2D restaurant offers a cute aesthetic, but the service is lacking. We came on a Saturday night with no reservation, at first we were told there were no tables, and we could order to go. Once we mentioned we were only stopping in for drinks and desserts, we were offered a table. It took a while for someone to take our order. I could tell other tables were annoyed with the slow service as well. The place inside is pretty small. We tried the viet coffee and the hanoi affogato which both were quite mediocre in flavor. The kids loved the wiggle wiggle dessert since they got to decorate the cat. They did not like the taste of the cat pudding but loved the fruit and mochi donut. I'm not sure I would come back to try the food.
Such amazing food - I love their chicken sandwiches and bowls. But more than the food, I love how the owner does such great philanthropy in the area and hosts all these thoughtful events for the community. Each year on National Taiwan Day (10/10) they have these crazy deals that are so worth. Be on the lookout! This year their proceeds went towards the disaster fund in Taiwan. We also go to make our own mochi and heard how the owner was teaching kids in the nearby schools for lunar new year too!! If I had to give some critique, the drinks here are not my favorite but the food and service more than make up for it! Very family friendly and great place to catch up with friends.
I saw this place on some Food Network show and knowing we were going to Chicago soon, looked it up. This restaurant is unique on the inside. There are about 8 tables, so I made a reservation to make sure we got in. Our reservation was at noon on a Friday, and there was only one guy serving the entire place. He didn't even take our order until 12:25pm. Our water didn't arrive till 12:45 pm. Once we ordered, the food came out relatively fast. The spicy cucumber salad was of ample size and VERY spicy to us. The fried chicken for the sandwiches I believe are thighs and the breading was great. It's just that the chicken pieces were small on my sandwich, but bigger on others. The fries and the onion rings are fantastic. We all (party of five) had never tried a Mochi donut so we ordered three different ones. We liked them all. I'm not a donut fan, but these might convert me. This is a one and done place for us because of the service. It is worth going once for the ambiance, onion rings, fries, and chicken. And I might order take-out next time.
This place is too cute. It's literally made for social media post like Instagram and TikTok. The food is almost secondary. Now we got here when it was empty. I don't know how its gonna look like when it's filled with people. But for now we have the place all to ourselves. We had both ube drinks both very pretty - nice. I prefer not to mix my matcha ube, so I can taste each distinct flavor same with the ube coffe. One gripe is it's serve on plastic tumblers which doesn't photograph as well.
Definitely recommend making a reservation to get a seat inside. The view when you walk in is trippy with just seeing black and white. I love how the plates of food are full of color! We started off with chef recommended potatoes croquettes. Boy, these things were light and pillowy! The sauces were yummy. We also each got entrees. I went with the Chicago Tribune recommended fried chicken sandwich. Bread was super fluffy, coleslaw gave a lil sweetness, and pineapple chili sauce chicken gave a lil zing! What a great sammie!! Kevin got the chicken platter which came with 2 sides, cabbage and rice. He also got the pineapple chili but his was hotter since the chicken was more coated than my sandwich. He loved the mango jasmine tea and opted for the sweeter option. We will definitely be back when we come to Chicagoland again! See you soon! Jake and kevin
Food was decent for a more "instagramable" establishment - tried their fried chicken curry don and was pleasantly surprised by their curry. Enjoyed their addition of minced meat into the sauce. I got my food to-go since the restaurant was slightly hectic and they seemed to be understaffed. The entrance is really tiny and not a great first view by the customers. It felt like we were being pushed / kept out.
A cool and unique 2D comic dining experience in black and white. I felt like I walked inside of a comic book. A fun place to come and visit with family, friends, solo date. My server Alexander was attentive and friendly. I arrived when the door opened to beat the crowd of people that had reservations. I was instantly seated, handed a menu with a nice tall cold glass of water. Alexander was even so kind to let me try some of their chicken. I wasn't a big fan of the flavor but it was crispy and cooked well. I was more impressed with the art dimensional of this place. This is a must hidden gem to come and visit. Great to take some photo shoots for social media. I just ended up ordering the lemon blossom fizz lemonade and a chocolate mochi donut. Both were a delicious treat. My total was $16.19. The prices are not displayed on the menu and I was shocked to see on my bill that a glass of lemonade was almost $10.00. Overall the experience was a 10/10.
The doughnuts were good - "loved them all except the wreath one. The snowman doughnut was fire!! Our plan was to eat in, but a warm winter in Chicago has not done the restaurant well and it was just a little dingy. I have sympathy because I am sure that it is hard to keep up with an all white restaurant. However, you chose to be an all white restaurant so... We will try again. I'm giving some grace for a holiday week.
I came here on my way to the pride fest and it turned out to be a really nice place to stop by! When we first walked in, we were greeted by the employee who informed us that it was short staffed and just them at the front. I appreciated the heads up and we just got drinks to go but they let us sit inside anyways. The design of this place is unlike anything you see and I love how you feel like you are in a comic. The boba was pretty good and super refreshing. I do think the boba was not as fresh and a little too mushy but nothing bad.
Tried the food this time, which was actually pretty delicious! The fried chicken was perfectly crunchy, juicy, and well seasoned. We got the Taiwanese fried chicken and curry over rice and it was yummy! I would recommend. I would come back here and order from the food menu again in the future!
Coming to the 2d restaurant was one of the highlights of my chicago trip!! I highly recommend getting a reservation for the meal experience. This comes with a drink, side salad, main course, dessert, and a photoshoot at the end! I chose to get a milk tea, asian crunch chili sandwich, and we all picked a different mochi donut at the end. Everything tasted amazing (I wish the food looked 2d too) and I was really satisfied at the end. The photo experience then had us pose in a van outside and peeking around various doors and corners of the restaurant. It was super cute! I would definitely recommend coming here to everyone. I was scared it would be a bit gimmicky but the food and experience were all great. They also provided coloring sheets as a fun activity while you wait or after you finish your food. I had such a good time :)
We had a reservation and were seated right away when we arrived. We were surprised by how small the place was. We ordered a couple of the fried chicken dishes and a salad. The chicken wasn't edible--I was honestly worried I'd get sick if I ate it. My son ate a little of his, but we didn't touch the salad. Although the decor is cool, the place didn't feel very clean. The only thing We really liked was the old Subaru van outside where customers can take pictures. I honestly can't recommend this place at all, even though the 2D decor idea is unique and makes for good instagram pictures. read more

If you're looking for an instagrammable date with friends and decent eats, 2D is a great option! We had a server take a little photo tour of our family and the pictures turned out great. There are props to borrow and multiple spots to take a fun photo op. As for food- I had the chicken sandwich with the sweet and spicy sauce. The chicken wasn't flirty juicy but I liked the sauce - it's not very spicy. My favorite dish was the wasabi fries. The price for food was okay- but I think you're paying for the ambience! Street parking, small space, and slow - ish service. I recommend getting reservations regardless of the size of your group. read more
Service: 1/5 Ambience: 2/5 Food: 4/5 A really disorganized place. A small place with no room for people to wait for their to-go orders. I showed up with a couple friends and half the tables were empty but they said we wouldn't be able to be seated for 2.5 hours because we didn't have a reservation. We ordered to-go after which they failed to give us an estimated wait time or a place to wait. We wanted to look around at some of the decor but told us that we had to wait in the foyer that was outside the restaurant. When picking up the order, they forgot to give us the mochi donut ordered until I specifically asked for it since I pointed out they didn't have it in the bag. Good food, disorganized service, unique ambiance. The food is good: plant-based chicken makes for messy and delicious sandwiches. Each has a unique combination of sauces and vegetable toppings and they come together successfully. Desserts are fun as well. If I could rate 2d on food alone, it would get 4 or 5 stars, but alas... Ambiance: unique and fun, though it looks better in pictures than in reality. Even though the restaurant opened in 2022, in under 3 years, it already looks old. Tables are yellowing. Rust stains are visible on the patio. In any case, it's a gimmick: an enjoyable one, but still one that feels like a distraction, when no distraction is needed. Service: disorganized, slow, stressed out, and simply bad. Nope. Bad night? Maybe, but read other reviews. I'm not the only one! Random thought: is a 2-dimensional restaurant really 2-dimensional in a 3D world or is it merely 2D when reduced back into a plane through the magic of photography? The world may never know! (Actually, the world does know and this isn't very profound at all, sorry.) Overall: 2 to 3 stars. I don't know if I'd return. It's a shame: it could easily be better. The donut gave extra star to this review - Oreo donut is absolute and must try! Lemonades are very picturesque but quite sweet. We had to wait for our drinks over 25 min as we ordered a la carte while everyone was doing tasting menu, when sandwiches arrived they were cold although the flavors were good and interesting toping with good level of heat, it was disappointing that it was cold. After some time my eyes got tired of all white and black ambience and bright light. read more

We had a great experience here! The food was amazing, we got the chicken teriyaki and salmon teriyaki bowls which had a delicious sauce. We loved the mango jasmine green tea boba. The staff was very welcoming and friendly and accommodating to food allergies, and the art was so cool and unique. I'm excited to come back to use my punch card! read more

This Taiwanese fried chicken/boba/mochi donut restaurant is SOOO CUTE and delicious!!! I love that it's run by a taiwanese couple! I got the spicy rooster sandwich (w/ fried chicken and korean hot sauce), fries, and filipino ube viet coffee. My friends loved their viet coffee, milk tea w/ boba, ube and matcha mochi donut (the matcha flavor was so strong to me) ! I am ready to come back and try more things on the menu :) The jelly cat is so cute too; you can use edible ink to draw on them! If you post a picture of it on insta and tag them, you can be entered to win a $50 gift card. Our flavor of the jelly cat was thai tea :) When I was with my friends, one of them mentioned how I'm now yelp elite! I then mentioned how I wasn't going to get a mochi donut because I've had them before at other places and they all taste the same. The owner heard me and later, he brought out a Lychee mochi donut for me to try for free!! He explained that he uses tofu instead of eggs in the donut, and I feel like the mochi donut here tastes more chewy than other places! He then told us that he uses tofu from his taiwanese friend's shop, and also shared that he and his wife drew everything on the walls. The drawings were inspired by their honeymoon in Paris that never happened in June 2020 - I hope they are eventually able to go! read more

The wiggle jelly coconut cat is the best item on the menu and priced well since it's an experience. The mochi donuts are tasty except the icing on the donuts are wayyyy too sweet. It's accommodating to a western palate rather. The drinks are quite tasty if you really like coffee but my friend ordered the creme brûlée pudding drink and it ended up just tasting like caramel coffee which wasn't wrong but just not her favorite. And the ambiance was just so quirky with 2D drawings everywhere. I enjoy that they update the background multiple times rather than just keep it the same forever. read more
When walking in, I was greeted by the "please wait to be seated sign" and then was notified to walk up to the counter to place an order. I ordered the cucumber mojito seltzer and the small seasoned fries. This place is very cute and definitely a good spot to take a date. I would probably not get the fries again just because they were nothing special but the mojito seltzer I 1000% recommend. My friend got the jasmine green boba tea and she also enjoyed it. Chicken was cooked well, juicy and crispy, but nothing out of the ordinary. Sauce was sweet, so it was like a vinaigrette salad on the sandwich. Got the banana caphe but it didn't look anything like the picture and tasted more like chocolate milk. The Jello cat didn't have much flavor and was almost chalky. Mochi donuts were pretty good, especially the coffee one. Worth trying the place for the experience but wouldn't go again. If you're looking for a photo op then this is your place. read more

This is definitely a one of a kind café! We were met by the cutest wall art going into the café and the menu is conveniently posted outside. We were amazed by it all as we walked in. We didn't know what to look at since every single item and art was interesting. We quickly found a table outside since the ones inside were all taken. We also decided to place our orders online since there was a line at the window. I ordered a Vietnamese coffee, which is their most popular drink. The rest of my group ordered mochi donuts with their own drinks and they all bought a cute tote as a souvenir. My drink was very very strong and I was definitely wired and full of energy the rest of the day. The mochi donuts were good and fresh. Service was good and the girl who brought us our items was nice. This place it's very instagramable and definitely picture worthy since it's very different compare to most mochi donut places . We got an Oreo donut and a matcha donut and they were ok, nothing out of the ordinary. The service was not the best , the hostess was super rude and seemed so annoyed when asked a question ( just asked her how to order to go and she just seemed so upset) . The rating was mainly for the uniqueness of the decorations since it's a place worth checking out . read more

Lovely 2d Restaurant. Got the Ube and Vietnamese caphe which was soooo good! Recommend those two for beverages. Had the fried chicken, they have a plant based alternative as well so vegans don't worry . They have couple options in Mochi. And at the end, they have a photo op too!! They have a couple of prop u can use to click pics and have a collage printed out as well. Good spot to hangout with friends and I highly recommend reservations!! I like creativity and 2D is a creative restaurant from the decor to some of the food items. But creativity needs a good execution and that's where the restaurant lacks. Customer service is abysmal. You walk in and there is the tiniest place to stand if there is anyone in front of you. There were a couple ordering which took forever. I didn't make reservation and I was told that next availability was in 3 hours. Really ? This is not Alinea so maybe call down on the unnecessary wait especially because lots of tables were wide open as we waited for our food, cat pudding and donuts to be done. Speaking of which, I was told that "we don't really like to do orders to go but if that's what you want." What kinda response is that ?! There was only one server who kept going back and forth with food items. So maybe hire more people especially when it is a Saturday. While waiting many people came and left because there was no host to greet them. Then the food arrived and problem no.1 with the food is that they got the order wrong as I ordered 2 of the cat puddings and only received so had to go back for that which they fixed. Also I ordered 3 donuts but received 6 random donuts! Problem no. 2 is that the food is just average. Fries were not good. Chicken was okay. The cat puddings were not sweet or had a distinct flavor. And the strawberry donut was flat out terrible. My son who loves a donut with frosting wasn't even interested. The cinnamon sugar donut however was good. So go for the experience but don't expect the best of service or food. read more

I was pretty excited when I found out there was a 2D restaurant in Chicago since I was visiting. It's towards the Northern side of Chicago and I heard it opened earlier this year. As soon as we see the front of the cafe we took out our phones and started taking photos. Since it was December, the restaurant had Christmas decorations. The cafe was pretty spacious with many tables. There is also outside dining but due to the winter weather, it's closed. However, you can still get some photos of the 2D van outside. We went around mid morning and it wasn't too busy. But there are some items on the menu that are only served at lunch hours 11am (e.g. chicken sandwich). So we just got some drinks and my friends got some seasonal mochi donuts. In our experience, the drinks and food are not that good, sadly. Refer to my photos of the drinks we ordered. The drinks tasted odd, don't think some of the ingredients mix well with each other. One of the mochi donuts (snowman donut) took about 15-20 minutes to make..why? I'm happy with the photos we got, but disappointed with the drinks and food. It's definitely insta worthy. read more
This was such a fun place to go! It's a little small, so today they were booked solide from 12-4pm...so definitely recommend making a reservation. I had the spicy rooster (with Korean hot sauce) and it was extremely tasty, but also very messy. The seasoned fried were amazing!! Definitely get those. I also had a strawberry milk, which was nostalgic and sweet. And lastly, I finished with the strawberry sprinkle mochi donut. It was a different texture than I've had before, but very good. I got to try the Ube mochi donut and although I didn't really taste the ube, it was yummy. My favorite part was the photo tour that you get if you spend $25. This place has so many photo opportunities, so it's just going around the restaurant and someone taking pictures of you. So it's such a fun, unique novelty experience! read more
Came across this hipster concept while looking for new places we had never been to yet, and had an interesting time dining here. It's certainly one of Chicago's most unique restaurants. 2d is like some kind of experiment, trying to see how strange a restaurant can be and still have people coming to visit. Good for those always posting on social media. You can find lots of things to take pictures in front of and post. Basically it's a place for Instagramming. It also happens to have a food menu. Their thing here is doughnuts and sandwiches. Has a lot of mochi doughnuts. These can also be used to make sandwiches. Get the Plant Base Meals to be the best value on a few items. It's about $17 for one of these. Each of these meals is plant based. It has a tea, sandwich, and side. All these compliment each other. I had the Citrus Green Tea. Good and refreshing. I had the Classic What The Chicken Sandwich. Basically it has a sandwich with a vegan chicken patty. This comes with a side. Have fun looking at all the drawings inside. It's a trip. The cartoon drawings are the most interesting part about, it but don't forget about the food and get some cool pictures of the food, the inside, or whatever. read more

The food is mediocre, this place is only good for pictures and interior art. Overall experience was a bit disappointing due to many things being sold out by 4pm and the strawberry milk tasting spoiled, so I personally would not recommend this place to my friends or come back. I came around 4:20pm to try the viral cat jelly but unfortunately they ran out within the first hour of opening. All the special flavored donuts were sold out too, so I had to order strawberry and Oreo mochi donut, which were actually decent. I ordered strawberry milk and it was heavily artificial tasting with a funky after taste (milk was not fresh). The fried chicken burger was average and it was funny how they said no to cutting the burger in half when we asked. It was nice to look around at the 2D art and there was a small room for pictures. Fun for the first 5 minutes but the food and service could have been better. read more

Very interesting environment, ok taste. I love the artistic nature of the place, but was a little underwhelmed by the donuts themselves. I've seen mochi donuts all over social media, so of course, I have been curious to try them, and just so happened 2D Restaurant popped up nearby when I was in the area. Now, I LOVE mochi. It is probably my favorite sweet treat. But mochi donuts are not exactly mochi as I was expecting it. It's more of a hybrid between mochi and a cake donut. A tiny bit chewier than a donut, but more batter-like than mochi. It wasn't unpleasant, but I fail to see how it's worth $4 a donut. I get it, though. You're paying for the kitsch and the rent of Lakeview, not necessarily for what you're buying. You know the thing about social media...if it's instagrammable, it's probably not as exciting as it LOOKS in images. If your goal is to get some neat pics, come here. If your goal is to get down on some donuts...well...there are many other places that do it much better. The hot cocoa was good, and I was curious to try some of the other beverages like the fizzes or maybe a latte. So I might come back. I came on a Friday morning around 9-11 and it was not very trafficked, so it was a great time to work on my laptop for a bit. Honestly, I didn't pay any more here than I would have at another cafe so it has a leg up on any other place just for the novelty factor. I appreciated the friendly staff, but found it a little off-putting to have to place my own order on an app. Despite there being a promotional offer on the sign outside I wasn't able to find it on the app, and I am one of those people who does not like how automated and depersonalized things are getting with self-serve robotics everywhere you go.
