I showed up with a couple friends and half the tables were empty but they said we wouldn't be able to be seated for 2.5 hours because we didn't have a reservation. We ordered to-go after which they failed to give us an estimated wait time or a place to wait. We wanted to look around at some of the decor but told us that we had to wait in the foyer that was outside the restaurant. When picking up the order, they forgot to give us the mochi donut ordered until I specifically asked for it since I pointed out they didn't have it in the bag. We had a reservation and were seated right away when we arrived. We were surprised by how small the place was. We ordered a couple of the fried chicken dishes and a salad. The chicken wasn't edible--I was honestly worried I'd get sick if I ate it. My son ate a little of his, but we didn't touch the salad. Although the decor is cool, the place didn't feel very clean. The only thing We really liked was the old Subaru van outside where customers can take pictures. I honestly can't recommend this place at all, even though the 2D decor idea is unique and makes for good instagram pictures. read more

Friendly service! Came in with 4 excited tweens and they loved the interior, they especially loved the outdoor "play" area with a van, motorcycle and old school phone. Lots of laughs. Food was fresh. Each has a unique combination of sauces and vegetable toppings and they come together successfully. Desserts are fun as well. If I could rate 2d on food alone, it would get 4 or 5 stars, but alas... Ambiance: unique and fun, though it looks better in pictures than in reality. Even though the restaurant opened in 2022, in under 3 years, it already looks old. Tables are yellowing. Rust stains are visible on the patio. In any case, it's a gimmick: an enjoyable one, but still one that feels like a distraction, when no distraction is needed. Service: disorganized, slow, stressed out, and simply bad. Nope. Bad night? Maybe, but read other reviews. I'm not the only one! Random thought: is a 2-dimensional restaurant really 2-dimensional in a 3D world or is it merely 2D when reduced back into a plane through the magic of photography? The world may never know! The donut gave extra star to this review - Oreo donut is absolute and must try! Lemonades are very picturesque but quite sweet. We had to wait for our drinks over 25 min as we ordered a la carte while everyone was doing tasting menu, when sandwiches arrived they were cold although the flavors were good and interesting toping with good level of heat, it was disappointing that it was cold. It's good. It surprises you because the food was tasty and came out with some nice flair. They were very accommodating and even provided free donuts! The environment is definitely unique, but it feels like it's missing something. There are some contrasting elements, but they were the lunar new year decorations. This is definitely a one of a kind café! We were met by the cutest wall art going into the café and the menu is conveniently posted outside. We were amazed by it all as we walked in. We didn't know what to look at since every single item and art was interesting. We quickly found a table outside since the ones inside were all taken. We also decided to place our orders online since there was a line at the window. I ordered a Vietnamese coffee, which is their most popular drink. The rest of my group ordered mochi donuts with their own drinks and they all bought a cute tote as a souvenir. This Taiwanese fried chicken/boba/mochi donut restaurant is SOOO CUTE and delicious!!! I love that it's run by a taiwanese couple! I got the spicy rooster sandwich (w/ fried chicken and korean hot sauce), fries, and filipino ube viet coffee. My friends loved their viet coffee, milk tea w/ boba, ube and matcha mochi donut (the matcha flavor was so strong to me) ! I am ready to come back and try more things on the menu :) The jelly cat is so cute too; you can use edible ink to draw on them! If you post a picture of it on insta and tag them, you can be entered to win a $50 gift card. Our flavor of the jelly cat was thai tea :) When I was with my friends, one of them mentioned how I'm now yelp elite! I then mentioned how I wasn't going to get a mochi donut because I've had them before at other places and they all taste the same. The owner heard me and later, he brought out a Lychee mochi donut for me to try for free!! He explained that he uses tofu instead of eggs in the donut, and I feel like the mochi donut here tastes more chewy than other places! He then told us that he uses tofu from his taiwanese friend's shop, and also shared that he and his wife drew everything on the walls. The wiggle jelly coconut cat is the best item on the menu and priced well since it's an experience. The mochi donuts are tasty except the icing on the donuts are wayyyy too sweet. It's accommodating to a western palate rather. The drinks are quite tasty if you really like coffee but my friend ordered the creme brûlée pudding drink and it ended up just tasting like caramel coffee which wasn't wrong but just not her favorite. Checked this place out for the first time on a Thursday for lunch as I've heard many good things since their opening. Placed a To-go order for a rooster chicken sandwich and a Vietnamese Caphe (coffee). Both were underwhelming. I didn't think the chicken sandwich flavors complimented each other well making me feel as though I was eating each item separately. The Viet coffee felt like the ratio was way off and reminded me of skim milk instead of coffee. The design of the building is great for pictures as it is one of a kind in its concept. The service from the staff was also very good as they were attentive immediately after walking in the door. I didn't do the 2d experience since I just wanted to see the place and try the food which might've been my mistake. May try again but with a different drink and the mochi donut instead. read more

Got the banana caphe but it didn't look anything like the picture and tasted more like chocolate milk. The Jello cat didn't have much flavor and was almost chalky. I like creativity and 2D is a creative restaurant from the decor to some of the food items. But creativity needs a good execution and that's where the restaurant lacks. Customer service is abysmal. You walk in and there is the tiniest place to stand if there is anyone in front of you. There were a couple ordering which took forever. I didn't make reservation and I was told that next availability was in 3 hours. Really ? This is not Alinea so maybe call down on the unnecessary wait especially because lots of tables were wide open as we waited for our food, cat pudding and donuts to be done. Speaking of which, I was told that "we don't really like to do orders to go but if that's what you want." What kinda response is that ?! There was only one server who kept going back and forth with food items. So maybe hire more people especially when it is a Saturday. While waiting many people came and left because there was no host to greet them. Then the food arrived and problem no.1 with the food is that they got the order wrong as I ordered 2 of the cat puddings and only received so had to go back for that which they fixed. Also I ordered 3 donuts but received 6 random donuts! Problem no. 2 is that the food is just average. Fries were not good. Chicken was okay. The cat puddings were not sweet or had a distinct flavor. And the strawberry donut was flat out terrible. My son who loves a donut with frosting wasn't even interested. The cinnamon sugar donut however was good. I was pretty excited when I found out there was a 2D restaurant in Chicago since I was visiting. It's towards the Northern side of Chicago and I heard it opened earlier this year. As soon as we see the front of the cafe we took out our phones and started taking photos. Since it was December, the restaurant had Christmas decorations. The cafe was pretty spacious with many tables. There is also outside dining but due to the winter weather, it's closed. However, you can still get some photos of the 2D van outside. We went around mid morning and it wasn't too busy. But there are some items on the menu that are only served at lunch hours 11am (e.g. chicken sandwich). So we just got some drinks and my friends got some seasonal mochi donuts. In our experience, the drinks and food are not that good, sadly. Refer to my photos of the drinks we ordered. The drinks tasted odd, don't think some of the ingredients mix well with each other. One of the mochi donuts (snowman donut) took about 15-20 minutes to make..why? I'm happy with the photos we got, but disappointed with the drinks and food. It's definitely insta worthy. read more

This was such a fun place to go! It's a little small, so today they were booked solide from 12-4pm...so definitely recommend making a reservation. I had the spicy rooster (with Korean hot sauce) and it was extremely tasty, but also very messy. The seasoned fried were amazing!! Definitely get those. I also had a strawberry milk, which was nostalgic and sweet. And lastly, I finished with the strawberry sprinkle mochi donut. It was a different texture than I've had before, but very good. I got to try the Ube mochi donut and although I didn't really taste the ube, it was yummy. My favorite part was the photo tour that you get if you spend $25. This place has so many photo opportunities, so it's just going around the restaurant and someone taking pictures of you. So it's such a fun, unique novelty experience! read more

Good for those always posting on social media. You can find lots of things to take pictures in front of and post. Basically it's a place for Instagramming. It also happens to have a food menu. Their thing here is doughnuts and sandwiches. Has a lot of mochi doughnuts. These can also be used to make sandwiches. Get the Plant Base Meals to be the best value on a few items. It's about $17 for one of these. Each of these meals is plant based. It has a tea, sandwich, and side. All these compliment each other. I had the Citrus Green Tea. Good and refreshing. I had the Classic What The Chicken Sandwich. Basically it has a sandwich with a vegan chicken patty. This comes with a side. Have fun looking at all the drawings inside. It's a trip. The cartoon drawings are the most interesting part about, it but don't forget about the food and get some cool pictures of the food, the inside, or whatever. read more

The food is mediocre, this place is only good for pictures and interior art. Overall experience was a bit disappointing due to many things being sold out by 4pm and the strawberry milk tasting spoiled, so I personally would not recommend this place to my friends or come back. I came around 4:20pm to try the viral cat jelly but unfortunately they ran out within the first hour of opening. All the special flavored donuts were sold out too, so I had to order strawberry and Oreo mochi donut, which were actually decent. I ordered strawberry milk and it was heavily artificial tasting with a funky after taste (milk was not fresh). Very interesting environment, ok taste. I love the artistic nature of the place, but was a little underwhelmed by the donuts themselves. I've seen mochi donuts all over social media, so of course, I have been curious to try them, and just so happened 2D Restaurant popped up nearby when I was in the area. Now, I LOVE mochi. It is probably my favorite sweet treat. But mochi donuts are not exactly mochi as I was expecting it. It's more of a hybrid between mochi and a cake donut. A tiny bit chewier than a donut, but more batter-like than mochi. It wasn't unpleasant, but I fail to see how it's worth $4 a donut. I get it, though. You're paying for the kitsch and the rent of Lakeview, not necessarily for what you're buying. You know the thing about social media...if it's instagrammable, it's probably not as exciting as it LOOKS in images. If your goal is to get some neat pics, come here. If your goal is to get down on some donuts...well...there are many other places that do it much better. The hot cocoa was good, and I was curious to try some of the other beverages like the fizzes or maybe a latte. So I might come back. I came on a Friday morning around 9-11 and it was not very trafficked, so it was a great time to work on my laptop for a bit. It does get awkward when you want to check out art near other peoples table. We both Mo-Chick-Nut and the vegan variant.
