I went in for a few drinks with a friend, we ordered two tap beers. I noticed there were dark things floating in the bottom of my glass so I told Candi, the bartender. In a very rude fashion she grabs the glass, dumps it in the sink refills another one and places it in front of me. No words. No smile just a pissed off look on her face. She continues acting like this until she wants us to close out the bill. Then shes nice and smiles at us after we have been sitting at the bar for over two hours. I tip her accordingly in which she whispers into the new bartender (coming on shift) ear whom glances at us several times rolling her eyes and giggling and keeps glancing over. Rude service, ridiculous. I have been in the restaurant industry for 23 years. Learn to leave your attitude at the door and do your job without looking angry at your customers. You would make so much more money. I might add she was very very kind to her regular customers that came and went. Be kind to the people in the community that want to support your business and not just your regulars. Update to Jill response: You are going to "apologize for my feelings if this is how I felt." This is not an apology Jill. An apology starts as "I am sorry for the service you received". No, do not apologize for my feelings. Thank you. And no thank you to your business that I do not see how is surviving. Learn how to apologize first and foremost. I did not include my friends response to service. My Daughter and I went here yesterday. We tried a variety of their food. She had the Saucy Sally. I had the Amablue Classic. We also ordered the Pickle Chips, Cheese Curds and the Ultimate JoJo's. Everything was perfect!! The burgers were fantastic! Juicy and flavorful. The French fries were the best that I've ever had! The JoJo's were loaded and great! I'm not a fan of cheese curds but my Daughter went nuts about them. I had never tried the pickle chips but they changed my mind. Loved them. The waitress was a cute younger woman. She was attentive but not hovering. Very nice young lady! This is a very comfortable, nice place. People were genuinely nice. Smiles and nodsThey have definitely got us hooked! Beware: A PORTION OF THE EMPLOYEES' wage will be added to your bill. You will be charged an additional percentage that allows the facility to afford employees. This charge is non-negotiable and you will be expected to pay it if you decide to eat there. I highly disagree with these antics-they're not my employees. Furthermore, if you're going to make me responsible for your employee's wage, make sure you provide me with an employee who wants to do her job. The service was bottom box. Our questions were met with eye rolls and dismissive remarks. The food was good, and the fried pickle chips were a healthy portion. The batter of the pickle chips was also very tasty. The onion rings were average but did pair nicely with the blue cheese dressing. What We Ordered - Onion Straws - Juicy Lucy with Pepper Jack Cheese and JoJos (Extra $1) - Doughboys How is this one of the two most well known places for a Juicy Lucy in Minnesota? :( My burger was overcooked and dry! Had to add ketchup and ranch on the burger for more flavor when I ran out of cheese. Luckily, my cousin's burger came out a perfect medium rare. However, he said he didn't have much cheese inside. The Doughboys were interesting. Not something I would order again. It was kind of like a cinnamon roll with chocolate syrup but, more dough and less flavor since there was nothing but just plain dough on the inside. Only thing good was the onion straws. Besides the fact it came in a huge, brick size pile, it was crispy and delicious! Not sure what the other reviews were talking about...food came out fairly quickly. The process for getting on the waiting list was a bit confusing and a bunch of us spent a long time jammed up against the door wondering what was going on.... But the food was pretty darn good! Definitely check out the Juicy Lucy- don't mess around with the basic burger, go for the top of the line. Plus- the bacon was hella crispy! The waitress was nice and on top of things. Seems to have slipped from what it used to be. Service was fine and the server was friendly. They used to have daily specials including a basic Jucy Lucy with fries on Monday, for about $8 instead of the usual $12, and dinner specials like roast turkey with mashed potatoes and corn, or meatloaf with mashed potatoes and vegetable most of the rest of the week. Those all appear to be gone now. When I asked about the Juicy Lucy special on Monday I was told it was still there so I ordered it. When the burger and fries arrived, there were two burgers instead of one on the plate. I asked the server about it and she said that was "the special" - for $16 - instead of $8, or even $12! No mention of this on the menu or when I ordered. I was hungry and did not want to wait for them to make something different so I asked for a box and paid for it. Not the fault of the server, or the kitchen I do not think. But this is not how to run a business that serves its customers. The atmosphere has gradually shifted over the last decade as well. It used to be more of a local bar/restaurant where clientele enjoyed themselves, but were usually respectful. There were more people in the restaurant side. Perhaps Covid changed that. Ok the sensitive subject of who's burger is the original and whose taste better. What I can only share is how my taste buds felt. I've actually been here more than a few times eating the juicy lucy so here it goes: We had the classic many times with different variations of add ons and I will say the burger was good but not great. The cheese didn't ooze out like Matt's bar, this was agreed upon by three other friends. Basically to sum it up, burgers is basic and ok, if you are craving and you are nearby the location, go for it! Fries were nothing special, so basic that I just ate a few. Cole slaw was ok it was just a pinch on the side. Broasted chicken, oh man the juicy of all Juiciness. Almost steals the thunder of the name juicy up in this restaurant. It take a good 20 mins to arrive at your table, so wait patiently. The skin is absolutely thin, light, crispy skin. The meat was so juicy and delicious! The GCB, plain simple burger with garlic toast bread, I wanted to try something different. It was ok, I'd definitely order the bread on its own on the side, very garlicky and soft. Cheese curds were very good, very thin light batter and cheesy! Please pass on the doughboys (beignets), it's a Chinese doughnut with cinnamon sugar on the outside. Not good. On a Friday night, it was busy between 630-7pm, after 7pm it cleared up with no wait. Good service! read more

Is it just me, or am I the only one underwhelmed by the Juicy Lucys here? The meat isn't that hot, the buns have cold spots, and I have never been at risk of burning my mouth with hot bubbly cheese. I had the original with american cheese just over a year ago, and tonight I tried the pepperjack filled one with bleu cheese crumbles on top. The cheese was melted at least, with a layer of pickles on the bottom. Burger was decently juicy. That aside, the onion rings are great, as are the fries and jo-jos. The price is solid for what you get, which is a lot of food. Huge selection on the menu, this is definitely not a one trick pony. Service is great, and atmosphere is like others have said, not hole-in-the-wall, but typical of a place in the 'burbs. Nice quiet dining area on the right with a bar side on the left. On my second trip to the 5-8 Club in Brooklyn Park I had the exact same experience that I did the first time. The single bartender/server was extremely nice and knowledgeable, and service was fast. I always love a basic Juicy Lucy and this burger was wonderful both times! I tried it with American cheese the first time and Swiss the second and liked them both. I think I'm an American kind of girl but recommend either! I also asked for lettuce and tomato on the side and made it a California style. read more

Terrible experience today. We are longtime customers and have always sat at a booth in the bar. The only available booths were not cleaned so we sat at the cleanest to wait for it to be cleaned. The waitress/bartender came over and angrily told us we shouldn't have sat at a dirty table. We said we were leaving and she just glared at us. We won't return. In the last few months this location as become increasingly less appealing. Service is slow and the cooks must move even slower. In our most recent trip food took just shy of 40 minutes and one full meal was completely wrong- as if the waitress just grabbed someone else's meal. Then we wait again for the correct meal to be made with no apologies. Generally we go eat at the maplewood location which is always busy and feels old and kind of dirty. The kitchen here is ALWAYS slow, but on our most recent visit, it took an hour to get a couple burgers, a sandwich, and a quesadilla. We were never notified that the kitchen was backed up until we enquired about the status of our order after 40 minutes. Had we known the kitchen was short & there was a back up from a catering order, we could've made an informed decision on whether we wanted to stay. Ultimately, after we finally got our relatively simple orders, they did comp some of the food, which is why I gave them 2 stars instead of 1. The 5-8 Grill and Bar has shady business practices. I went to dinner there with my fiancé. The burger that I ordered did not have any sauce on it despite the fact that the menu said it would. I let the server know about the mistake. She brought me the sauce. However, when I got the bill I saw that she tried to charge me for the sauce that the kitchen forgot to add in the first place. I was able to get them to remove this erroneous charge. I, however, also noticed a service charge had been tacked on to the bill. It turns out you had better go through the entire menu extremely carefully. On the front page in very tiny print they disclose that they are going to charge a 3% service fee to help with "retention". Don't nickel and dime customers. If it costs more to run the business then increase the prices. Don't surprise customers with hidden fees. Also, if the owner actually cared about his employees he might actually try listening to them. I highly doubt that he is passing along this extra income to them, especially since I heard from the employees that the owner doesn't listen to the employees. No wonder there are employee retention issues. Needless to say, I do not patronize businesses with service surcharges like 5-8 added, and I will not be returning. What a shame. read more
