The window display was quite enticing, so I decided to get some to bring back home with me and to support a local business. The one staff member working was very friendly and boxed up my four choices. I selected lemon, Samoa, cookies and cream, and sugar cookie. The box held them fairly well, but the box needs a bit sturdier support frame to keep them from tipping over. Overall, they were all very good! Quite moist cake and creamy smooth frosting (albeit a bit sweet). I'm not sure which was my favorite, but I think I liked the lemon best. Great lemon flavor in both the cake and icing. The Samoa also had an interesting flavor somewhat reminiscent of the Girl Scout cookie of the same name. It's cheaper to get a box of four than it is to get a single cupcake, so we went that route. There's several flavors, which made it super hard to choose, but I eventually selected the lemon-licious and strawberry delight. Never have I ever eaten such a soft and moist cupcake! I just happened to see this place on the way to Carew Tower during our weekend stay in Cincinnati. I had to go back the next day to try one of these cupcakes. I had the Banana Pudding cupcake which was deliciously moist and had a banana pudding filling. The consistency of the cake was very different. More of a sponge cake, which I kind of like. I've had better frosting on a banana cupcake, but the ratio of frosting to cake was very good. The frosting didn't overpower the cupcake. I'm kind of amazed that I haven't tried Abby Girl's sooner. It's pink and girly and serves up one of my favorite sweet treats, the cupcake. We stumbled across here on our way back to the parking garage. Again, it's super pink and adorable and every fiber of your being will insist on stepping inside. So we did. New Year's resolutions be damned. It is clearly intended to be a catering or take-out type place, since it is a tiny space with only two four-top tables. I'm embarrassingly familiar with the franchise-type cupcakeries (Gigi's, Caramanda's, Sprinkles), and the ones made at Abby Girl Sweets are just as beautifully decorated and presented as any I've seen. In the mood for chocolate (is there ever any other mood?), we both ordered a Double Trouble Cupcake, which basically is the Hostess cupcake's hot handmade twin. Except, instead of a dry manufactured cupcake splurted with a blob of tasteless hydrogenated filling and a plastic-y chocolate icing, Abby's is a deliciously moist chocolate cake with that unmistakable homemade flavor and flat-tish top (trust me, real homemade chocolate cupcakes aren't pretty until you swirl frosting on them). The Double Trouble had a delightful creamy filling, a rich, still-soft chocolate ganache and a fun little white icing twirly on top. It was a delicious cupcake and we loved it. I almost ate the paper liner, I was trying to scrape off every moistly clinging crumb. I would strongly recommend trying one of AG's little delicious cakes. I've read where people complain that the cupcakes are too expensive, but I don't think $2.75 for a lovely little dessert or mid-day treat is expensive at all. As a home baker, I will be the first to say that good, quality ingredients (e.g., pure vanilla, quality chocolate, real butter, etc.) are NOT cheap. Try baking a batch of cupcakes at home and making them pretty and buying cute liners and tempering chocolate for ganache and you will be OK with paying $2.75 for a cupcake. read more

I visited Abby Girl recently and my wife lit up like a Christmas tree upon walking into the store - she was like a kid on Christmas. In looking at the cases, there was at least a dozen flavors, some traditional, some unique. When we ordered our half dozen cupcakes to go (4 for us, 2 to give away), the staff was very helpful on providing tips on how to manage our cupcakes in the event we were walking a long distance (it was roasting hot that day) and even offered to hold the cupcakes for us while we continued shopping around downtown. We got the cupcakes home that evening with every intent on eating just one each between my wife and me. However, our attempts proved futile. Before we knew it, all four of our cupcakes were gone in one evening (we gave the other 2 away). AbbyGirlSweets is now located on Fifth St in Downtown Cincinnati, same building as the Hilton Netherland Plaza (street level). They make "every batch from scratch." I stopped by this shop before I went to the airport. When I walked in the place smelled yummy and they had about 10 flavors to choose from. I chose 5 different ones to take with me and was advised which ones will be good to take with me. I really wanted to bring the red velvet cupcake but was told it's good for the next 3-4 hours if it's not refrigerated (because of the cream topping). They helped me choose the flavors that would be okay for my 4-hr flight. I still got the red velvet as my snack :) The cupcake was moist and the icing was nice and light. My hubby actually called them when it was already after hours and he spoke to Andrea. He said that she was very nice and patient with answering his questions. Working downtown, my bus would pass this on my way home everyday. Finally, my husband came down for lunch one day and we wandered on over and picked up our first amazing cupcakes, a double trouble (a chocolate cupcake dipped in chocolate ganache with buttercream frosting and a buttercream center) and a key lime cupcake (a vanilla cupcake with key lime frosting and a key lime filling). We fell in love. The cake was moist - not dry - and tasted delicious. The filling was just a wonderful surprise, and the icing was perfect. We fell in love immediately. They have great special flavors that come up every now and then that you just must try. And their normals are always good - I enjoy the cincy creme a lot. We did end up going with Abby Girl as our wedding cupcakery. They did an amazing job. We did three different cupcakes - double trouble, key lime, and lemon-licious. We set up the date pretty early, and the girl who I think owns it (Andrea - she was who I talked to at least) was really great to work with. She made sure everything was perfect and went right. The cupcakes were beautiful, and when they were delivered, they worked hard to try and work with our caterer to get them on trays. Our caterer didn't have the right kind, so Abby Girl let us rent their carriers then and there, which worked out perfect. They helped us set up our crazy cupcake chandelier too - which was a work of making sure it was all balanced correctly. The cupcakes were delicious, moist, and beautiful. After a rather disappointing lunch in Mt. Adams, my husband and I ventured downtown looking for a sweet treat. Abby Girl Sweets did the trick. We shared a Strawberry Blast, which is a strawberry cupcake, with bits of real strawberry in the sponge, topped with strawberry buttercream icing, and a Peanut Butter Cup, which is a chocolate cupcake topped with peanut butter icing and a miniature peanut butter cup candy. Both were outstanding; in fact, I'm not really such which was better! The sponges were incredibly moist. The bits of strawberry in the Strawberry Blast and the icing that reminded me of peanut butter fudge on the Peanut Butter Cup made both cupcakes over-the-top delicious.
