The seating whether it's front or back is warm and comfortable, 2 different feels so to speak which is really a great option. When I haven't been able to get to 80 for a while and then get there with a friend or more I invariably binge reserve and sneak in afew more times immediately! There's always something craveworthy on their creatively changing menu. And the bartender always so accommodating. Even the hostess is exceptional and a creative! Concord is so lucky! parking on the plaza premise as well as plenty of street. the place reminds me of a speakeasy. there's a blue door with a small sign on the first floor and nothing else. you go in, elevator or stairs, you end up in the restaurant. it's a relaxing comfortable atmosphere. white tablecloth on every table. we ordered a couple cocktails. well crafted and balanced, not overtly sweet. for reference, i find a can of soda too sweet. it's tapas style now, apparently a shift from before as i was told by the server. also was told the menu changes frequently. so we got busy ordering: uni toast, mushroom, foie gras eclair, panisse, scallops, bass, duck. everything was attention to detail. you can taste the thought behind each dish as everything was well crafted and balanced. there's a french component to the menu. dessert was KOUIGN AMANN and CHOCOLATE CREMEUX, both fantastic in their own ways. neither overtly sweet. will definitely return. read more

We had a really great dinner at 80 Thoreau. The apps (bluefin tuna, cauliflower, and caviar waffles) were all very good. The tuna was fresh, the cauliflower was flavorful and the caviar waffles were unique. They also provided a bread service which was excellent. The entrees were also very very good, in addition to the drinks. This really rivals some of the top fancy restaurants, even in Boston. The atmosphere is also really unique - fancy, but not stuffy. This was a delicious surprise. Set in an old train station with exposed beams, the ambiance was cozy and inviting. I had the corn and tomato tasting menu which was spectacular. Although flank steak can be chewy I did figure they would have the best grade. Not so, I chewed and chewed and spit most of it out. Usually that is a safe meal, but not here. On a business trip in the Concord area and checked out 80 Thoreau. One thing to note is that this place is tricky to find. It looks like it doesn't exist when you get there but it's right next to the eye glass store. It's on the second floor so you need to take a hallway with stairs which is why it was hard to find. Once I did eventually find it, the overall experience was great. This is more of a fine dining restaurant so the prices are expensive, however, the food was amazing. They have a limited menu so it makes it easy to choose and everything was very very fresh. On top of the food, the service was great! The bartender was very very friendly and our waiter was attentive and gave great recommendations! Would recommend trying this place out if you are in the concord area read more

This restaurant has been in this location for more than a decade, so it is clearly giving the audience what it wants. I used to give it five stars, but it just isn't as good as it used to be. Of course, the ambiance remains great and feels trendy. The service is high, although I find their policy of having the waiters not give their names puzzling. Our waiter said it is because they work as a team and you don't need to ask for any one person. I frankly like the connection The food, unfortunately, seems ordinary. For example, the striped bass I ordered was perfectly cooked, but bland. I was hoping for some herbs, or a sauce with flavor. Sadly the gazpacho sauce was like a bland watered down tomato soup. For nearly $40 for the main course, I expect much more. The appetizers were good. The zucchini and eggplant was nicely done. A friend who was with us said the duck stroganoff was tasty. A visit to 80 Thoreau is always a treat, but even more so when they have a special menu. Their tomato and corn tasting wraps up today and it was fantastic. They are located on the top floor of the Concord Depot, the former train station. The space is charming both in the bar area and the dining room. I've been going there long enough to see dozens of servers come and go, but they are always knowledgeable and attentive. My only disappointment is that the bar burger is no longer available. My wife and I went there for a nice Friday night dinner. Simply put, it was the best dining experience we have both had in a very long time. The food is plated beautifully, the menu creative but approachable, the portions just right. I had sautéed organic red, purple and orange carrots on a bed of labna with mint and dill for an appetizer and the short rib for my main entree. A martini mixed exactly as I had asked and I got to choose from about 10 different gins. My wife had scallops in a broth that was nicely seasoned along with a salad. We also shared chickpea fries with our cocktails and a chocolate mousse, both excellent. 80 Thoreau is an interesting restaurant with food like you might see on a TV cooking competition but in the comfort and accessibility of a quaint Boston suburb. Unfortunately when it comes to steak; they miss the mark on the cook and served me raw steak, the odd thing is that they cut it in half for me and could definitely see it was raw but served it anyways. That's not sauce in the photo it's the dark red/blue of a beef that might've been previously frozen and then seared at high heat. It looked like, felt like, Ahi Tuna steak! Outside was grey and tough, inside raw and chewy. I asked for medium rare. I actually doubted myself a bit and cut into it and tried it because how could it be the chef cut it in half and saw it and served it anyways? They took it back and cooked it longer without much fuss so that was good. Rest of the food was alright. It's great they rotate their menu often. Right now the chicken ballotine is really nice to try. I would skip the chawanmushi. They seem to handle mushrooms really well so give anything with mushrooms a try even if you don't like them that much. Morels were great! For dessert they have a chocolate cake that is quite good. Very dense and moist probably flourless to some degree. The staff here is super nice and really attentive. That was the highlight for me. I read in some reviews that the place is hard to find. I thought it was easy to find. Parked in their parking lot, counted from 84, 82, 80 on the door signs. If you're coming from the other direction just look at the building number and maybe it's 76, 78, 80? It's not that hard? Lol Worth trying! read more

But the waitstaff, oh my, from Nichole, the bartender, to Emily and Rachel, our servers, were outstanding, not just for the service but for how they engaged us--two guys about a decade past the best-used-by date. For apperizers we had the crudo paired with grapefruit and chives and the ginger carrot soup which had crushed walnuts and goat cheese - the flavors complimented each other perfectly! Dinner was the squid ink tagliatelle and while the flavors were delicious the pasta to seafood ratio was off. The menu said it included jonah crab but my dish only had a handful of shrimp and calamari. Service was where things fell apart a bit. Our main server did not check in once on how the food was or if we needed anything. Will try indoor next time, everyone seated at the bar seemed to be having a great time. Well this place sure took a nose dive. Rude and pretentious servers. I didn't feel comfortable ordering or asking any questions because of the servers demeanor and snobby attitude. Hello buddy - I'm paying you - don't be haute. The bar is stingy about the amount of alcohol they give you. The portions are laughably cheap. There's no passion or thought behind the first, second and third courses. The meats and fish certainly weren't fresh. They offered meals a standard home cook could make at home - and much better. It was depressing, and literally and figuratively left a bad taste in my mouth. I guess the honeymoon phase of 80 Thoreau has long been over. Won't ever come back. We live in walking distance and have only been here a handful of times because we have a hard time getting excited to go back. It took us about 4-years, for example, to use a gift card here our friends generously gifted us. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, but can be a bit unnecessarily fancy at time, referring to gin with a pine flavoring as "herbal forward" or mustard as "mou-stard". (I grew up with the guilty waiter and it wasn't an area with "mou-stard"). The food (and beverages) tastes great but I wish they just had at least one simple option so we could go without dropping $100/pp. Despite the required drive, I prefer Salt Box 100x. read more

Man I really wanted to love this place, especially after hearing so many good things about it over the years. But there were just too many annoyances that brought the experience down. We arrived on a Saturday evening for our 7:30 reservation. If you've never been here you WILL be confused on how to enter. It's a little weird. Anyway, the host was friendly and we were seated right away. The restaurant was busy and the atmosphere was lively. A good vibe and most definitely upscale without being stuffy. So far so good.... We waited a long time before we saw a waiter. I know it was busy. I know about labor shortages. So, ok, let's move on. Once our waiter made an appearance, he was a nice enough fellow. We weren't drinking so we placed our orders and were told some bread would be on the way. That took an eternity. Then the food took an eternity. Then an eternity to clear our plates. Then an eternity to get a single cup of decaf....which by the way was the most wretchedly disgusting cup of coffee I've ever had. Somewhere in the middle of this I used the mens room. The smell was horrible, like backed up sewer gas. Our entrees were good. Not exactly breathtaking, but good. The meat was so tender no need for a knife. Prep and presentation excellent! My wife ordered sliced pork... wonderful. The restaurant is reasonably quiet and the ambiance is comfortable like the interior of a British library! At night the restaurant is a bit hard to locate due to the absence of a lit sign, but we found it. Parking adjacent to restaurant. I wouldn't bring children, not for them. With Appetizers $9-15, Entrees $23-32, and Desserts $5-12 (but primarily $9), a 3 course meal at 80 Thoreau can easily add up to $50 pre-tax and tip. So $38 for a Dine Out Boston outing seemed a good deal. 80 Thoreau has a rather prime location in Concord, right by the Concord Stop on the Fitchburg Commuter Line, in the center of a private lot for its complex, as well as metered parking that shuts off at 6pm. They are a nice rustic space set up on the second floor, up either a flight of stairs or via the elevator by their individual accessible bathroom. Free coat check is available by the hostess station, and service was provided by pleasant waiters who walked my DC towards the bathroom, and scraped crumbs from the tablecloth. Napkins would also be mysteriously refolded upon our return to our seats. The night of our visit, an additional option was available for each course of the Restaurant Week menu. My DC and I both stuck with our first choice off the posted menu for our first course: Chicken Liver Mousse Sherry, dried fruits, seeded toast A generous portion of creamy rich mousse was provided in a short glass canning jar along with two triangles of hearty well toasted bread, and a scoop of mildly sweet reconstituted dried fruits. This was a rather filling start to our dinner. For our main entree, we were tempted by the day's offering of duck confit, and so decided to share both the duck and the Saffron Risotto Cake (Braised lamb, ricotta, broccoli rabe). We did well with our choices, as the duck with its crisp skin and tender moist well flavored meat may well have been the best duck I've had in my life. The lamb was tasty as well and I enjoyed the contrast of the crisped risotto alongside. We opted to also share the two offered RW desserts, though I was tempted by the day's special lemon panna cotta till I found out that theirs were the firmer type rather the melty sort that I prefer. Frozen Milk Chocolate Parfait Peanut, banana, meringue Pear Toffee Cake Caramel, rum, currants The moist flavorful cake was the obvious winner in this case, though the chocolate dessert was smooth, cool, and tasty, and non-too-sweet as well. The presentation of the parfait didn't quite fit our understanding of the word "parfait," which also led to some initial disappointment right off the bat. FANTASTIC! Wow! I genuinely don't know where to start. Our whole dining experience from start to finish was delicious and friendly. One thing that stands out is the atmosphere. When you enter 80 Thoreau you are met with friendly staff and escorted to intimate dining experience. The room was full and yet we did not have to raise voices or lean in to be heard. The staff was clearly a team and everyone who walked by our table fixed a need we did not see ourselves. Our glasses were always full, any dish was removed to keep our table clear when it was not needed and yet we never felt rushed or like it was invasive. The team seamlessly met our needs and knew their stuff! Any questions we had were answered with knowledge and kindness. When we were recommended drinks it was something that enhanced our courses' flavors and matched the description of our taste preferences. The meal started off amazing with a roasted squash, burrata and hazelnut salad. It was light and delicious with the tangy dressing and thin sweet apple slices which made me realize I was in for a treat. What surprised me most about the dishes is that each part could stand on its own. Obviously when you order a cut of meat you are expecting it to taste fantastic but when carrots or squash pack a flavor that you wish you could eat every day it's surprising. Like other reviews have said the gnocchi melts in your mouth and the he truffle on top was an amazing experience. It is clear they find the best ingredients and make dishes that enhance the natural flavors. They don't cover up flavors with heavy sauces instead they add sauce to pull certain aspects out of the dish. Overall, I cannot day enough how much I enjoyed my experience. 80 Thoreau knows how to do dining well and they are setting standards for what fine dining can be. Everyone seemed comfortable and no one seemed out of place. There were people dressed to the nines and then there were more casual patrons with dark jeans and a nice blouse. It was a little confusing to enter the place as there were no signs or we just couldn't find it. The drinks were great however my only tiny complaint is that our old fashioned did not come with the large ice cubes and later found out we had to request it and pay extra.
