Oh how the mighty have fallen. I used to come here several times a month around 8 years ago and they were THE spot to go for good bbq. Over the years I've periodically stopped by and the quality has slowly been going down to mediocre levels. Always willing to give them a second chance, I figured I would come here for my birthday dinner. Last night though was a whole new low. I typically don't take the time to write negative reviews since most of the time it can usually be chalked up to an off day but these guys struck out on just about every area possible. This goes beyond and off day, it's a clear reflection of management and how the restaurant is run regularly. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by pretty rude staff and demanded to move out of the way of the door. It's not the customer's fault that their set up makes you both order and pay right at the entrance so it doesn't take a big group to block the entry since it takes time to order and pay. Once the place gets busy there's no clear path that customers should follow so it makes entering and exiting awkward as you try to squeeze past people. We ordered a plate which consisted of the saddest, most unevenly cut, and driest piece of brisket I've seen. That's not an exaggeration. It was one step away from jerky. No amount of sauce could save it. The "creamed" corn was really just corn soup, which was disappointing. The Mac and cheese was overly seasoned with pepper, however, the creamy texture was there. The fries were pretty sad, probably cooked in burnt oil and then over cooked on top of that. Their "toast" was nothing more than buttered bread, also a disappointment. I don't ask staff to redo an order often but this was an exception. The fact that they saw this food and we're ok with it being served tells me how little they care about the quality of food being served. The staff seemed inconvenienced that I was asking for some of the items to be redone, even though I only asked for new brisket and fries. The only two items out of the whole plate that were not edible. The "new" fries I got were a little better but it seemed like they were still using old, burnt oil so the taste didn't change. The second order of brisket was a fat laden piece, that while better than the dry jerky served earlier, was still somehow over cooked. Marbled brisket is great but this was straight up just fat. With all that being said, their chicken was still as good as I remember it. Probably could have been better chopped instead of sliced but that doesn't change the flavor which was good. The new upstairs takes care of the previous seating problem which was good to see. These two items, along with their sauces, were the only highlights of the night. But those things alone are not enough to save the restaurant. I can't overstate how disappointed I was in this visit. Seeing how good of a hidden gem this once was, it's sad to see a restaurant go down this way. To me, these changes are a direct reflection of how careless the management, cooks, and staff have gotten. They know what they are serving is garbage and are completely fine robbing people of their money and time. To top off an already pathetic excuse for bbq, I got food poisoning shortly after the visit. Not even joking. This place needs to either turn things around ASAP or be put out of their misery. read more

Let's get one thing straight- it can be pretty tacky when a restaurant names itself among the greatest by dubbing itself 5-star BBQ. But this restaurant is better than almost any other BBQ joint I've been to in UT. This company has consistently pulled it off for many years, and from the looks of it, it's just getting better. POSITIVES: I found their in-house sauces to be VERY impressive! (Both the House sauce and the sweet BBQ sauce). Even mixed together, they taste amazing. Their fries were well-prepared. Their meat was juicy and flavorful (compared to other places' extremely dry meats). Their pulled pork also tastes amazing, especially in their buns. The funeral potatoes are prepared in a rolled up, breaded, and fried form, and were TO DIE FOR. Never thought I'd love funeral potatoes more than in their vanilla fashion. Somehow, they pulled it off, and I find myself craving more. The place has been renovated and looks fantastic. The decor is superb, with walls nicely decorated and tables looking inviting and clean. It gives a cozy, country feel, and yet is quite casual and spacious. At first I thought it felt a little crammed, with the long lunch line standing next to tables. Then I discovered the upstairs dining area with a plethora of tables and seating. NEGATIVES: Just to be clear, this isn't so much of a complaint as it is simply mentioning that it didn't stand out quite as much as the other foods... but the potato salad and Mac n cheese were just decent. Not terrible, but again, simply OK. The price seems high, but the quality is pretty fantastic, so I'm ok with that. PRICE: about $14 per person, which comes with your choice of meat (chicken, brisket, pulled pork, turkey), 2 sides, and a drink. read more

I could say just come eat here and be impressed yourself. 5 star bbq lives up to its name. We were able to try a little of everything but once I tried the brisket that was it. Beautiful smoke ring and great texture. The chuck Anderson sandwich was brisket, pulled pork, and chicken. All great. The home cooked fries were awesome! Deep fried funeral potatoes should be a new staple everywhere. And then the fridge of sauces all delicious. Just get down here and get some quick delicious BBQ. I'm not nutty for BBQ because it's overpriced and leave you feeling heavy. 5 star bbq is delicious - I have had better meat and sides; however, their sauces are the best I've had. Really good bbq! We went here on a recommendation from a family member. The flavors are good, quality meats, and cooked well. They have a handful of bbq sauces to choose from plus ranch and fry sauce. The desserts are yummy too, brownies, chocolate pudding, banana pudding, and rice Krispy treats. Prices are medium/high. We got three drinks, three 2meat plates and paid close to $60. It's the kind of place you order then take your trays to some seats. Clean up after yourself. Bad take out experience. Mandatory 20% tip for to go orders, wasn't on the menu, didn't see tip until after payment went through. Poor customer service forcing a 20% tip for a pick up order, especially since when we got there and called the curbside number it just went to voicemail so no help there and then when we picked it up they missed 3 items. Luckily we looked and asked and had to convince the worker that they were missing before we got them. All that for a mandatory $23 tip. Food was pretty good except it was evident they gave us the worst cuts for the to go, turkey was all ends and skin. It is evident this is a family business, very inconsistent quality and service and prices raising consistently. Have been going to these guys for years but doubt I'll go back now. read more

5star BBQ is really a 5 stars restaurant! This place was recommended by a friend and since them. It's have become my favorite place to eat American barbecue. Don't be fooled by how small this place looks from the outside. It's seems so cozy by the inside. The service is great and they are really friendly. This quaint house turned business is very warm and inviting. For an hill country Texas boy, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and quantity of the dinner portions. And the service always so prompt i didn't even look for a place to sit and wait. My order was bagged and brought to me while I was still filling the to go drinks. The food was fresh evening prepared, not leftover lunch. The St Louis ribs had at least 1/4" smoke ring and an excellent bite that pulled off the bone as it it should. The pulled pork was shredded nicely and was tender and well seasoned and moist. The brisket also had a nice smoke ring and several burnt ends was a nice touch. All the sides were exceptional. The only difference was the beans and those little pork beans were absolutely delicious. I highly recommend the little place in Orem Utah. 3.5 stars overall. I'm tough on BBQ because I spent half of my military career in the South. Plenty of parking at 5 Star, but a tight squeeze inside for all the customers. My son and I had the sampler. Brisket, my BBQ measuring stick, was overdone. Sausage was meh. Corn bread was dry. Banana pudding, which they left out of my bag, was bland with only a tiny bit of banana. Beans were flavorful. The saving grace were the tender, fall-off-the-bone ribs (get the sweet sauce). We'd come back for those. 5 Star gets "5 stars" for the ribs, but the rest falls short. read more

Food decent but service is lazy children flirting with each other over cold bbq, true love. Curb side pick up? Nope you have to come in even when recommended not to when calling in. Food was cold and sloppily handled. Shame was a good place, the vid made this place lack bad. I lived in the south for a while- so im a picky BBQ princess. The BBQ fell into the age old Utah classic- dry AF. I shouldn't need sauce to eat brisket, but it was needed to get through the bone dry meat. Mac and cheese was good, but who messes up mac? I also got the peach cobbler and it was mushy and a gross texture. The service was pretty slow, but I think they're understaffed. Put a couple more people in the line and Id be happier. Cute location, good seating. Parking was a little bit of a tight squeeze. Overall- slightly edible food, slow service. read more

We came on a Saturday for dinner and it seems there just isn't enough employees working, because by the time we got through the line to pay and sit down and eat our food, it was already room temperature/lukewarm. Meh. The actual flavors of the meats were delicious, we loved the Mac and cheese and peach cobbler. Skip the bbq beans, they were mush. Cornbread was also bomb. Would actually be 5 stars if the food would have been hot. We also do question the cleanliness of the employees in the line preparing food. This is just an average BBQ joint. The meat is not super juicy and feels a little too smoked. Most of the portions I had were dry but worked well with the huge variety of sauces. You know it is top quality meat if you don't need sauces, the smoke and fat should come together to make the flavor fantastic on its own. I did not find this here. I was impressed with the side options, they were good sized portions (except the fried funeral potatoes) and very tasty. If you go, getting 2 sides is a good choice. I was not a fan of the meat sandwich w/ pork and will be ordering something else if I were to return. It was just a bit too dry that nothing could be contained onto the bun. Really good BBQ and though it doesn't look the most amazing on the outside, the inside is nice - especially if you go sit upstairs. I love the ribs. They fall right off the bone. And great BBQ sauce. Really, I love ordering the sampler and just sharing it around because then you get to try a bunch of different things, both meats and sides. If you look online, it says they have two sizes of samplers, but they really only have one. And if you need a little extra food to share around, I recommend an order of the nachos with the sauced meat. Mmmm. And so much of it! read more

All right we had to cut a star off because the service was so bad I had to go downstairs and see what was taking them after they direct is upstairs. When I went and looked they were trying to give our food to another table to had sent come and we hadn't seen anyone come upstairs. The brisket was cold when it came... So this spot is a little off the beaten path for me... but this bbq joint has my vote for best bbq in Utah. I used to be a fan of "other bbq" spots, but I find that growth and expansion have not been favorable for the consistency of the food which means (drumroll please) Five Star BBQ has slid into the #1 spot for me (Holly Smokes in Layton is a close second)! This place serves traditional Texas bbq and everything is smoked to perfection (brisket, ribs, chicken.... everything that comes off the smoker is spot on). They have corn bead & creamed corn & even Texas Toast, which is a huge plus for me since for some reason it's hard to find in Utah. The key to the success? They stick to what they know best.... If you're from Texas, you might be a little disappointed that it's not QUITE how it is at home, but I don't think you'll find a better one in Utah. If you do order it, definitely get it marbled--including the more fatty parts throughout makes it more juicy and tender (and I don't even usually like fat in meats at all!) The sides: -The mac & cheese is so flavorful!! It's rich and creamy and not overly cheesy. - I might start sounding redundant, but holy cow the beans are just bursting with flavor.
