I have not had an opportunity to stay at the hotel, but ate at the restaraunt twice this summer. The schnitzel is amazing (and I'm not a curry fan), as is the flammkuchen. It was an honest mix up on both ends but they insisted we had inconvenienced them and would charge us a no-show fee. When I pointed out we'd spent almost $100 there, they doubled down on their claim. Went here on a Saturday night, parking in the dirt lot on the side and making our way to the front door instead of the side/back door that we saw some other patrons entering through. We're glad we did because entering via the front door gives the visitor (at least us) an immediate sense of being transported to the Dragonfly Inn at Stars Hollow. If you're not a Gilmore Girls fan, let's just say that it was the picture perfect representation of a quaint New England Inn, with a large staircase in the middle, cozy looking dining rooms on either side, and a waiting area that made me feel much classier than I am. While we were a bit disappointed to be seated on the brighter, chillier, somewhat shabbier porch than one of the oakier, warmer lit dining areas, it was a busy night and we were just happy to be there overall. We skipped appetizers (somewhat out of character for us) and went straight to meals: while I had just checked the menu a couple days prior and was excited to order the polenta + veggie chili I was a little annoyed to see it not on the menu that night. That said, I'm glad that their menu changes and what *was* available was a wide variety of unique, interesting, and creative looking dishes including a number of vegetarian options. We ended up going with the spanikopita and side salad with their house made creamy garlic dressing. The spanikopita was warm with a delicious, buttery, flaky crust, though the filling was a bit overdone, leaving a bit of an imbalance in the flavors between cheese and crust, and plenty of gooey cheese left over when the crust was long gone. The dressing was a top notch covering for the basic (though generous without being large) side salad. Our other order was the Roasted Goat pizza which despite its name is veggie friendly ("goat" equals goat cheese, or perhaps means "greatest of all time"). The pizza was indeed the highlight -- easily the best we've had anywhere in a ~100 mile radius, with a perfectly done thin crust that was soft without being soggy. The toppings were perfectly cooked and proportioned, and the flavor profile was unique and deep. This is clearly their expertise (we'd heard from a couple other folks the pizza was worth it) and it alone is worth a return trip. While the service was friendly, it was largely absent, and we definitely would've expected more attentive, professional service to match the food quality. This friendly-yet-absent service is something that many Maine restaurants struggle with, and to be honest, while I frequently complain to people at home about the abject rudeness of servers in NYC when I go there for work trips, I'm beginning to appreciate their equally consistent attentiveness and professionalism as a counterbalance to even the higher end restaurant options in my beloved home state. That's one of the key reasons I'm giving this a 4 star rating vs. 5, and I'd love to see that casual atmosphere maintained while ticking up the timeliness and attention a bit more. That alone would take this from a must-visit to a top 10 ranking for the area if not the state. read more

This place is INCREDIBLE. One of my all time favorite meals. But first an Important disclaimer! This is now under new ownership and management!! Beware reviews 6 months or older because it's a whole new ballgame at Barncastle. Lizzie and Owen who took over the inn and restaurant have something special going here. The tavern is a VIBE. Great music, great drinks (sober friends: they make a mean mocktail), and legit some of the best food I've had... maybe ever. We started with the asparagus soup and toasted ends. If the meal ended there, we'd have called it a huge win and still written this review. But my goodness... the roasted half chicken! The flammkuchen! The rhubarb pistachio cake! The flavors and balance were just out of this world. I don't write a lot of reviews, but this one needed to be shouted from the mountaintops because these are good people turning around an old business and turning out a PHENOMENAL product in the process. Every dish has soul, personality and love in it. We've paid a lot more for hyped up spots in Portland, NYC, Boston, and beyond that were half as good as Lizzie and Owen's new look Barncastle. But the best part is the approachability of the whole endeavor. The staff is friendly and helpful. It's a small dining area and a 10 seat bar with some high tops as well. This is a cozy affair in the best ways. Just an all around awesome experience. We did some good eating all around Hancock and Waldo county this weekend and this was the best of the best without question. We'll be back soon to eat, and to stay this next time. Brooksville, Maine is a small, quiet town about an hour away from Acadia. I stayed at an Air B n B and the host recommended this place! It doesn't look very busy but they are. We walked in and had to wait about 5-10 minutes before someone acknowledged us even though several walked by then once they greeted us we waited about another her 5-10 for a table. I did think it was worth the wait. I got a goat cheese and egg plant pizza, was delicious! My friend got clam chowder and she also loved it! If I ever make my way back here I will definitely be by for another pizza! read more

What a refreshing take on a Maine B&B! First of all, you can't MISS the building from the road--literally the combo of a barn and a castle, such cool architecture. I only went to try the restaurant, not the hotel itself, but what a perfect little escape. My partner and I loved the chef's take on Alsatian food--we've never been to France, but we were definitely transported to a new place! Apparently, the couple who owns it went to Alsace for their honeymoon, which is a cute inspiration for their restaurant. Yes this is a somewhat confusing place near Blue Hill just down the road from Tradewinds. It is a Victorian looking place nicely remodeled inside into a small Inn and a restaurant and bar. They have a nice selection of beers including some rotating taps of local brews as well as wine and spirits. They have a big eclectic menu with everything from cold sesame noodles to 2 pages of pizza including some unusual specialty pies and they have nice daily specials. As you might guess, there are some big hits and some misses. First of all, the service. It is hard to hire enough servers in this part of Maine and Barncastle seems understaffed to me. Our waitress was great: hardworking pleasant, and eager to please. She kept apologizing for the delay, at one point forgot to get our order but admitted it and tried hard to make up for it. However, she had too many tables and everything took a long time to happen. We really didn't mind since we were enjoying 2 hours of a jazz duo who played very pleasant if forgettable music. The food varied. The regular mussels in wine sauce were fantastic, some of the best I ever had:fresh, served in a 2 part pot with crusty bread, terrific sauce and a long ladle to serve them with. The wood fired pizza had a nice thin crispy crust. I didn't like the whole wheat like spelt crust but the white crust was great. The homemade tomato sauce had big chunks of tomato but to me there was too much on the pizza and it kind of overwhelmed the pie. The pizza Margarita with fresh tomatoes instead of the sauce was outstanding. The "sea smoke" pizza was not at all to my liking: far too salty and with too much sauce. Be sure to get a reservation on nights they have music; they were turning people away at the door. You can get a great meal if you order carefully. Just do not be in a hurry. read more

I have visited here multiple times. Having both eaten and slept here I will rate this location as both. First, the lodgings. I have only stayed in one room here, but hope to sample each in the future. Suite five is a beautiful french blue room tucked away down the back hall. The room was spotless, beautiful, decorated simply, tastefully, and comfortably; it definitely fit the vibe of the place. This room is quaint and cozy. A few things I must mention, this is an old building, so there is character. Of course with old buildings, comes wear and tear. Our door would not lock and the toilet ran constantly after it was flushed. I approached the staff downstairs, and they alleviated these problems in a flash. The chain was falling off the arm in the tank of the toilet, so it just needed to be crimped; this could happen anywhere. A plumber at the bar heard our problem, came upstairs with me, and fixed it before staff--who were so quick, it was hard to believe he could have beat them up there--got to our room. The door was an easy fix, and something had just come loose. The service was spot on. No complaints. You stay in an old Inn, you get the flaws that come with character and age, but that is all part of the allure. If you want new, go stay in some gaudy and chintzy hotel built by some conglomerate, if you want character and comfort, stay at the Barncastle. Food. The food is great comfort food. Flavorful. Tasty. Good. The pizza is great. Meatballs are good. The appetizers wonderful. They have a brick oven which they cook their food in. It is a wonderful addition to the experience of this location. The dining area is in the front of the inn, and still has the dark wood trim set against warm golden painted walls. The bar is dark wood, close, cozy, and a great place to wile away winter afternoons while the storm rages outside. I have never been there when they didn't have Strong Brewing Company on tap. You don't find this beer often around the state, and it is good. Brewed right down the road in Sedgewick, the Barncastle supports the local scene, and it is appreciated. They have a full bar, and make great cocktails as well. The staff is friendly, courteous, and attentive. Give this place a try. Oh...and they have a billiard room outside in the old carriage house. Grab a pitcher, beer, some wings, and go play some pool. Seriously, check the place out. Explore the Blue Hill Peninsula. Spend the day in Brooklin, Maine at the reversing rapids and Naskeag Point. Check out Deer Isle, but at the end of the day, check into the Barncastle, relax for the evening. Kick back with a beer, and enjoy. read more

For people unaccustomed to small New England towns, it's easy to overuse the word 'quaint'. In that spirit, Barncastle is a quaint little hotel/restaurant in a very quaint-looking part of Maine. Quaint. Part castle, I guess, but really mostly barn, the restaurant portion offers some cozy fireside dining far (very far) from the madding crowd. The appeal of the menu is that it doesn't try too hard: all recognizable American dishes with a few gourmet twists. Their menu changes seasonally and includes local microbrews and local organically grown ingredients as well. Specifics: my brother and I have been conducting informal audits of New England clam chowders for almost two decades now. Barncastle's fares well. Their wood-fired pizza, which is about half their menu, is also excellent. Intangibles: great atmosphere; typically (for the region) courteous waitstaff; and a pool table in a room off to the side. read more

There were empty tables and no other guests waiting, and it took them a very long time to seat us - really unacceptable. We almost left, and we are not snooty "we're leaving!" type of people. The pizza at this restaurant is perfectly adequate. There is nothing special about it and also nothing wrong with it. Given Covid, the outdoor seating options are nice. They were out of a number of toppings, but there was plenty available. I'm sure restaurants are still figuring out how to order enough as they adjust to new takeout demands during these tricky times. The reason that I gave them one star was their treatment of customers which completely ruined the experience: We called at 5:30pm to ask how long the wait would be for takeout. We were told that food would be ready at 6:40pm, so we placed an order. We arrived at 6:20pm (knowing that we were early). The employee confirmed that our food was in the over and on track to be ready at 6:40pm. At 6:45 we were told that they were running a few minutes behind. We checked in again at 7pm, 7:15pm.... our food finally came at 7:50pm, over an hour later than we were quoted. I completely understand that they were busy. My issue was that: 1) We were very friendly, but asked if they could tell us when to expect the food and for the entire nearly 2.5 hours that we waited we were told "in a few minutes". If she just told us how long it would be, we wouldn't have been happy, but our expectations would have been managed. 2) At 7:15 the employee began lying and saying that she quoted us 7:30 for our food. There were multiple other customers there who had all heard her tell us 6:30 on multiple occasions. Mistakes are made, it happens, but lying is unacceptable. 3) We were clearly being put behind "locals". Multiple customers came in while we waited who clearly knew the staff. At least 4 that we overheard mentioned that they were early for their pickups. All of them got their food within minutes. At the end is was us and two others visiting from out of state waiting. If the restaurant didn't want to serve people who weren't their friends, they shouldn't have taken our orders. When they finally brought the food the employee lied again saying that they were taking the salad off our bill to make up for the delay. We assumed that meant she would be coming back with a receipt or recharge as we had already paid... she went back into the restaurant, we stayed there for 30 minutes eating, she never came back and never adjusted the bill. The food is fine, but the employee we interacted with was a liar and took no care about our experience at all. We will not return. read more

If you have had the unfortunate experience of entering a beautiful New England inn only to have your heart broken by a botched and horrifying renovation inside, then prepare yourself for a wonderful surprise. The Barncastle is lovely throughout. As an inn in this area I would give it 6 stars and as an inn anywhere I would probably give it 4(we had a couple small issues with the room). So 5 is the average I came up with. I stayed here for about 5 days over xmas 1.5 yrs ago. It is a beautifully restored inn/restaurant with an atrium style foyer and cozy eating area. Upstairs there are comfortable/contemporary renovated sleeping quarters. The food is pizza/pub style fare and is quite fresh and good. When my wife and I stayed here we had some issues with cold loss through a breezy window and a small plumbing problem. They were quite sympathetic and gave me a night or half a night free which I felt was more than fair. I would heartily recommend this inn to anyone going to the Blue Hill Brooklin maine area and have every intention of staying there again should the need arise. read more

As a result the menu has a little bit of everything, crab cakes, salads, a large variety of wood fired pizzas,burritos, wraps etc. All the dishes our large group (which was easily accommodated) sampled were at least good, and some things like my giant Greek salad and the crab cakes were surprisingly tasty.That plus a nice selection of local beers on tap and well made cocktails, make this restaurant a good choice if you are in the area. read more

I spent 4 nights at this wonderful inn. The room was very clean, updated, and the bedding and bath linens very nice. The owners and staff were welcoming and made me very comfortable. We love BarnCastle and have been many years in a row. We are here on vacation (at a family friend's home) and quarantined at home before we were able to go out to eat. We were extremely excited to come to Barncastle because we love the ambience and pizza! Because of COVID, we called ahead and spoke to a female employee to check their hours and how things work now. She said we could order there for pickup and get our pizza and eat at any of the outdoor areas. She told us they were open until 8 PM. There were four of us listening to the phone call (the employee we spoke to was on speaker phone). We arrived to Barncastle at 7:18 and walked up to the order/takeout window to order. The woman we spoke to (short dark hair and tattoos) was so unpleasant that we will not be coming back this vacation. Her exact words when we informed her that we spoke to someone on the phone who told us close was 8 PM was "well I don't know who told you that because we're all aware that we close at 7." Such a bad attitude and so rude. I also read other recent reviews that reflect the staff is incredibly rude and snooty this season. Pass. read more

We have both eaten and stayed here a number of times and we always enjoy our stay. The staff is pleasant, the rooms are spacious, comfortable and charming with truly elegant bones and we have always found that we feel at home visiting Barncastle. The history of the building is really neat, and worth asking about (there are great binders in each room that contain the info as well). It's funky and unpretentious with good drinks and a menu with a plethora of options. We have always enjoyed their pizza and salads on our visits. It's a very approachable place with a great community vibe. A fun, affordable getaway for sure. My single caution would be road noise from some of the rooms, we have noticed it periodically, so if you're a light sleeper it might be worth investigating a room that does not have road frontage (there are some!) read more

Barncastle isn't just one of the greatest place to purchase delicious pizza in Blue Hill, Maine, it's one of the greatest places to meet with loving family members and enjoy crab cakes, delicious pizza and more than exquisite salads and drinks. Living in Blue Hill for the past 12 years, I've eaten here to many times to count. I haven't visited the hotel rooms, but I've heard from many of my friends that the rooms are classy, clean kept and comfortable. I recommend this place when visiting gorgeous Blue Hill fully.
