Tonight we had wonderful live music by a band called Trio Con Brio, and they were playing a Grateful Dead song when we were heading out. It was very busy. Go to impress parents or similar if you are a college student. For quality and price, based on our experience, would not do again. Overcooked eggs, grudging portions, mix and match plateware that just confounds (bacon and eggs in a bowl - really? but only for one person in the party?). The menu is also misleading. The fabled "hash of the day" turned out to be just a pile of ordinary unremarkable overcooked and unseasoned home fries. The same side everyone else had for free, but costing some part of the wallet-stretching $21 in the context of the all-in "165" breakfast - two overcooked over-easy eggs (no seasoning), a slice of thin sourdough bread cut in two, a pile of indifferent home fries and two of the smallest pieces of bacon you can imagine. $8-12 in any self-respecting diner in the country, and typically made with far more care and flavor. When asked how plain ordinary home fries were a "hash of the day" when they were also unmentioned sides for other dishes, the waitress shrugged and said "it's a KIND of hash. We call that hash here." Touche. Should have asked more questions. And the toast is a single piece of seemingly storebought sourdough bread cut in half (no evidence here, just disappointment being expressed). No substitution, no extras. Pretty much no butter, either. Another member of the party had the blueberry pancakes, Thick and heavy, and unremarkable, once again. Any diner does it better - for half the price. Timing was a serious issue too. The dining room was somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 full. 3-4 tables in other words. Still took well over 45 minutes to get food. Watched 2 pairs of other diners come, order, eat, pay and leave as we waited, Food came cool with no explanation or apology for the long wait. Small complaints perhaps, but at this price, they are making bold claims and utterly failing to match up. Breakfast should be a lay-up for places like this. The ingredients cost almost nothing and the work involved is strictly short-order, simple, fast-turn work in a relatively uncrowded dining room. No reason to go light on ingredients or on flavors. Breakfast is an easy meal to wow in aplace like this, and New England has traditions to uphold - and yet the establishment clearly did not see the point in putting in the effort to match their prices, decor, or location. The capper was watching the tables cleared by a surly teenager in stained board shorts and stained tshirt and sneakers with unwashed hair in a beautiful dining room. The young man clomped in and would withdraw 1-2 plates at a time before stomping out, taking over ten minutes to clear a single table. Overpriced and under-quality. It's for tourists. This time we brought the whole family for dinner. I'd recommend reservations on weekends since it was packed, but we got seated right away because we planned ahead. Our waitress was top-notch -- high energy, charming, attentive. I'd give her 6 stars if I could! She read our crew well and adapted to each individual at the table -- a skill that clearly came from experience, and it served her (and us) well. Everything we had was great: cocktails, appetizers, dinner -- not a bad thing on the table. But the standouts for me were the Buffalo Cauliflower and the Spicy Shrimp Shio Ramen. For drinks, the seasonal Crazy (whiskey, Amaro Montenegro, beet, cayenne, lemon, egg white) and the Veruca Salt (tequila, coconut, avocado, pineapple, lime) were both incredible. I had a Black Manhattan cocktail, supposedly differing from an ordinary Manhattan by use of a different kind of bitters (Amaro) and "filthy cherries." These seemed like basic good quality maraschinos to me (3); nothing "filthy" about them. Nevertheless it was good, fruity, and ample strength. The appetizer selection was small and heavy on bread-based items. (No free table bread was available - grrrr.) Most didn't appeal but the Roasted Garlic did, served with bread (2 kinds: a toasted crostini and a fresh crusty sourdough). The garlic was a whole head, sliced open for easy access and presented on a very hot plate, sweet and mellow from long slow roasting, and served with a choice of cheeses (molten blue, brie, whipped feta, or chèvre) - I chose chèvre and it was very good and a generous portion. A very simple dish not often encountered in restaurants. In retrospect this was the best part of the meal. I felt a little rushed at times and impatient at other times. It took a very long time to get the appetizer so I had nothing to dilute the effects of the strong cocktail. But then more than once I was asked about my entree before I was ready; once when ordering the appetizer and another time soon after I received it and hadn't made up my mind yet. I held my ground and told them I wasn't quite ready, and they accepted that and I took my time eating. There was an eclectic selection of wines by the glass. I had an interesting rosé from Slovenia. My entree was a roasted fish filet (halibut I think? It's no longer listed on the menu) served over a tomato-based sauce. This sauce was richly scented and complex and the plate was attractively garnished with micro greens. But the fish was on the small side and the flavor was monotonous - no discernible browning on the top. The other component, probably an herby cucumber-yogurt sauce resembling raita, which should have been a cool complement to the hot tomato broth, instead was melting unattractively and dispersing into it. Perhaps most disappointing, there was nothing else to this dish. It needed a starch or something (rice, boiled potatoes, or even more of those very good breads from the appetizer - wish I had saved some.) So it's good I got the appetizer first, or I would have left rather hungry. Desserts were also very limited and most didn't appeal. I decided on the Clafouti, which is a baked tart, thicker and heavier than flan, with fruit (black cherries) It was way too hot, didn't have enough fruit, and ice cream would be a far better choice than the amorphous blob of whipped cream it was served with. I should have skipped dessert. It was so boring. As for ambience: it's a crowded, noisy place but in a pleasing way. Very small, and I had reserved one of the 6 seats at the bar (I was dining solo). It's whimsically decorated, like with the grape-covered nude statue holding a candle. There was attractive artwork on the walls, some of which I believe was for sale. I did detect smoky odors coming from the kitchen that other reviewers have noted but I consider that a positive thing, not a negative. So come here if you wish. Check it out and form your own opinion. As for me, I wasn't sufficiently impressed and wouldn't return.

The issues were glaring though. We arrived early for a group reservation of 10 and started at the bar. The service was very slow and we got the sense that the bartender was frustrated that we showed up early with the idea to have a cocktail before our reservation. Bar service continued to be painstakingly slow throughout the night. The restaurant was somehow out of several of their menu options (despite the restaurant not being busy on a weekend day). Not the end of the world, but it left us asking some questions. The major issues really arose when our entree courses were served. They had somehow ran out of french fries, and you could see that in the portion size of the frites in our steak frites (the picture included in our review was our plate -- we had BY FAR the most fries out of those at the table who ordered steak frites). And they ran out of steak - one of the people at our party who ordered steak frites was served a hamburger (which isn't even on the menu). Overall, I thought that we overpaid for the food and if it wasn't for the good company at our dinner - I would have been very frustrated.
