I wasn't sure if it was an electrical issue in the house or a problem with the oven, but I started with the appliance. I made an appointment with Appliance Express--they couldn't tell me until the day before what time they'd come out, so I had to allocate the entire day to stay home. The day before they texted me with a time range, so narrowed it a bit. On the day of the appointment the repair guy called me when he was on his way, which was helpful. The repair guy was very nice but didn't strike me as being terribly knowledgeable about our particular oven. However, he suggested that it needed a software update (which required first connecting the oven to our WiFi). He gave me a phone number to Whirlpool support who could assist in connecting the oven to our WiFi and downloading the update. He barely touched the oven, other than to look at the current software version on the display. But for that helpful little piece of advice about needing a software update I was charged $162.36 by Appliance Express. They could have just told me over the phone, before someone ever came out, to try that solution first. I got the oven connected to our WiFi (I'm a retired IT guy and am very intentionally judicious about what I connect to our home network as I'm very aware of the security and performance/bandwidth implications of connecting devices willy-nilly). Once connected, I had trouble getting the update to install. The repair guy watched for a little while and then left. I called the Whirlpool number and they were very helpful in getting it sorted out (it turned out there was something they had to initiate on their end). After the software update I have had no problems with the appliance (other than I think it's stupid that an oven requires Internet connectivity and software updates to function). So, in the end Appliance Express identified the likely problem so that I was able to take care of it myself, but they charged me $162.36 for that little nugget of information. They could have just suggested over the phone that I try that first before they came out.

When I called to make an appointment I was told that the service charge is $89, and when the…read moretechnician looks at the problem, he will give me a quote and I can decide if I want to just pay for the service call, or have them proceed to make the repair and their would be no service call fee. I had googled the repair before looking for a repair company. The repair should be approximately $150-160 for labor and the part $60. When the tech looked at my oven, and discovered that the repair was what I expected, , , His quote was $328 plus tax. I challenged that price, but he said that was the price it would be. I didn't care to pay $89 and then get another company to come out, so I approved the $328 quote. The repair took 22 minutes. The tech was at my home exactly 30 minutes door to door. Next time I will ask what the hourly repair cost is, and if not provided, I will call a company that will quote a labor charge. The tech was nice, qualified, and did a good job. I am only posting because that was WAY TOO MUCH for 20 minutes labor and a $60 part.

When I saw that it was being done in violation of code (and looked terrible), I asked him just to stop. Rather than have a big scene in my house, I paid the entire service charge. Later, I called the office to negotiate at least a partial refund, and the person I needed to speak to was "not available" four times over a week's period, and never called back as promised. I kept calling to at the very least let them know things didn't go well. I finally spoke to a supervisor, and after explaining the whole ordeal, he said he'd have to compare my account to the technician's story. When I called back (again, no response as promised), the supervisor refuted my version of what happened and blew me off. I was out $300, and still didn't have my vent installed.
