I recently visited the Gathering Grounds coffee shop in University Mall - and noticed the sign for "The Amazing Comic Shop," so, as I check out all comic and gaming stores - I knew I had to come back and check it out. It's located in an alley way of sorts - behind Gathering Grounds and other shops directly facing the front parking lot. The first thing you notice walking in - is the super cool, close-to-life size Silver Surfer! I need one of those in my house! The silver surfer is so cool! Then again so is this store. They have every comic, and then even more. The selection is "amazing!" If you want books of comics from retro eras, you'll want to go here. They also have lots of games, as well as related merchandise. Prices are competitive. Great staff works here. All of their employees have been friendly and helpful. Wow - this a fun place to visit with its extensive display of Marvel comic books and knowledgable staff. I came here on a Saturday afternoon in late October 2021 looking for a Shang-Chi comic book. Some of the comic books brought a wave of nostalgia from my childhood. They also have a small manga section and supplies for Dungeons and Dragons. The proximity to the GMU Fairfax campus (just south of it on Braddock Road) in the University Mall complex (near the Giant supermarket) is no accident. The staff person on Saturday afternoon explained the history of the Shang-Chi character and showed how the image from the modern Disney movie differed a lot from the 1970s version of the character (which had a very different facial appearance). I would recommend a visit here - and if you're interested in the history of any comic books, be sure to talk with the staff people who are experts in the collections! read more

Found this cool shop after attending a movie b-day around the corner. Greeted as soon as we walked in and enjoyed my conversation with the Owner? about the old days and what the LCS used to be like. Read some of the other reviews, our experience with customer interaction was great. He had a lot going on with a short shipment, which he was handling, but still was friendly. The Store itself was super clean and organized. Plenty of space to move around, nice displays and easy to maneuver around. The clear space does come at a price which is lack of boxes & boxes of back issues (new stuff is nicely displayed), but that does seem to be the direction that the LCS is going. They do have some back issues and I did pick out a couple, one which I really needed. Overall enjoyed our visit and our finds. read more

Ok, this shop is slick and modern, but not nearly as amazing as an old school collector might hope for...the axiom: "with great power comes responsibility" comes to mind here. Now, when I say responsibility, I'm talking about the responsibility of a comic book shop to stalk Golden and Silver Age gems. Of course, I get it that there is only so much space, and you've got to go where the market leads you, which means variants and glossy moderns. But when a comic book shop sacrifices some of its long boxes for figures and toys, I feel another superhero dies a slow death from the kryptonite that is pop culture. Now, don't get me wrong, this is a very cool shop, and it would be the perfect place to introduce my kid to the modern comic book genre... I just wish it had held onto a little more history of the Golden and Silver Age Comics. read more

I discovered this place by chance, strike that fate. I am a comic book collector. I'd say nerd, but no, more like a subject matter expert. It is so nice seeing so many other subject matter experts in one place. We can talk about everything MTG related. We can talk about Marvel and DC and Image, and WildStorm. We can talk about Sandman, and Pokémon. We can talk about Wade Wilson an Deadpool. We can talk about D&D, and Robotech and the difference between Sinbad the Comedian and Sinbad fighting a stop motion cyclops. This place makes me happy. Thank you for bringing you love of everything truly cool and allowing me to pass on those feelings of discovery and wonderment to my kids. This place is hard to find. It's in an outdoor/strip mall, but not visible from the parking lot. The store was clean and well-organized, so it gets a second star. Don't expect a greeting or customer service when you walk in. Every person that walked in during my visit had to greet the employee first and received a half-hearted acknowledgement while the guy watched Sopranos on his laptop. No "do you need any help?" "First time here?" "Anything you're looking for?" Just Comic Book Guy-like apathy. Beyond that, they are overpriced. 80's and 90's back issues are $3 each, with no bulk deal, and their selection is sorely lacking. I spend about $200 a week on comics and all about supporting LCS's, which I drove out half and hour to visit in this case. These guys must rely on local comic addicts, who don't care about customer service or outright rudeness, because they're just there to get their fix quick and get out. Which is unfortunately the situation at a lot of Local Comic Stores. If you can stand waiting a week after books come out to read them, I would suggest an online retailer over them. You usually can get deep discounts and cheap shipping. The only thing "Amazing" about this place is that they're still in business. Let's see if they're still around post-pandemic. read more

Picked up more than 6 comics for our young Grands as we introduce them to comic books. The store was busy but plenty of room to bourse. We traveled over 4o miles BUT worth it! My 9 year old daughter and I went in a few weeks ago, and we were completely ignored by the guy working behind the counter. We were the only customers in the shop and didn't get a "hello", "hi", let alone a "welcome". I was looking for a LCS to start a weekly subscription with, but after being ignored by staff I knew this wasn't the place to do this. I had been to the shop once a few years ago and got the same treatment, but gave them another shot to see if things had changed. They hadn't. I did one walk around the shop before leaving because I didn't feel welcomed. Yesterday, I drove an hour away to a shop in Annapolis Maryland because I knew the people there were kind and I would be welcomed when I came through the door. The Amazing Comic Shop lives up to its name! This is our main comic shop and we stop by weekly. We are always greeted and the atmosphere is very friendly and helpful. The folks that work there are happy to engage you in a chat or just let your browse. They aren't pushy like other shops which makes the experience much more comfortable and a joy to come back. They have a great selection of both trades and collectibles, we've always been able to find what we need here. The store is modern and clean and very well organized. I'm not rating the shop itself with 2 stars. Just a particular experience that left me irate enough to not wishing to come back. It was a month ago but I felt the need to write this now since I didn't know it had a Yelp page. I had bought 3 graphic novels of the Rebirth series. I kept my receipt though: last time I lost it but the lady was super awesome in offering just an exchange since the book wasn't used. The reason I brought it back is because I realized I had the same volume already (I have over 100 graphic novels and comics so of course my dumbass might end up buying an extra lmao) But back to the point, I had brought my receipt. And the books, still in the plastic bag that came from the job to the store. I initially tried to return it the week before but there was a new cashier that day I came in who didn't know how to do returns or wasn't trained on it. This is fine, and I came back not too long after. And this is where I got irritated. Told them that I was returning and the guy first told me that "oh why did you wanna return....we normally don't process returns", and when I said I knew of their return policy he began to look at my receipt. Claimed the books looked worn or read, in a patronizing tone....mind you, the graphic novels did not have a bent cover, pages and were in the bag with the receipt since I bought it. Not really coming back because of that and also because they literally have no sales ever going on. For books or anything else. Even higher end stores like BAM, Barnes and Noble have fantastic deals with a similar selection. And from where I live, smaller businesses like Flashback and Painted Visions are cheaper too. The best thing about this shop is the vast selection, but other than that, even amazon has prices alongside the other stores I've been at. read more

Last two times I've been there the staff has been nice; I haven't been harassed about browsing the manga either, likewise there is more merchandise, especially novelty goods which is always a plus. Great selection, helpful staff. I usually go in knowing exactly what I'm looking for but not where to find it on the shelves. They're always great with helping me. My only complaint would be that they're not super chatty with occasional customers - they seem to save the friendly banter for the regulars. Maybe it's that I often bring my toddler in with me and they're afraid of her grabby hands messy up their store (which is fair). I am a 12 year Army artillery veteran that has been collecting comic books for over 35 years. As I have traveled throughout the United States I have never seen a comic book shop limit or put a limit on you can buy of a certain comic. I have been here and also spend about two to $300 a month for the last several months here. I have also bought their books that are jacked up in price A month later because I don't have it in my collection. I do a lot of grading for my collections through the comic grading system and submit about 60 books a month. I also read the books .Their reasoning is that they cannot sell you more because it will be sold out but the whole point of the subscription service is to have the book reserved. That is why I have a comic book Subscription with Game On Comics in Vienna Virginia and their discounts are better. Louis will go out his way to help you find a book that you want and sometimes he will give you a good deal. Also if you are a subscriber with them you get a free ice cold soda when you go in and pick up your books. Also if you are a subscriber any book on the racks are 10 percent off. At Camille: for someone who has been continuing to buy $200-$300 a month at your store is that the way you treat your repeat customers and spend a lot of money at your store? And by the way if others want the books they can do subscription through you right ? Also your subscription service is not anywhere near what others better shops like game on are offering. Have you ever heard of Cgc? I usually prescreen 60 books every couple months because I am a collector of high-grade comics. Apparently you did not get the point. I have nothing but good things to say about this shop. I have been gradually rebuilding my comic and graphic novel collection for a few years, and the employees have been very helpful with offering suggestions for new reads, (Image, The New 52) and they have helped me broaden my horizons. My compliments especially to Katie, Camille, and Nicole. They always have great input and answer my questions. Honestly though, they're all a good group of people. Their prices are not high, as they are based on the price of the books. Overall, I highly recommend them. Also, right next to my house, and GMU. So great location! ****Update**** I don't really understand the naysayers on these reviews. Many people are complaining that they cannot read comics in store. Comics tend to hold and often increase dramatically in value, so naturally I'd be somewhat careful of customers potentially bending or creasing comics, especially as the proprietor of a business. Older comics are CGC graded, so constantly opening them and flipping pages is risky, especially with a first printing. Often, I'll buy two, one to seal, and one to read. Bottom line, pay them and get one! They're not that expensive. To those who mention price hikes, are you sure it's not a variant cover? I picked up several Captain America issues, and a few were slightly higher because of the cover art, or because it was an older first printing. If not, the prices are usually set by the company that publishes them. I'm also impressed that they have stocked up on more novelty items, they've been a go to lately when I need to find a gift for a friend. ****End Rant**** read more

I won't pretend to know a ton about comics. I do know that as a noob, I felt totally comfortable and welcomed both in store and on the phone. The women working were helpful and kind and checked in with me numerous times while I browsed. Although I didn't meet the guidelines as a subscriber, the worker was polite and gave me all the permanent information in written format. From the untrained eye, the shop seemed clean and well-organized. It was bright and inviting although a bit hard to find as you can't see it from the parking lots. If you park near the Giant, its a straight shot between the buildings. read more

A couple years ago I walked in here having not been in a comic shop since the days of 'Burke Centre Comics' in the 90's. Was curious about the newer books out and was recommended 'Thor: God Butcher' (which was the shite!) Over the years I've grown to know the staff and they make recommendations based on the writers and titles I read. This may be a normal occurrence but it's one that I really appreciate. I love finding something in my box (which I'm always told I don't have to keep) is something really great to which I question if mild telepathy is in play.... It doesn't bother me that they don't have tons of back issues as anything I've asked for that they don't have, has been ordered or put on order for me. As a kid I remember going into Burke Centre Comics and I could talk to the people there as a fan of comics with likeminded people and leave feeling happy to share that with someone. After my regular comic shop had to close I was faced with the difficult ask of finding a replacement source for my favorite hobby. Whatever my new shop would be it would be faced with the difficult challenge of matching the level of service I had come to expect from the old shop. So what I and my friend did was we interviewed several stores in the surrounding area, by visiting and evaluating each of them. We evaluated each store on service, accessibility, appearance, and selection. As I'm sure you've guessed by this point. The clear winner was The Amazing Comic Shop. Camile, Katie and James are always friendly, professional and fun to talk about whatever is going on in the comic-verse. The store is always super clean, a beautiful store really that would make any newbie feel welcomed. As much as I loved all my previous stores, none can match the store presence of this comic shop. It's been over a year since I made my choice to make this my go to store and I couldn't be happier. Ignore the temper tantrum reviews. If you want a store that will take care of that four-color fix and be a great place to bring someone new into the fold; this the store you want. 'nuff said read more

I have been a subscriber at this location for years, and I can tell you that the store gets better with each name change. The shop is continuously being updated (along with the whole mall) so it is one of the best places to buy comics, with a lot of selection and nice employees. I've been to every competitor in the area and would rank it #1 even though I do like a few of the others a lot. If you have been to any of the annual Free Comic Book Day celebrations you can get a taste of why. In response to the recent 1 star review -- I was actually the person behind you in line that day and witnessed the whole exchange. I understand where you are coming from but I appreciated what the Manager did because it allowed me to purchase a copy of that issue (Divinity #4) which I would otherwise not have gotten since I arrived after you. I typically get to the store within an hour of opening on Wednesdays and yet that would not have been fast enough. Rarely are they out of something I wanted to get, due to that specific policy. Do you post a complaint on the Ticketmaster yelp because you can only buy two concert tickets instead of all remaining concert tickets? read more

Great selection of kid friendly comics with plenty for Mom and Dad too. On our first visit, we picked up 2 for the tiny humans and the most recent Walking Dead and purchased a few of the blind bag keychains as well. For the kids of course (ok so maybe Mom has a Deadpool on her backpack now as well). The staff was super friendly and helpful and even let the kiddos swap out their keychain if it wasn't a princess they liked. I'm sure pricing was closer to MSRP than Amazon but it's nice to support local businesses and I got tired of Amazon shipping my graphic novels badly and bending them.
