I think anyone that works in a record shop should be a cool person. They don't have to be Pink Panther cool but they do need to be a cool person. Everyone at Modius is cool, friendly and knowledgeable. The selection is a mix of new and used vinyl and is well displayed and labeled. They have a limited, but solid new jazz section, a large new rock section. I can't speak to the soul, R&B, metal or hip-hop sections. The used bins are where I spend my time and I've found some really good LP's there. Prices for new and used are reasonable and there is good value for your dollar there. Actually the prices for new vinyl is better than most In the area. It's a great shop! read more

Great vinyl shop! Very clean, well organized with a great selection of records! Very friendly too! I have a very large collection of records from the 196o's, 1970's and some 1980's. I was surprised to find out they are worth anything. The proprietor is in a nationally recognized musician in a heavy metal band. He was very friendly and took the time to explain the current vinyl craze. I was there for pricing. The owner said he would give me about 1/3 of what he could sell them for. I do not know if this is true , but I found an on-line store that says they will give 1/2 of what they are worth. Since I am retired and have extra time. I plan to sell my records on eBay. Good selection, but overpriced. They should have a larger discount selection for marked down stock that doesn't move quickly enough. I was greeted when I walked in and on my way out. Personally, I would like to see more new Reggae artists. CD Cellar didn't have many either, but at least they had a vast discount section with some decent stuff in there. I might give this place another shot next time I'm in town. UPDATE: After I wrote this review, the business owner took the time to personally respond. I think that's worth a star. I wish more businesses would do that. I'll be the first to admit I may have missed a section or 2 on my first visit, so I will definitely go back again. read more

I came here with high expectations. I came here to sell some of my old vinyl from my collection. I figured taking them to a nice shop would give collectors a better chance of buying them. I called prior to see if there was anything they didn't accept. Person said we don't take classical music or anything prior to 60. Great, I thought, most of my stuff is 70s and forward. I get there around 5 pm and the person at the register says we're closing soon so I won't be able to check all these records (a crate full). They close at 6. Ok, no problem. I pull out my heavy hitters that I'm sure they would be interested in (the Cure, etc). Then he tells me oh we don't take singles either. That would have been nice to know beforehand. He begins to make a stack of stuff he's interested in. I'm like ok at least I'll sell a few. He starts looking though the records and taking them out of the sleeves. He shakes his head. Then he tells me that there's fingerprints on the records and it has to be cleaned. I told him those are mine since I was checking to make sure there were no scratches. He looks over the record cover and points out some wear. They're 60 year old records! Really!? Then he gives me the whole stack back and says maybe goodwill will take them. That was rude as hell. Really, my stuff is basically trash? I took my records to another shop and they were happy to buy my "goodwill records". Don't go here to sell records. They want 50 year old records sealed and in perfect condition. read more

Very nice and clean shop. The staff are helpful and personable. One item of note, they do not do trades on the weekends. I only know because when I was in the store, someone wanted to trade in some records and they said they only do that on weekdays. I was very impressed with the large selection of vinyl records and tapes that Mobius offers for sale. I was in the store to listen to a band that was getting ready to launch their new album. Although my visit was a few years ago I clearly remember the great experience, the unique things that they had and how laid back the atmosphere was! The store is a great resource for many different types of music as well as audio equipment such as turntables, speakers, headphones etc. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Mobius Records. The variety and quality of the merchandise is excellent. This spot is freakin legendary. At least half of our record collection is from here. They sell new (like very new--recent, in-demand artists) and used. I've even been able to score some really great used finds for cheap. In addition, they sell record players and other merch, including shirts and hoodies. I snagged a pretty sick hoodie that they did as a collab with Marlowe Ink. They have been AMAZING through the quarantine, initially having hours where you could pick up preordered records in front of the shop. Now they have adapted to the latest phase and are allowing 4 customers in at a time with a mask. In the non-Covid days, this was a chill spot to sit down and listen to a record. They are usually stocked with lots of awesome artists from every genre. Since I guess I'm at a point in my life where I just listen to dad rock, I've really appreciated that they often have nearly full discographies of some of my favorites like The National and Minus The Bear. They have a discogs site where you can see what they have and they keep it updated. They can also sometimes order things for you. You can DM the shop on Instagram and they usually get back to you pretty fast. The owner Dempsey is super helpful, friendly and down to earth. read more

The only thing that Mobius suffers from is that it doesn't cater to a niche genre or much underground stuff; it's very editorial (the jazz section could be improved). Although it's editorial, I think it's a great place for collecting veterans and beginners to frequent. The price is pretty similar to things you'd find on Amazon, I'm confident in saying if you shopped here you'd save money on delivery. Dempsey and others are super helpful when it comes to giving recommendations and talking about music in general. Although I don't live in the VA area anymore, I've maybe bought more than 200+ records from them and if I visit the area again I will gladly return. read more

This is my all time favorite record store. They have a broad selection, they are organized, they correctly label everything, and the staff is friendly and helpful. They don't put used records on the shelves unless the play well. If the record is anything less than VG+, they disclose any issues on the label. This is about the best a vinyl store can be with respect to balancing space, price and variety. The shop is small and the quantity of used vinyl isn't stellar but I always walk out with a nice batch for $25-$30. I've been shopping (mostly used) vinyl for over 30 years and overall, quality included, this shop is top notch. read more

A tiny store with plenty of new records and - my favorite - stacks of $3 and below bargain-bin LPs. There's a place to sit down and listen to your records, too. They have some cassettes but no CDs. This is a great compliment to the Record & Tape Exchange a few miles away. They even have a box of FREE records that are deemed too scratched or warped to play, although they make cool wall decorations! Small but excellent vinyl record store near the George Mason University campus. This shop is virtually all vinyl, with used records and new, sealed albums sitting side by side. There were also a few cassettes and a handful of CDs available for sale when I visited. The store is very well organized and clean, and the used records are generally in nice condition. There aren't many "junk" records wasting away in the bins; the ratio of good stuff to bad stuff is quite good here. Several categories are represented in this shop, including rock, jazz, soul/R&B, hip-hop, soundtracks, local, folk, blues, country, electronic, classical, etc. There are separate bins for records that are $3 and under, and you can make some nice finds there. There's also a small selection of 45s. I'd give this store five stars if it were larger and the selection were bigger, but that said, this is a really nice vinyl shop. Another bonus is the parking garage next door that's free. If you're at all into vinyl, give this place a visit. It's just a few miles away from the Record and Tape Exchange in Fairfax, so visiting both in one trip is easy -- although, frankly, Mobius Records is a higher-quality store. read more

Friendly and helpful staff with a good selection of new and used records at fair/cheap prices. Good assortment in different genres of music. 99% of the store is new and used vinyl, but they also have a selection of used cassettes, turntables, and accessories. I stop in here at least once a week and all the used vinyl I've bought here has been in good playable condition... even the stuff from the cheap $3 & Under section. Mobius Records is very nice. It's tiny but it offers a great selection of records both new and used. Only problem is if you prefer older records, you may have a harder time because Mobius specializes in newer records, however if that's not a problem, come here! I was able to find a few records that I've been looking and bought one today. Definitely hope to be back soon! Parking can be a little tough especially during busy times. The record store is tucked right in the middle so you might miss it if you're coming from the other side of University Drive. read more

Mobius Records is the fourth vinyl shop I've visited in the past week and absolutely the best out of all of them. The people are kind and the store is inviting. This store is nicely lit, clean, and has a lot of newer records. Of the four shops, this shop was the only one that had the band I was looking for... and almost all of their albums! The new location is perfect for them, and every time I've talked to an employee there, they've always been happy to help and gave some great recommendations for other music. If it's your first time coming here, expect the place to have mostly new records rather than used. They have both and sometimes you'll find some gems in the used section, but anytime there's a new release or a repress, Mobius has and will be my go to store. read more

Very well organized, neat and orderly. Pricier than RTX but better quality vinyls. They have a section of records that are $3 and below and you can find some gems in there. They also sell more current albums and prices can be $20-$40. They have new copies of high demand bands like Led Zeppelin and The Smiths so unfortunately those are going to cost at least $20. I managed to get a Rolling Stoned album for $5, a Simon & Garfunkel album for $3, and a The Who album for $5. The man working was very approachable and helpful. He also had a pretty sick beard, so that's always a plus. I thought parking would be a problem because Main St is chaotic but there's a parking garage directly in front of Möbius. There's also a cute listening station. Overall, very well spaced out and neat, nice ambience, highly recommend a visit. read more

So today was my first time and not my last time in this store. First the guy working there is extremely nice and you can ask him about 99% of the records and he'll tell you about the artist and album. It's actually impressive. He was also very welcoming and extremely helpful. When you first walk in check out the shirts to the left there is an awesome selection, if I could id buy all the shirts in my size, he also had some very unknown band tees so that was cool and at great prices, oh and the Mobius Record shirts have some variety which is also very cool. Then you'll see the patches and pins, all cheap and must haves. Then the record selection. Too much to say. So many records I thought were no longer around but there they are at affordable prices. Honestly I'm never going to another record store. Mobius Records is the best record store in all of northern Virginia and DC. So don't hesitate, go. Usually I dont feel so strongly about record stores but this is an amazing place, @gain, a must go. You'll never go to another record store. read more
