Great beer and service, good bar food, outstanding atmosphere. Staying in Freeport for a long weekend and made Baxter brewing a destination for lunch. Totally worth the trip!

My wife and I stopped here on a whim while we were in town and we are so happy we did. Both of us attended the local college almost four decades ago when this neighborhood was run down and depressing. Over the past decades Lewiston has a done a wonderful job of revitalizing this area. The Pub at Baxter is a perfect example of this success. Located in an historic mill, this restaurant has created a fantastic space that capitalizes on the architectural features. More importantly, the dining experience was excellent. Our server Ava was fantastic and friendly. The food was delivered promptly and delicious. My wife, who does not drink, loved her mocktail which is impressive considering this is a brew pub! I highly recommend you give this place a try.

We went on a Friday at the busy time for dinner around 6 pm, and they had trivia underway. This would probably make it one of the busiest time frames to go. The first waitress was gruff when putting us on the waiting list, which was super unwelcoming, but it was a very busy night. I'm sure, like everyone else, they are very short staffed. It didn't start promising which was really worrisome as I specifically selected this brewery for a birthday dinner and wanted them to enjoy this selection. But I chatted with a blonde waitress to ask if we could at least order a beer while we waited, and she was phenomenal. Super helpful and sweet, and we were sat at the bar instantly. She was probably the warmest customer service we've gotten in Maine. The two wait staff/bartenders at the bar also wonderful. Friendly and attentive and it was a pleasant time. They were managing a lot of customers very impressively - never felt forgotten or in need. Beer selection really is excellent - plenty of variety for all preferences. Nice light options all the way to barrel aged and stouts to ipas. For the non-beer drinkers, there's also seltzers on tap and cocktails. We sampled 10 or so drinks on draft by getting two beer flights, and loved them all. Food was hot and we didn't wait very long considering how busy it was. Pub fare, a little bit more limited on options but generally anyone would be able to find something. I heard too late that the brussel sprouts and banh mi was a favorite. My date enjoyed the buffalo wings. Beer is definitely the star here, as is the facility. Right next to a stream, a few great outdoor patio options that looked even better at night with the fire-lit walkways. The bathrooms are divided, but have a shared sink/mirror area between the two M|F. We'd definitely come back. The birthday person was very happy with all the delicious beer choices. Big shoutout to the blonde waitress for really turning the night around and being so friendly and helpful.

    Chicken Fingers and Cesar Salad

My wife and I stopped in for lunch on our way through Lewiston. WOW. What a fabulous spot. I've always liked Baxter Brewing Stowaway IPA and was excited to visit their brew pub. The restaurant is inside an old mill with a lovely rustic old canal with waterfall. The mill has been beautifully restored with the old rustic timbers sanded to a bright like new finish along with the original sluice pipe/penstocks built into the architecture. The lighting is beautiful cast iron pipe turned into lights giving a very rustic industrial feel. Huge open space. Very cool. The beer was amazing. I ordered the Macaroni and Cheese with Bacon ( on the bartender Keira's recommendation) My wife had the Cesar Salad with Chicken Fingers and fries. The food was spectacular and you can tell it was hand crafted and not the typical SYSCO frozen pre-portioned junk you get at other pubs. The bartender went out of her way to tell my wife straight away that the Cesar Salad would not be coming with croutons as they were not ready baking yet. She offered a substitution of pickled onions. (Most places would just serve the salad without the croutons and hope you wouldn't notice them misssing ). Event though this was a bit out of the way for us, we'll definitely be back as the food, ambiance, service and pricing is well worth the trip.

First time visit to BBC. Ok, the entire experience was pretty cool. I know they have eve flu opened the space, so the potential is incredible. The walk up to the gate with the whole space in the background is impressive. At night with the tase lights and all....well can't wait. The space inside is huge and offers all types of seating and standing options. The old mill look and the woods, stones and brick is fantastic. What a fun space and spacious. The staff is very friendly and our wait staff was very attentive to our needs. It was not busy when we arrived but did fill it shortly after. But not a problem in that space. The menu and happy hour specials were great and the tater tots rocked. Loved the mini skillet. I was so glad we stopped by and can't wait to return. What a fun space to hang after work with co-workers and friends. Plus being in the old mill area adds so much character.

I was honestly shocked to see a real veggie option on the menu that wasn't a veggie burger (although they have that too), so I had to try the chimichurri tofu. It was cooked well - 4 slices cut thin enough to give it a good crispy exterior. The chimichurri sauce was tasty. However, it feels like whoever created this dish has never cooked with tofu before or at least not very much. My suggestion would be marinating the tofu before cooking. The chimichurri made it somewhat enjoyable (I did finish it all!) but the flavor dissolves quickly as you chew through the tofu. I think marinating it will really seal the deal on that dish. Otherwise, the service was great, very friendly and very prompt. The building is quaint and bigger than it looks from the outside. I think my entree was a little overpriced for what I got at $23, but I digress. I see the vision and wish them success.

But it wasn't all bad--I'll start with the positives! The staff were great--super friendly, welcoming, and helpful. I also enjoyed the fries, which were plentiful, and the pomegranate blonde ale, which was very refreshing. Although we didn't play, I was happy to see a stack of games on the bar. We were seated upstairs at the recommendation of the hostess. The decor was a little dated but it gave me a cozy and nostalgic feel. Now to the not-so-positives. I ordered the caprese sandwich and in the first bite, I was alarmed to feel something hard, sharp, and un-chewable. Confused, I had to fish whatever it was out of my mouth and found a small piece of what felt like some kind of wood. I realized after a couple minutes that it was the same color and texture as the toothpicks that held the sandwich together. I'm not sure how it got in my mouth--maybe a piece broke off in the kitchen and got stuck in or on the sandwich--but it was the first bite and I wasn't anywhere near where the toothpicks stabbed the sandwiches. Luckily that was the only splintered piece I found in my food, but I was very cautious for the rest of the meal. Honestly, if not for this, this probably would have been a 4-star review, but it put me a little on edge for the rest of the experience. The sandwich itself was decent--the bread was a little charred, but I actually kind of prefer that myself. Caprese sandwiches are always simple and good, as long as the ingredients are decent. The worst part for me was the price. I'm happy to pay a little extra for a great meal, but $18 for a caprese sandwich feels steep. I'm not from around here, so maybe this is normal in these parts where there are limited dinner options. My wife's tofu dinner was $23 for a small portion--back home we could get twice as much tofu for half the price. I always thought city life was more expensive, but I've learned my lesson here!

Beer purists may find the brews to be average, but I'm more than happy with the variety of beers offered and satisfied with the ones I tried, especially the Peanut Butter Milk Stout, There is also hard seltzer ("hard water") that can be flavored with any of the Italian soda flavors, a hard tea, and hosted cider, all gluten free, as well as mixed drinks. No question there is something for everyone. So happy to have more food items to choose from to go with the beers. A nice assortment of options at a reasonable price point. I had a Rueben panini with kettle chips, which was satisfying. My friend has the Birchwood Signature Soft Pretzel that is made with spent grain from the beer production and served with warm beer cheese, which also was decent. A standout was the server - Ella Q - she was super helpful at explaining the menu, flights, and was so pleasant! Knew just when to check in, and when to give us space. Bottom line - a solid local option for food & beer with great service on this particular evening, and live music on some nights. Grab your friends, have a flight or a pint, some food, and be happy that this option is available in Gray.

For the main courses we had the home made mac and cheese that was topped with pulled pork which was sauced in Sweet Baby Rays and the Loaded Nachos topped with the Firehouse's award winning chili. The food all came out sized for a table of 8 with savory and sweet hints of deliciousness! The waitress was welcoming, outgoing, and offered sound advice on food choices. Not having been here before, my friend and I appreciated the clear signage of where to go for food vs. gear. Just a few things I found a bit odd or inconvenient - 1) They have a wonderful beer selection, but don't do flights :( 2) The hybrid service model is a bit confusing and certainly inconvenient. Technology could certainly help smooth this out. 3) To pay, you either have to pay in full (and tip) when you order, or have to wait in line at the same line where people are ordering in order to pay, 4) 3 single bathrooms are not enough for the peak capacity Aside from the wonderful beer selection, the highlights were free x-country skiing with a warming hut, plenty of parking and friendly staff.
