I was looking for a handyman in the Evanston area to improve a few things in my condo that I had been putting off for a few years. So I found AGH on Yelp and put in the request on their website. I received a quick response and George came out to take a look at everything we wanted to do and provided an estimate later in the week. Once I had a chance to review all my estimates I contacted AGH and gave them the green light. They were able to start work on my projects within a week. Here are the projects I had them work on: -Custom built cabinet/pantry in my kitchen -Custom backsplash above my kitchen counter/sink -Remove/install new cabinet by my stove -Recaulk bathroom window in my shower From start to finish it took them about a week. Pretty reasonable given the amount of work I had done. They also stayed within the original budget that was quoted. They were also very clean and the workers that were in and out of my condo were very polite. I will definitely call them again for my next projects. Really disappointed with the work. I am not terribly experienced with home improvements so when I asked if marble, hexagon tile for my backsplash would change the scope much I was hoping for an honest and informed answer. The one I received was that it shouldn't change it much but in fact it did (excluding the materials). I know better now. But I don't think the guy working in the project knew what he was in for nor took the effort to meet my high standards (even though I was paying hourly and it's not a difficult job, per se, it just requires attention to detail - which I agree increases the cost). I wanted to be happy and asked for many fixes to rectify sloppy work, all of which cost me though I was offered a small discount overall due to the issues. Ultimately I am left with a very uneven backsplash, it's not flat, among other mistakes due to inexperience or sloppiness. I couldn't even get all the outlet plate covers on at one point and had to ask for it to be corrected (among numerous other complaints). I am disappointed every time I look at it and I paid a LOT for it. Really sad. I paid enough that I should be really happy with the work; I could have hired a specialty tile company for this price - and I should have. We also had drywall work done which was quite uneven in several spots (especially the corner). Oh, and my cat got let out at one point and I ran the neighborhood crying for hours looking for him while pregnant. I get accidents happen but it's still notable. read more

I've been suffering through the heat in my apartment lately, and needed to have a (gigantic) 15,000 BTU window AC unit installed. A Glenview-located, electronics giant (I won't name names) wanted to charge me almost $300 for a quick-mount installation. Not happening. Then, A Good Handyman saved the day. Candace in the office responded to my pleading voicemail within a few hours, and got an appointment booked for me for just a few days later. The cost? Less than HALF of what the other place wanted to charge me. Clay and his partner were prompt and on time (even with the added challenge of parking on a Cubs gameday), and brought all the tools necessary to install this behemoth into my dining room. Zero stars. I hired AGH to do 5 jobs at my house. They performed only 1 to satisfaction. I'll mention a couple. They stained my deck orange and ran out of stain & considered it done, they broke a knob off my washing machine and didn't tell me (I discovered it later), the worst was the floor a walk-in closet, which was very uneven. They installed a rigid floor instead of linoleum, which is what we discussed. I came home and there were huge gaps between the planks. Next, they put down linoleum squares, which popped up because the glue wouldn't hold. The owner, George, asked ME to buy Power Grab glue and remove the glue from the squares that weren't sticking and apply the Power Grab and put heavy books on the flooring for several days to see if it would hold. Essentially, I am doing his job. Finally, when that didn't work, he said he didn't want to put any more money into it and would only pay for a cheap 6 x 9 rug to throw over the faulty floor. All was well up to this point then: * No contact after 2 weeks * I followed-up, was told I'd have an estimate by week's end * One week later, no estimate, no response. * Follow-up again, no estimate received. Promised it again. * One week later, checked back, no response. Candace the central coordinator is very nice but the handyman reps (independents?) are much less responsive, as in, not at all. I'm certain she has witnessed these kinds of delays before. * News flash/update: its been over a month, still no response after repeated inquiries. I realize it wasn't the largest job, but this isn't a good way to get repeat business. Previously I had multiple pieces of tricky artwork hung and a heavy wrought-iron and marble piece attached securely to the wall. My heroes! After contacting several handyman companies, these guys were the first people who seemed to know exactly what work I needed to do. The problem: We have a broken interior door in our condo that needs to be replaced ASAP. We've tried looking for the door at Home Depot, but haven't been able to find it. The solution: Have a handyman come look at the door, go and find the door, and install. Seems easy enough, right? One company I spoke with suggested I find the door first, and then call them back. Clearly not what I wanted. The awesome gentleman who called me from A Good Handyman asked me a few quick questions, and immediately knew what kind of door it was, and had me scheduled with someone in 2 days. Clay arrived on time, took measurements of the door, and went off to scour all the stores. He was relentless in his search. And after trying 3 stores, finally found it at the Crafty Beaver - and kept me updated via phone the entire time. He even scheduled to come back on Sunday and finish the job, as he needed to wait for the door and didn't want me just waiting for 3 hours in an empty condo. Today, he called to let me know he was on his way, and now we have a wonderful bathroom door with no holes in it. Labor is $80/hour. I was initially quoted 2-3 hours, but the difficulty of finding this door led to 4.5 hours of labor time. Cash, checks, and CCs accepted (there is a 2.5% additional fee for CCs though). I will definitely be reaching out to A Good Handyman when I need work done at the house. read more

I just worked with A Good Handyman to install a sink in my bathroom and it was a great experience. I got slightly nervous the morning of the install as there was a last minute cancellation BUT Derhyl quickly stepped in and things got started only an hour behind schedule. Derhyl did an excellent job and was very professional and efficient. While here he asked me about the lighting I was going to have installed and pointed out that the current wiring (hanging out of the wall) would need to be re-done before anything could be put in. He asked if I wanted him to do it while he was there since the install would be faster than previously thought. He ended up doing this as well for about the price Lowe's was going to charge just for the sink. Everything looks great, I'll definitely be calling AGH again in the future! read more

I have never experienced a worker as unprofessional or creepy as the one sent by this company. Last night I found he had gone without permission through my bedroom - which has nothing to do with the room being renovated - moved things around, broke the air conditioner, left plaster-caked footprints all over the room, including on my pillow. It will cost hundreds just to replace what he ruined. On top of which, he is more than a month behind on the project he is supposed to have completed, leaves the living room and guest bathroom in awful condition on a daily basis, and has used our dishes to mix plaster without permission. He should be fired, and this company boycotted. Do not use. Moreover, the business owner falsely claimed my review was fake or about a different company, when of course that is not the case, and demanded it be taken down rather than fixing or addressing any of the mistakes made by their employees. Since the initial review, further work produced additional problems. More dishes needed to be thrown away because of contractors mixing plaster in them without permission. A computer had to be recycled because so much tile dust got in it that the motherboard was ruined and it would no longer turn on (said computer was in the living room, not the room being repaired, but the workers kept cutting tile in the living room for no reason). Also there is so much tile dust in the wood living room floor that the floor is ruined. And through it all, a job that was supposed to be completed by mid-June remains unfinished, on top of thousands of dollars in damage. I've had bad experiences trying to get reliable help (handymen, moving, etc.), so was nervous about trying this new company. However, they returned my message promptly, arrived ON TIME (I cannot express enough how rare this is), and gave great service. The job I needed help with was installing a simple window AC. When I called to make an appointment, I was told that this task would only take an hour, which I appreciated. (I had called other handyman services and found that very few companies were willing to give me such an assurance--one even told me it would take TWO hours to install this window AC, which is ridiculous.) My handyman Jesse arrived on time and got to work right away. He even added some take to my window so that friends wouldn't absentmindedly try to open the window and pull out the AC. The one issue (which actually turned out to be very positive) was that Jesse had to run out to the car to pick up some additional materials. He was taking a little longer than I expected, so I called to ask him when would return. He could tell I was worried about exceeding the hour, so he assured me that no matter how long it took, he would only charge for the hour. I was really impressed by this. As a final note, this is one of the few companies that doesn't have a transportation or consultation fee. Most other companies charge around $80/hour + $30 in some other fee. I was thrilled to avoid this set fee and have the assurance of only 1 hour of work. Overall, wonderful and quick service (it did only take 1 hour exactly). I wanted to like this company. They're local and had good reviews here and on Angie's List. The only bad reviews I saw were from people who hadn't actually hired this company, but were insulted that they company didn't respond quickly enough to their initial call. I don't want to embarrass anyone, so I'm not going to include names of the employees who came to my home. I hired A Good Handyman for a bathroom remodel with no plumbing changes. They were supposed to remove and replace the wall and floor tile in the bathroom and shower, hang a new shower door, remove the existing medicine cabinet with integrated lighting and replace it with a new cabinet and junction box for separate lighting fixture, and add an electrical outlet. They were supposed to start mid-June and finish in 2 weeks. It has now been 3 months. They are not done yet. Everything done has had to be corrected, and a mess has been left in my home and in the common area in my condo building for months. Aside from all the problems with their work, the overwhelming issue was the lack of respect for both my home and myself. They started in mid-June, and I demo'ed a good bit of the existing wall tile before they started to give them a head start. After pulling down the rest of the wall and floor tile, he set my sink and toilet in the dining room to be reinstalled later. I later saw that he had set the wall-hung sink down on its side, bending the vintage sink leg at the bolt, which caused the bolt to snap and the leg to fall off. He also parked a large equipment cart in my living room. As they worked, they left machines on the floor in my living room, including a tile saw with an exposed round saw blade. I covered it as best I could so my two cats wouldn't try to paw at it. No one ever wiped up any mess they created, and never brought a shop-vac to clean up the immense amount of dust and debris. Despite my requests to bring in drop cloths to cover the floor every time a worker came, the floor and carpet were covered in dust and plaster/grout globs. These tracks went out my front door and into the elevator, so I had to vacuum the hallway outside of my apartment. I finally brought in plastic drop cloths and put them down myself, but they were often kicked aside. People mixed plaster in my kitchen sink, leaving dust and plaster all over the kitchen counters. Someone even took my travel coffee mug and mixed plaster or grout in it, leaving it encrusted. Plaster has been ground into my floors and carpet and smeared on the wall outside the bathroom. I asked that they make sure to close the door to my bedroom (the bathroom is through a small entryway/ closet area in my bedroom) so my cats wouldn't get into the mess in the bathroom, but both the bathroom and bedroom doors were always left open. They placed the tile cutting machine on my wood floor and cut tile in the middle of the living room, leaving everything covered in dust, and leaving some small tile pieces and water puddles on the floor. My kitchen is open to the living room, so everything in kitchen, even the plates in the cabinets were covered in dust. Even my cats were covered in dust and throwing up daily. No matter how much I vacuumed, mopped, and swept, I couldn't keep up with the dust and debris all over my home. I don't know why they didn't clear out the small hallway between the bathroom door and bedroom door and cut tile in there, where the dust could be contained, and I wasn't home to see that they were simply folding over the area run in the living room to put the machine down there until the last day they were cutting tile. Every single thing that has been done has had to be repaired. When I point out the poor workmanship, I'm told that everything if fine, and I don't know what I'm talking about before the repairs are even considered. Some of the problems have been: The tile floor was installed on an angle and had to be reinstalled. The quality of the wall tile installation is uneven. I had to make repeated requests to replace tiles that had been installed even though they were chipped, and to replace a tile that broke when the floor was torn back up. The original "fixes" were to cover up the chips and cracks with grout. The threshold into the room had to be replaced, and then the replaced again, and replacement is still crooked. The light fixture was installed incorrectly; the handyman lied about how he installed it, and has now been reinstalled poorly. The shower door was installed incorrectly, over my objections and the written directions. After plastering over the trap for my bathtub drain, the handyman said, "most people just tile over" drum traps. He didn't know what a drum trap was, and when I tried to explain it, he waved me away like I couldn't possibly know what I was talking about. It's still plastered into place. People come to my home generally not knowing what they're supposed to work on, and argue with me about obvious mistakes. I'm uploading pictures. read more

They came out and realigned the door, replaced the door knob and deadbolt and tried to file down the frame to help the door close a little better. They were quick, friendly and courteous of our time and money. They were very helpful with making a determination on how to rekey our back door, as well. The short- very responsive, punctual, courteous, professional, reasonably priced, came in under estimate & was able to handle a wide range of tasks around our house from plumbing to drywall. Will definitely be using them again. The long- We needed to have a number of items taken care of after the purchase of our new condo, and after several days of research I decided to reach out to A Good Handyman and one other handyman service for quotes. I heard back from Candace at A Good Handyman in less than 24 hours, and I never ended up getting a reply from the other service so I went with AGH. They bill $80 an hour, and they were able to take care of the light plumbing, electrical & other misc. items from our inspection that we needed to have done. Carlos was our handyman, and he showed up on time, and was very professional and courteous. He took time to walk through my list of issues with me, and then he set off on his way to make repairs. The main reason we needed to have them out was to fix a leaking shower head. It turned out to be a defective part & Carlos gave me the option to go look for the part on my own and bring him back another day to fix, or to have him go look for the part. Though I was worried about how long this task would take while we were paying by the hour, my husband and I aren't handy at all, so I didn't trust us to be able to take care of this task another time, so I chose to have Carlo take care of it for us. Carlos took off for the part, got back with lightening speed & was able to fix the shower. He also took care of a number of other smaller items that we needed complete, like patching & painting over a crack in drywall, fixing loose outlets, replacing our fire & CO2 detectors & fixing a broken drain stopper. He was able to fix most of what I needed to have done, and give me advice on future work that we plan to have done. The only reason for 4 vs. 5 stars is they were booked up about a week out, and I'd imagine there may be times that we have different needs where waiting a week could be problematic. I can't speak to their flexibility though if you did call with an urgent issue. Additionally, there was one job he couldn't do on his own that day, and we may have been able to establish this before he arrived with more discussion about the work that needed to be done up front. If that issue had been one of the main reasons we had them out, I would have been frustrated, however, it was secondary work that we needed complete & I do need to have to have them out again in a few weeks to help with some other things so not a big inconvenience in my case. All in all, I had a very positive experience with Candace, Carlos & team, and I will definitely have them back for our future handyman needs! read more

Had drywall repair in downtown condo. ~8 sq ft of dry wall repaired, reprimed/painted (new paint combine the 2). they charge $90 an hour. also had baseboards replaced. Had estimate of 425-485 for initial estimate after giving a picture through email to Candy their secretory (see pictures). Got estimates from HandiCo, Lakeshore Handyman, Handyman matters. 2 best estimates were from handyman matters and this company (AGH). Handyman matters quoted 490 including extra materials and Mike from that company was very thorough and seemed like he would do a good job because he was very detail oriented and wanted an entire list of everything that would be done (Step by step). So overall, the 2 companies were very close in estimate. A good handyman was very prompt because Candy handles all inquiries and was a pleasure to talk with about my concerns. I am very busy and couldn't be there during the time of repair. They needed 2 days to do the job. Jesse worked on it (in pictures). He said he took a total of 6 hours, and initial total was over 550 dollars, because I was paying for their parking. He also thought the estimate did not include the materials, so I was paying for that as well. I was initially frustrated that he blew the initial estimate time. I have run a home painting business back in college, so I knew construction service tricks, and bad business practice of blowing time estimates, and I would not stand for it. I talked with Candy through email again, and she lowered it down to 5 hours, and broke down all the costs. I paid for some extra materials that Jesse bought, but it was 25 dollars. Total was 503. Overall, smooth experience. Final product is great and it helps to have a secretory who is organized and quick on response. This helped me make my decision to go with this company. I had gotten several quotes on replacing my windows which wouldn't stay up. The replacement bids were $2000-$3000. We are Chicago homeowners of a 2-flat building. We first needed a rangehood installed in our unit and tiling work in the rental unit. Hmmm... Overall great job. People are nice. They repaired some gates outside and the repair did not work so they returned at no cost and fixed it. They work great now. Installed a basement window, removed old carpet from wood stairs, installed lights, built an "extension" to a washing machine pad (cement), showed me which way the air flows through my furnace, showed me how to turn the water off for the home, etc. Clay is very nice and you will want him to move in and repair everything. George has provided three extremely fair estimates for us - to drywall our attic, to build and install knee walls and collar ties and to hang an original-to-the-house-but-long-unhung kitchen swing door. We were very impressed with the level of detail and transparency in the proposals, and from our experience and the experience of a friend A Good Handyman also has skills in spades. While we will be calling A Good Handyman for the other two jobs when we are able to complete the job (unforeseen complications) George did come by to hang the door. He did an amazing job, and provided a level of attention to detail and care that I believe puts any competition at a disadvantage. He is also super nice and fun to talk to. It is pretty amazing to find a company that treats your home with more care than you do!
