It's cool that we have access to a drive in. I brought my grandchildren by for the novelty of the experience. Val's is good for that - novelty and experience. Maybe nostalgia. The girls were friendly and the food came out quickly enough. As for the food itself? Not my favorite to be honest. Reasonably priced but greasy burger and greasier onion rings. You pay for every single thing put onto the burger - lettuce, tomato, etc. now that the kids have had the experience, I doubt I'll be back to be honest. read more

Val's Drive-In is a diner staple in the twin cities of Maine. Known for their homemade Root Beer, they offer drive-up service where you order and eat in your car. If you like sweet potato fries, you have to order a larger because a small is not enough once you start eating them. They offer burgers, hot dogs (red and brown), lobster rolls, chicken tenders, clam cakes, ice creams sundaes, and of course root beer floats. You can eat in your car or at one of their picnic tables in the rear of the building. On occasion they will have antique car shows and you can also work on your baseball swing at their batting cages. I highly recommend this if you are visiting thew Lewiston/Auburn area as you will not be disappointed. I have been going here for over 30 years, so they must be doing something right if they are always my go to for a quick meal. read more

Let's get the "negatives" right out of the way: ... now that that's over with, on to the positives: It's fast, it's diner food brought to your window, it's reasonably priced, our carhopesses were super friendly, the food was cooked perfectly. You guys, it's greasy, fast food- so don't come for me.. Yes- the parking lot is weird but just get in where you fit in, it's a horse shoe shape, if the first row is full, park behind someone- when they leave, you pull up to the front so someone else can scoot in behind you! Eaaaaasy peasy! Cash only, be nice to your carhops bc they're running around in the heat, and in typical Maine fashion, it'll be busy in the summer. Xoxo 10/10 would recommend. read more

Despite being only 35 years old, I actually really like drive INS. Yes I grew up with drive-thru, but my parents introduced me to many things from their generation that I still hold fondness for. Out looking for a family lunch, I decided a drive-in would be a good idea because my kids would probly be asleep by the time we got there. So off we went to the New place I discovered on Yelp. We pulled into a spot and parked and a waitress came over and put a tag on our windshield under the wiper. After looking at the menu, somewhat limited but covering all of the traditional bases, we flashed our lights as indicated for service. The waitress made clear that this place is CASH ONLY Several times to make sure nobody was confused. We were told that day was buy 1 get 1 hamburgers, so we each got our own with the toppings we prefer. The hamburgers were $3 and could not have been more than 1/8 of an inch thick. The taste was acceptable but I found the quality sub par. The poutine was incredibly salty and was essentially French fries with gravy and 4 chunks of cheese on top. $5 for a small order and I expect more than that. The Onion rings were overly greasy in my opinion, but I am sensitive to that. Well there are other things on the menu such as hot dogs to try, driving all the way to Lewiston is a far trip for us and if it had been worse it, we would return. Upon driving up to Val's you get that American Graffiti feeling and vibe as you drive up. The throw back to the 50's-70's. Sadly that also seems to be where the quality of the food is at as well. The burgers where nothing more than a cheap version of something you would get at McDonalds with a little less flavor. The fries where ehhh. They where over cooked and had that sitting around for to long under the heat lamp flavor. Their BLT's where there. Kind of hard to screw up a BLT. Fun and friendly atmosphere, if atmosphere is the right word for a drive-in. Very friendly folks working hard to put on a nostalgic vibe. Skip the lobster roll - this is not that place. Root beer float is worth a stop just for that. Chocolate shake was pretty decent. Sandwiches, fries, and onion rings are fine, just fine. This is a fun place to visit with the family. Not only is the food decent, it's quick and easy. We ate lunch on Wednesday and both ordered the Wednesday special ($1.35 hamburgers), a small sweet potato fry and a small French fry; all for $10 total. Can't go wrong there! The girls are always very friendly and if you're looking for something to do, you can visit their batting cages and hit some balls. read more

Unimpressive for the price. Bread was soggy on the chicken sandwich as well as the cheeseburger. Cheeseburger was flavorless. Previously frozen burger ​patty and onion rings were very greasy. Not sure where the four and five stars come from and to top it off we drove in on the side of building and didn't see the CASH ONLY sign and had to cough up an extra $3.00 for that. We've had better meals at Burger King. I'm only giving 2 stars because the service was fine. read more

Val's Rootbeer is a staple in Lewiston. Because it - like most ice cream stands in the state - is only open for part of the year due to it's unique outside-only dining experience, for many locals it's as big a signifier that spring has sprung as the start of baseball season is. And when it closes at the end of summer (a little prematurely some years, I agree), it's time for folks to apple pick (Oct.), eat turkey (Nov.), celebrate the holidays (Dec.), then look forward to April when Val's (and Dairy Joy) reopens and the Red Sox hold court at Fenway once again. My family and friends used to go to Val's ALL. THE. TIME. when we were younger, because it was a cheap and fun way to take a bunch of kids out (literally). My sister and I loved the chicken nuggets (which were small [think: littler than tater tots] and plentiful - perfect for kid fingers), the thin hamburgers positively loaded with relish, the greasy onion rings, and the root beer. Oh, oh. The root beer. It's some of the best in the state. I don't know if that's because it's so delicious; or, because it's served in enormous, frosty pint glasses which makes little kids feel super grown-up and responsible like; or, because it's served outside and nothing is better than al fresco dining... whatever the case may be, it's awesome. As is the experience if you let it be. NEWS FLASH: It's a drive-in. Don't expect anything fancy or perfect. It's high school girls in poodle skirts (on occasion; this isn't something they actually do all of the time) serving mediocre but extraordinarily cheap 1950's style diner food (fried clam strips, french fries, grilled cheese, BLTs, mozzarella sticks, etc.). And for decades (not just recently with the addition of picnic tables) they've encouraged kids to run around their green grass next to and behind the building if they don't want to be cooped up in their car eating. If you're eating here, it's most likely summer. And when we live in a state that's so cold so often, we really can't afford to be unhappy when the sun is shining. This is the epitome of a mom n pop shoppe. You drive in and roll your window down. A girl will come to your window and take your order. They bring your food on a tray that hangs from your car window. In the background 50's music plays. On a hot day there's nothing better than drinking an ice cold Val's root beer. Everything is so simple here. It brings me back to being 5 years old. Wow! Cutest little drive in . i just recently moved to the area. I pulled in with my dog. 2 waitresses ready and waiting. First off menu is simple and easy to read. Waitresses are friendly and smiling. Prices are so amazingly cheap. Im not quite sure how thay works or we are all getting royaly screwed ecerywhere else. I had large shrimp for 5.99 and got aplain hamburger for my pup yoda! I am a foodie. I like diners, fast food, casual, upscale, fine dining! Anything and everything I enjoy. I know that people go there for the nostalgic aspect of the place and they grew up with this but I don't find the food or the way they operated be good at all. If one of the girls don't realize they missed you than you will wait a long time to be noticed. The parking situation is just that, a situation. It's not safe nor is it conducive to functionality of the place. The food really needs to feel all American. Going back in time is cool but my taste buds don't have to suffer. read more

I was a little thrown off by the attire of the young girls working and at first they came off pretty rude.. but by the end of our Val's experience they were very helpful and even gave our group a new order of onion rings for free when ours fell on the floor! The prices are more than reasonable for the amount of food you get. But be aware that the lobster rolls and grilled cheese are both served on hamburger buns, which I think is weird. Everyone enjoyed their food (except for those who ordered the grilled cheese) but the onion rings were the biggest hit with the root beer in a close second. They have specials all week long and I think it's a great place for a quick bite to eat. We had 11 people and the food was out extremely fast and hot. read more

A classic, old school drive-in, the kind Guy Fieri once promised to search out and celebrate. This is no pretentious, self-consciously upscale, high-priced bistro disguised as a faux-neighborhood eatery. Friendly waitresses/carhops come to your car to take your order, and then serve it on a tray that hooks onto your partially raised window. It's good old fashion burgers and fries, along with frosty-mug root beer, and ice cream for dessert. There are other options, like lobster rolls and hot dogs, but I stick with my old favorites. Sadly, it's a seasonal place, closing over our harsh winters. Seeing the lot buried under four feet of snow is always painful, but it only makes opening day all the sweeter. read more

Have hit this place every year for 30 years and love the food but the best is there root beer in a frosted mug. They had plastic mugs for a little while but changed back to glass good call. My kids and grand kids love the idea of getting served from the windows of the car and starting there own tradition of going to Val's every summer. read more

Give this place props for creating a throwback experience to somewhere in the not-so-distance past - i.e. the 50's and 60's. The waitresses are indeed decked out in poodle skirts and pony tails tied back with chiffon ribbons. It's a car hop after all and while there is a sign indicating that blinking lights prompts service, the only way to get food is to be approached by one of these young lasses. Although there are picnic tables, everyone was munching on the Americana fare in their cars despite the glorious early-June weather. The food is basic car-hop - burgers, onion rings and fried seafood. My burger was a double and very juicy with a nice red tomato, cheese and smothered onions as well as frosted mug of rootbeer-a bit impractical for the car but a nice touch. Dining Companion enjoyed his fried seafood basket. I didn't care for the onion rings and snagged some of his crinkle-cut fries. One tip - be sure you have plenty of napkins to keep the car tidy! There is a 5% charge to use a debit/credit card so you might want to sidle up to an ATM prior to arrival. read more
