We first came to Moderation when they first opened a few years ago. Have not been back since (not big beer drinkers - but we love a good brewery vibe) and have been waiting to try the new former Brunswick Fire Department location. It was awesome! Welcomed by the owner and found some yummy beer options. My sister was visiting and she isn't a beer drinker at all but tired (and liked!) the fruity spritz - it is frankly a great option to serve in a brew pub. I had the Oyster Lager - dark but not heavy tasting. Wayne went for their1856 Lager and my brother in law opted for the Champs Lager. All good - and bonus - Dog Haus was the food truck so we enjoyed the following: Wayne had the House Dog with sauerkraut, mustard, grilled onions & celery salt. I had the same but with caramelized onions instead and no sauerkraut. Bill totally enjoyed the OG dog, with maple mustard & curry ketchup, They also allow you to substitute a red snapper (you know, a traditional Maine dog!) for the beef one. All in all it was a great afternoon, sitting in the doors of the brewery, chatting and enjoying hot dogs and beer! read more

Attended an event here in support of a local historical society. I must admit I am not sure I would have visited otherwise, but I was pleasantly surprised. The brewery occupies our town's retired fire station. They have done an admirable job of repurposing the building while also preserving much of the historic building. The service was subdued but pleasant. I did not try any of their own beer, but enjoyed some of their other offerings. Definitely worth a visit. read more

This is a very small brewery, with about 6 tables and the bar. They had 4 beers on tap and a couple of ciders and spritz to try. We liked that they had flights to try different beers. What a beautiful little surprise of a brewery! It was brighter than most breweries are and had a sort of coffee shop feel- very airy and comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised as to how many stouts they included in the flight, since many places include 0-1. The names are great too- one of my favorites was a Janet Mills themed "Inaugur- ale"! Other favorites of mine in the flight were the Boxshopgirls and Blue. We came in the day after Valentine's Day, and they were offering a free truffle of your choice with every flight, which was a great touch! Moderation Brewing is the new game in town. Housed in the oldest building that side of Maine Street in downtown Brunswick. It has six beers available right now. The atmosphere is spartan, clean, Scandinavian. The decor is not overwhelming, instead a cross between a museum and Ikea showroom; more bare walls space than decoration, more golden wood and minimalistic furniture. The lighting that hangs from the ceiling was original to the building, found in a closet during renovations. The owners have taken careful consideration in choice of decor, harkening back in time with elements that add to the environment and overall feel of the establishment. A beautiful wooden bar is the focal point of the room, with enough space for five or six people. There are a few tables which seat four. A small seating area up front can hold about 8-9. There are two restrooms. To the back of the room is the brewing space. Clean, sparkling, polished stainless equipments reminds you that this is a brewery. The space is different than most breweries. The conventional brick and exposed wood or hip, quirky, electric style abandoned for a more tidy look. The decor and space has a Scandinavian influence. The wall paper behind the bar reminiscent of patterns I found through my travels of that region and Finland. A small chalk board lists the beers. The tap handles are carved wood, the grain and striations popping through amber stain. Some kettle cooked potato chips are for sale. It is hard and sometimes seems unfair to review a brewery as they first open. It is difficult to rate beer when there are over a hundred breweries and brewpubs in the state of Maine. To stand out, you must be spectacular. With that said, I don't think the beer was spectacular, it fell short. Six beers are on tap, and I tried all six: 1.) Farmor: Norweigan Farmhouse 3.9% 2.) First One: Pale Ale 5.5% 3.) Noble Red: 5.4% 4.) Pat: Norweigan IPA 6% 5.)Happy Prince: Dry Irish Stout 4.3% 6.) Box Shop Girls: Breakfast Stout 6.5% As I tried the flight, I went down the line. Farmor, First One, Noble Red all tasted very similar. I felt there was very little flavor different from one to the other. Yes, I could tell they were different, but each had a bitter, sulfur aftertaste that I thought was reminiscent of a Corona. I was not a fan at all. The first two are a pale yellow. The Noble Red is a cloudy red, with very little malt flavor profile. The Pat was good, but still, that aftertaste. I don't want my IPAs to be hop-bombs, there is no skill in throwing hops at something until it is dank. This lacked. Lacked hop, lacked malt, it seemed weak. I am a huge fan of stouts. I expected more. Happy Prince was ok, but lacked body and substance. Again, flavor profile lacked. Box Shop Girls was extremely disappointing. I love breakfast stouts. I've drank so many. This fell so short of a breakfast stout. Again, like the Irish stout, the body wasn't there. It was watery. The head of the beer weak and fizzled away after a few minutes. The taste was the best out of the six, but still didn't impress. read more

There's a lot to commend downtown Brunswick. Locals know that and out-of-towners are finding that out. What's been lacking are places that brew their own beer. A brand new place (opened 6 weeks ago), Moderation Brewing, is a nice addition to Maine Street and the state's always-growing craft beer scene. I tried a flight, which features all six of their current beers. They have some unconventional styles, like a breakfast stout (Box Shop Girls), which is a nod to the past, when women worked in the towns vibrant manufacturing sector, including a former cardboard-box factory. This stout is a nice blend of flavors including chocolate, coffee, and a hint of roast. My favorite was The Happy Prince, a lower ABV stout. This one is a dark and dry stout, which included malts sourced from just down the road in Lisbon Falls, from Blue Ox Malt House. What I found especially satisfying as a resident of the town is that the owners, Mattie and Philip, make you feel like they're glad you came. When you are just finding your way in a new town, it's always nice to have a place that you can go back to, knowing that you'll be welcomed and made to feel like a "local." I'm really looking forward to the warmer weather and Moderation. They've just installed a beer rail outside and this should make for some fun summer beer-drinking, in moderation, mind you! read more

We stopped here during a rainy afternoon after lunch. The brewery is clean and bright. We sat at the bar. The woman working the bar was friendly and patient. I order a pint of the mango beer while my friend had a flight. For not having been open very long, there seemed to be a loyal following the day that we were there. I love beer so I thought it'd be nice to try a new local place while visiting home. Moderation Brewing's beer was good for the most part. I went with friends and we all got flights, I liked that we were able to try all the beers on their menu and it was great that they had such a variety (IPAs, ales, stout). Out of the 6 they have, I really enjoyed 2 of them (the red & the mango wheat ale) and the others were just okay or I didn't like them at all, which is how it usually goes when you're trying a variety of beers like this. Overall, I would recommend checking it out for the beer The reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 4 was mostly because of the service. My friend got there a little after the rest of us and ended up having to go up to the bar to order because no one ever came back to our table to check on us after our first order. I guess their machine also wasn't working and they couldn't print out our checks to bring to us, which is fine and wouldn't have bothered me if they had told us that. We sat around for a while wondering if they would be bringing us a check or not. Eventually my friend went up to the bar and could pay, but it would have been nice to know we had to do that. Phil absolutely knows what he's doing with his beer. The red ale and stout are my favorites with his red being my number 1 choice for red. Both are distinctly his own style and not just the same old. The stout box shop girls is light, drinkable, and in no way lacks that great roasted coffee flavor. Seriously just give this place a try. I walked by this place a few times and it was always packed - good sign! When I finally stopped in, I was greeted by a light and friendly space with a really kind staff. We were able to see the fermentation tanks through the glass, so that added to the authenticity of the brewery. There were games to play, which kept us there til closing! I've had Moderation on my list for a couple of months and was finally able to give it a go this past weekend. I try not to rate a brewery on beer taste alone, unless something is really off, as everyone has different tastes. That being said, while I'm normally a big fan of IPAs (along with the rest of the country), I was not crazy about their double IPA, and the Norwegian IPA had an unusual taste to it at first, but after a few sips I liked that one a bit more. I really enjoyed the red and I'm not normally a fan of wheat beers, but their mango wheat ale was pretty good. The space is pretty funky but it works, especially on a nice day like we had. When we first came in there were only two, not very talkative guys there and no one else and the music was really soft. It was a little awkward, but thankfully there was some outside space too. There are two 2-top tables out front and we initially thought this was all there was, but the girl running the bar was great about pointing out that there was more via a sidedoor. Sure enough, there were some cute small patio tables along the outside wall and some big picnic tables and a cornhole set out back. For better or for worse (it made me super hungry) you can smell all the delicious things being cooked next door via the Indian place. As a big fan of Indian, it was heaven. If you're crazy and don't like Indian food, I guess this could be off-putting, but seriously, you're nuts. Maybe they should work a to-go situation with the Indian restaurant.... it was like when you smell popcorn at a movie theater. Full on Pavlov's Dog. My main qualm with this place was that the prices seemed out of whack. The flight was not too bad, I believe $14 for the 6 beers on tap, but after that the individual beer prices and growler fills were more than I was expecting. I'm very accustomed to paying $16+ for a 4-pack, and know the state of craft beer prices these days, but almost all of their 10oz pours are $6 which was some sticker shock. Rising Tide in Portland has all 10oz pours and they're all $4. The growler fills at Rising Tide are also between $11-$15 (after the growler deposit) vs. $10 at Moderation, but Rising Tide is giving you 64oz where Moderation is only 32oz. If I can get 64oz of Ishmael or Daymark for $11, there's just no way I'm paying $10 for 32oz of anything unless it's truly incredible. This brewery seems to be serious about their name (lots of exclamation points around the ABV on the double IPA), so maybe the prices are their way of making sure you don't drink too much? My GF doesn't really drink much beer and was my DD, but at $6 per 10oz, I just had the one and didn't fill a growler on my way out. I'm glad I tried it and if friends wanted to play some cornhole perhaps I'd go back, but I'm not in any big hurry. read more

This new brewery is a great spot with unique modern beers brewed on-site, friendly staff and a nice community feel. But, even better - beer is the focal point. My favorite thing about the tap list so far is that they are not your standard modern brewery line up limited to a list of IPA variations. Their current IPA, PAT, is great however. Very full citrus flavor that comes together in a smooth almost creamy way. Their Red Ale, Noble Experiment, is far from a malty, sugary Red. Also, noteworthy and unique is the Norwegian Farmhouse ale. Stout lovers, you're taken care of too. read more
