I came by to get an afternoon snack after running some errands around town. A Pie Stop is located in a strip mall at the corner of Minnesota and Benson behind the City Diner and across from Carrs Aurora Village. The place was hard for me to notice since it is right by the side of Benson and I drive by here repeatedly as I tend to focus on heavy traffic approaching rather than look off to the right side driving east-bound after grocery shopping at Carrs. After hearing the good reviews on this place, I decided to satisfy my sweet tooth and check this place out. The place has a cozy seating area for anyone wanting to stop in for a quick bite as well as several displays full of pies and desserts right by the cash register. I saw one of my favorite pies: the Key Lime and it was fantastic. The pie itself was very silky and rich with the right amount of sweetness to go with the lime. It also had a creative display with a dollop of whipped cream and a slice of candied lime on top. The crust was flaky and tender and I literally finished this in just a few minutes. I ordered a slice of Dutch Apple Pie for later and this was also superb with a good amount of sliced apples, crumbles on top, and a rich filling with the distinct taste of butter and cinnamon. Other delicious pies to choose from include Sweet Potato Pie (a popular flavor with a lot of people during the NC State Fair a couple of years ago), Rhubarb Pie, Whoopie Pie, Derby Pie (my cousin's wife made an awesome Southern-style version of this dish back in Raleigh, North Carolina), Bavarian Pear, Bluebarb (a combination of blueberry and rhubarb), Mincemeat Pie, Shoofly Pie, Sundae Pie, and the Turtle Pie. In addition to the pies, they also sell custards with flavors like Buttermilk, Egg, Coconut, Chess, and Lemon as well as daily special pot pies. Mon. is Chicken Pot Pie, Tues.-Bacon, Mac, and Cheese, Wed.-Pot Roast, Thurs.-Mexican, and Fri.-Seafood Pot Pie. Another hidden gem I wish I had gone to sooner. The lady behind the counter bakes these pies fresh all day and if there is a flavor you don't see on their menu, you can always call ahead to place a custom order and she will be happy to make it for you. This place is definitely an option for a sweet snack if I don't feel like having ice cream or frozen yogurt. Speaking of ice cream, it can be added as an ala mode option for $2.00 more. Village Inn and Kriner's has another strong competitor to face when it comes to delicious, homemade pies. Had I looked at the childish and unprofessional review responses prior to ordering I would have taken my business elsewhere. First the owner left as we were arriving BEFORE CLOSING despite having called ahead and told him we would be there to pick up before close. This wouldn't have been so awful, except for the fact that he screamed at my poor mother when she went back the following day to pick it up and politely mentioned she had made it before closing. I am absolutely horrified by his actions and saddened that the Anchorage community, myself included, came together to support such an undeserving business during this time when money is tight for everyone. I will never return and encourage folks to go elsewhere. This is simply not how you run a business and the owner is undeserving of any and all support his business receives. How dare you. read more

It was a day or so before thanksgiving and my family wanted to buy some pies! I arrived earlier than my mother so I went inside, looked at the menu and the show case then sat down at their tables. I was there for 7 minutes, and was approached by a worker and was asked if I'm going to buy anything quite rudely. "Yes I'm here waiting for my mom, we are going to buy some PIES together for thanksgiving." He then told me to get out and that I'm not aloud to loiter, despite me explaining I will buy multiple pies very soon. My mother showed up 3 minutes later and we went and shopped somewhere else. The case didn't have more than 3 pies anyways. Needless to say I will not be returning to this store. read more

This is a great place especially if you are like me and cannot bake pies. Several times when I was a guest in someone's home I brought a pie from here. You can buy a whole pie or just a slice. I always go when I am getting a whole pie but it's nice to know I could get a piece just for me if I wanted. The apple is my favorite but then I am not very adventurous. I brought a lemon meringue pie to someone's house and it was beautiful. I was too full when they served dessert so didn't have any but everyone said it was good. The Saturday before Easter I went in for an apple pie to take to my sister's house. They said they didn't make any that day. I was surprised but everyone liked the triple berry. I would like to try a Whoopi Pie since I never have but that will have to wait as I am trying to eat a little healthier. As good as the dessert pies are they also make pot pies and pasties. I have not tried the pot pies but the pasties (meat pies without the gravy) are so good. They are as good as my mother used to make. Both the ladies who own the place are great. Give them a try. Remember they close at 4 on Saturday so go early. read more

The pies here are delicious and the bakers are super nice. Tip: you can get almost any pie sugar free (I feel like there was one exception; perhaps Key Lime?). I called a bunch of places around town trying to find a sugar-free option for a cousin's birthday and no dice. I called A PIe Stop right after they opened and I requested (read: begged) to have it before the end of the day (usually they say 24 hours) and they had it ready for me by 6pm! The sugar-free pie was a hit. Since then, I have tried other (non-sugar-free) options including pecan, blueberry, and banana cream and they have all been great. read more

I decided to stop by this place with a couple of friends after finding out about it through the local news. This pie shop currently resides in what used to be Superstar Pastry Design. The interior was nicely decorated and there was a simple arrangement of several tables and chairs. The menu itself is simple as well, as you have the option to purchase an entire pie, a slice, or a savory pot pie. According to their website, they also have a DIY cupcake bar, although I didn't happen to see any indication of that while visiting. I did happen to catch a glimpse of a few whoopie pies and an espresso machine though. I opted to try a slice of pecan pie, while my friends chose chocolate cream and coconut custard pies. Mine was pretty fantastic, with a sweet and gooey base underneath and a crisp and nutty top layer. The crust was pleasantly flaky and buttery and the homemade qualities of the pie really stood out to me. One friend didn't care much for his coconut custard, although the other friend seemed to really enjoy the chocolate cream, as he probably finished it off in the span of a minute or two. The staff was very friendly as well. It is apparent that this is a family-run business and they take pride in their product. At $5 a slice, I was a bit wary at first, but I ended up completely satisfied and not too sugared-out. Lastly, their website indicates that they are willing to accommodate for parties and other special events--something I'll have to make note of for the future. It's nice to have a place in town that specializes in what I feel like is an underappreciated dessert. I'd be more than happy to revisit A Pie Stop as long as I can maintain my girlish figure and I'll probably update this review once I sample one of their pot pies. read more

I've been hearing about this place on the radio a lot and was excited to try it. Had their lemon meringue on "pi" day that someone had brought into work. Loved how firm it was and oh so tasty. We then dropped by to pick up a pie for dessert this weekend. We got the peanut butter pie, which is their signature pie. Oh boy! So pretty I "almost" didn't want to eat it. Unlike many of the peanut butter pies I've had, this one is quite delicate and dainty. Peanut butter filling is light and topped off in mounds of wonderful whipped cream goodness. Crust is tasty as well and keeps firm. Can't wait to go back and try more. And service is great! Wonderful ladies that work the shop!! read more

My dad and I tried the Triple Berry pie. We both concluded that more berries, less cornstarch and a flakier crust would have made it better. I'll go back and try another flavor but as of our first visit, I feel I can make a better pie. $5 a slice is getting a little steep for just a jello like pie when you're expecting fruit. Other than that it's a cute little shop decently decorated and smells heavenly. They do espresso but could use some cold beverage cups in addition to hot beverage cups. We got cherry pie which was nice and warm and would've been perfect with a scoop of ice cream ( next time ) My only issue was the apple pie, they gave it to us cold. I stopped in July 3rd and got a large pie to take to a friend in Seward. I saw some mini pies in the display case and asked to purchase one of them. The kid working came over and I pointed to the one I wanted, he then told me I couldn't have that one, I had to purchase the older one? He said the law made them sell the older ones first, "first in first out" was what he called it. I explained to him there is no such law, and he could sell anything he wanted to anyone. He again refused to give me what I wanted, so I declined to buy the old pie. I then spoke to the owner. He explained to me that he does things his way, that he's referred to (proudly) as the pie Nazi ? Ok? He also informed me that they dont make a profit as if this somehow was relevant to his business strategy? I nicely suggested to him that he might turn a profit if he puts his customers first, rather than the pride he's invested in being the Anchorage pie nazi ? He then proceeded to tell me to go F___ off ? Iv never in my life went into an established, seen something I wanted in the display case, asked for it, only to be told: " you cant have that fresh one, but iv got something older and dryer you might wanna try" If ur ok with this then please visit the pie stop. If u feel that being proud to call your self a Nazi under any circumstances relating to how you interact with the public is just normal business practices, again please stop in and see them. Have you ever been yelled at for trying to pre-order food? I hadn't, until today. I called ahead, excited to pre-order a pot pie as instructed by the owner previously when they'd sold out a few times. Instead, the owner verbally berated and insulted me, saying he's never sold out at 11:30 and said I was lying, (which is simply not true and a strange accusation) as I've experienced this at least twice. I went in to discuss this with him and calmly told him i was a big fan of their food but I was disappointed in how he spoke to me. Amazingly, again he shouted at me, was so angry and accused me of lying. He called over an employee and asked him to corroborate his story. The employee agreed with me that they had indeed sold out before. It was very strange to have a business owner react this way, when I was simply trying to order food from his business and didn't want to miss out! This place has great pies and I've been a big fan, but I will not be back due to the way I was treated here. read more

All I can say is thank goodness there isn't a Pie Stop in Portland, OR, or I'd be big as a house. I just stopped in for a small cherry pie (still warm from the oven) and also grabbed one of the daily special shepherd's pies for dinner. The shepherd's pie was great, but the cherry pie transported me to places I haven't been in a long time. delicious filling, and a perfectly crispy (how do they DO that?) crust. The pie stop is fantastic. They sell both large and small pies. I'd say "personal" but it usually takes my husband two or three days to devour one. Our favorite is the Bluebarb pie (blueberry and rhubarb) followed by the peach and key lime. If they don't have something out on display, just ask. Sometimes they've had what I was looking for in the back. They're always nice. Someone even saw my military ID as I was going to pay and offered a military discount. read more

This place is like walking into your grandma's house. The smell is amazing and I was immediately sold. Once at the counter I ordered a pecan pie which was sitting in the display case. The register was having some issues starting up so while we waited I chatted with the two very kind women at the front. One of them asked me if I had ever had a whoopie pie, I knew my mom loved them but I never had one before. She gave me one on the house to try! Oh man, it was amazing. Initially I thought I wouldnt like it too much but when I took a bite it was like eating a cloud make out of chocolate and vanilla. I had to fight off my boyfriend for the last bite. Anyways, while we were talking one of the women mentioned that dutch apple pies had just came out of the oven (I learned dutch apple is the one with the crumbles on top) so i just couldnt resist. They were gracious in allowing me to switch to the super piping hot apple pie. Being from NY I am used to a larger price tag for quality, so the $22.00 didn't deter me much. When he got home from work my boyfriend tried the pie before I did. Initially he had told me he didnt really like apple pie and he didnt look too excited. Well, after eating a few bites he looked at me and said "This is probably the best pie I have ever had". I felt the same! There were tons of apples inside not that jelly stuff, and it was spiced perfectly. You could tell it was homemade and those women really put their hearts into it. Its dangerous it is so close to my house because I am tempted to go back once a week! My boyfriend has even started asking whats the next flavor we are going to try, =) We love you Pie Stop ! read more

I came here on a weekday afternoon around 2 pm. They had run out of the pocket pies so I had the pot pie they had for the day, beef Mac and cheese. It wasn't that good, it was pretty dry and Luke warm. Would've been better just as regular beef Mac and cheese. It was too much carbs with no sauce or cheese. And it was $7, not worth it bc it wasn't that good. I also had their Dutch Apple pie a la mode, with their home made vanilla ice cream. This was MUCH BETTER!! I would probably only come here again for their dessert pies, but they are a bit pricey: $5 for a slice, $22 for a whole. Their homemade ice cream was not creamy, more the texture of a sorbet. They also have some small candy bags for sale that come from out of state. I probably won't be back unless I have a crazy pie craving. I'll look for some other pie fixes in the meantime. read more

Stopped in to order a sweet potato pie, and was instantly shocked by the rudeness of the older man working the counter. I asked if I could put in an order to be cut off mid sentence by him saying he needs a days advance and the cash up front. Which is understandable but the attitude in which he said so was rude as can be. Then I asked if I could buy two slices of two different pies "like the menu says" only to be told that he won't sell me a slice I have to buy BOTH pies whole. Completely unreasonable. DO NOT SUPPORT them. I'm all for supporting local businesses, but this man deserves none of your hard earned money read more

This local gem is my favorite when in town. They sell delicious mini sweet and savory pies. Perfect for one. Chicken pot pie Mondays are my fave. Beef pasties are delicious too. I tried a gluten free bundt cake my last visit... I could not believe it was GF. So moist and delicious. Amazing! Tips: they have a drive thru on the side of the building.
