I am so glad A & H is around. I've been needing to do some important child proofing, especially since my kiddo had decided she was going to try to start climbing out of her crib. But I don't know how to use a drill, and even if I did I would have wanted these things done correctly since my baby's safety is of utmost importance. Arvey came by the house for a free consultation and went through all the rooms to evaluate and give his recommendations for how to make each room safer for her. I also showed him a particular concern I had about anchoring a shelving unit to a brick wall and he said it was no problem. Arvey doesn't pressure you into making any of the improvements he suggests. Two of his employees came out within a week and took care of almost all the items we'd decided on. We got door locking mechanisms for the top of the door frame to make sure she stays out of places she shouldn't be and also stays in her room overnight. There's a new retractable gate blocking the kitchen which locks and which she's not able to crawl beneath. I really love this new gate; it's the type I originally wanted but handyman said it wouldn't work so the prior gate was a bit of a trip hazard and also took up more space. The refrigerator lock is much better than the one I bought, which broke within a day. And the cabinet locks and anchors for dressers and shelves make me feel much better about her level of safety. There's a few things left for them to do, since the materials for the gate around the fireplace are still stuck on the ocean. I'm also going to have them add a few more cabinet locks because they're superior to having to use the magnet locks or door clips, which is what we currently have. They're reasonably priced, no price gouging here. They even discovered that our outlets didn't need outlet covers because the outlets have some sort of feature where the electricity will stop if something's stuck inside, and for the number of outlet covers that we'd have otherwise needed that saved at least $100. I love dealing with a company that leads with integrity. If you have any doubts about your ability to child proof your home, want to make sure things are expertly installed, and/or want to use the most effective products (which you can't always get on Amazon or whatever), it's worth a call to Arvey to come out and take a look. read more

Can't say enough good things about this company, I live a very busy lifestyle and Arv manage to follow up every week with me for over a month till I finally had sometime to sit down and get the project going. Just like anyone else I did my homework and talked with few different companies recommended by yelp and A@H was by far the best price in some cases 50% less then the competition, I had put in 4 gates , fire place gate, whole bunch of safety stoppers on all the closet doors and main doors , all the bathroom cabinets and over 30 kitchen cabinets I think there was over 50 items on the list. The crew of installers showed on time and ready to it was all done same day and no issues pro install for sure without any minimal damage to any of your walls or stairs. The best part Is I wasn't able to be home for the installation and I when I was finally done with my long workday and came home everything was exactly what we discussed and no need for any come backs and later fixes. Again great overall experience and would highly recommend to this company to anyone else in the market for child proofing your house. read more

When my youngest began crawling, I knew I was past due to have a baby gate installed. A&H was one of two companies who had availability to work with me, and ultimately I liked their gate style more. The very beginning of the safety evaluation, though, began with a very bizarre dialogue: Arvey: "This outlet is unsafe." Me: "OK, can you fix it?" Arvey: "Just have your husband do it." Me: "...I don't have a husband.." Arvey: "OK, then your boyfriend." Me: "...... I don't have a boyfriend..." Not that any of that was his business, but I was HIRING him to BABYPROOF MY HOUSE. If HE couldn't put a safety outlet cover on - which he sells for what, $6? - why were we even doing this thing?? At the end, when we completed the walk through and he gave me his itemized list and instruction to highlight/tell him what I wanted to purchase and have installed, I added on the outlet cover myself. His handyman ended up putting an outlet cover on (and one other like it) with no issue. So, I'm not sure why we even had this ridiculous conversation right off the bat. To rewind a bit -- I also had some closet guards ordered, straps for the washer, dryer, and broiler (whose adhesive actually detached about a week later), an oven latch (worth every penny), and a retractable gate. Surprisingly, the cost was fair. The retractable gate is nice, but the material began showing wear after a few months of use. (My toddler has also been able to bypass it three times now, but luckily the baby has not.) I was also charged $60 for a "custom" piece since the top of my stairs has an odd L-shaped opening (longer on one side). The "custom" piece was a poorly painted piece of wood with an unsightly hole in the top. I really hated it and couldn't believe I was charged what I was. Arvey DID end up working with me on that, and had a more aesthetically pleasing piece installed instead. Except when it was, it was not cut properly, and there was a 1.5" overhang - also unsightly. It had to be corrected a second time then. It took 3 months total (October to January) from the initial safety evaluation to having the second piece trimmed down to be flush with the bannister/half wall I have. Given the amount of business that he does, I was surprised that Arvey would OK a final product install to look as it did. I don't consider myself incredibly picky, but let's have ugly additions (like baby gates) look as good as possible, right? One final thought - I assumed he'd do a complete evaluation of my home and find all sorts of unsafe things. Instead of focusing on things like an unsecured sliding door that goes out to a deck with stairs (*I* brought up needing a lock/latch and was also told he doesn't do those [?!], but to look at the hardware store..), he told me that the childproofing I had already done (like doorknob covers) were unsatisfactory and my toddler would soon figure them out (he's incredibly smart, almost 3, and he hasn't yet....and most of the adults who have come over need a tutorial). Or that I needed a $60 pad for the side of the tub. Because he remedied the issue and communication was also good, I'm bumping to 4 stars. Given my experience, I think a layman with foresight (and handyman ability) could adequately childproof their home vs. hiring a company. So would I use them again? Probably not. read more

I am very pleased with my experience with A&H Child Proofers! My son was getting into every drawer, the fireplace, etc. I found A&H on Google. Arvey answered my phonecall himself, and scheduled an appointment within just a few days. I asked for an evaluation and installation all in one day. Arvey himself came to my home, and was very pleasant, cheerful and considerate (took off his shoes upon entering my home). Arvey assessed our home for child proofing needs, and made recommendations, provided options, and allowed me to choose what and how my home was child proofed. I had seen many people use a gate built around the fireplace, for instance. I knew that I did not prefer this option. Arvey offered me an option that worked much better for my taste: a piece of plexiglass velcroed to the face of the fireplace (which can be removed easily so that we can use the fireplace), and when it is no longer needed, can be uninstalled with a little goo-gone. (no holes in my wall!) All in one day, Arvey did the evaluation, and installed most items that very day. Arvey ordered special gates for our stairway that match our wood floors, and had a piece of plexi-glass made to cover the opening of our fireplace. Arvey educated me, not only about what items I might wish to install in my home to protect my child (securing book shelves, dressers and flat screen tvs, drawers, outlets, stairway gates, etc), but also: how to lock the buttons on my oven, how to lock the buttons on my dish washer, the danger of plastic dry cleaning bags within a child's reach, the danger of round outlet covers. He also asked me if my son had ever tried to remove the air vents from the floor. I said no. Wouldn't you know, the next day, my son did that very thing. Arvey came back to our home to secure the vents to the floor for me. He gave me options for the future, which he will come to install if I need them: latches for the bedroom and bathroom doors, securing the refrigerator door. Arvey kept my concerns for safety and appearance in mind as he installed each item, and made recommendations about what we could do to make our home safer. I could tell that Arvey was committed to my satisfaction - if there was something I didn't like, or wasn't working for me, he was happy to fix it, change it, or provide another option. We used A&H for baby gates to protect our 12-month old and were very disappointed. I'm giving 2 Stars only because we received a full refund. Arvey comes to your house and does a well-honed, scare-tactic type sell. You will not be pressured into buying anything, but his stories of all the ways your house is going to kill your child will certainly play in your head as you are tallying up the cost of his recommendations. And if you want to know the divorce rate after a child dies in the home, he's got that statistic for you, too. But, we were really interested in having gates installed properly. He told us that the gates he sells are expensive because they are patent-pending and not even available in the US market yet. He also said he had a method to install them that wouldn't ruin our banisters - he attaches a stained piece of wood to the banister with a plastic tie down and screws a hole into that. That was all fine, but as we made clear - we were mostly concerned that our five year old could use the gates, which meant that they had to be self-latching on close. Boy...what a joke. The hardware on the gates installed were cheap plastic, not self-latching, and cost upwards of $200 each. After the install, we called him and said we were not happy because I could hardly get the gates to close, let alone my daughter. He said to live with them for a few more weeks, and if we were still unhappy, he would come back and take them out. Before those few weeks were up, the gate at the top of the basement stairs fell off the wall! It was installed with a simple screw that went less than a half-inch into our drywall. No anchor was used, and the screw obviously was not long enough to secure the gate in place. I'm sure the struggle to get the gate to close every time we walked through it had finally wrestled the screw out of the wall. Needless to say that our child could have tumbled down the stairs at any time had he been leaning against the gate. A&H had installed four death traps for just under $1,000. Once notified, Arvey came that week and begrudgingly took everything back and refunded our money - but not before poorly patching the holes in our newly painted walls and leaving nicks in our banisters. That weekend, we bought $85 tension gates that we picked up from Toys R Us. They are self-latching, sturdy, and won't ruin our walls. They are working perfectly. Also, the prices here are outrageous ($8 per outlet cover to give you an idea). If we did everything recommended, our whole house would have cost between $4k - $5k. read more

We had 2 experts install childproofing throughout our condo for our 6 month old after a very thorough conversation and estimate from Arvey (the owner). They scheduled the installation right away, showed up early, did exactly what they said they would (outlets, doorstops, anchored furniture, rubber edging around coffee table) and were kind, courteous and quick. He was realistic about household dangers, but it did not feel like he was guilt-tripping you into anything. I love this company. At first we child proofed ourselves, then after realizing that we had hired a Nanny with a daughter who was quickly becoming a climber we knew we needed expert help. We hired A.H. Childproofing and could not have been happier! I was worried that they were going to be unreasonably priced but I wrong. For what we paid at retail stores he provided better material and installed for the same or sometimes slightly more/less then what we could have done. Zero stars. His guys installed baby proofing on kitchen and bathroom cabinets and waited until after we paid and tipped them to tell us they drilled through 10 cabinets. Arvey was rude and never once apologized. He did try to have cabinets fixed (which was 10 days with no doors - not exactly babyproofed) but was unable to fully repair. We agreed to catch up later to have them replaced but now he will not return messages. Terrible experience. read more

Overall we are happy with the actual work, but a bit annoyed that the estimate for the gate was $225 and then when they came to install it ended up being almost $300. I feel like the whole point of the initial visit is to measure everything and give an honest estimate. I feel like we overpaid and we will not be using them again. read more
