Always enjoyed 40 paper. I don't hit it as often as I did in the past. That being said, service was great, ambiance top notch, small plates delicious. Came here with 3 others on a Thursday night after striking out at another restaurant (we did not have a reservation). They took us in as long as we were able to be out by 7pm (it was around 5:30pm). The food came out super fast (almost too fast). We only ordered mains since we already had happy hour elsewhere. They had one special polenta cake, but no other specials. The restaurant had not filled up yet, but appeared to have some reservations booked for later on. It was pretty hot and uncomfortable in the room, and wish they had better AC. It just made me want to eat and leave faster and made it hard to enjoy the meal. We were sat next to a portable unit but it wasn't doing a very good job and pointed away from us. I got the salmon over mushroom risotto. They asked how I wanted it cooked, which isn't usually something I get asked about salmon, so I said to cook how they normally would. It was probably about medium inside, still tender and not overcooked. The salmon had a strong grill taste but not enough seasoning and the fishy brown part was still attached underneath. There is no better place to get a cocktail in Camden than here. They take each ingredient super seriously without being overly pretentious about it. This is the best place in town to get a drink on Vacation while still rubbing elbows with the locals because they know this is the spot too. The food is delicious, and Ben, Hailey, and the rest of the bar stuff are beyond knowledgeable and welcoming. My husband and I went here with another couple for dinner last weekend. Let me start by saying we frequent many of the area restaurants, and go out to eat very often. Having come from New Jersey and being Italian, we know Italian food. It is definitely difficult to find up here in the midcoast area, so we were excited to try this place. The bread that came before dinner was the high point--delicious. Again, it's hard to come by good bread up here, so that was definitely a treat. We had the fried artichokes, which I enjoyed but my husband thought were too salty. For dinner, I had the shrimp scampi, which was decent. Hubby had chicken scarpariello, and as soon as it came out, I knew he wasn't going to be happy. It was not like any chicken scarpariello either of us had ever seen--the chicken was shredded, which was downright bizarre. Making matters worse, it was over fingerling potatoes that were completely undercooked. He could not even eat those, and ended up eating dinner when we got home. He should have said something at the time, but did not want to complain as we were with friends and he just wanted to make the best of it. But for a $32 chicken dish to be a pile of shredded chicken over undercooked potatoes was quite disappointing. He followed up with a call to let them know of his displeasure, and got a very cold reception from the manager, who was quite dismissive. He didn't expect a refund, but even being encouraged to give the place another try would have been an appropriate response. They do not seem to care about having repeat patrons, which is a shame as we would have become regulars had it been a better experience. Just went there tonight 9/27/25 and had no reservation. Got in quickly which was great, but the food was extremely disappointing. I had the ragu and we also ordered the chicken piccata and baked feta. The baked feta was completely cold, the ragu was short of being good and the piccata was average. The service was horrible, considering I've worked in the service industry as a server. Would NOT recommend at all and will definitely not be back. Table for 4 for dinner booked on line. Had a pleasant as well as an enjoyable meal irrespective of what was to follow. Service was good, but a little too 'pushy' for our liking. A wine discount was offered and accepted. We thought this was genuine and in made good faith by our male server. However, at the end of the meal, having given a tip slightly above 10% of the total food / wine bill but not including tax, we were confronted by a very arrogant waiter who openly contested that a $30 tip was insufficient. Instead, he insisted upon20% which would amount to $60! Meanwhile, another server stood alongside which was quite intimidating for me to experience. The owner of the restaurant remained behind the bar across the restaurant and was not involved. A gratuity is optional, reflective of service and not compulsory and yet I was made to feel totally uncomfortable by our waiter who was passive-aggressive and openly rude, exclaiming that "we would never be back"! It is interesting to note that the restaurant....according to its website expects a 20% service gratuity for parties of 6 or more diners. We were a party of 4. Never before have I encountered such arrogant rudeness from a server who has proven to be such a poor ambassador for the reputation of a restaurant. A warning to potential diners that service is on the surface friendly but is not genuine and merely motivated by dollar gain. read more

We decided to end our one week Rockport Maine vacation with dinner at 40 Paper and Italian Bistro in Camden. A very limited but intriguing menu which we really enjoyed. Sometimes too many choices are both confusing and not warranted. We decided to go with the Bolognese Fettuccini and the Braised Lamb Shank. Both traditional Italian dishes but the braised lamb shank was prepared without tomato sauce but with root vegetables and a purée. A great dish. We also went with a Ginger Mule Virgin cocktail that was spot on. Tasty and refreshing and no alcohol! Give this restaurant a try you'll thank me later! read more

It's fine. I think that's how I feel about 40 Paper. It's well executed food and very good cocktails. Prices are fair. What 40 Paper lacks is innovation or excitement. The food did not wow me. I liked the ceasar salad with white anchovy filets. The major difference was that it was green kale instead of lettuce. I thought that was an excellent touch. I ordered osso bucco which was tender and delicious but tiny. It was maybe 2.5 ounces of meat. My wife's salmon was good with a nice crust but the grain it was served on was as cold as being taken straight out of the refrigerator. The torta desert was just ok. And I love a good olive oil almond flour cake. This was way too spongy to qualify. I'd go there if someone really wanted to go, but I won't be begging to go back. And frankly, the food at Bred in the Bone in Damariscotta is everything that 40 Paper isn't. Prices are similar but the food is an entire level better with a great deal more innovation, more drama, more warmth, and more excitement. But yeah, 40 Paper is fine. read more

Had a superb dinner here last night while in town for a girls' weekend with my besties. We made a last minute reservation and were seated immediately upon arrival. My one friend ordered the Gunslinger cocktail which was delightful. My second friend is pregnant, and the bartender kindly turned the Ranchito Verde into a mocktail for her. It was also delicious. I had a lovely Sauvignon Blanc. We did the $55 table share which allowed us to order 6 "Cicchetti" (small plates) or half flatbread pizza to share. We ordered the Mongolian Lamb Chop, the Local Brook Trout, the Cider Glazed Pork Belly, the Confit Duck Wings, and 2 orders of the Mushroom Risotto. Every dish was flavorful, inventive, and substantial in size for small plates. I am gluten free. The menu was clearly labeled, and our waitress well versed on why different dishes were or were not labeled gluten free. They also brought me AMAZING GF house made focaccia bread, and all desserts were GF. Speaking of dessert - we had the Hazlenut Cake, the Trifle, and the Italian Chocolate Torta. All delicious. If you are looking for a traditional Italian restaurant, this is not the choice for you. But if you're looking for interesting and unique bistro inspired dining, definitely check out 40 Paper. read more

When I was ready to pay, the total seemed high. I asked for a printed receipt. The flatbreads were $20, each. I said the price when I ordered on line was $16. I was told "oh yeah...our website doesn't get updated that often. Instead of re-ringing up my order, at the price I had ordered ($16) she just waited for me to pay. My 91 year old mom was in the car and I needed to leave, so I paid and left. The flatbreads were small, and not very good. Not TWENTY DOLLARS good. I would never had paid $20 bucks for what I got. I came here for happy hour drinks and appetizers and was very pleased. The patio is a nice relaxing place to enjoy a drink here. The prices were reasonable, especially at happy hour. And the food was delicious. I got arancini and it was the perfect amount to share as a nice appetizer. Always one our favorite places on the Midcoast. Kale and prosciutto pizza appetizer, fresh homeade pasta, we had the Carbonara and the Mushroom Sage ravioli, very good (our favorites!) Food was incredible! I have a severe gluten allergy and it was nice to find somewhere very GF inclusive to eat. But, the staff dings the review one point. We had reservations, and stood by the door /counter area for over 15 mins while every single employee glared at us as they walked by. Finally we had to ask the bartender how to get seated and he was rude and told us to wait over by the counter, where we already were. Finally someone came over and said our table wasn't ready yet. Got seated finally 30 mins after reservation time. The place was half empty. It feels very pretentious, for a not so fancy place. We were dressed very well, and go to far nicer restaurants often. But somehow we were made to feel not worthy enough to be there. But, unfortunately the food was amazing. Had potatoes, bolognese, and osso bucco. So I have to give them 5 stars. Thursday night dinner (10/21/2021) for two. 40 Paper is billed as Italian, but is far from traditional. Instead, it's more trendy/chic/hipster right down to the decor and background music. The servers, while efficient, lacked personality. The wine list is ample for full bottles but a skimpy by-the-glass. The Caesar Salad was made with arugula instead of romaine but still tasty. For entrees, we enjoyed pappardelle bolognese and lamb shank. Both were quite good and reasonably sized.  For dessert we ordered the cheesecake, which turned out to be 2 small scoops rather than a slice. Not what we expected, but still tasty. If you're into the trendy scene and don't mind spending $$$ for trendy food, this place is for you (but not quite right for us - we prefer a more traditional, intimate setting). Be sure to make a reservation since there's no wait list for tables - as a couple in front of us was curtly told - but surprisingly the table next to us was empty all evening. read more
