Gritty McDuff's in Auburn is an excellent choice for dinner and drinks! I walked to Grittys from my hotel and sat inside the bar while they made our food to-go. The bar is spacious and on Thursday night they had someone playing life music. We ordered a pizza, burger, and pickle chips and all of the food was tasty. The service is also excellent! Only reason for 4 stars is I didn't care for their beers. I tried their blueberry ale and hazy IPA. I'm a bit of an IPA snob so don't let this ruin your opportunity to have an amazing experience. Having the option of sitting outside is fantastic! Loved that. Varied menu options - for beer, drinks, and food. Mac & Cheese with kielbasa was good. We were surprised to see a pile of jalapeños included - maybe it's on the menu and we missed it. Corn bread was moist. I opted for a build your own burger which was great. No bun, lettuce and tomato. The waitress told me to just tell her what I wanted on it and she'd get it for me. Cool. She didn't tell me I would be charged an extra $1 for a tiny bit of spinach, and 75 cents each for grilled onions and mushrooms. Not cool. I definitely would have just selected an "already made" option. I asked for sautéed mushrooms and onions so was a little surprised to get deep fried shrooms. There were good - I would probably order, and even be willing to pay extra, for them again. My issue was not being told. The seasoned fries were really good. The iced tea and Hazy IPA were (of course) good. Our waitress was a bit too attentive. It seemed almost like every time we took a bite, she was asking if everything was okay. This was awesome. After spending time at the HGI we went to the Auburn Gritty's. The Google search showed they were open until 1 but due to volume they were closing at 11. We get there at 10:57 and didn't want to impose but Jackie said she would take care of us. (Party of 5). She mentioned a smoky old fashioned and I jumped at the chance. It was a slow Tuesday night and she took care of us even though she didn't have to. She was amazing and so was the drink. This is what L/A is all about. Monday night and place looks fully staffed with a moderate level of patrons. I waited roughly 10 minutes to be greeted with a menu. Another 10 to 12 minutes went by before my drink order was taken. And again, another 10 minutes to get my beer. For a place that advertises as a "Pub", you would think the staff would get drinks in your hand immediately. My beer, a stout brewed by Gritty's, tasted old/sour. Was barely drinkable. Ordered French Onion soup and fried shrimp for my meal. Both came out at the same time. And the fried shrimp came out as fish nuggets. So they can't even get the order right. Soup was clearly from a mix, not homemade. Turns out the fish nuggets is what they offer as fish and chips. And these nuggets and frys were cold by the time I finished the soup. The fish was Haddock which gets chewy when cold. I tried to be nice and not make a fuss, but it was inedible. The waitress brought me some shrimp (like I originally ordered). They were at least hot, so I ate those. Table was filthy, beer (the only one I had) was bad, wrong food brought out, timing of food coming out was wrong, service was poor. Cannot recommend. read more

Genuinely just didn't like the place. The food was not good at all. The wings may have been some of the worst quality wings I've ever had. The chicken was literal rubber. Besides our wonderful server Delaney and our speedy service, it was unfortunate. The other dishes we ordered like the blackened chicken sandwich and the habanero burrito were nothing to brag about. The burrito actually only had habanero hot sauce drizzled on top and the only thing in the burrito was just dried out rice and chicken. There was no flavor to it really so that sucked. The sandwiches were okay according to the others in my party, but the sweet potato fries were served nice and soggy. This place was recommended to us by a server to come for some grub and drinks, but I guess she meant just the drinks! It was a brewery and none of us were much of beer drinkers, so we really couldn't enjoy that aspect of it, and it is a brewery. I don't know, I guess just the food threw me off here. Everyone that worked inside was nice and there was an overall cool setup and interior, definitely late night bar ideal and I guess solid drunk food. Gritty's a nice place to go to experience in-house brewed craft beers and a nice patio area to overlook the Androscoggin River. I have only been a few times, to this location, and mostly for drinks with the occasional meal. They offer a great selection of appetizers and throughout the year have one-bath brews of some uniquely flavored beers. Like other breweries, they offer a mug club reserving a clay made 21oz mug for each of your visits. They do have a location in Freeport, which I have been to once, so you will need to go to that location to see my review of the meal I had there. read more

However, I did order the buffalo chicken wrap and it's good to now know their Buffalo Sauce is not a traditional Buffalo - is more like a sweet and sour chili. Ambience: I got the sense that my queer ass was going to end up in the river if I stayed too long. I heard "Try That in a Small Town" while I was there. Service was lovely. The burger was not very good. I enjoyed the side salad far more than the burger I came for. Their beers were pretty tasty. That's not enough to make me want to go back, though. Sat at the bar for dinner last night. Went by myself but was then joined by a few work colleagues. It was lively, busy, a little loud....yet a pleasant, fun and welcoming atmosphere. I had a pour of the Halloween-inspired brew that they make onsite and it was very good. I was actually looking for something a smidge darker, but I enjoyed my beverage regardless. Lots of choices on the menu, but I opted for a "build your own flatbread". (Could have built a quesadilla or pizza as other options). My combination was: bbq sauce (made there with one of the stout beers as a base ingredient, I believe), spinach, caramelized onions and grilled chicken. Mozzarella cheese was also included by default. Delicious! I encouraged my colleagues to partake, but they refused. More for me. Polished off the entire thing. They ordered a couple of margaritas and 2 appetizers: nachos and loaded sweet potato fries. I didn't try either one but the portions were gigantic (I should have taken a picture) and they all seemed to enjoy. If I'm in Auburn in the future, I will definitely eat/drink here again. read more

First time at this location and probably the last. Hostess seems to be hacing a bad night or year(?) and borderline rude. Philly-cheese steak was dry as well as the pesto-goat burger. I just ordered take out today. I I ordered the full nachos, and beer onion rings. MY husband ordered pulled pork and onion rings. It was really good food, but there was a huge catch and i felt like i was being swindled. On the bar there was a sign that said the prices change based on the customer's attitude. I called in and asked them to make the food at 12:30. I did not do it to be demanding or rude. However it was taken as such and i was charged 20-30 dollars more than the cost of the food. This kind of practice will make a lot of people upset. I realize there are a lot of self entitled people there, but my ride to Auburn was a pushy individual who wanted things done his way and this is where the people at the pub decided to overcharge me. After reading mixed reviews we decided to chance it. Got a table outside (Seat Yourself). After a short wait David, our waiter, gave us menus and within ten minutes got our drink order. The Brown was a hearty, full flavored dark beer. Beer comes in two sizes; we opted for the 16oz. Our group ordered pub pretzels, chicken wings, haddock chowder, and the fried scallops plate. Everything was good. Not great, but certainly not horrible. David was very attentive and everything arrived within the standard wait time. First tried this place in 2019. Maybe it was the thrill of just having moved to Maine, or maybe it was that we just really liked this place. We were all ready to buy a mug and join the club. Then the 'Vid came along, and things have not been the same. We have continued to drop in for a beer and some food, from time to time. Have to say, the place just is not living up to those first and great experiences. The last time I ordered a pretzel, it was burned. Ordered a bowl of chili and it was cold. I realize these are challenging times, but this place is not rising to the occasion, even as others are. Going to take a break. Maybe, another time, I will try again. My only complaint and it's a big one is the beer tap is closer to warm than cold. Not sure how this can be overlooked in a spot that brews their own beer. Extremely slow service. I met my husband after work, quick bite to eat. I ordered seasonal draft, he ordered decaf coffee. Took forever, coffee arrived old and Luke warm, waitress offered to heat it up, I suggested a new pot, she said "coffee is awful here" and did not make a new pot. She was nice enough but common sense seemed pretty lacking. Ordered pickle chips for appetizer which were really good, only a tiny container of dipping sauces were provided and had to ask for more. Ordered the shrimp which was fair. Also ordered the Ruben which was shredded and dried out. It was terrible. The sweet potato fries were fantastic. Good with the bad. Grittys is great for many reasons: the food, the beer, the location, and the atmosphere. This is a great spot to take the family out for lunch/dinner or a place to meet up with friends. We haven't experienced anything on the menu that I can recall disliking. While they are rather plain and simple, there is something about their Nachos that I absolutely love. I prefer them here over any Mexican restaurant. They also have great homemade chips that we munch on while waiting for food. Once you have a table and order the food is typically prepared rather quickly. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. They have a deck that overlooks the river which makes this a number one spot for us in the summer. read more

We chose to go to Gritty's versus a brewery a block over because of the expansive menu. The food wasn't horrible, however our waitress was practically non existent. Upon multiple occasions we had to ask other servers for refills, boxes for our food and just general questions about the food. Granted it was the height of the dinner rush, but given she only had 3 tables, it seemed more like she just didn't want to be on the floor than anything else. Average food, poor service, average beer selection. I'm sure it's nice when the deck is open, but will not recommend. Only positive was the live music towards that last few minutes of our stay. Service super prompt, no delays whatsoever, and waitress accommodated our indecision with patience, returning several times until we had decided. Pleasant live music by Mitch Alden, singing (well) lots of popular songs. Volume just right for a restaurant. Seems like he probably has a much great range, but he understood where he was and the net result is perfect in the context. The chili is normal chili, not over spiced, which is what I was looking for. Scallop berry salad I picked because of a reviewer's photo and I was not disappointed. Well, I came of age at Gritty's in Portland... and even though I am originally from L/A and come home at least once a year, I'd never been to the "new" Gritty's until this past week. I feel a little biased in that anything new is going to seem like a hollow replica of the Portland Gritty's (the original Freeport brewery is set up differently than Portland, so that's kinda a different deal altogether), but the L/A Gritty's was decent. I don't generally eat at Gritty's, but I met an old friend here and decided to get dinner. I have to say, I recall everything I've eaten in Portland being pretty amazing as far as pub food goes... but I had the pub mac 'n cheese here and didn't really like it. It may have just been a poor choice on my part (ethically, health-wise, and in terms of never having eaten at the L/A Gritty's... ha), but I wasn't a fan. I got shrimp on it because I live in the midwest now and miss fresh seafood, but it turned out to be A. battered and fried shrimp and B. clearly frozen shrimp. Disappointment! The beer special was pretty fantastic, I have to say. I got a bottle of Halloween ale for 2 bucks, which was as good as I remember it being. If I still lived in L/A (the horror!!), I'm sure I would make this my regular spot - it's classier than most things in L/A while still being relaxed and chill, and of course it's a mircobrewery, which will always hold a special place in my heart. But if you're visiting Maine, I'd definitely recommend the Portland Gritty's over L/A - Portland has better food (as far as my small foray into L/A's food can judge) and being in the Old Port, better atmosphere. I'm glad I went, but I'm not begging for more. read more

This place is very disorganized and the service and food are mediocre at best. I called to make a reservation for 12 people a week prior to my son's 21st birthday. I spoke with the manager "Jacqueline" to make the reservation. It should have been a red flag when she repeated my request back to me and got the time and the date wrong. I corrected her, she took my name and I figured we were all set. Flash forward to the day of my son's birthday. One of the guests arrived a bit before we did. He told them he was meeting a group that had a reservation and was told "we don't take reservations". Huh?!? Once we arrived, I noticed a sign that said "Please seat yourself". I looked around for an employee that I could speak with, since there was obviously no hostess. The bar is right there when you walk in the door, yet the bartender never even acknowledged 12 people standing there looking confused. I finally saw a young man at a POS machine and approached him saying that we had a reservation for 12 people. He looked absolutely shell shocked. Here are my guests standing around in the entry and this poor young man has NO idea what to do. He approached the bartender and after a few minutes of confusion, he led us to a side room that was clearly used for "storage". The benches were up on the tables, everything was dusty and there were cornhole boards propped up against the wall. On the upside, we had a whole, albeit small, room to ourselves. We ordered drinks and waited forever to receive them. Some guests received the wrong drink and we had to remind him that one was missing their drink entirely. I want to make it clear that I'm not throwing this server under the bus. It wasn't his fault. The manager had never written in the book that there was a reservation that night. He was thrown into this situation and likely did the best he could. It was obvious he was "stressed" and not exactly happy to have to deal with a party of 12 unexpectedly. The food was brought out and I can only speak for myself and a couple of others as to the quality. I ordered the "Blackened Haddock Burrito", which sounded delicious but was as bland as a cup of water. The haddock clearly had NO seasoning on it, nor was it blackened. The "fiesta" rice that was supposed to be in it look and tasted like plain white rice. It came with a side of salsa and sour cream that were in teeny, tiny plastic cups. Hardly enough for the burrito and the tortilla chips that came with it. I ate half of it and didn't care to finish the rest as it was so tasteless. A few of the guests ordered pizza and they were so overdone that they couldn't even chew the crusts. We had to ask for silverware, napkins, salt and pepper. And one guest didn't receive part of his order until the rest of us were nearly finished. When I made the reservation, the manager asked if we'd be bringing a cake. I told her we would and she said to give it to the hostess (who was nonexistent that night) when we arrived and they would put it in their refrigerator. That didn't happen, so I set it on a dusty table next to where we were seated. After dinner I had to ask the server if it would be possible to get a knife to cut the cake. He did bring out a - serrated bread knife - and extra plates. Despite the horrible service and mediocre food, my son managed to have a good time with his friends and family. However, I won't be going back to Gritty MacDuff's in Auburn any time soon. For me, it was a disappointment and not a pleasant experience. read more
