The coziest little spot. Delicious hot chocolate & coffee. The perfect spot to relax, get some work done or read. I decided to explore downtown Raleigh & my friend recommended this spot. It did not disappoint. I spent hours here at peace reading a new book & sipping on drinks.

We stopped in for some morning fuel. The location is clean and inviting. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We ordered one of the specials, the S'mores latte. It was delicious. The croissants were flaky and quite tasty. Overall I'd definitely recommend a stop in.

3.5 I never pass up a chance to get a lavender latte so I got one iced. It was okay. There was a subtle hint of lavender and the rest tasted a lot more like milk than coffee. What I liked more was the ambiance. It's a relatively small space with a lot of people coming in and out but I stayed a little bit to work. There are tables and high tops and the Wi-Fi was pretty strong. They also had outlets where I was sitting so it was great to just get some work done while I was waiting for a conference to start.

Amazing coffee, the signature lattes and drinks are what sets this place apart. The Taj Mahal is one of the best drinks I have ever had. Great vibes on the inside, people both working and just hanging out. Staff is very friendly and know their stuff - every drink has been great.

Friendly staff, delicious tea and coffee, and decent prices! Great location too. The inside was quiet and clean. My peach tea was the perfect sweetness and so flavorful!

A busy coffee shop in downtown Raleigh across from Moore Square. It took me about 30 minutes to take this picture of the counter since it was so busy. I ordered a hot mocha and it was creamy and sweet. I like the ambiance of the coffee shop, but beware, there is very little seating.

Great coffee shop downtown Raleigh and in a great location. Good amount of seating inside and some outdoor seating and lots of natural light coming in from the many windows to enjoy your drink and people watch. Overall a quiet place to get some work done or just hang out. They have a nice selection wines, coffees and teas here, so whatever you are in the mood for and the customer service is always very good.

(4.5 stars) Named for a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference (and for local roaster Larry Larson), it is perhaps somewhat fitting that this gem of a coffee shop has become our annual post-GalaxyCon caffeinate-and-cool off destination. While it boasts a sleek modern ambiance and welcoming staff, the biggest draw can be summed up in two words: coffee flights. With options including nitro cold brews, draft lattes, and more, this is a great way to sample a bit of everything and still get your caffeine fix. They are my wife's go-to order while I usually opt for one of the seasonal drinks. The orange creamsicle I tried during our most recent visit isn't something I would repeat, but I do credit them for trying out a variety of syrups and flavors. There are plenty of coffee shops in Downtown Raleigh, but if you can abide by the limited seating, 42 and Lawrence offers all the strong coffee, inventive flavorings, and charm that you need.

my dad lives in nc so i went to visit him during january and tried this place. i think it's the beet cafe in nc, i tried a lot of other places too but the only one that stood out to me was 42 & lawrence. very good drinks, owner is nice as well

This is still my to-go spot for a nice cup of coffee or tea in downtown Raleigh. Seasonal menu always has something new, it's definitely my favorite part. I just tried iced strawberry matcha latte and I'm obsessed! Lovely non-sweet matcha flavor blends so well with strawberry sweetness, yum. Definitely would order it again!

Had a hard time finding 42 and Lawrence but was pleasantly surprised once inside! Interior is modern and harsh looking with minimal seating, doesn't have the warm, cozy coffee shop vibe I usually seek which is why I docked one star. Also had free WiFi. Service was great, drinks were brought to our table and they even warmed up the cinnamon roll we ordered. Most importantly, the drinks and cinnamon roll were great! Americano was bold and flavorful. Seasonal autumn breeze latte had notes of gingerbread and cinnamon. The unexpected highlight was the cinnamon roll-- didn't look like a conventional cinnamon roll but tasted amazing heated up.

    Hot Matcha Latte.

I overheard another customer after her order state this was the best Matcha she ever had. I never had a Matcha Latte but I had to give it a try after such a bold statement. Now I'm hooked. They are great!

Yummy coffee shop in Raleigh!! I got their iced latte which had three shots of espresso with two pumps of caramel. It was ~4.75, which seemed like a pretty reasonable price to me. I also had a cinnamon roll warmed up and it was super tasty!! It was kind of flaky like a croissant and the glaze was very yummy. The service was great, definitely recommend!!

It was well made. So much so I had two! For food, these are shareable small plates. Morning truly felt like a meal. The food came out fast and was hot/fresh. I had the crab claws, crispy shrimp and dumplings. The crab claws were delicious. Lots of them too. Served with bread I didn't use. The crispy shrimp were nice large shrimp and a spicy sauce with rice. I ended up using the rice with the crab claw sauce. And the dumplings were ok but I didn't eat many of them. They were my least favorite. I would come back to enjoy coffee and breakfast, but doubt I come back for dinner.

All this is child's play compared to the drinks. I was hoping they would redeem the experience. I was rooting for you, iris coffee lab. The matcha left me wanting more. I couldn't taste even a whisper of matcha flavoring, and the price was laughable for a glass of green milk. When my flat white arrived, I felt that twinkle return to my eye. After a lot of contemplation, I have decided I am not a fan of coffee grounds swirling around my mouth. The customers are hip and trendy, the employees exceedingly friendly and speedy, the drinks bespoke and innovative, but I think we need to cut out the frills and go back to the basics. I'm a big fan of lighter-roasted, funky, expressive coffees, and Black & White absolutely delivers. Their roasting style leans into vibrant, fruit-forward profiles, and they do it with confidence. The downtown Raleigh location is fantastic too. It's right in the middle of everything, making it a great stop for a date night, meeting up with friends, or just dropping in for a quick but exceptional cup. Their seasonal menu was small but mighty -- just a couple of options -- but the kind where every drink looks so good you wish they'd never rotate them off the menu. I started with the orange cardamom flat white, and it was perfect in every way. Beautifully presented and incredibly balanced. The espresso, milk, orange, and cardamom all complemented each other without any one flavor taking over. It was nuanced, aromatic, and just a joy to drink. For my second drink, I ordered a Rodrigo Sanchez pour-over, a co-fermented Colombian coffee labeled with passion fruit notes. It was everything I want from a pour-over -- bright, juicy, and expressive, with the kind of sweet stone fruit and berry notes that make light-roasted coffee so exciting. Black & White continues to prove why they're one of the most respected specialty roasters around. If you love adventurous coffee with huge flavor and careful execution, this place is an absolute must-visit.
