Great place to go for brunch as long as you aren't counting carbs. Street parking only. We went on a rainy Sunday and found parking pretty quickly. Not metered, so you should be able to park for free on the street. Even though it was pouring when we went, there still was a pretty long line to get in. I can't even imagine what the line would be like on a sunny day. The wait went by pretty fast though. The tables inside are pretty close together, but not uncomfortable. We tried the demon lover with a side of hash browns. The demon lover is a waffle and a pancake, we opted for both gravy and syrup. The chicken is delicious. It's spiced just to perfection and the quality of the chicken is great. It's fresh, no fat, and just falls off. The waffle was good. Try it with both sauces. I always compare my chicken and waffles to Roscoe's. The chicken tasted a bit fresher than Roscoe's, different flavor/spices/taste. The waffle at 900 Grayson doesn't really compare to Roscoe's waffles. It's good, but not great. Combined with the waffle, it's a very tasty breakfast and totally worth the wait. The Grayson burger was good. It was big and the meat was very juicy. I enjoy eating their French fries with their home made hot sauce. It definitely had a nice kick it to it. I also ordered the Demon Lover. I enjoyed the fact that the chicken was very moist. It came with a waffle on the bottom. I had ordered gravy on top which I wished I had also ordered the syrup with it. The prices were decent for the portion size. Their menu is different due to all the ethnicities. I can see why vegetarians people would enjoy it because the people here care about what people are interested in eating and sharing what they have available that's good. We went here today for my birthday brunch. I had to pick up the tab, what a rip off! 900 Grayson is located in a converted house in a mixed use neighborhood in West Berkeley. Parking was easy today, but I can see it being hit or miss. On recommendation, we had the Demon Lover (900 Grayson's version of fried chicken and waffles) and the Tom Boy (poached eggs and corned beef hash). To clarify, the Demon Lover is a fried chicken cutlet, so this dish is well suited for those of you with bone phobias. The chicken was very tasty, as was the gravy that was served over it. I couldn't bring myself to pay an extra $2 for the maple syrup and have the flavors all muddled up. I was less enthusiastic about the waffle. It appeared to be a whole grain waffle of some sort, and while the flavor was ok, the waffle was very soggy and unappealing. My two bites of the Tom Boy left me underwhelmed. It wasn't bad, just wasn't 'knock your socks off' good. The lime Rickey on the other hand was excellent. The service and wait time were both good as well. I would come back again to try their burger. Any place that names themselves after their street address may lead you to believe that they have no artistic sense. However, it appears they put all their brain power into creating tasty dishes instead. A great lunch spot! The dishes are definitely fresh and unique, although a bit on the pricey side for lunch...about $13 for a ahi tuna sandwich with fries. However, a great wasabi sauce, and seared almost perfectly so I was a happy camper. Maybe it's because I've been eating some pretty crappy food in Berkeley since starting work here, but so far I'll pay up to get some quality. Been wanting to try this place out for a while! Finally got the chance to hit up this place and boy was it worth the wait! I got what everyone always gets here, the demon lover (chicken and waffles). It came with two pieces of boneless chicken breast and one big waffle. Since this was my first time here, I might as well go all out and get both the gravy and maple syrup! They did not disappoint. I'm not a huge fan of sweets, but I might as well try the maple syrup. I liked at first, but I eventually got tired of the sweetness. That's just my preference though. The maple syrup was good overall. I love the gravy though! I would definitely recommend the gravy over the syrup if you had to pick one. Next time I'm in the neighborhood and order their demon lover, I'll probably just get the gravy. Here's a tip! If you and a friend both order the demon lover then maybe one should get the gravy and one should get the maple syrup to avoid the additional $2 charge/order to have both syrup and gravy ;) I was kinda worried that the chicken breast would be dry, but to my surprise it was juicy and nicely crispy! The gravy poured all over the sweet crispy chicken over a warm waffle is definitely the definition of comfort food. I came here during veterans day and the wait for a table of 4 was roughly 15-20 minutes? I arrived 30 minutes after it opened so the wait was not that bad for me. Parking here can be difficult because you can only park on the street. My group of friends ended up parking 2 blocks away? so I recommend dropping someone off to put your group name on the list. Make sure everyone is together before your name is called out or you risk losing your spot! The restaurant is small but there is an outdoor patio seating behind. The waiting list doesn't have an option for you to choose inside or outside, so you get want table is available. Service here was fine for my group and we didn't spend much else looking at any other food items other than the demon lovers. All my friends except me got the gravy while I tried the syrup with my demon lover. The syrup was not that good in my opinion...I think it had vinegar or some other stuff mixed into it, so it's not your typical syrup that comes from a grocery store. The gravy on the other hand was so creamy and delicious. It matches much better with the chicken and waffles in my opinion and they had a powder spice on top to add a nice kick in the sauce. You can also ask to get the sauce on the side other than poured over the chicken, but this depends on diner preference. To get both sauces (gravy and syrup) I think it is a $2.00 extra? The price range for this place is average, considering it is brunch in the bay. Portions are fine, but can be borderline small if you typically eat a lot in your meals. I got the fried chicken sandwich $12.50 and my husband got the demon lover with gravy $15. The fried chicken sandwich was dry. The sandwich didn't come with mayonnaise and the cole slaw on it didn't help. The cole slaw was just okay for me. The chicken was crunchy and they give you a big chunk of it but it was slightly on the dry side, juice it is most definitely not. The herb fried were delicious though. Mehhh. I don't know what the big deal is. I thought it was just OK. My friends and I each got the Demon Lover with gravy on the side. In hindsight, at least ONE of us should have gotten syrup on the side instead so that we could have had both gravy and syrup and not get charged the extra $2. The plate came with two pieces of chicken which was good because they were thin and the breading was flavorful. However, I did not appreciate the soggy waffle that was underneath the chicken. I specifically got my gravy on the side to prevent soggyness. Sigh. However, others at my table had okay-toasted waffles. I guess I'll have to request that if I ever return. In addition to the usual Tapatio and Tabasco, they had a homemade hot sauce that was pretty yummy. The Demon Lover is described as "Spicy Buttermilk Fried Fulton Valley Chicken Paillard, Buttermilk Waffle & Old-Fashioned Cream Gravy or Vermont Maple Syrup." You might as well just said chicken fingers and waffles with gravy or syrup for the laymen out there. I wish I had known it was a paillard before getting hyped about grubbing on some chicken and waffles. The chicken itself was nicely seasoned and had a great crunchy skin but the meat was slightly dry. Lucky they slather all that gravy on so most people won't notice. And when I hear fried chicken, I don't want a boneless chicken breast! You gotta get down and dirty with your fried chicken. And what's the deal with the waffle? It had no texture at all kinda like mush. Also bland and flavorless but luckily I sprung the 2 bucks for the syrup and gravy combo. This isn't going to be fair. So it turns out that I am a bit of a purist. I was *told* a few things to get at my recent trip to 900 Grayson by a few friends that I trust. One said, the burger. Another said, the Ruben. The one who said, the Ruben, also said, the chicken and waffles. I went with the burger. My reasons were long and convoluted, and I will spare you the gory details. Here is where I draw my line. If you like the burger at the Corner Bistro in Manhattan, you will love the burger at Grayson. I guess in the end, I would rather have a simple, plain burger that was incredibly tasty, than a gussied up burger loaded with toppings. But that is what I ordered, and they did a fine job with that. Even though, I might argue my medium rare was a few degrees over. But it is hard to cook thin burgers to the right temperature. Not overdone enough to send back, but just enough to lessen my joy. The place is very cute. And I do love cute. And the menu is very cute too, but I am not so crazy about a cute menu. Those two cancel each other out. My take on the menu was that this place specializes in calorie bombs. And conflates fat with flavor. And that isn't fair either. Because all restaurants do that... however most are more subtle. I mean seriously... think of the three things that were recommended? The ingredients themselves were very good, and Grayson gets points there. I have no problem paying for quality, and this was in fact quality food. But as other reviewers have suggested, their service was brusque at best. I don't particularly care, except for the time I had to pour my own wine at the French Laundry. So overall, I believe it has some strong pros. But it also has some significant weaknesses. In my mind, they balance out, and this place falls in that deadly middle ground. Although, if I were feeling more charitable, I might give 3.5*. read more

But this Saturday, we biked over and even tolerated the 30 minute wait (which ended up being only 15-20 minutes). Fred got the Demon Lover (with gravy) and I got the Burger. Both were very hearty and tasty. Would the demon lover with syrup have been as drenched in the sweet sticky goodness?!? Great soy mocha. The chicken and gravy were both great, though needed a bit of salt. OJ was excellent, perhaps fresh squeezed in house, not sure. But the waffle was another story. I am a fanatic about waffle crispness and this one arrived way too soft for my liking. Everything did taste great, but the waffle should have made this review a 5 star rave. My friend and I had split steak frites ($15) and Demon-Lover aka chicken n waffles ($13.50). Good thing we were splitting because one of us would've been dissatisfied with her lunch. The steak was the better entree. It was maybe a 6-8 oz flank steak with compound butter, shoestring fries, and salad. Steak-appreciation is new to me. This one was cooked to medium doneness. Phenomenal. Not too rare and juicy with each savory morsel. I'm not sure what else was in the compound butter, but I didn't hesitate to slather it over the meat. The fries were sliced thin, with skin...fried to remarkable perfection. Good fries are hard to come by. I haven't had any good ones in recent days. The salad comprised of big uncut leaves of Romaine lettuce, topped with slices of beets. That was my only gripe. I dunno if I'm too lazy to cut the lettuce but I wasn't too motivated to cut them into consumable pieces instead of stuffing entire pieces down, like a barbarian. I gave up after a meager attempt. The renown Demon-Lover was lackluster in both texture and flavor, contrary to many testimonials of fellow Yelpers. The breading and chicken seemed more on the dry side. Where's the crunch? The smaller your party, it seems like the faster you get seated. You can also get coffee while you're waiting, and they'll make it part of your tab and refill it once you get a table. The open patio is only good if the weather is nice. Whether you get the demon lover with gravy or syrup - you really cannot go wrong. Their waffle is more on the soft side - but it works with the crispiness of the chicken, which has no bones!! I've also tried their grayson burger, and that was really good too! It was more of a barbequesauce burger than your typical ketchup burger. Their "herb fries" were nothing special though ... but the burger was yummy enough. It is a pretty small restaurant, so I would not be surprised if you have to wait a bit for a table during peak times. Service isn't super attentive, so don't expect to be waited on hand and foot. Came here on a Thursday afternoon and it was packed! Charming lil restaurant for breakfast/lunch. Great house coffee! They also serve beer and mixed drinks which was nice. Outside patio was closed bc of the rain but I can see it being really nice to enjoy a meal when weather is nice. Love love their Demon Lover fried chicken but not so much the waffle. Chicken was perfectly seasoned and crunchy. However, buttermilk waffle was a disappointment. As you can see from picture...looks like they use pancake batter or something but it was flat and definitely not a waffle. Would recommend they do something about that since I've read a few complaints from others. Partner ordered the Grayson burger and we highly recommend! Perfectly cooked medium and juicy. The gravy was probably the most delicious thing I've ever eaten! The waffles were a little soggy because of the gravy but the taste made up for it. The chicken was good, not the best I've had. The best chicken and waffles ever - definitely worth the wait. Truly life-changing, especially if you get both the maple syrup and gravy. It makes the brunch wait worth it, or go for their midday meal and there may not be a wait. Their 7th & Grayson (tofu scramble) is also delicious - best tofu scramble I've had. Their Charlie was good but the tuna was a bit under-seasoned for me. The bread was delicious though. read more

900 Grayson is a great place. It's a small store converted into a restaurant. It's a great vibe! We got there around 2 o'clock on Saturday (they close at 230 on Saturday's) and we're say by 2:10 and eating the delicious Demon Lover staple dish by 2:25! It's a great vibe and the food is cooked very well and service was great. Definitely will be returning to try other dishes ! read more
