My dad had the 50's special platter and loved it. Yes, it was father's day so of course the wait was long, but they offer complimentary free coffee outside. I recommend to all. Horrible place. This was going to be my family's first time going and we left because we were so badly mistreated. The line was long and extended outside. I opened the door to go in and the line was huge. No one made an effort to let us in and we were told to close the door and wait outside. I was horrified at how rude the customers in line were. They also yelled to close the door and that the hostess told them to tell us. Spoke to the manager Spiro he was equally as rude. I am awaiting a call from the owner Barbara. The portions here are large, the food is very good, and it's decorated like a 1950's diner. Be prepared for a wait if you arrive after 8am on a weekend but it's worth waiting for. They only accept cash, but they now have an ATM machine if you only brought your credit card. read more

Great little Dinner! Was staying at the Marriott close by, had a look at their "breakfast buffet " and said no thanks! Was looking for a fast food breakfast and stumbled on to this little gem! This is a great place for corned beef hash -- but don't get me wrong, everything on the menu is tasty, prepared to order, and exactly as you order it. They will bend over backwards to get everything right for you. 50s has an all-American breakfast and lunch. We got a huge, delicious breakfast for about $10 each, and the pancakes were super fluffy and absorbed syrup like a sponge. I really appreciate that alongside all the classic diner fare you can get egg whites and turkey sausage (because some of the classics don't agree with me these days). There is often a line out the door so sometimes it is a long wait to get in, but the service is friendly and attentive. Yes, the food is usually decent and yes, I'm willing to wait outside in the rain or cold or blistering heat once or twice a year to get into this place, but this is probably one of the most over rated restaurants I've ever been to. It's not bad, but it's also just not AH-MAZING. There's nothing here (other than cliche and fake-vintage memorabilia) that you can't get at any other up scale or trendy brunch places that have more memorable food. The portions and the menu selection are big, but it's way too expensive for a breakfast place in Dedham. Plus, you pretty much always have to wait in a long queue to be seated (and they close at 3) and it's cash only, so if you're headed to the 50s Diner, go early and go flush. read more

The 50's Diner in Dedham is a great place to get lunch. That's right lunch. Iprefer going ot this place to get lunch not breakfast. Their breakfasts' are just ok. The food comes out very fast and it seems it is already prepared on the grill. My niece did get the chocolate chip pancakes and those looked really good. Unfortunatley I try to eat healthy so I stay way from that dish. 50s Diner has some of the best milkshakes around. Only order one because you can easily split it between 2 people. The black and white milkshake is their best one. However, I go for lunch. I love the turkey club and tuna melt. The sandwich feels home made and it served with Potato Chips. My wife loves the hamburger club. This diner is located right next to Legacy Place. So, if you go shopping there you should go eat at 50s diner. read more

I remember why I haven't eaten here in 15 years - I just wish I remembered before I went in. I went today because I had some time to waste while getting my tires changed. I got a pretty basic breakfast: mushroom and spinach omelet with swiss cheese well done. I also ordered oj and decaf coffee. The omelet came out and I took my first bite to be welcomed by canned mushrooms. Canned? Really? Why is there a line outside if they are using canned mushrooms? Then there was the spinach. There was one bite of spinach, uncooked mind you, in the middle. What place doesn't sautee their spinach before placing it into an omelet w/ their canned mushrooms? Then the home-fries. We think they may have been canned potatoes as well. Though I am not 100% sure of that I am 100% sure they were mush and had no flavor. I don't normally use salt but I did - on everything. I almost salted my obviously store bought (like sunbeam or something) barely toasted slathered in butter bread. The waitress didn't ask to fill my coffee cup until we were finished. Neither of us came anyway near finishing our meals. My husband found his meal to be as bad as mine. There are just so many better breakfast joint out there that use better and fresher ingredients that taste good. I am not happy I wasted $30 there this morning. read more

There is almost always a line at this place, especially on the weekends, but it's definately worth the wait. The staff does a good job of keeping the line moving so the line usually isn't as bad as it looks. The food is cheap and so good! The pancakes are huge! If you go here for breakfast, you definately won't need to eat again until dinner. Make sure you get a milkshake here too. We really like this place for breakfast. It opens early, which is good because it gets very busy on the weekends and you will have to wait in a long line out the door. The service is typical of a diner -- fast, efficient, no frills. But the food is above average. The omelets are big and fluffy with plenty of vegetables. The home fries are always fresh and white -- not brown, burnt, stale or greasy like many other places we've tried. And the french toast is delicious, with butter and powdered sugar. The only con is you have to pay in cash, so either bring some ahead of time or pay a $2 charge at the ATM beside the kitchen. Oh, and the water tastes like chlorine -- get juice instead!! read more

I'm new to Dedham, I'm new to the US actually and for as long as I can remember I've been watching movies in which, at some point, a scene comes up in one of these kind of diner's. When I moved here all I wanted to do is find a place like that and feel it, you know?! From the moment I walked in I felt at home! People were sooo nice and welcoming, decor was incredible, just like the name says, the fifties. I'm in my twenties but I'm an old soul and this place feels like it's made for me! Their bulkie rolls are just hamburger buns, "home fries" are just watery roasted potatoes, and the food is mediocre at best. Real disappointment. Apple pie was okay, but my partner ordered a milkshake (they dont have Oreo shakes, the best flavor, btw) and they gave her two full milkshakes with straws and whipped cream and everything and insisted that was one shake. The line was out the door when we got there, so we figured we were going to get a great meal and it would be well worth the wait. Not so. The nice girl who sat us (NOT our waitress) did give us some tips on the house specialties when we told her we hadn't eaten there before. My mom took one of the suggestions but asked our waitress for no butter on the french toast, and I got the classic club with grilled chicken. Mine was just average, but the chicken was a bit gristly. My mom's french toast was swimming in butter, so she wiped it off as best she could with napkins. Her scrambled eggs were not completely cooked--with a pool of runny egg on the top. She probably would have mentioned it right away, but a food runner dropped off our plates. My mom's meal also came with a bottomless cup of coffee. Not once did our waitress come back during the meal to check on us. My mom never complained about her meal, but did have to flag our waitress down to ask her for a first refill on her coffee. Next thing we know, the waitress puts the check down on the table... doesn't bother to ask us if we want anything else. So if it were up to her, she didn't have to visit our table between taking our order and dropping off the check. The place was busy, and I would have assumed she was having a lousy day, except that she was very friendly to the people next to us (sharing our long booth table) and visited their table several times during their meal. Overhearing their conversation, it sounded like they're regulars. So is that what you need to do to get decent service at the 50's diner? Go there often? How do they get first-timers to ever come back? I'm sorry we left any tip at all. The mediocre/lousy food is way overpriced, the wait service is horrible... and all of that comes with a wait that is so beyond not worth it. I can't see ever going back to the 50s diner. I turned my nose up at IHOP before suggesting we give this place a try, and that was a mistake. read more

Very disappointing! I specifically asked how the omelettes were prepared on the flat top grill or in a pan! I was told the pan but it sure didn't look that way. A good omelette is in the pan with ingredients incorporated into the egg. It was just cooked egg with a pile of half cooked veggies thrown on with the egg folded over.
