the 'double A" is really a small dark bar that serves a very limited menu of food. If you like charbroiled steaks this IS the place in Eureka! Ribeye, porterhouse, fillet. Or, fried chicken, or breaded fish sticks. And they've recently added baked potato to the choices of starch. The french fries and onion rings are good, too. Soups are always fresh and good. Salads still could use a little upgrade with better lettuce than just iceberg, but the drinks are very reasonable and the staff is great! Smoking section outside is covered and enclosed & set up with tables and chairs to eat out there too - if you don't mind the cigarette smell/smoke. Omg terrible. Prices are sky high for very so so diner food. It's primarily a bar, so food will taste good and service will seem good if you drink, but if you go here for food for a family dinner you will pay a lot and get little in return. Over one hour wait to order food. Drink order messed up once, salad order messed up twice and server never brought what was ordered. $81 for two orders and two sides. Super super sick the next day. Every time we are in Eureka we love to stop here and have their delicious steaks! You would not expect this little hole-in-the-wall bar to serve such an amazing food but they truly do. The fish is the best fish that I've have had and I am super picky about fish because 9 times out of 10 anywhere that I order fish it is completely soggy and greasy but this is not at all. Very nice experience. Lived in Eureka all my life, but have never tried the AA. After doing some research (well, reading Yelp and talking to friends), the wife and I decided to give it a go. First off, we love dive bars. We knew that was exactly what we were getting into. The décor, was as expected...and we loved that. The atmosphere lacked pretension and it obviously wasn't a "pick up" scene. As middle aged married people, that was just fine. The only server was also tending bar. From reviews, people said that the service was slow and/or poor. While the server wasn't super talkative, she was attentive and seemed to be holding her own, even in the ramping up busy environment. She was quick with the drinks, and the food came out quick as well. I had the rib eye - medium, and the wife had the sirloin - medium as well. Both had the PERFECT amount of char on the outside, and the inside was pink and juicy. In short, the steaks were fabulous. The salad was decent, though the ranch tasted a bit funky (not a big deal). The french fries and onion rings were pretty decent as well. The horseradish? Potent and tasty. I had two micro brews with dinner, and the wife had one. At the end, drinks and meal, it was only $55! Very affordable considering the alternatives here in E town. Great experience and will definitely be back! read more

I'm re-reviewing this place and adding a star. We ate and drank here last night with friends. I had the ribeye- it was blackened on the outside and medium rare on the inside and that's perfectly cooked for me. My partner had the fillet which he said was not the best choice but it was decent. The steaks are not prime so they aren't very tender. However, for $18 bucks, a big steak, salad, and potato is hard to beat. For four of us, food and way too many drinks each, the bill was around $130. That's a great bargain if you don't expect a super tender steak or upscale dining. It's a local, fun bar with solidly decent food, and nice staff and clientele. For what it is, it's great. read more

BEST. FILET MIGNON. EVER. Melt-in-your-mouth steaks! I come for the filet, not the environment. The outside patio is great for nice weather days. Service has always been on-point in my experiences. The side dishes are so-so, but again, I come for the filet. This place may look a little sketchy from the outside, especially with it being right near the county jail, but don't just drive by! Apparently the best steak in Eureka is in a shady bar; the type with fish on the walls. But the steak is not bad. The charred outside on the steak is tasty, but it does cover some of the meat flavor. A1 may be necessary... Overall nice, but maybe not worth the $22+ price for a steak. The onion rings on the other hand are quite tasty. A nice thin beer batter makes them so very good. Not much onion flavor, but that's ok. You may get onion rings for the onion flavor, but who are you kidding, you are here for the batter. Quick note, the wings are salty, a bit too salty. Have enjoyed this place for years! My first time was 8 years ago as a tourist, now as a resident. From the front it doesnt look like much, you park in back, enter thru the rear. Its not the most beautiful place...but I'm going there for the food not decor! Its an actual full bar & grill. You can actually eat at the bar or a table. I like the bar! TVs are a plenty filled with sports which I dont watch. Its a super casual, local slummy place with great grub! I have had their wings which are meaty and yummy. Be prepared to get messy, not only are they deelish but they're sloppy! I have never gone wrong with the rib eye. I get it rare and its super flavorful charbroiled on the outside and tender on the inside. It comes with a small house salad, nothing spectacular or a cup of yummy homemade soup. You get a choice of baked or ff potatoes or rings and now sweet potato fries...i always get the rings, freshly made, super tasty... Drinks arent too shabby either :-) Overall, its the pefect place to go when you want to hang out with friends and eat great grub in a super casual environment! read more

This is the only place in Eureka that I know of where you can get a truly good steak. The meat is grain fed and perfectly grilled; if you ask for medium rare, you get medium rare. I've found it frustrating at other places when they just can't seem to cook the meat correctly. You can choose from a porterhouse, ribeye, or top sirloin, all of varying ounces. (You can get a 50 ounce+ steak on advance order if you want a truly beautiful artery clogging experience). They serve good, strong horseradish with every steak. The steaks also come with fries and/or onion rings, and they have soup available which is usually homemade. Its definitely low key and grainy, but keep in mind looks can be deceiving; I love going there and its one of Eureka's 'best kept secrets'. Those in the know will always recommend this place. Its 21 and over so definitely don't bring kids. Call ahead on weekends because it gets packed, and don't try to place a carry out order during peak business hours. All in all, great dirty martinis, mellow atmosphere, shuffle board, an area in back to smoke or chill if you so choose, and most importantly no-nonsense, good steak. Word of mouth and local enthusiasm for this joint keeps the place busy, to the point where they really don't need to advertise very much. We love dive bars and when they have good food and good cocktails we are in heaven! Gumbo was great hot and zesty. All food came hot and presented well. Steaks were decent HOWEVER...this is a loud, sports bar. Not a steakhouse. Steaks were over cooked The filet was very good but not seasoned. The porterhouse was not as billed. It was a T-bone. And not nearly the weight posted on the menu. The waitress was also the bartender and busboy. Lots of hard-working blue-collar guys come in and sit at the huge horseshoe bar to eat n drink after work. Nothing wrong with this but it's important to be honest about how this place is advertised. Amazing grilled steak. Ordered a ribeye, medium rare and medium rare is how it came. Juicy and rich. I had the sweet potato fries for my side - no complaints there. What took everything to the next level was their horseradish sauce. I made the mistake of slathering it over my first bite like I would a horseradish sauce from any other place. Nope. We were a bit surprised to hear that a totally "local bar" in the traditional windowless storefront had quite nice steaks, but most interesting places closed so early that we ended up here. The best steak you can get in Humboldt or probably anywhere on the north coast.
