This restaurant was recommended to us by the owner of the cabin we were staying at, and we gratefully welcomed the suggestion of a local. Since things are a bit different due to COVID, we called to make sure they were opened. As they were we made our way there for lunch. Now, we should have also asked if we could "walk-in"... when we got there, since they are limiting the amount of tables open for service, they recommend making reservations. But, we were lucky to be able to wait just 30mins before a table opened up. In the meantime we grabbed a drink and studied the menu. So many options! Once seated, inside, we noticed they definitely are practicing "social distancing" and cleaning thoroughly after each customer leaves. We were brought waters, asked if we wanted to order more drinks and after some recommendations by our server we got: Pimento Cheese Fried Okra - this was highly recommended by our server. If I'm honest, I wasn't sure I would like it but WOW! This was delicious! The Pimento cheese dip is so flavorful and the okra was perfectly cooked, even when not coated with the breading it was good. 1885 Burger - I just had to have their signature burger which also had pimento cheese in it, plus smoked bacon, fried onions, lettuce, a sort of mayo mix, and all in a soft fresh bun. With fries on the side. We told our server we would be sharing the burger and they cut it in half and divided the fries, bringing us out two plates. Quick to seat us and drinks came out quickly. Abigail checked on us often. We ordered strawberry smash and derailed cocktails. Both good. Strawberry smash really sweet but exactly as described and derailed was less sweet and good for my partner to enjoy. Food took a little longer than expected because party of 2 after us got their entree before but with context it wasn't a bad wait. We ordered fried flounder and lemon chicken. I subbed cole slaw for mac and cheese and at the end realized there was an up charge based on how much the sides were separately would've liked that confirmed when I asked can I sub but not a big deal at all. Flounder at first was nondescript and at best it was a good captain d's fried fish but not great. Mac and cheese was really hot but not flavorful and I'd suggest cooking less or cooking in a deeper ramekin to avoid it drying out so much. My hush puppies were too crispy that the crust would peel off in halves and leave the stuffing inside which actually tasted really good. Well seasoned so if lighter cooked it would've been the star for my dish. My partner had the chicken. The lemon sauce was very lemony but okay. The chicken was dry though so disappointed. Green beans too crunchy for his liking but okay and the mashed potatoes were good. Was excited about going based on the website but then got there and even the menu was a totally different vibe, rundown and average at best. Will not return our next trip. read more

It's nice when a local tip pays off huge. We were leaving the place we were staying on a farm near Chattanooga when we asked the guy there, "what's a place you would recommend with local flavor and locals like." He said 1885 grill but wasn't sure if it was currently open. We called and confirmed they did, with distance seating outside, so we headed that way. We figured if a local recommended it, it was probably solid. We had the bad luck of showing up at 2 when it was "full". Only about 4 of 12 tables were occupied outside but that was the current rules. We ordered a couple of their cocktails and grabbed some extra seats that were out front in hopes someone would cancel their reservation. Lucky for us, people often do, as we got seats just a few minutes later. We got quick kind service, with a gal who gave us some good tips on the menu. Our food was out in no time. The burger was very good and made right to medium rare. I think the exceptional bite was of the fried okra. We both ate those us before anything else. It made us feel like we had a taste of the area and was really good too. We didn't hang out too long, and made our table free for the other hungry patrons. I was really looking forward to eating here based on all the good reviews and recommendation from our Airbnb host. Unfortunately, I had a horrible lunch experience here. We came at 11:30am, 30 mins after they opened. The hostess wouldn't seat us, even though 2/3 of the restaurant was empty, because she said they don't "double seat" their servers. I asked her what "double seat" meant and she just stared at me. I don't understand why I had to wait by the hostess stand vs. waiting at a table for the server to be free when the restaurant was empty. She didn't even bother giving us a menu to look over until I asked another gentlemen for it. Overall, the food was great and the server was attentive. This place exceeded my expectations!! As is typical, I was browsing Yelp for a place to try. 1885 had stellar reviews so I decided to give it a try. We arrived on a Saturday evening around 8:10pm. As we drove by we noted that this place was crowded. That is typically an indication that the food is good! We proceeded to find a parking spot. This is slightly challenging. We ended up parking on the side walk in front of the main entrance. We did not have a ticket on our car upon departure, so this must be ok. When we walked in we were immediately greeted by two staff. We advise that we were interested in dining in, but did not have reservations. Initially we were told that they did not have a table for us. Since social distancing is now I thing, I understood that they would not be able to seat us. We decided to get our food to go. I was determined to eat from here. After we ordered and went to the restroom we were advised that we could dine in!! We were placed at a table in a corner, and we were indeed at least 6 feet away from the next table of patrons. Additionally all staff members had on masks. They were clearly following the guidelines that were set in place due to COVID 19. Our waitress for the evening was Katie. She was friendly, attentive, and provided the best service. Throughout the evening she was constantly bringing glasses of water when she noticed we were about to finish a glass. She always told us what she was doing next, answered all of our questions and made sure we knew she was available to provide us with whatever we needed. Our first appetizer was the pimento cheese and okra. EVERYTHING about this was tasty. It was very clear that the pimento cheese was made in house. Admittedly it does not taste like your standard pimento cheese. The okra also had a great flavor. This came paired with 7 pieces pita bread. We asked for more bread due to us not having enough to pair with the pimento cheese. There is a small charge of 25 cents for 4 pieces. We ordered 8 for 50 cents. The appetizer cost $8.00. Next up were the award winning wings. When I tell you these things were cooked to perfection!! I don't know what the secret to them being crispy on the outside and melt in your mouth on the inside with a mouthwatering sauce!! OMG!! I am still thinking about the wings the day after my visit. They come with a few sticks of celery and ranch and/or blue cheese. The only negative is that these are more wingette's instead of a full size wing. For the price that makes sense. They are $10 for 8. For the entrees we had the mushroom and grits and the grilled rainbow trout. I was not crazy about the mushroom and grits. There was a strong taste of vinegar that took away from the other natural flavors I was expecting (capers and herbs). I would not order this on my next visit. The trout was good. The side of rosemary fries were ok, as were the green beans. To top off the night I had to try the bread pudding. The flavor for the night was s'mores. This was served warm with a house made whipped cream. The consistency of this bread pudding was not what I am accustomed to, but it taste great. I could not finish it all so I look forward to enjoying the rest today! I am eager to try some of the other entrees, so I will be returning. I think this place offers great value. You get quality and good tasting food at an affordable price with unmatched service. One final note. Can't give this place a good review because we didn't eat here. I'm giving a slightly negative review because of how we were treated. We walked in 40 minutes before closing time. Restaurant was mostly empty, patio was 1/3 full. Asked to sit on the patio and was told it was closed. Then was told she needed to check what area to seat us in. She never came back. A young man then came and said all his servers were trying to get off the clock and the only seats were at the bar. We chose to leave, didn't feel welcome. We were excited to try this restaurant after our Airbnb host suggested it. When we arrived we were told it would be a 45 minute wait even though they had 7 tables empty that we could see from the hostess stand. We waited the 45 minutes and then I asked how much longer. The hostess said we were next. However we actually weren't next she still sat another family ahead of us. After we ordered we waited another 55 minutes for our food to arrive. We understand it's not a fast food place but that is a really long to wait for food after you order it. Especially when they are not at full capacity. If your willing to kill 2-3 hours at dinner it's a good place. Waiting for a table for that long didn't bother us it was after we were ordered that it seemed to take a really long time. My friends and I had a wait time for 1 hour and 30 minutes so you know we came at a very busy time. Food: During the time, we were here the physical menu prices are outdated so you will need to scan the QR code to see their updated menu and price. Most of the dishes were 2 or 4 dollar increase. I went with the Fried Chicken & Waffles ($14). The waffles was a great combination with the fried chicken - I did regret not trying the spicy chicken, but instead I chickened out and went with the basic. The food and service were great. Loved the atmosphere. Even though the food was good, I was a little disappointed with the crab bisque. It was delicious, but arrived at the table cold. I believe it sat out for a while. My second complaint is that the kale on my shrimp and mushrooms were not wilted as described in the description. My last and biggest complaint is that all of our food items arrived to the table at the same time. I tried to delay submitting our entrees but the waitress wanted everything at one time. I always try to delay placing my entree order to prevent this from happening. I was not successful this time due to the waitress asking for our entire order. If the procedure is to take the customers' entire order, then the kitchen and server need to develop a system that will allow guests to enjoy their appetizers before their entrees arrive at the table. First I want to be clear - My meal was ok but not 5 stars. I got the 1885 burger and the meat quality was good but in the effort to be fancy with the sauce, it was very salty. Next, I got the fries but they were cold and soggy but not as salty as the burger ironically. My wife got the filet and she said it was good. We needed to find something outdoors, kid-friendly, and outside the "bustle" of the downtown area, so off we went to St. Elmo for dinner. The wait was scheduled to be 45 minutes so we took a walk around the block, and lucky for us (and our hungry kids) the wait ended up being only 20 minutes. We started things off with a ginger beer and hush puppies. The ginger beer was... fruitier... than usual, and not quite as spicy as other ginger beers, but still good. The hush puppies, though: those were fantastic. Perfectly crisp on the outside, slightly seasoned and full of corn flavor on the inside. Yum. For an entree, my general rule is anytime étouffée is on the menu, I get the étouffée. Instead of rice, I substituted grits, which comes with a further option: fried, or creamy. Both intrigued me, so I got half and half. I am happy to say that dish delivered on all fronts. The creamy grits were perfectly rich and coarser than usual, but soft throughout. The crispy grits had the look and exterior of a hash brown, but the interior of... rich and creamy grits. I have no idea how they did it, but it was delicious. On top was crawfish as well as large and mini shrimp. These were tender and cooked perfectly. Finally, the roux was well-browned and brought it all together; it comes regular and spicy, and the regular has just a bit of a "kick" to it. If you have lowcountry familiarity, consider adding a bit of spice. Overall, a satisfying Southern food experience. read more

I came to this amazing restaurant after our trip to Rock City. There is beautiful outdoor seating that gives you great views of the lookout mountain Incline roadway. This restaurant had a little bit of a wait, but it was worth it for its amazing food! Our waitress was super friendly and amazing and got a little water bowl for our dog. One of my favorite dishes of all time is shrimp and grits and let me tell you, I think this is one of the best shrimp and grits I had ever had in my life. They cooked the jumbo shrimp to perfection. The grits can be made both ways, a crispy grits cake and old fashion creamy grits. Get BOTH!!! I also ordered the mimosa that was delicious! I loved the restaurant from its friendly service, the amazing shrimp and grits and the dog friendly patio. Its a must come if you are in Chattanooga. read more
