Started getting hungry for lunch after hitting a few shops in downtown Durango. Ken and Sue's came well reviewed in Yelp and was also recommended by local shop owners. We walked in right at high Noon and the entire place was already full. Luckily, there were seats at the gorgeous wooden bar. I had farm-fresh salad with prawns as well as a cup of their amazing tomato bisque and washed everything down with one of the best teas I've ever had called Earth (mix of herbs that help with digestion). This place came highly recommend and we were very disappointed in our meals. All of the sides were cold. The pork chops were over done and dry. My husband and I were in Durango for our anniversary to ride the train. We did a little research before heading down and decided to make reservations. When we arrived we were seated right away and everything was already for us at our table despite a full house, so we were pleasantly surprised. Our waitress was very energetic and enthusiastic and was very helpful in answering questions that we had about the menu. I ordered the cilantro crusted halibut and my husband had the filet mignon. Both were perfectly done and tasted absolutely amazing, for dessert we had the special of the day which was a lemon curd in a puff pastry with fruit and a lemon cream sauce which was to die for. Overall I couldn't find anything wrong with the service and couldn't have been happier to celebrate our anniversary there. read more

We had a great time there. The food was fresh and tasty, the staff professional and very friendly, the atmosphere very nice. I was there with my daughter and she absolutely loved the strawberry creme brulee. And so did I ! They even took a photo of us and printed it on a nice card that they handed to us before we left -- free of charge. Overall a really good experience, it didn't matter that we had to put our name down and walk around for 45 minutes : Durango is such a fun town to walk around :) Eventually the bill was not even that high (we didn't drink alcohol that night). read more

Covd has NOT been kind to Ken and Sue's. Have been a seasonal traveler to Durango for 8 yrs & this has always been the culinarily highlight of trip. This time Service was exceptional and bar was great. Calamari appetizer came out so cold you could taste congealed grease in first bite. Potstickers were lovely. Filet mignon was cooked perfectly but the sides were un-edible.. cold curdled scalloped potatoes with sun dried tomatoes so tough that we all took turns trying to slice them with steak knifes. The service was amazing for like the first minute...then they forgot about us. Caesar wasn't yellow, capers weren't too much. Champagne good price. Rigatoni was light and refreshing but priced at about $17and we literally got two and a half olives...literally(they are cut in halves). 6 pieces of shrimp and very light capers. Make a reservation! Got lucky with a cancellation the first time I went and was able to eat at the table, but sat at the bar the next night. The appetizers were great, one night I had the special (salmon I beleive) and the next night I ordered off the menu. This is the best fine dining or casual date night restaurant in downtown. The food is consistently excellent, as well as the service. Although pricey, it never disappoints. We made reservations for K&S and had a nice table. The hostess was awesome, our waiter was awesome and appetizer special, the fried local fresh okra was the best. I had a decent glass of wine for a fair price and we truly enjoyed the evening. The Cesar salad was ok but no anchovies. Our main dish was, however, was just very average. Our fresh trout was breaded in heavy corn chip crumbs and over cooked and was sitting on top of a heavy white flour rue with some vague hint of piñon, a few carrots and turnips. Such a heavy sauce and breading for such a delicate fish. I felt the chef was trying to hard to be "creative " and missed the mark. I was hoping for so much more. We went in with high hopes considering the rave reviews on Yelp. Our experience was merely okay, and we won't be going back the next time we're in Durango. Environment: While the place definitely has a classy vibe and great decor, the functionality is questionable. Our table for two was very small and positioned against a wall and very near two other tables, one behind (at the restaurant's window) and one to the left (near the entrance). The dining experience therefore wasn't particularly private and the section we were seated in somewhat claustrophobic. The table was also very small - barely enough table top real estate to accommodate entrees, beverages, and the various decorations/seasonings. Environment: 3/5 Service: Our server was the most positive part of the dining experience. She was very friendly and prompt on refills and taking our orders. Our meal also arrived quickly, so the kitchen and other wait staff were on their toes. Service: 5/5 My wife had the pistachio-crusted grouper with a sweet potato smash, sauteed spinach, and vanilla rum butter. In theory, this sounds great. In execution, it was everything but. It seemed like an attempt at making a dinner from a "Chopped" basket of random ingredients. The flavors didn't really work well together, the presentation was unattractive (and the fish seemed overdone). Worse, the grouper had an aftertaste reminiscent of mildewed cloth (we all know the smell: a floor cleaned with a mop that was never properly dried, or a damp washcloth left out for too long). She was unable to finish her meal. I had the rigatoni with sautéed shrimp, garlic butter, kalamata olives, basil and tomatoes topped with arugula and caper salad. You can't really mess up those ingredients, and I enjoyed my meal. However, the dish was was really nothing special. That said, I didn't encounter any of the edibility problems my wife did. One of the best nicer restaurants in the Four Corners region. We had the pork belly starter, tobacco onion gorgonzola salad, and the sliced pork medallions and the special (beef tip medallions). The food is amazing and the staff is really nice. They book up fast so make reservations or be ready to sit on the patio or the bar (if there's any room!). Traveling with someone that has already been to that town has some advantages. The BF had been to Durango before and had remembered a wonderful experience he had at a beautiful restaurant/bar, except he couldn't remember where. We opted to stroll down Main Street and see if he recognized a place and low and behold he glanced at the place and the menu and a light bulb went off, "this is it" he exclaimed. Perfect first dinner in Durango. I went in to see if I could get a table on short notice and to my surprise on a Saturday evening during prime dinner time only quoted a 15 minute wait. We decided to stroll and window shop and then come back for our table. The hostess led us through a dark wood restaurant and bar offering dim lighting and a romantic atmosphere, walking past the kitchen and out the door to a very sizable patio decorated with tents to hide from the hot sun and twinkle lights hanging from the tents continuing the wonderful ambiance. **This place served me one of the best martini's, a coconut lemon drop. This is perfection in every sip. Full of lemon coco-nutty goodness. Sign me up for 3 more, I may not be able to walk but walking is over rated anyway. The menu was more sizable than a thought with appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pasta's, and entrees. We wanted to try a few things so we opted to share a few things. Sesame Seared rare Tuna for the appetizer with pickled ginger, wasabi, and an oriental slaw. The tuna was cooked perfectly and although the dish is not inventive it was exactly what we wanted and executed nicely. Next we split a salad, baby mozzarella, diced tomato's, kalamata olives, arugula, pine nuts, homemade croutons and a basil Parmesan dressing. We both agreed this salad was completely over dressed, the dressing was delicious but my salad was sitting in a dish of dressing, not really appetizing. The salad could have used more arugula, after all it is titled a salad. Less mozzarella, there was a ton of cheese and I don't normally say that so trust me there was more than enough that two people didn't want to finish it. To finish off the night was had the Cilantro Crusted Halibut with sticky rice, baby bok choy with a Sake Hoisin sauce. If there was cilantro in the crust, you could have fooled me. No flavor of cilantro whatsoever. The Halibut was cooked heavenly, flaky fish with great sautéed baby bok choy, great vegetable to accompany the dish. By this time we were completely full and ready to head back so we opted to not complete our meal with dessert. I may have exploded if we did. Even though there were a couple flaws with our dishes, the food was delicious, service was good, and the location was perfect for our first night in Durango. If we came again I think Ken & Sue's would make the list for us to come to again. read more

Ya, unfortunately besides the service this place was horrible. We had both fish dishes (grouper and halibut) and NY steak. Both fish were way overcooked for starters. The halibut was encrusted in some kind of green breading which was completely unnecessary for halibut, and served with a disgusting "asian" sake-tamari sauce. The sauce was both extremely salty and a little sweet with that chemical "sweet rice" flavor you get from cheap sake. Grouper was less bad but again had a crust that was overdone. The flavor of the sweet potato accompanying the fish didn't pair well at all and the vanilla cream sauce (with fish! why did I order this?!?!) was just laughable. The steak was your typical budget NY steak with a fair amount of gristle. I'm usually ok with this since you get what you pay for but the steak, ordered medium-rare, was undercooked, and very rare in most parts. Still, it was probably the least bad part of the meal. Actually, that was probably the salad, since it had arugula and fresh mangos and avocados in it. On the other hand, the salad, being a shrimp salad, had the driest, most overcooked shrimp I'd ever had. read more

Ken & Sue's was a charming restaurant with delectable food. On one side of the room there's a rich looking antique bar that spans nearly the entire wall. Our meal started off with a complementary bread basket. The bread was warm and soft with a hint of salt. I ordered the pistachio encrusted grouper. It was perfectly done and served over a magnificent mashed sweet potato with steamed spinach alongside. The vanilla rum butter added just the right amount of moisture to the pistachio crust. My daughter ordered the Chinese chicken salad, which had wonderful flavor from the soy-ginger vinaigrette and mirin dressing. The extra crispy noodles added a nice texture. She also had the mildly spicy lettuce wraps which had a delicious sauce. The tomato soup had a perfectly balanced texture and the croûtons contributed a nice crunch. My son had salmon that melted in the mouth. The dinner portions were pretty generous. Our waiter was attentive and responsive to our needs. He was also very knowledgeable regarding the composition of the various dishes that we ordered. For dessert, we shared two orders of the molten chocolate cake with home made coconut ice cream, which was oh so yummy. Terrible experience from the beginning. We walked in at opening and were the first there (4 adults and one infant). Three workers were at the front, not one greeted us. Mind you this is a small restaurant, and other's came in, were greeted and seated. Finally, when nearing door to leave, we were asked if we had been helped. I asked her by who since she had been standing there the whole time. Fast forward to finally being seated, our waitress comes over and proceeds to wrap her mouth around my son's foot! She then takes out drink order and disappears, 15 minutes later she takes our appetizer order and before we can order dinner she walks away. We had to have someone else track her down. Not recommended on the service alone! Food was ok, but hard to get over the absolutely terrible service and experience from all in the staff. They try to come off classy, but it's quite a dump with service factored in. read more
