Stopped by here on a weekend afternoon recently and enjoyed my drink. My wife grabbed a decaf latte while I got a matcha latte. The quality of both was pretty darn high! I was happy to see Java Jive open on Christmas Eve other than Starbucks and the coffee was good. When I first walked in, I noticed it was very quiet that people come to do work here so it was a relaxing atmosphere. They not only serve coffee, but they serve milk tea drinks as well, which became hard for me to choose what I wanted lol. I ended up going with the toasted marshmallow iced latte which I don't remember if it was seasonal or not but the flavor was good. It almost reminded me of fruity pebble cereal. It is a small coffee shop located in Lochmere pavilion along with numerous other shops. Ample parking is available. A few customers were inside dining and waiting for their orders when I arrived. I briefly viewed the menu and display case before ordering. An employee welcomed me and took my order of chocolate chip banana bread and iced matcha latte made with oat milk. My order was accurate and ready quickly. I enjoyed both items, especially the banana bread. The matcha latte was lukewarm with ice in it. I came back after my bad experience 9 years prior. The service today was excellent. There is still a very hard to see sign that says all card payments have a 3% processing fee which I think should be more upfront and transparent, but my coffee was good and I like supporting local businesses. read more

This place was a pleasant surprise! I needed somewhere to work for a bit on the weekend and I'll definitely have to add this to my favorites. The ginger honey tea won me over first. It was very refreshing and had a strong ginger presence (but not too much). Real ginger chunks and all! I inquired if it was sold in a packaged form, but sadly it's not. The bacon, egg, and cheese English muffin was also a surprise. I wasn't planning to order food, but I'm glad that I did. It was flavorful and just enough but not too heavy for breakfast. Summary: So many pros- friendly staff, great service, & comfortable setting- but drink was just okay. I'm hoping they improve the flavor of their drinks so I can return. Pros: Friendly staff & comfy place- I appreciated how one of the baristas walked over to people's tables and handed them their drinks. They had a comment box with a sign beside it asking for feedback on how to make their place more comfortable and sharing how much they appreciated their customers. They've tried to make the interior a cozy place conducive to hanging out or working, and I was charmed by their Halloween spirit. All the staff is vaccinated and masking properly- an amazing plus. A customer left a belonging, and the staff made sure to keep it safe until she returned. Cons: My milk tea was just okay. I can't comment on the quality of their boba because I didn't get pearls this time. In the Triangle, there are so many options for great coffee and boba that there is no reason to revisit a place with merely passable beverages. I think their actual drinks menu is solid, but if the milk tea was any indication, they may need to work on the presentation and flavor of their offerings as a whole. I also wish they had recycling and offered a discount ($0.10) if you bring your own straw, just to incentivize people to try to reduce straw waste, but I didn't take stars off for that. I took stars off for drink quality because that's what I look for in a coffee shop. They seemed to have decent traffic, and I have a feeling that they're going to expand. If they can improve the flavor and presentation of their beverages, I would be happy to try them again. I like it when small businesses thrive, and I'm rooting for them. You know I love my coffee. I have been to a few Java's around town. They make a good cup of coffee. Hey, I drink black coffee just the way it should be. The stronger the better ! I usually make coffee so strong that your palms sweat. Java does not make it that strong but it is good in a pinch. The staff is great and they have a pleasant attitude to my jokes, God Bless them. I used to like it here but now it kinda sucks. Several months back this was my spot to chill out on the couch and write in my blog while sipping iced coffee. It was mellow and the service was smart and dependable. Now, for some reason the couch was moved to the other side of the room and jammed in a tight corner immediately behind a close table and chairs. It's very abusive to personal space and the old spot was filled with a much less charming outift. It was a really bad move. Also, the last few times I dropped in, the wifi didn't work. The barista seemed like kind of spacey and didn't know what to do to fix it either time. Nice guy, but...yeah. None of the servers knew what "simpe syrup" was and there were no straws one time for my iced coffee. I really used to like it here. At this point it was on me to tell them it was still wrong but they got a line and I got tired of being on display since the register line up area was tiny and it was a long wait to get everything.... not sure if there was management on site... we went out of the way to go here to try them. I probably won't go back... but to each their own. Take my review with a grain of salt... it may be just that they were busy. It was only two young girls working the front. Didn't see anyone else. I'm so grateful for a local coffee shop in my neighborhood with such sweet owners! Visiting them is a treat in itself, in addition to the drinks. They'll bring your order out to you if you tell them you're sitting on the lovely patio in the back, which has chill music and birds chirping. There's jazz music and tables inside for getting work done too. My boyfriend is addicted to their strawberry green tea, and the kids enjoy milkshakes and cinnamon buns. If I'm on a bike ride they'll put a smoothie in whatever travel container I bring. The owners and workers there are so friendly and make the yummiest coffee. I wanted to like it, especially after other reviewers whined about the $5 minimum credit card rule. (Evidence of an understandable ignorance of the upfront credit card fees small shops must pay.). But, I'm just not impressed at this point. What I first notice with a coffee bar is the equipment used, how the "barista" interacts with the product they are making ( a chef is intentional and particular while a cook just makes the food), and then the presentation/packaging. My drink and that of those who followed were produced with milk that was not textured and usually re-steamed two or three times. I couldn't watch the espresso shots but I listened to the machine to gauge shot times. The sounds and taste in my drink suggests the shot was way too fast. The place is kind of 'cute' though the seating choice and layout implies the owners found a great deal from a friend or patio furniture dealer closing out merchandise. More seats and easier layout wouldn't be difficult. In summary - if you area coffee foodie (coffee snob) don't expect to be wowed. If you are looking for a caffeine fix then support the local place and drive past the green mermaid. So much opportunity wasted. ** random string of consciousness re: Java Jive and the business *** In our family we joke about "the Keys to the Game" as often presented by commentators prior to a hockey game. The keys are usually obvious and fundamental like, " play all 3 periods, keep the pressure on at both ends of the ice, and put the puck into the back of the net." The challenge of course is in the execution. My love and 'rooting' for independent coffee bars is probably beyond most. The keys to the game for an Indy coffee bar are arguably more numerous and just as challenging...with less protective equipment. One of the keys for me is passion by owners for coffee and a resulting coffee house culture. A love for "Coffee" (big "C", not little c) will determine many things. The standards or quality for espresso shots, texturing of milk, sourcing and diversity of coffee beans, and even hiring of employees. I don't see that passion here. The owners need to join the Specialty Coffee Association and/or take a trip to Seattle and fall in love again. read more

My current goal in life is to find solid coffee shops around my daily routines. Java Jive is located in the Lochmere Pavillion and is the perfect location for a great coffee after my mommy and me music class. I definitely need a little pick me up after singing and dancing for 45 minutes! They have a great range of coffee and syrup flavors (some that I can't find other places) and always promote specials. Their baked goods are pretty solid as well. Because they usually only have one person at a time working behind the counter, service can be a bit slow but totally worth it! It's small and cozy- not the type of place I feel like I could sit down and enjoy my coffee while perusing the news or reading a book, I get more of a 'get it and go' vibe from this place, but don't feel rushed to leave if you can find a seat and want to stay a while! read more

Location, location, location. If Java Jive weren't in such a convenient location, I'd never go there. The coffee is ok, as long as you order brewed coffee or something simple, like a cappuccino. Don't order a flavored coffee. The staff doesn't know how much syrup to put in, and about half the time puts in the wrong flavor. The staff, ahh ... they are the best part of Java Jive. The kids are really pleasant and nice and seem genuinely happy to be there. The seating is dirty, uncomfortable, and hard to come by. If you go, go on a nice day and sit outside. Java Jive has a great location with lots of outdoor seating and a view of the woods. I agree with a lot of what "ann h." says in her review from 6/11/2010. I'm surprised she rated the place 3 stars, because she sounds as disappointed with it as I am. read more
