It was Sunday, January 17th, a little after 12:45pm. *Coffee and a doughnut ($5): Mango & passionfruit doughnut *Hot chocolate & doughnut ($6.50): classic dark hot chocolate & Cinnamon sugar doughnut I love the coffee here. Dark and strong. I love black coffee, so this was my kind of cup. I'm not a huge fan of hot chocolate, but I took a sip of the roommate's and thought it was pretty good. Nice rich, dark, chocolate flavors. They serve Lucky's doughnuts here. They have another location, but since I wanted coffee, we came here instead. I got the mango & passionfruit, which I thought was okay. A tad too sweet for me with both the filling and the glaze on top. The roommate's doughnut was good. Reminiscent of a churro. I'd seen all these specialty flavors through Lucky's social media feeds, so I was a little disappointed with their selection. This is now one of my 'go-to's' for that caffiene fix I occasionally need. You have probably seen their beans sold in more niche like grocery stores but to get the true feel of this coffee brand, come here and fight through the 'hipsters' to get your brew. On any given day, and given time, this place is packed with everyone from a suit, to the locals living around here, to the hipsters with their silver macbooks sitting at a table or sharing on the communal table. This place gets busy..... and rightfully so. Lucky's donuts are in here, but I'll save that for another review, just know that you can have coffee and donuts together in one location, the best of both worlds I guess. Back to the place, it's pretty big in here, with many tables, and in the summer the North facing wall windows open up, as they are big glass garage doors to reveal the patio area. The place is covered in wood, from the floors, the tables, the counters, the ceiling, it's a very comfy feel, and with the coffee brewing in the air how are you not having one when you are in here? The coffee here is solid, smooth, something that is definitely above that of the commercial branded stuff that is out in our city now (Starbucks, Artigiano, etc.) it is, in a better word to say... a fine brew indeed. From your regular pot brew, to your americano's and drips, they have it here and after you have this, it's hard to go back to the commercial stuff. The service is always quick and friendly cause they know why your here, intially, to get that shot of caffeine, how long you stay here after the fact though is another question. Sometimes I come here, and I'm right at the cashier already ordering, sometimes I look back and I wonder how that line up just grew. There seems to be a following now with people liking to come here, and it can be busy any part of the day. I don't usually stay here and drink, but when I do, it's pretty comfy no matter how many people are looming around. Great place to hang out with friends & chat or do a little studying. The coffee is good but most people come here for Lucky's donut. The different varieties and flavours allow for you to find a donut that suits you. I love the PBJ and matcha donut. It gets very busy here so finding a seat can be hard. There's a long table that has swing out seats so it fits 16 ppl. There's also outside seating for when its sunny in Vancouver. The WiFi is a hit and miss. You can connect to their WiFi but when trying to connect to the internet, you may not be able to. I tried with my phone & tablet and neither was able to connect to the internet. Always times out. So if you plan to surf the net, expect some times of none. Its probably because there's so many people here that its too busy and handle all the connections. I love 49th parallel coffee and Lucky's doughnuts as much as the next person, but I usually stick to the 4th Ave location. This was my first time at the Main St location and I can't say I'll be back. Coffee wise, it's great as usual. But the customer service at this location really turned me off. I came here to treat my family visiting from out of town and ordered a latte and 3 donuts. We picked a table to sit down at while we waited. When the barista gave me the donuts, I asked for a few extra forks and knives so we could all share the donuts. Some barista with a beard from the back came out and rudely said "Is all of that for here?" and rolled his eyes. Frankly, I just felt very uncomfortable and unwanted as a customer here. I'm not really sure what the problem is with asking for some forks to share the donuts. I paid for the items! Sorry 49th; this location won't be getting my business any time soon. read more

I've been to this location a few times when I happen to be nearby, and it's always extremely busy, to the point where it's hard to find a seat. The U-shaped layout of the place is also a little awkward, especially if you can't find a seat near the serving counter and end up on the other side of the shop where you can't see. I've had mochas and dark hot chocolates here, and they're all decent, though not good enough that I actively try to come here. That being said, the pastries are really quite nice - I recently had a chocolate old fashioned donut, which is a cake donut instead of a yeast one, and really liked it. Overall, this is a perfectly fine place to grab something quick, probably better if you're getting to go. Not somewhere I'd go if I wanted to sit down and chat or work, though, and not good enough that I'd go out of my way to return. read more

My biggest mistake? Not having coffee. It's a coffee place for goodness sakes! But I opted for tea because it was cold.. &Now I'm miles and months away from trying this gorgeous cafe again. HOWEVER, their tea did not disappoint. Neither did their delicious baked counterparts-- Lucky's Donuts! (Which are appealing to both eyes & tastebuds alike) 49th stole my heart from their earl grey latte to their Lucky's French crueller. This is not my first time here. Been here couple times. So I came just recently for the Hot Chocolate festival. So I ordered the "ONE FLEW OVER THE COCONUTS". It was not bad. The drink came with a pastry for $7. The pastry was interesting. In the past, I usually come for latte or tea. Its a great place to meet up with friends. Not to be confused with Parallel 49 Brewing, this place is about as hipster and feel-good as it gets. Parking is available in the back (4 spots), as well as the side streets behind the building. The interior is brightly lit because of all the windows. The only downside to this is that the place bakes in the afternoon. The staff were professional, and all seemed to be having a good time. Things are a little bit pricey (coffee and donut are $4 or so), but they definitely feel good. The place is very quaint. During my short stay in Vancouver, I think this had to be my favorite coffee shop. The shop is HUGE - lots of space to lounge, sit and enjoy your coffee and pastries. I like how the right side of the shop was a cozier nook for lounging (the side closer to the bathrooms), while the left side of the restaurant had longer tables (perfect for larger groups like ours) and was closer to the ordering station. There was a constant stream of people in and out of the shop during our visit, but the line moved quickly. So, by the time we got to the front, there wasn't enough time for me to really peruse the donut selection and decide on a flavor. I ended up going through the line once and ordering coffee, then standing in line a second time in hopes of studying the donut flavors a little more carefully. I read great things about Lucky's Doughnuts, so I really wanted to try one. One of our group members got a donut, but I didn't end up getting one during this trip. I really would have wanted to try the square-shaped peanut butter donut, but I don't like jelly (and it has a jelly filling), so I decided to pass. If you're looking for great coffee and sweet pastries, check out this spot. There's a tiny parking lot immediately in back of the shop with 2-3 stalls; otherwise, it's street parking. Here's what we got: Coffee of the Day: During our visit, the coffee of the day was called Guatemala San Juan. It featured a plush texture and chamomile aroma with flavors of apple and cashew. One of our group members ordered this coffee and really liked it; he enjoyed the fragrance and the slight hints of the apple and cashews. This was an interesting combo that I wouldn't have expected (for coffee, anyway), but it was a hit within our group. Lemon Meringue Bismarck: This was the one donut we got, since we had just come from breakfast. But our group member who ordered this likes lemon meringue pie, so he was really happy with this flavor. It featured a perfectly torched meringue topping, as well as a lemon curd filling (at least, that's what it looked like to me). This is a great option if you want to try one of the donuts but aren't super into sweets; because of the lemon flavor, this pastry is more tart. Venezuelan Coffee: At first, I was going to stick with my usual coffee order (some type of mocha or latte with soy). But I asked about this Venezuelan coffee (I had also seen photos of it and was curious), and I'm so glad I ordered this instead. It features caramel inside the latte-like drink, as well as the coffee shop's homemade almond milk. It tasted so good - I like sweeter coffees, so this was right up my alley. I loved that I could aptly taste the caramel flavor, and the almond milk was smooth and divine. Plus, the latte art was amazing - usually, the latte art in my drinks isn't that great because I get soy milk, but the design on this was still picturesque. Great taste and flavor; I'd definitely order it again. Cinnamon Sugar Old Fashioned: Now and then, I crave old fashioned donuts because of their texture (not as smooth, dense or heavy as the yeast options). Because this one is covered liberally in cinnamon sugar, it's one I would want to try one day. I love cinnamon, and this donut reminded me of Cinnamon Toast Crunch ... but in donut form. This was one of the plainer donuts in the display case, but sometimes, simple is best. Coffee and Donut Combo: If I were eating here, this is what I would have ordered. It features a 12 oz. coffee of the day paired with any donut of your choice. For $5, that was a deal, as donuts are around $3.50-4 alone. read more

Well, it's about time I write a review on 49th Parallel. It's by far one of my most favourite coffee shops in Vancouver. Why? 1) Their coffee, of course. It's flavourful, strong, and exactly my cup of brew. They also serve their drinks in a mint-turqouise blue mug/cup, which I think is just a pretty touch. I get excited when I go to another restaurant and see that they're serving 49th Parallel, because it's just that good (also cheers for supporting local businesses). 2) They serve Lucky's Donuts. Big, fluffy, delicious, baked goodness. It's the perfect pair to soak up all that liquid caffeine. They have numerous flavours as well as different features. 3) Unlike many other coffee shops in Vancouver, 49th has tons of space to work from, including a large patio perfect for summer hang outs. They also have a fireplace and large, cozy chairs right next to it, perfect for cooler fall/winter days. 49th Parallel is insta-worthy for a reason: their space is beautiful, the donuts are pretty (and yummy) and the coffee is well-made. 2020 9 7 49 was/is used to do pretty well. Thanks for their efforts since pandemic. However, very embarrassing this morning. I ordered latte as usual , but it was not latte. Taste, shape and texture was quite different. Taste like a rotten mop washed. A cloudy mess unknown shape. I showed and asked to change it. The staff who I met said "This is latte! ... and another will be the same. (so...I don't want to change it. You better keep drinking yours)! " Silence between her and me....... Do yourself a big favor and get one of those pumpkin Bismarck donuts. We also liked the chocolate croissant, but have also had better. Probably next time we'll settle on two of their donuts instead. Otherwise, our tea was good. I have no idea why hot water always comes out so hot. Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble: This was my favorite summer doughnut. The filling was fruity, and had a good balance of sweet and tart which paired really nicely with the sweet icing and the sweet crunchy crumble on top. (5/5) Cold Brew Cruller: This was surprisingly delicious! I don't normally go for cake doughnuts because I prefer fluffier doughnuts and I find cake doughnuts quite greasy. I've come here a few times for the hot chocolate fest and for their doughnuts! Not much of a coffee drinker so can't comment on that. The flavours for the hot chocolate fest are always unique yet simple. This year, I tried the Bees Knees which was a lavender infused hot chocolate and the Malted Milk Hot Chocolate. Both were very good. The Bees Knees has a strong lavender taste but it's perfect for me since I love lavender! I like the doughnuts available here too. I fell a bit in love with this place during my short visit in Vancouver! Laid-back atmosphere and possibly the best ice latte I've ever had; a shakerato with cashew milk, cardamom and vanilla. YUM! The baked goods looked amazing, but unfortunately they didn't have anything allergy friendly. That's of course a minus - but the shakerato was seriously so good that I'll forgive them for their lack in pastry! This is one of those Vancouver institutions that seems to be on everyone's list of recommended coffee spots. Since the book has pretty much been written, I will only highlight that if you buy a coffee or a tea, you can get a doughnut for an additional $1.50 (that's half off, or more, of what you would pay if you bought the doughnut a la carte at regular price). It's an ideal way to experience their myriad Lucky's Donuts offerings. This is my personal preference talking, but I was there at around 6pm, and sampled a plain vanilla cake donut. I found the texture to be somewhat dry and crumbly, perhaps because of the later hour, and the likelihood that it had been made earlier in the day. Next time I would opt for one of their yeast-based flavors, or the sourdoughnut, which seem to hold up in the case better. read more

Yeah this location is busy, but there's a damn good reason why. 49th is one of the best coffee places in Vancouver, if not the best. There's a lot of seating inside and the space is quite large. Because of this it's always packed. Small tables, booths, and a giant communal table on the south end of the place make for plenty of places to sit. Window seating is nice if you want to watch people on the street. So what else can I say other than the coffee here is phenomenal. Single origins, blends and other drinks can be ordered. The have a wall where you can pick up goods and the front counter has bags to grab if you are in a rush. This location also has food options. I didn't try any but I'm sure I'll get a donut sometime in the future. The staff is super professional and pretty nice. This place is super busy but they do a great job. read more

One of my favourite spots for coffee in Vancouver. My go-to drink is the Venezuelan Coffee but I also like the London Fog. I always seem to end to here on my days off. Also can't resist the doughnuts. They are absolutely delicious. Really like them better than Voodoo Doughnuts and Cartems. If you are there at the right time, you may be able to snag some of their pastries.. especially the chocolate croissant. They often have seasonal donuts which are nothing short of delicious also. They took what was an old run down laundromat and turned it into a comfortable, spacious brand spanking new cafe. This one is way better (for atmosphere, at least) than the one on 4th. I remember going there and never making my way back. Not here, tho. Love the atmosphere, lucky donuts, fast lines and friendly baristas. Love that Cole, the aptly named hipster barista let me take his picture and promised better latte art next time. Love the open space that I didn't get to enjoy because it was packed. Loved that his fellow coffee "jerk" smiled for the photo, too, even if I didn't catch his name. Do not love the 1% milk; sorry. I'm not usually inclined to grab a donut. I'm a muffin girl. It's a known fact. But there are a few places that make me change my muffin ways and this little den of waistline sin is one of them. Gimme gimme gimme! Luckys donuts - you are a tiny slice of heaven in circular form. First time I had one, I found myself in one of those awkward moments when you're SO content that you're making inappropriate sounds whilst eating and realize the three tables next to you are all openingly staring. I've toned it down a lot since my first visit but gosh darnit, I love me some Luckys. The ambiance is good and I want to high five whoever sets the lighting in this spot. It's that nice balance between workably bright but not overpowering and they've obviously paid attention to making the room feel hip and welcoming. Service is fast. Coffee is good. I wish I KNEW a little bit more about the coffee. I like that they have a fresh sheet with pick your bean, small batch whatnot but i'm still a coffee newbie and always feel a little intimidated asking the newbie questions in a joint like this. Maybe if I catch them on a slower day, i'll strap on my big girl heels and speak up a little more but until then - i'm pretty darn happy with what I get espresso wise... even if I don't quite understand it.
