Read about ABBQ in last weekends Unation e-mail and instantly put it on my restaurants to try. Didn't make it over the weekend but made it Tuesday. We sat outside near the bar which was perfect because we could still see the TV's. There was a couple singing who were really good, and sorry I don't remember their name. We started with the Mac Bites. You can't go wrong with fried mac and cheese, so yummy. Both my husband and I chose the one meat two side meal. I had brisket, baked cowboy beans and collard greens. The brisket was soooo good it just melted in your mouth. Hubby had the sausage, collard greens, and potato casserole. He was also very pleased with his food. I'm not a fan of white sauce normally but the Alabama white sauce was really good. My very favorite though was the sauce with a little kick. We will be back again very soon. read more

Very nice place with a great family atmosphere. If my kids were younger this would be the place to go when they are feeing rowdy. Eating outside on the turf with corn hole and other things to keep their attention is a parents dream. Now about the food...Excellent! The moment you walk in you smell the bbq smoking on the huge grill outside. My first time here and I had no idea what a great place it is to watch sports. They have both indoor and outdoor seating with several TVs to watch multiple games. The brisket I ordered was on a sandwich topped with caramelized onions and cheddar cheese on a brioche bun. Very flavorful and delicious. The full bar offers an interesting array of cocktails. Many are their own creations which are unique and very good. My favorite was a frozen boozie pumpkin spice. This is now our go-to BBQ spot in Jacksonville. Been driving by it for a while and finally decided to stop. We do not eat at many BBQ restaurants as we would rather make our own. We will be back. Again and again. We ordered the platter with brisket, sausage, ribs, and 3 sides , just to get a taste of different items. The brisket had a perfect smoke ring and could be cut with a fork, literally. I traditionally do not like pork ribs with no sauce. I will eat these every time. They are tender, juicy, and do not need sauce for great flavor. One of my BBQ favorites is sausage. Their sausage is about the best I have had anywhere. Fantastic flavor with just a bit of heat. We rate BBQ restaurants more on sides than the main meats. ABBQ hits the sides dead straight on. We had the mac and cheese. It was rich, creamy, decadent. NOBODY makes it better. Most places serve beans that are nothing more than doctored canned pork n' beans. These had great flavor and you could tell no can was involved. My favorite side is greens. The ABBQ greens are absolutely great. I did not even need to add salt. That is a first ever. I tend to view restaurants not only on their food but on their bathrooms. If the bathroom is not clean, I worry about the kitchen. The bathroom was spotless. Everything was very, very clean. To top it off, the servers where on top of everything even though the restaurant was busy. Did not need to ask for anything. Can't say enough about ABBQ. Try it. You will not be sorry. read more

They didn't have valet so parking was a challenge but it was worth it.Someone greeted me at the door and explained the process to. Every BBQ has their way of doing things so I appreciated the guidance. I had the Turkey sandwhich, baked beans and a side of pickles. The portions were more than what I expected. The turkey was evenly sliced and had good flavor. The coleslaw and bacon were the icing on the cake. I never had roasted tomatoes in baked beans but I liked the element of freshness it added. From our server Christian who delivered excellent customer service, to the environment, dinner and the dessert. EVERYTHING was AMAZING!!!! We started with crispy pork rinds. Sooo good. I had The best hamburger I've ever had in my entire life, and I've had lots of burgers. The fries that came with it were also superb. My husband's brisket was also spectacular. I ordered 1/2 a Caesar salad and it was huge. It was good but i couldn't finish it. And then the key lime pie was out of rhis world. The beat key lime pie weve ever had. It is so upsetting how they really don't care about their customers. They have a 15% automatic tip, and which you can tell that the waitstaff aren't trying for the tips. Even though the food was great, me and my family waited an hour and a half to just get our food. They were understaffed, but the waitress was very apologetic and we understand it was not her fault. The food was delicious however, but there were very small portions. If you plan on going to ABBQ, I would recommend going in with low expectations. read more

Fun atmosphere and great food. For starters we had the Frito pie and great cocktails, although the bartender will make other drinks upon request. My friend and I split the daily special, a beef rib, which was well seasoned and delicious. It was more than enough for 2 people. For sides, we had zesty slaw and the best Brussels sprouts I've ever had. The only barbecue sauce I tasted was the sweet and spicy and I didn't need to look further than that. Get. Real. Placed a to go order for a kids pulled pork slider (with fries) and a loaded baked potato (with pulled pork added for an extra $3). Almost an hour later I get my food tossed to me on my table. No offers for a bag. Or plastic ware. Checked the kids meal there at the table. No fries. Asked server for them. I Didn't even check the potato because the box was overflowing with some sort of sauce so I just assumed it had pork on top...get home only to find out the potato in fact did not have any meat on it and I was too peeved to go back and deal with it. No parking spots, and a staff who could care less I was even there makes for a disappointing experience. The pulled pork (in the kids meal) tasted like it came out a bag in the frozen food section and the baked potato was SO DROWNED in some sort of sour cream sauce, I couldn't even taste the potato. First off let me say im not big on BBQ. This place was hands down best BBQ ive had in a long time. Everything we had was delicious. We had pork rinds for the appetizer. Crunchy and bursting with flavor. For my main i had the brisket with brussels and potato salad. The brisket was cooked perfectly and i tried almost all the BBQ sauces and they were all great. The brussel sprouts were sweet and smokey. The potato salad was just right. Even the side of pickles and pickled onions was good! Only regret was no room for desert cause the portions are large. We were excited to try the new BBQ joint in town! Thankfully I had read some of the Yelp reviews and had some idea of what to do once inside...or I thought I did lol. We nabbed the very last parking place on the lot @ 5 on a Sunday afternoon. I just don't like the idea of Valet parking, never have... But they do offer valet, and be glad they do, because it's slim pickins as far as spaces in the parking lot! Upon getting out of the car, I noticed the large grassy picnic/play area outside. Fenced in, which is gr koieat for the littles! But too hot for us on that 95 + degree day. So we went inside, where there was no wait, and a server explained the ordering process. You order meat at the counter and then sit down and a server will take your drink and sides order. Well, it didn't happen that way. The employee at the counter told my BF he could order everything there. So he did. More people had started coming in at this point, so there was a hold up for everyone, us standing there waiting for our food, and patrons trying to order...kinda like McDonalds. Ugh. Confusing and not fun. So I walk over to a counter which has 4 different sauces in fairly large containers with some weird apparatus for actually dispensing the sauce into a little plastic cup (located at same counter, lids too). Ok, yes, I am blonde, but it said "Push" on the knob-thingie, and it was more like push, pull, down, up...and 2 of the sauces actually squirted about 4 feet across the floor! Lol. I grabbed a paper towel (every table has a roll of them) and cleaned the sauce off the floor, but then...no trash can anywhere nearby that I could see...so the dirty paper towels ended up on the far end of our table. Anyway! I did notice right off that there was only 1 drink station. For a place this big, one really isn't enough. I spent a fair amount of time waiting in line for my ice & drink. When I went for a refill, a server with a tray was filling 8 cups with ice & water. It took a long time. If it was my restaurant, I'd have a separate beverage station for the servers, or at least 2 drink stations. But that's just me. Also, I could not find the cup lids. I had to ask a server, who handed me one from a white crock near the crock with the straws. Problem is, I couldn't see the lids as they were way down in the crock. Just not a great way to display the lids. And the straws...yes, I want to do my part in conservation, etc., not use plastic straws... but the paper straws were weak and wilted quickly. The little cut out in the cup lid also pretty much crumpled the straw in half, necessitating a replacement straw. So now the food!! We chose the brisket and the ribs, with potato casserole and potato salad. As we entered the front door of A BBQ, there was a display board advertising Croquettes, so we ordered those to start. They actually arrived after everything else, but oh well. The Croquettes were short rib and french fries rolled together, battered, and deep fried. I know, heart attack! Fortunately for my heart, I really did not like the Croquettes. The meat was dry and the croquettes were overcooked. The brisket was very tender! It did not have a whole lot of flavor, which was disappointing. I was fond of the Alabama White Sauce as well as the Carolina style, and that helped. The ribs were pretty darn good! A nice peppery crust on the outside and sooooo moist! Nom nom!! The potato salad was not your typical yellowish straight from the food service company large plastic container kind. It was light ( if potatoes can be light), creamy, sliced and not diced. I would guess the saucy part is maybe sour cream and mayo. Plenty of fresh dill on the top. Very good! The potato casserole, I liked, although my BF did not care for it too much. Think Cracker Barrel hash brown casserole, without the cheese. I just really like the fact that A B BQ had something a little different for a side, too. I only wish they offered a vegetable like green beans or carrots. Since most things, but not everything, is pretty much self serve, there is the question of, do you leave a tip, or not?? I also want to mention that this place seems spacious, and the tables are not jammed together to try and optimize the space like in many restaurants. Very nice. The very high ceilings do not help with noise, though. Would like to return one day when it is cooler out and try something different. Maybe eat outside. I'm sure some things can be attributed to the fact that this is a new place, and I hope they work some of the kinks out. I love barbecue, I love local (not soulless corporate chains), and I love living in Atlantic Beach, so when I saw ABBQ under construction I couldn't wait for it to open! Beautiful facility, great location (though parking is NOT simple - use the free valet!), couldn't wait to eat. Went a weekday evening with my fiancée and 15-year old daughter to have a nice meal. We always liked Mojo's in Jax Beach, so we were hoping for a bbq place we could bike to, maybe with even better food... We got the family bbq platter (don't remember what is called on the menu). Service was super. Very attentive waitress, very kind and helpful. The food tasted fine, maybe will go from fine to excellent after they have been open a bit longer. What truly disappointed is that I got the impression that the upper management/owner is maybe more focused on $ rather than creating the best bbq spot in Jacksonville. I say this for a few reasons. Barbecue is fundamentally an experience of "plenty." Southern hospitality. Help yourselves to seconds, there, sugar! Want some pie? It felt like the meat servings were pretty exactly the amount listed and not one milligram more. The portion sizes for sides were conservative without being outright stingy. What bothered me were the tiny little sauce cups filled with some admittedly tasty sauces. You are telling me, the customer, that you don't want to chance wasting any money on me. I hope the management reads this and strongly considers what I propose, because if you can stop appearing stingy I'll be there twice a week with the family and I will run my big mouth to my hundreds of students about how good it was. Before I do this, you need to do a couple simple things: put the sauces in bottles, label them, and put them all out on every table, like every other successful bbq restaurant. Second, you're not going to go broke giving the customer a bigger helping of mac & cheese or collard greens. Those are cheap ingredients and create the warm hospitality aesthetic that people want in a bbq place. Easy to fix problems... will you do them? Okay so I've been here twice now so I felt it was time to review. This place is a nice addition to the beach as they have lacked bbq as an option. I was hoping for some private parking but it seems valet is the only option here especially after seeing that food is ordered from the counter. Pulling up the exterior is pretty impressive. The smell is incredible. In my opinion, there is nothing like the smell of a bbq pit. The building is brand new and the outdoor dining/grassy area is pretty cool too. Definitely a good option for a group or for families on a nice day to sit outside and there are some games. Some of the outdoor area is covered as well. Not sure if it is pet friendly out there but if they allow dogs would be a nice option to bring furry friends. Walking into the restaurant I was expecting a sit down/table service/host experience given the valet parking. However that is not the case. Bbq is ordered at a counter and the process is a bit confusing. We kinda just had to figure it out on our own as the ordering process is somewhat confusing and awkward. I dine out often and I had some serious trouble figuring out the menu. I felt the service at the bbq counter to be very slow and prior to ordering it seemed we were the only ones waiting to be helped and there were 5 workers standing around doing nothing. The biggest downfall is the fact that there is no bbq sampler platter you can order. This is always my go to option especially when trying a place out for the first time. My husband and I go to Bearded Pig at least twice a month (we drive from Southside and are willing to travel for good bbq) and we get the sampler every single time. I hate the idea of having one type of meat when ordering food.Instead, here you have to build your own a la carte and it takes forever to do trying to figure out how many lbs to order and the sides also aren't included. It turns into a pretty expensive lunch or dinner considering no table service, valet parking etc. The other disappointment was that there is no chicken on their menu. It seems that they only offer chicken as a special but they have Turkey on their regular menu? I was so bummed about this. There is nothing like a nice piece of chicken smoked low and slow. I'm not a fan of Turkey so healthy or lean meat options unfortunately are not an option for me unless it's a night they do chicken special. The bar area was nice and the place itself is very nice with a rustic open feel. We enjoyed the music as well (old school country playing hell yes). We ended up ordering food at the counter and sitting at the bar to make drink ordering easier. The beer selection was pretty good and they have a full bar with some nice whiskey selections. Overall I felt the service at the bar far exceeded the service at the bbq counter. We had the ribs, brisket and sausage. I love that the ribs were large and dry rubbed rather than many places that drench in bbq sauce. They have a wide variety of sauces to select from self served. The brisket we tried was lean and very tasty, not dried out.The sides were tasty including the potato salad, beans and slaw but nothing that blew us away. My husband really loved the sausage which I did try and was very good, smoky and spicy. One thing they need to figure out is giving customers a plate or tray to actually eat food on. We were given 1 tray to eat off of and no plates so we basically had to awkwardly eat our food off of one tray. My husband walked around to try and find us some plates but there were none. We took one of the cardboard trays one of our sides was served in, dumped it out and I used that as my plate. We were given the wrong check when we went to pay our bill at the bar but it was quickly fixed and we were issued an apology. Overall the food is good, the bar and outdoor area are cool but they have more kinks than I was expecting to work out with ordering at the counter and the other issues mentioned above. I would come again as I did like the bbq but will hope for some of these issues to be fixed and likely would walk from parking in Town to avoid valet. read more

We tried ABBQ out last Saturday for my husbands birthday because he loves BBQ. We took advantage of the complimentary valet parking and were asked to pick our table in the main dining room. The atmosphere was very loud. We were given water shortly after we were seated and it tasted really bad, like unfiltered tap water. It took a very long time for someone to take our order, but we finally placed it when the Manager came over to our table. The food was good - the brisket was great, the pulled pork was OK. The coleslaw was a nice unique recipe, but the mac and cheese was very basic, nothing special at all. When we went to leave, the valet attendant brought us the wrong car. Good thing we are honest folks and didn't dive off in someone else's Lexus... Next time, we will probably pick up brisket to go. read more

I understand that working out all the kinks in a new restaurant can take some time, but this place will go under very quickly if they do not make some serious changes. This is lengthy, I know, but worth the read if you are curious about the over all experience. A) The ordering process. It is the most frustrating and bizarre experience you will ever have ordering food. It is a BBQ restaurant but you can't get table service if you want to order MEAT??? Instead you have to stand in a line at a meat counter, where they charge an automatic 15% gratuity, and then you have to order sides and everything else from wait staff once you finally sit down at a table. So you pay a bill and a tip for the meat and then have to pay a separate bill and tip for everything you order from wait staff at your table. Not to mention, your meat is cold by the time you finally sit down and get the rest of your food. B) The parking. There is none! You either have to valet (so there's another person you are expected to tip, which brings us up to 3 tips per 1 dining experience) OR you just have to park elsewhere. Close options are: *across the street at the old KMart and walk/run across Atlantic Blvd, which is just plain dangerous at most times of the day *Laura Plaza. BUT keep in mind, Laura Plaza is actually NOT not a public parking lot so I'd fear getting towed if I parked there. *anywhere else you can find along a near by street that is not a tow-away zone. The way I see it is unless you are OK w/ riding a bike or Ubering up there, prepare to use valet or wear your walkin' shoes! C) The prices. This one kind of ties back in to point A, as I'd expect full table service for what you pay here. It is definitely a good bit higher than any other near-by BBQ place. Main reason is that no sides (not even 1) are included w/ anything. So unless you plan on eating meat or a sandwich only, you have pay an additional $3.50 for EACH side you want. And the meat is over priced as well. Here are a couple of examples of the meat prices in comparison to Bono's, just so you can get an idea: ABBQ Brisket is $23.00/lb; Bono's is $18.49/lb. ABBQ Pulled Pork is $18.00/lb; Bono's is $12.99/lb. Again, pretty significant considering BBQ is BBQ is BBQ no matter what argument anyone tries to make. It's smoked meats and simple sides, that's about it it! D) There is no kids menu. This does not affect me personally, just something I noticed. They do have a great outdoor area that is very nice and kid-friendly, however, there is no kids menu at all! You'd think in an area so heavily populated w/ families, and after spending so much $ to make the kids area, they would at least offer a small portion of meat or a small sandwich w/ a side of fries for the kids at a low price...just my opinion but I'm sure most would agree. With all that being said, I'm not sure these guys were thinking clearly when they a) chose the location and b) decided on that terrible ordering process. If they do not convert to full table service, which again I would expect for what they charge, I can honestly say I will never be back. Just way too expensive and inconvenient to get to. read more

Nice atmosphere! The bartender today was such lovely girl. Her recommendation were spot on. The brisket and ribs were tender and the selection of sauces were an added bonus. Jalapeño poppers were deliciously wrapped in bacon. They have a decent selection of cocktails. I wish they had more tequila options. My absolute fav was the sweet bake bean.
