My roommate and I visited from Maryland. It was much bigger than anticipated and they had great selection and deals. My one complaint is that it takes them a while to process your donations and you only have 24 hours to accept the offer they give you. If you came from Maryland like we did, this isn't helpful. I wish there were extra staff members to process your donations while you shopped so you could accept before leaving. Overall, a cool store. Well, if you don't want to pay full on retail for books, vinyl or other novelties this is your place.. Last month I took about 25 Funkos to this location, mint condition and on eBay they went from 30-75 dollars.. I thought they would offer me 20% of that.. boy was I wrong.. the offer for the 25 Funkos was $31 total.. so prepare yourself After leaving the store I got a call from a clerk telling me that they didn't give me all my Funkos back.... Being that I love 25 miles away I came back to the store 2 weeks later.. the manager said they "recycled them" and basically I was shit out of luck.. Have to say as a quirky person, like this store that is that. They have a good book selection. Is it as big as a B&N? Nope but it suffices. You will find value here, no doubt about that. Also they have some eclectic items. That alone means visit it. Nice location right off of route 50. Parking can be challenging. Please do be careful. As for the employees, they are solid folks. Ok I know what you might be thinking, a 2 stars?! My initial reaction to finding this store was "I'm in love! A book lovers delight!!" Bc there was so many books everywhere and it was sectioned off by genre. I thought I had found the bookstore jackpot, but honestly, this was so disappointing!! Unorganized and inconsistent: Yes, there's so many books but it is extremely unorganized. You cannot find anything you want to read or purchase here. Nothing is sorted and even when you try to look for something to catch your eye, you can't. This stores website makes it seem like a second hand store, but its collection is mixed with new books and used books but nothing is labeled so you wouldn't know. Their prices are all over, some are regular priced, some discounted, it's hard to find consistency. Random things: I will say, I like their selection of knickknacks- Funko pop, tshirts, games, manga, aesthetic things!! It reminded me of a mix of Urban Outfitters and Little Thingamajigs.. I know that sounds random but that was the vibe! Hahah They also sold CDs, DVDs, vinyl albums, guitars, record players. Buy, sell, trade: The website also states that they buy, sell and trade books. They made it seem like a great deal and that we would be able to get some money back. As a teacher, I brought in two boxes full of books, thinking they'd be able to buy my books that I cannot use in my classroom. They took 10 of my books for $1.10!?!!!!! They also told me they couldn't sell back any of my books so they'd be donating them ?!!!!!!!?????? Yet.. I found some of the books on the shelves that they did sell.. it seemed too sussy for me. I would NOT RECOMMEND selling here!!! It's not worth your time. Customer service: Also, the customer service both times was rude. The first time at drop off, the cashier was standoffish. The second time, I received a phone call where he asked "when will you come pick up your stuff? We couldn't take most of it" It seemed to me that I was the one who was bothering them by offering to sell books they didn't want to take in. I didn't appreciate the interactions. Legit what is wrong with the people pricing the comic books at this location? Whoever's task it is to price everything $4.95, $9.95 is absolutely insane. The last time I came in here, I walked out feeling ripped off just looking at the prices on the comic books. It wasn't just one $5 book, they were all $5. All junk. Anything with remote value was jacked up in price even more. This is price gouging. Just a few years ago these were $1 books in this store. This kind of stuff makes me hope you go out of business at this location too. They probably pay 10 cents for each of those books they have listed for $5. read more

This place is awesome! It's like if Barnes & Noble got together with FYE / Suncoast/Tower Records/ Sam Goody/Funcoland and was done by Borders! They have everything you can think of from music, movies, TV shows, Anime collectibles, games, even vinyl records and vinyl record players! I even found a gift for my fiance who is a huge Harry Potter fan! We were in the area celebrating the last day of my bachelor party and I wanted to check out the store. I wanted to get a small token of appreciation for my fiancé for when I came back home. They have a huge selection of all different types of items even video games and guitars on the wall! If I have any money left over after the wedding I will definitely be returning to this awesomely nostalgic Time Capsule of a store! The staff is also very kind and courteous that I interacted with the one thing I will mention is because they have a wide selection of rare items you will pay a premium for a lot of these things because they are hard to find, however that does not mean they can't be had for a good price or you can't find things in the store on sale because I did notice a lot of things on sale. However, even with the sale prices you are essentially paying a premium for the convenience of finding everything you could want at this Hidden Gem of rare collectibles in just about every medium conceivable. It's a great space with a mix of new and used books. You'll find a lot of variety, but searching can sometimes be a little challenging. The overall alphabetical organization is close, but you'll see once you get past the first letter of the last name, it can be a little wonky. If you're just quickly browsing, you may easily miss something you're looking for. There is some interesting variety of non-book items as well. I picked up a T-shirt that was marked down quite a bit as a gift. More of a "pleasant surprise". read more

I called the store in the morning to ask about their buyback program and, based on the information I received, decided to drive in from Alexandria with a couple of boxes of items. When I arrived, I was disappointed to learn that the buyback program was already closed for the day. No one had informed me of this when I called, even though I had mentioned that I was coming from a distance. When I asked to speak to the manager, he agreed to take my items but did so with a less-than-friendly attitude. To make matters worse, when I tried to use a couple of their boxes to carry my items from the car, I was told that I couldn't take the boxes outside. This meant I would have to carry three boxes worth of books by hand from my car, which was incredibly inconvenient. The entire experience left me feeling disappointed and unappreciated as a customer, so I decided to leave. It's clear that they weren't interested in my business. read more

This place has so much great potential! I wanted to give it more stars bc of the sheer volume of books and music and games they have! It was a little hard to find things though - and I kept having to ask the employees where I could find books. The kids section isn't organized in a way I understand so i didn't really know how to find things. We are lucky to have some incredible libraries in our area so my kids felt like this was another library and didn't realize we actually had to buy these books. I also was unclear of what was 'new' vs 'used' - and had to ask a bunch of times. We came with some books to sell and they buy it back as a group so I couldn't really see what they would take for each book since they give you a number and then text you once it's ready. We'll keep coming back though bc it's such a cool store and I'd love to be able to eventually find some amazing treasures. read more

All I can say is thank goodness for libraries and 2nd & Charles! Raising a future bibliophile does not come cheap but between these two places, replenishing our bookshelves should be easy on the wallet. Here are some highlights and first impressions of the 2nd & Charles Chantilly location: 1. A massive space with a large and diverse selection of used and new books. The store is definitely designed to appeal to a younger crowd or the young at heart. Besides books, the store is well-stocked with games, puzzles, toys, and other fun and random trinkets . It's a great place for unique gifts. 2. LOVE the children's section for its huge selection. Labels for baby books, beginner readers and others are extremely helpful. The downside is the shelves themselves aren't always well organized, making it a challenge to search and find a particular title or author. 3. Reasonable prices for used books. I nabbed a few picture books in good quality for my little girl for $3! 4. Surprisingly, the children's section doesn't have a dedicated area for Spanish-language books. Oddly I found two in the Spanish-language section under adult fiction. I'm guessing and hoping they were there by error? A little disappointing. 5. Ironically the lighting in the store isn't great for reading. But if you wanted to hang out here all day (which is tempting), there is seating at the back of the store. There are also appeared to be a bar with additional seating to the left of the entrance of the store. Friendly staff. Inviting environment. Affordable prices. You can't ask for more from a second-hand bookstore. read more

I really want to love 2nd and Charles... and I have found some used books at a great price. However, they are often overpriced, and yet they pay pennies for the items people bring in. I do enjoy perusing the shelves, but have now had multiple bad experiences at the store and will spend my money elsewhere. I took in a box of books and movies, including a stack of almost brand-new Book of the Month books, and was given $2.50 for it all (or $5 in store credit). However, they frequently price Book of the Month books on their shelves higher than the original cost of the books. In all, the value of my box to them was well over $100. I was not expecting a lot, but for $2.50, I might as well have gone to Goodwill. We also once purchased a movie series box set, which had a Goodwill sticker on it reading $4.99. When it rang up at $15, the cashier pointed to the $15 sticker they had added instead, which we had not seen. They refused to bring down the price despite us pointing out the original sticker they failed to remove. Obviously, whoever had sold them the set originally had not paid the 300% markup for it that they were now charging. Overall, we've had bad experiences both as a customer and in attempting to sell items to them. I can't recommend that anyone shop here (or at least do your research on prices first!) read more

This store isn't as big as the other one I've been to (the location escapes me at the moment), but it's nice, cleaned organized. Finally one day I decided to stop in and check it out. How have I never heard of this place? Although the store is huge , the eclectic mix of books music , vintage, new , used was awesome! 2nd & Charles seems more like a boutique shop I'd expect to find in a fancy neighborhood than in a run down strip mall in Chantilly . The sections of books music dvds video games is huge. I Love that there is also a cute sitting area for kids and adults towards the back ! The only thing this place is missing is a cafe and maybe more places to sit . It's a nice surprise to see a store like this still in existence! Amazing! 2nd & Charles = comic book/game store + Paper Source doodads (mugs, pens, gifts) + Barnes & Noble They have sooooo many doodads that this is going to be a gift-finding go-to for me for sure. Their prices are very reasonable too. I like how the store is arranged, but you may have trouble finding something in particular right away. We went in because, "Oh, what's a 2nd & Charles?" We're just now leaving TWO HOURS later with fancy Japanese stationary pens, a guided journal, a chuthulu journal, a tarot card guide, some tea-themed earrings, etc, etc. Not a bad stop-in. Sections we liked: rare books, tabletop games, journals, and themed displays (unicorns, yoga, books-that-are-now-TV-shows, and gifts (mugs, socks, book paraphernalia, plushies, etc). It appears other reviewers were raw about the wait time for resale books. Maybe plan to grab food while waiting if that's what you're interested in, because I'd hate to see this store lose business because of unrelated-to-the-quality-of-merchandise complaints. I was SO excited to discover there is finally a more local used book store to my home!!! This place has so much potential but is so disorganized! All adult books are basically just in one huge section called "fiction" making it a workout to find what you're looking for. I love the idea of new and used books mixed together so now I can support my local bookstore when new releases come out too! BUT the new releases are all cover price, which lets be honest, doesn't exist anywhere anymore. Even target and Barnes and nobles discount off cover price and they're infamously the more expensive route with amazon prime in the game. Be careful of bait-and-switch rip-offs at this store and avoid this business if you have even a moderate expectation of customer service and satisfaction (admittedly, the threshold is fairly low these days). As a first-time customer, I dropped off a box of recently published "like-new" academic and coffee table books (even used, in a value amounting to about 200-300.00 dollars based on Amazon and Ebay) and was advised by the laconic employee that it would take "1-3 days or maybe longer" to process them and give me an estimate. I was clear that I'd prefer to pick them back up if unhappy with the pay-out (I understand that the book buyback business is cutthroat and would have been happy with just 25 dollars). He/they then took my contact info. I waited and never received an email or phone call. When I contacted the store, a week later, I was advised that an amount of less than 8 dollars had automatically been put on my account and that I could no longer (re)claim my books. This was never explained as a condition of sale/buyback; -- and I specifically asked about their policy when I dropped the books off because of relative their value. I seldom complain and never write reviews but want to advise my fellow bibliophiles thinking of selling books to avoid this business. I'm filing a complaint with corporate HQ (BAM!, as it turns out) but doubt this will even result in a response or any sincere effort to seek a modicum of customer satisfaction. No surprise, but the contact info provided by the store employee for customer complaints was also incorrect (spoiler, it's not customerservice@booksamillion.com as he/they advised). Aside from this experience, the overall organization of this store is confounding. Rather than organizing the nonfiction books by general topic (i.e. history by region, current affairs, psychology, science, etc.) and THEN alphabetically by author, most of the nonfiction books are grouped together in several long aisles in a haphazard alphabetic manner (alternating between author's last name, first name, or title as far as I could determine). The only sections that are clearly organized are the entertainment and pop culture sections...it's almost as if the store's employees only bother to organize the sections that interest them and just throw all the other books on the shelves at random. McKay's Used Books in Manassas is a longer drive and has the same general lack of customer service (rude and laconic employees), but at least it's far better organized than 2nd & Charles and McKay's buyback policies are ruthlessly transparent. read more

I'm so glad to see my hometown has a cool new little bookstore! I came here recently when visiting from out of town, and I was thrilled. There are a lot of cookbooks, and plenty of inexpensive kids books as well. Christine helped me find the exact book I needed for my friend's daughter, and she was very knowledgeable with children's literature. Prices are great, too! Do not sell books here. The idea is great but I took two full bins of books in excellent shape! I placed things on hold and was told that they would be held so that I could apply credit for purchases. Two full bins of hardbacks in excellent shape!! It would have been hundreds at Barnes and Noble.... And after waiting 3 days.... Drumroll... they handed me $3. That is nothing short of criminal behavior. They literally just stole books from me. The response? "They are considered "overstock material" so they will be sent to a center to be recycled. Ummmm... well I'm not sure what to think. Are they censoring? Perhaps. One thing for sure: they are stealing. They could not provide an invoice for books they took. A yard sale would be more lucrative and organized. Do NOT sell here. This is my favorite bookstore for now. Its bright and organized. Extremely welcoming for youth to come hangout read and play games and just chill with their friends. It gives a safe and fun vibe. And there are music records dvds and books for all age ranges. The people that work there are friendly and extremely helpful. And the price is so pocket friendly! read more

These people are the ABSOLUTE WORST. Do not EVER try and trade in anything here. I walk in with about 50 some products to trade in. Before I can even unpack it the employees are picking through and calling dibs. They tell you to leave your stuff and you'll get a text in a few hours. LIES. I called back before store closing and was rudely told by Jimmy that "didn't I clearly see they were busy. And they may reach out the next day or day after." Third day they have my product... I call and once again am rudely told it was ready yesterday, yet no heads up. I drove out to get the quote of the buy back. I'm told it was not ready when I arrive and have to clarify I was told it was. For $1700 worth of product they offer me $100 in cash. ARE YOU SERIOUS?! Now here's the slap in the face, I spend the next 20 minutes peeling people post it stickers off MY products with various employees names calling dibs on my stuff they wanted. Honestly not even worth the gas wasted. Really do yourself a HUGE favor and avoid this place. They are rude, not helpful and will beyond low ball you just to get what you're trying to trade. I like the fact that 2nd and Charles had other stuff besides just books and comics. When I first shopped there, they were able to apply a student discount to my purchase which I love!!! But when I ask them about it, later, they tell me that they do not do that which they have previously done before. I also had traded in some books which took them four days to go through. This place is huge, but messy and disorganized. They probably have a ton of gems lying around but because the organization here is slightly confusing for the books and a lot of things are messily put on tables and racks, so it can be frustrating and hard to find anything. For the CDs, for example, it's clear they don't go through and check the alphabetization - there were a ton misplaced, on different racks, and on the ground. If you have the time and patience to do a bit of digging, you just might find some cool stuff. read more

I went to purchase something here a few weeks ago. I was called over to the register and showed the cashier my phone to scan my 2NC coupon. She scanned it. I couldn't see the screen from my end so I asked her if my discount went through. I don't know if her head was in the clouds or what, but she said, "yes your discount has been applied." Elated, I pay for my items and leave. When I get home after driving about 30 minutes, I check the receipt only to see NO discount added whatsoever. Pretty messed up for her to be so distracted that she lied to a paying customer telling them that their discount went through. I did their survey later on through their receipt and got contacted by their GM later on, apologizing for the error and being reimbursed with a $20 2NC gift card. He said he sent it that day and I still haven't received it to this day. I emailed him again to ask him if it got lost in transit or if there was ever a tracking number I could have to see where it was. No answer. I'm starting to believe no gift card was ever sent in the first place. Awful customer service. Don't come here. read more

Whoooohooo!! Big fan of this place! We miss the staples but man is this quite the replacement! It has so many rows and rows of adventure to walk around and discover. A bookworm's heaven! The prices are amazing and it's such a nice surprise that they offer both new AND used books! I wanted to sell some of my college textbooks(good riddance) but unfortunately they don't take textbooks- probably the only sad thing about their store, maybe that policy will change soon! Otherwise, great finds,great ambiance. You can hangout and just read there if you want to too. Lots of options for kids but even adults, their nonfiction was awesome. I found some really new books as "used" and excellent prices! One which was a 2019 book was originally $50, in brand new condition, and I only bought it for $11! I went to 2nd and Charles for the 2nd time since it opened on 1/10/20. I enjoyed the store the 2nd time more than 1st. If you're a bargain shopper like me it is a great place to find books and puzzles. I was looking for some jigsaw puzzles for a birthday gift. I was able to find (at a very reasonable price) a unique double sided puzzle. I only had a little time to spend in 2nd and Charles but could easily have spent another 40 minutes looking around. Such a disappointment! I had 8 boxes of books that I had hoped to trade for credit. The person on duty immediately went through them, rejecting half of the total books I had schlepped in. Many excuses were provided why my books were not acceptable; too big, not enough space, too many of a popular author. I ended up with 3 bins of admissible books and was told that processing my credit would take a couple days due to how backed they were. I asked if I could donate my undesirable books and was told this was not an option due to lack of space. So I took my unwanted books with me. Today I went to redeem my credit and was given $6.85. An absolute insult. I certainly wasn't expecting a windfall, but thought maybe 25-30 bucks in credit? Small redemption, I went to McKays Used Books in Manassas and was given $51.00 in credit in 20 minutes for my rejected books! So if you want a fair trade, drive right past 2nd & Charles and head west to Manassas. read more

I've only purchased items from 2nd & Charles and I haven't used their process to sell my own items so I can't speak to that. For a used book store, it's clean and well laid out. The staff was very friendly and casual. The prices are about the same as buying from eBay but I appreciate being able to inspect the merchandise (e.g. check a DVD for scratches) right there. It's a fun place to browse and I'll be checking them first when I'm looking for a movie or video game. read more

It has now been 1 hour 15 minutes of wait time for my books to be evaluated while being promised that it would take 30 Minutes. The guy in front was not very professional & rude; when I asked about the status he said it would be additional 20 minutes on top of it. I don't think this store will last much longer.
