participation in an open studio event at Culture Night, negotiable rates for hire of the Back Loft and free access to the Back Loft for private use. I have attended a separate function here where I witnessed the use of one projector, one sound system (mixing desk and two speakers), two microphone stands, one microphone, one upright acoustic piano and a rack of gallery spotlights to further emphasise it's unique resourcefulness. From a punter's point of view the space's great natural light as a result of sky-lights running the length of the space and original pine timber flooring provide the ideal backdrop to witness pioneering artwork like no other.

Situated behind the New Square apartments the garden provides a composed sanctuary away from the other often harried university grounds. The cherry blossom in April is a sight to savour, the pastel pinks and whites complimenting the unruffled spirit of this safe haven superbly. As the Spring draws closer you notice actors practicing plays within the garden and I was fortunate enough to see it turn into an Open Air Theatre when the official Shakespeare Company came to perform there as referred to in my opening sentence. The dramatic, vivid emerald green of the lawn and rustic auburn of the tree trunks provided a picturesque setting for this poignant performance to be carried out within. The emotion of the performance was translated well within such a stirring and unique backdrop as this creating a magical open-air festival of love, laughter and amorous adventure. Furthermore, the Elizabethan costumes worn by the actors corresponded with the romanticism attributed to the garden perfectly. With a sun-dial at the back and wrought iron birds lining the lawn this refuge from the hustle and bustle evitable within a vibrant student community as that which Trinity exudes is a wonderful place to visit. Grab a bench and enjoy an hour or two with a take away tea and enthralling book.

And honestly, we were bummed it was saved for our last night. The hotel is situated alongside the canal, a few blocks from city center Dublin and is well placed for restaurants, pubs and/or exploring. The hotel has "old bones", but a lot of modern features and decor throughout the public space and guest rooms. Some of the spaces are still a bit dated, but they are well kept and clean. We were also impressed with the outlets here including the coffee/pastry window and the full service restaurant, which is gorgeous! We enjoyed the restaurant enough to enjoy two meals here in our short time on-site. The rooms were small, but well equipped, updated and laid out well. There was seating beyond the bed, which is always great. bed was comfortable and oddly enough, water pressure for the shower was best we had during our time in Ireland. Its the small things! On-site parking is available via a small parking garage. It is tough to maneuver, especially when multiple cars are moving around, so just be mindful. Service was stellar at the front desk upon arrival, during our stay and then at check out. Overall, Grand Canal may not be the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at, but it was the highlight of our Ireland trip from a hotel perspective, and we would 100% stay again when back in Dublin!
