Wonderful atmosphere outside on a warm morning. Nice staff. Painfully nice. Beautiful interior and well-kept patio. Slow as molasses service, breakfast was something I couldn've made at home for a fraction of the cost, and I dunno, I was just annoyed after we paid the bill. I love love love places in my neighborhood. I love that this is a converted house in an area that hasn't seen too many breakfast/lunch places. They're trying really hard, but when I look at the beautiful artsy square plate and see that it is dwarfing the eggs and hashbrown thingamabob-fried-in-too-much-butter, I'm reminded of the 1980s. I think my husband and I have literally eaten at every breakfast joint in Berkeley. 900 Grayson is relatively new, we were driving by on a Sunday at 2 pm, so we decided to pop in for coffee and some type of treat. "Feel free to sit down anywhere", said the friendly waitress, even though we were just opting for a light coffee treat. We sat down at a two-top, and an overly-officious waiter gave us menus. A few minutes later, he came to take our orders, and it became apparent that we were expected to make it worth his while. Always wanting to please, I added an order of fries with my cafe au lait, and the hubby got toast he hadn't planned on getting. "Well, you should have gotten paper napkins, those are $.50 each" the waiter sniffed, indicating our cloth napkins. Say WHAT???!!?? Unfortunately, although there are a plethora of smartass responses to this weirdo comment, we were speechless. Our order was handed off to the waitress for the rest of our time. We paid, and did the DINKs-that-spend-way-too-much-on-eating-out-and-schmooze-the-owners thing with a man that appeared to be one of the owners on our way out. I'll tell you why, first and foremost this place gets high marks: the service. I dunno what it is about the waiters there, but they seem to lack a sycophantic bone in their body. There was such a tone of intelligence, and genuineness in the way they communicated with our table. Neither overly nice nor overly smug/slacker-ish, just like they knew their shit and they knew they were going to give us a great lunch service and that all parties involved would come out of the transaction happy. And indeed we did. The food, also, is rad. The pommes frites are dyno-mite, ask for them with a side of the sriracha aioli, and thank me in the morning. I had a lime-ginger Rickey that was perfecto for the heat-stroke/heat-wave that rolled through. They sat us outside, in the shade. I ordered the lady boy salad, which you have to love on name alone. My friends got the pork sandwich (the colonel and ms. piggy) and the chopped salad (hello shoestring onions.) I shouldn't judge others, but I found it pretty disgusting to watch most of the restaurant eating fried chicken and a waffel doused in gravy (demon lover). I tried a bite and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but really no one there needed those extra calories. But, if that's what you're looking for, then you'll enjoy it. There's a wait but worth it!! We ordered the Demon Lover, shoestring fries?, and the cobb salad. They were all super delicious! I have got to admit, the chicken and waffles are definitely the way to go here. My boyfriend ordered the Demon Lover (chicken and waffles) and I was super jealous. My Cobb Salad was very very delicious but it was a bit greasy for my taste. I loved the crisp onions on top of the salad though (which is the same as the shoestring fries.. if thats what they were called. I forgot.). I would recommend to go here to at least try! I usually lean towards the healthier option on a given menu, but it was Valentine's Day brunch, and I was going for the chicken and waffles aka The Demon Lover. Man, was it worth it. I'm from the South, so I know what good fried chicken tastes like, and this was spot-on. The gravy adds great flavor and smoothness, and the syrup brings that perfect amount of sweetness. The dish comes with either gravy or syrup, but I feel like if you're springing for chicken and waffles, you're doing yourself a disservice by not spending the extra $2 to get both. We also shared their version of a corned beef hash. The poached eggs on top were perfectly cooked, and the corned beef was generously portioned. Libations were also delicious. However, the Demon Lover was the real star. The whole time I ate it I was thinking to myself, "If I die of a heart attack while eating this, it will have been totally worth it." Two words: Demon Lover. Let me preface this: I've had Roscoe's. It's great, but this place takes chicken and waffles to a whole new level. The chicken is cooked beautifully, and the waffles soak up whatever topping you decide to grace your chicken with. You have the option of getting either gravy or syrup as your topping. I recommend getting both - it's $2 more, but worth every penny. They also make their own hot sauce - I like to add it in because it gives every bite a kick. I ordered the Demon Lover and it came with a STRING OF HAIR fried into the batter of the chicken. I immediately inform the server, I did not want to make it a big deal. She apologized (once) and said she'll get me a new one. The new one came out right away. But after that, there weren't any remorse or comp of meal or anything. Not from the server, not from the manager. Nothing! Instead a full charge of the meal and send you off with a thanks. I didn't want to make a scene or a big deal, but expect a food service business to provide better remorseful apologies, especially when hair or other foreign objects are found on their food that's being served to their customers. This just made my top 3 worst dining experiences ever. The male host was rude and unwelcoming (older man, white hair, button down shirt w khakis). We got a wobbly table with wobbly chairs by their trash area and it took over an hour to get our food. During that time, our waiter brought out sauces after 30 mins. We thought our food would come shortly after. We were wrong. After noticing that customers who came in after us were getting their meals, I spoke to the waiter who looked confused. Then, a large glass of OJ was delivered that no one asked for followed by my dish which I couldn't eat because no one gave us any silverware or napkins, and we had to wait another 15 mins after that for my partner to receive her dish. When her meal came out, I got my same dish again. The host, upon noticing the duplicate dish, was visibly upset and irritated, creating a very uncomfortable ambience for us. We wanted to ask for salt and pepper and water, but the staff left us alone after the meals were dropped. In short, the host needs to work on his customer service skills and I'm pretty sure the waiter forgot to place our order (that's your one job!). Won't come back here ever again. read more

My friends have been raving about this place for quite some time now, particularly about their Chicken and Waffles. I'm a sucker for fried chicken and waffles, and one of my all time favorite spots is Brown Suger Kitchen, Oakland - which I think serves an awesome dish. So with expectations high, and BSK as my baseline...i was a bit disappointed because it wasn't what I expected. DOn't expect your southern style, deep fried, finger linking type dish. The chicken was almost like a chicken breast patty(like chicken fried steak-like) flat and fried. It wasn't your typical "fried" chicken drumstick, thigh, breast. Their "Demon's Lover" dish was definitely delicious, had a subtle spicy kick, but not as good as BSK. Okay, fine..i might be comparing apples and oranges, but I'm just saying ...don't expect BSK. In terms of the other items, my wife ordered a pulled pork sandwich, which looked okay. Overall, the service was great. Greeted nicely at the door, promptly updated with their daily specials. Luckily we didn't have to wait too long since we were there a little before noon. This place does pack up quick during lunch time, so I would suggested getting their before noon. Otheriwse it could be a long wait. Ambience of the place is great, not what you would first expct from the outside. I did enjoy the painting of a nude lady...(don't tell my wife). Went here for the first time last month. Had Great hash browns and and omelet with a waffle. Overall a good breakfast ( especially the Hash Browns). Oops! Returned a few weeks later and was surprised the hash browns were oily and undercooked past the well done exterior. Eggs were very good though. The Demon Lover and Breakfast are both great options. The Demon Lover is a chicken and waffle combo and one of the best I've ever had. Get it with gravy. The Breakfast is awesome because it has a crunchy hash brown. Yummy! It was so good, I had to order a second side order. They're only open till 2:30PM and their menu is different on Weekdays and Weekends (so it's worth it to check the menu before going). The Demon Lover seems to be a staple though. I have been to 900 Grayson twice with a new couple who are both regulars. They know the menu by heart, and order by phone before we arrive. As a result, I do not remember the menu and I have never had a problem with seating. Unfortunately this also means I have to deal with lots of kissing and baby talk during our meal. I try to ignore the two even though they keep trying to bring me in to their conversation. Normally I wouldn't have this problem, but because my last relationship started in a very similar fashion, noticing a nuzzle or a peck can be punishing. Luckily the burger here is an excellent distraction from this. After smothering the bun with aoli, it is probably the best in the East Bay. The fries are crisp and delicious as well. I definitely have to say that I love local eateries, small mom and pop establishments, and hole-in-the wall places (though they better be clean). This place is a great local breakfast and lunch place that has been around for some time. At times, there are droves of people waiting for seats but it's definitely one of those gems that are worth the wait. A group of 4-5 people can be accommodated, but anymore and it becomes difficult as there aren't that many tables. While waiting, if there is room inside, you can order coffee and hang out at the window and/or the counter. The staff can sure make a great mocha. Now ladies and gents, there is one menu item that you have to try at least once. Repeat after me... "demon lover!" This is definitely one of their signature breakfast items. It consists of a nicely prepared waffle (perfect amount of crunchiness), topped with a fried chicken piece, covered in either syrup or country gravy sprinkled with spicy pepper flakes. I would definitely recommend the gravy over the syrup. If you are worried about the dish being too spicy, don't. The spiciness only comes from the pepper flakes. It wasn't bad at all but I'm sure you can ask them to leave it out. I was definitely caught in yummylicious nirvana with each bite of the crunchy waffle, perfectly seasoned and fried chicken, and flavorful gravy. My mouth is watering again while writing this review. I was kinda disappointed that I simply didn't have enough room to finish the food but I took it home to enjoy it later on, The freshly brewed coffee was really good with a kick and the staff were uber friendly and very attentive. 900 Grayson gets props first off just because they serve not-so-traditional breakfast foods. The Demon Lover, though it has a very non-breakfast title, is definitely a breakfast of champions. It is chicken-n-waffles done in a unique fashion. This was also probably my first order of chicken-n-waffles with local meat. The chicken had a perfectly seasoned and crispy crust, but I prefer my meat a little juicier. Nonetheless, the chicken was great overall. The waffle was a bit flat and limp, but it was also very flavorful. The gravy was the perfect binder for both components. I skipped the $2 syrup, but that choice made the dish a perfect blend of savory components. The chicken had a slight zing, the waffle was light and earthy, and the gravy had a light creaminess. Though this was not a perfect plate of chicken and waffles, it definitely stood up in the face of Southern food. It was a unique take on one of my favorite American classics, and I was glad to eat it in jazzed up in the California fashion. 900 Grayson is a nice neighborhood joint with a casual atmosphere and solid service. Ok...so this place had some serious hype to live up to. I've seen it featured on a couple of local tv shows, seen the rave reviews on yelp, seen the never ending crowd of people always hovering outside the door to this place and heard some great things about it from friends. Finally, this past weekend the hubs and I had the opportunity to go with some friends and try this place out once and for all. First of all, if you're going to come here, come either really early or really late. It's one of those small joints where tons of people flock to for brunch so if you're hungry around lunch time and are thinking to yourself..."900 Grayson sounds good"...everyone else in Berkeley has the same idea, so be prepared to wait if you come during peak eating times. With that being said, we showed up at a peak eating time...well not really, but kind of...1 o'clock on a holiday. We expected to wait so the fact that we had to wait and put our name down on the list didn't surprise our group of 4...it just makes sense that the wait for a table for more than 2 or 3 is going to be longer at a small place such as this and we were okay with that. What we were not okay with was waiting an extra 20 minutes than we had to (we waited for over an hour total) for a table due to the hosts totally skipping over our name and letting another party of 4 go ahead of us. So just be wary...when you put your name down, check in often to make sure your name isn't skipped, because it happens...and when you're in starvation mode, you don't want to be skipped. Now, on to the food...once we were finally seated, the waitress came around fast and took our orders. I already knew what I wanted...the demon lover...which is apparently one of the signature dishes that this joint is known for. It's chicken and waffles with your choice of a gravy sauce or maple syrup. I opted for the gravy and it was really good. The chicken was cooked well...they use chicken strips so no pesky bones to get in the way. The waffle was cooked well too...it was the standard sized waffle (i.e. not a belgian sized one) and paired well with the chicken and gravy. The portion is pretty good, I was pleasantly full at the end of the meal, but not overly so. The food came out pretty fast which was good, which helped offset the whole waiting debacle earlier in the visit. I'm giving this place 4 stars because, as much as I thought the food was good, the wait was ridiculous and this place isn't really open all the time so I feel like you really have to make plans and revolve your entire day around this place in advance to eat here. Of course the fact that a place is busy and has a long wait shouldn't be considered a bad thing for a restaurant...i can see why people flock here, the demon lover is great. Since this was just our first experience, I should probably try to come back and time my visit differently and maybe then I'll update it with a higher review. But for now, I can say it's definitely a must try spot for their chicken/waffles at least once, but there are other brunch/breakfast places nearby that are just as good if not better and easier to get into. Only time will tell if we venture out to this place and try our luck with the wait again. read more
