On Saturday, I was itching to get out and do something after practicing social distancing all week. I saw that 16 Tons was still doing growler fills so I thought I would go give them some support. I appreciated that the employee thoroughly washed the growler and used a food safe sanitizer. I had her fill the growler with a coconut stout that was on tap and it was the exact thing I was craving for a Saturday afternoon. It was nice to get out for a split second and have a lovely conversation with someone outside the home. I'm grateful to these businesses that are staying open during these tough times. read more

Nice joint, but meh. I like 16 Tons, but I don't like the $2 corkage fee for a beer (and cider). Really? I can understand a corkage fee on a bottle of wine, but a corkage fee on a beer?! Wow. A corkage fee for a bottle from outside the store seems reasonable, but one from the establishment itself seems ridiculous. Strange concept that I do not like. I do like the growler option and the half pint option, though I'm used to the practice of getting growlers from the brewery rather than a bar that happens to have the beer on tap. I also like the HUGE selection of beers. 18 beers on tap is good. Service is great. Their payment set up looks like something macgyvered up by some techie. Anyway, you can get 10% off by becoming a member, which costs $20. I'm not too impressed with this place. The set up looks like it cuts corners to save money, yet the place charges a corkage fee. *EDIT. I forgot to mention that you should be sure to add a tip before. Just tell the cashier that you want to add a few bucks for tip because their payment system does not print out a tip line since it's different than the normal payment system. Just a note that when the guy asked me if I wanted to add tip, I gladly did because it only makes sense because 1. I'm drinking at the bar, 2. the bartender was nice and helpful, 3. who doesn't tip a bartender? read more

This place is great to be a regular at, the people that work here are so nice and are helpful when needing a recommendation. Their selection is very extensive and if they don't have it (doubtful) they'll help you find something similar. A lot of customers that come in are really into beer and are nice so it's a good place to strike up conversation with nice people. It's a great environment, relaxing with good tunes. read more

We need more places like this in the world. My wife and I, along with another couple were looking for a place to play a loud and obnoxious round of Cards Against Humanity. We followed Yelp's guidance and found ourselves at 16 Tons. The gentleman at the bar was helpful and quite knowledgeable about the beer, cider, and wine available. I had a draft brew which was quite delicious, but then I realized... why not just spend 1.50 and drink a bottle or can of beer? I absolutely love beer on tap, but sometimes I just want to drink away from home. Right? "Bump, bump, bump it up." 16 Tons is a gem in the Emerald City. Everything about this place confirms my belief that my town is much cooler than yours. Grab a pint or a half pint of the twelve beers they have on tap and then feast your eyes upon beervana. They do tastings, classes, and have a fantastic weekly newsletter. They are greener than most other bottle shops because they don't waste energy on coolers. They have growlers you can buy and fill full of beer and drink all by yourself when your woman leaves town. Located downtown Eugene, so no specific parking lot. Could be a problem if downtown is hopping. The guy who was pouring was very friendly and knew his beers. The estuarine itself was a little small and could easily be too busy at prime hours. As far as the beers go? Awesome taplist! I've been looking for a place with Sticky Hands by Block 15, and they had it on tap and bottled! They also had about 5 taps of Boneyard which is an incredible brewery that doesn't bottle, which makes it hard to find. The bottle selection is great as well. They don't have long coolers to store their beer, but the beers are good and unique enough that it's not necessary. I'd definitely come back to see what they have on tap! read more

This place is a class act and it's really growing on me with every newletter and tasting event. I dig how they treat beer like wine, with the isles full of uniquely curated finds. They always have a bunch of interesting brews on tap and the staff is happy to talk about their nuances and let you taste before choosing. If you're a beer geek or (like me) you just hang out with a bunch of them, you should become acquainted with the folks at Sixteen Tons as soon as possible. They have all the fancy beer that you never knew you wanted. They have extensive knowledge of their stock and can recommend a product to you no matter your preference. They also have killer beer tastings; sign up for their mailing list to get reminders for upcoming tastings. The tastings aren't free but usually only cost a buck or two. I think it's a reasonable price considering the portions and that they don't pressure you to buy anything. Take your beer snob friends and you'll be sure to impress them! read more

16 Tons opened just before I moved from Eugene in August 2010, and I didn't get a chance to stop in before I left. So when I returned to visit, I was happy to go here with a friend when we needed to pick up some beers. I was amazed with the selection - not sprawling, as I'm used to here in the midwest, but focused, and excellent. As a bonus, 16 Tons also serves beer on tap - for consumption in the store, in pints, or to take home in growlers. They don't serve food, but that's almost a plus, since you can bring in your own food from a handful of excellent nearby restaurants like the High St McMenamin's, La Perla, and Dickie Jo's. (Ok, I've never actually been to Dickie Jo's, but I've been told it's excellent.) The only bad thing I can say about 16 Tons is that right now, it's too far from where I'm living in Cincinnati, OH. I look forward to remedying that situation when I move back to Eugene in May. After that, I surmise that you'll be seeing me at 16 Tons A LOT. read more

Not a bad bottle shop for those who are into beer, or just looking for something less common than BMC or Ninkasi/Oakshire. You can get Ninkasi and Oakshire, but they're common in the Eugene-Springfield area. Where 16 Tons shines is in less common beers from around the US and Europe. Good selection of sours, for example. The prices are reasonable, as are the beers on tap. No food available here, other than what you bring in yourself. This shop excels, though, in the tap list. 16 Tons has 18 taps of unique beers, while The Bier Stein only has 10. Generally a fairly varied selection too. 16 Tons has far fewer bottle selections (350+?) than The Bier Stein (1000?), but may have some beers not available down the street. With McMenamins High Street and The Bier Stein within a 2 block distance this area might now be beer central in Eugene. read more

Unpretentious, friendly but not gushing, knowledgeable staff, very approachable. Outstanding selection of bottles, some quite rare and hard to find, and ten rotating draft taps on the beer side, excellent and eclectic wine and sake selection as well. Rather remarkable tasting events, with fast accurate service. Lack of coolers for bottled beer is an environmentally friendly choice, plus probably helps keep costs and prices down. I think this store compares favorably with City Beer in San Francisco, although not in the seating arrangements. For a small market like Eugene, this place is remarkable and much better than it needs to be. There are now 18 rotating taps and more seating arrangements. The beers on tap are unusual (but also have the local usual suspects, such as Ninkasi and Oakshire), excellent, presented well, and you can order half pints, which greatly increases the sampling opportunities. read more

Hands-down my favorite watering hole in Eugene-- mainly because it's not really a bar. Think of it as the Beirstein's cooler, younger sibling. The first time I went here the guy serving us was extremely attentive and helpful. I'm a real beer connoisseur, so it's good to check in with the staff to see what's new in the beer world. I thought the selection of draft beer was incredible and the prices were reasonable. The second time I went here I was served by some goth chick that ignored me and my friend, talked incessantly with one of the other employees who was leaving for the day, and was just generally rude. She didn't seem to know anything about beer and she did everything possible to avoid talking to me or my friend when we had questions about the various brews on tap. I had a very unpleasant experience. I think they have a great selection of beer to go. I bought several reasonably priced bottles and cans that I thoroughly enjoyed back at my house. The Beer Stein has a larger selection, and all the Beer Stein's beers are refrigerated, but I thought the prices and selection were better at 16 Tons. BUT, and this is a BIG BUT, I was really displeased by the on-site consumption policy at 16 Tons. I bought a can of beer for about $1.75 and I had to pay an extra $1.00 to drink it on premises. That's a pretty hefty markup to pay for EACH beer you want to drink on premises, which is the policy I was told they enforce. The Beer Stein has a more reasonable percentage markup for the beer you want to drink on premises. Paying a 50+% premium to drink a cheap can, or bottle, of beer just doesn't make sense. I will gladly pay an extra $1.00 to drink a more expensive beer on premises, but the cheaper beers shouldn't require such a steep on-premises fee. I'm sure if I go back a third time my last bad experience will fade from memory. Hopefully they fired the bad server. read more

Great selection! Small and dark store but they get a lot of craft beer I can't find elsewhere. Only a few coolers for fresh IPAs, everything else goes on shelves. I've compared prices with other bottleshops in town and 16 Tons wins out quite often. I first came here for one of their beer tastings they often do. I kept coming back because of the great selection and great service I got from the owners. The two guys who run the place are very knowledgeable and can always offer a great choice for whatever your tastes might be. What makes this place better than most is that I, although I love beer, have a limited knowledge of types and tastes but not once have either of them made me feel intimidated or tried to talk over my head. Anyway, check it out. They have a great location and are one of the few places in downtown Eugene with a parking lot. This is a great place to sample the largest variety of beer on tap in town. The Beer Stein is right up there too but this place has more taps. If you want you can also buy smaller amounts of beer so you can sample more varieties. My only problem with the place is they need more chairs. There are a few but mainly they have many of these tall tables that you can stand next to. There could be a plan to this madness, if you can't stand up it might be time to go home, but what fun is that? read more

My husband and I really love good beer. Yes, some might (our friends do) call us beer snobs. When we moved to Eugene, the first thing we wanted to do was find a good bottle shop in the area, and that's exactly what we found in 16 Tons. When we first started going, the service was "meh" (at the taproom). Not overly friendly, not rude. We feel it has definitely gotten better in the past month or so--maybe it's because they recognize us? We mainly go to the taproom but recently visited the cafe during one of their special events. The taproom is definitely more laid back as far as atmosphere and number of patrons compared to the cafe. Of course, the cafe serves food (which we have yet to try), so this might be a better option for those of you looking for the dinner/beer experience. On the other hand, because the taproom doesn't serve food, they allow you to bring in outside food, which is a great option. We've even brought in our own food from home to snack on while we consumed most our calories via beer:) If you end up going to 16 Tons and are a beer lover like us (and plan to be back), definitely sign up for a membership. There is an initial up front cost to become a member, but you get a discount on your purchases for a year. **Compared to the Bier Stein, we tend to gravitate towards 16 Tons because it's just not as crowded. The Bier Stein has more cold beers (all of them in refrigerators) and a great selection, but 16 Tons has enough beers on tap to try an interesting selection of beer without feeling like you have to grab a bottle. I love the low key atmosphere, and regularly suggest this place as a meeting spot. My wife loves it here. Both locations are good but different. Staff is always friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I really like that you can taste a beer before deciding to get a pint. Liked this place enough my son gave me a membership for my birthday. Not sure where to put this comment. I love the coffee and highly recommend the Water Street coffee. I buy it by the pound and even send it to my daughter living in Mississippi. Try it, you won't be sorry. Super low key tap room and bottle shop. This is the place to go in Eugene to get the best beers. Not much seating, but it's always very quiet and never overly busy. It's not really the same vibe as a typical bar, and that is definitely not a bad thing. Extremely knowledgeable staff and a wide variety of beers to take home. This is my favorite place to meet up, have a few beers and relax for an evening. What's even better is sending pictures of the taplist back to my brother in Chicago as a way of bragging. I've been here a few times, and so far so good. Love the selection of beers on tap, and more importantly they host a weekly trivia night. So if you need a weekday excursion, not a bad place to go. The space is fairly spacious for how small it might seem, and the patio area is fabulous when the warm weather gets going. Nestled between Market of Choice, Pegasus Pizza and Laughing planet you really can't go wrong. They have a limited amount of food on the menu but seem to be okay with outside food...please don't quote me on that. 16 Tons seem to host a number of events including the Cheese Wars which I am more than sad that I could not get ahold of tickets for. They play host to a number of beers on tap, such as: NInkasi, Sierra Nevada, Breakside, Lagunitas, Oakshire, Archrock, and Silver Moon Maui, to name a few. Tap rooms with growler fill stations have popped up all over town in the last year or so, so many that I can't imagine they can all survive. Do that many people want a place to drink pints and carry home jugs of harder to find brews, and pay a premium for it? I come here occasionally to see what's on offer, and maybe learn something about beer I didn't know. On my last trip I sampled a stout made with oyster shells, which the guy at the counter said was done to add mineral qualities. I took a taste, and I admit I couldn't find much minerality in the usual roasty stout flavor. They also had an apple cider with hops added, which I didn't try but found intriguing. I ended up taking home a nice IPA, which I enjoyed with dinner. I don't usually hang out here, but the atmosphere is relaxed and conducive to quiet conversation, not something you usually see in a beer joint. Not serving food is a downside, but they will let you bring in your own. I treat it like a weekend retreat. read more

This many rotating tap handles is reason enough for an update. I am always impressed with the compliment of draft to bottles because there are so many beers in both categories that aren't available in the other. Good job maintaining focus on unique and interesting styles to choose from in both. I hesitate to give five stars because of lack of adequate identification of taps and info about them with so much rotation. It is fun to try different things but getting the proper information about them will make remembering them much easier. Perhaps a 16 tons tasting notebook for regulars? For the record, I have been coming here for about six months and have never had a problem. This bottle bar actually became my go-to place because I really enjoyed the atmosphere, it is walking distance from my house, the beers were good, inexpensive and the service was pretty good! Unfortunately my rating of a 5 star now goes down to a 1 star. My favorite bartender was working, which I knew because I purposely go there while he is there. Recently they changed the corkage fee to $1 for every beer opened that is not on tap. All I asked was that my favorite bartender re-lay the message to the owner that my friends and I have stopped frequently going to this bar because we do not want to pay $1 for every beer we open there. I suggested that maybe he offer corkage fee (suggested $5-$7) flat rate for parties greater than four. He told he that he was not going to tell the owner my request. I referred to myself as a poor college student (I have money but its limited) and persisted to reason with him about how it could be beneficial to relay my message, His response multiple times was: "We do not want poor college students in this bar". When I expressed that classifying me as poor was offensive, he responded by saying that is what I said about myself. I understand that maybe your business model does not aim to bring in a younger group of people, but mind you- I am a 26 year old non-traditional/pre-medical student who primarily hangs out with graduate students and post-graduate students. Also, if you open a bar in a college town, you should aim to bring in business from every avenue, maybe even particularly college students considering you...opened a bar in a college town? He also made some kind of reference about young people in college living off the pell-grant, and how that was just not what the business model wants to see in its shop...wow. Very community oriented? I don't think so. On top of this - I was wearing a shirt that said Nasty Woman, which the bartender kindly asked me as I walked in, what that meant. I explained briefly that it referred to when Donald Trump called Hillary Clinton a nasty woman during the third presidential debate. The woman who created this shirt states: "The degradation women often face isn't a secret, but seeing it on a national stage felt different. If showing up a prepared, confident woman is "nasty" in the eyes of such a reprehensible man, then I'm proud to be nasty." This campaign raised over $1M for planned parenthood from the sales of these shirts. So...the point of me explaining this is that as our heated discussion about the corkage fee came to an end, the bartender said "maybe you are a nasty woman", without enough context or knowledge of how that may be very offensive. My friend and I decided to leave even though we were only half-done with our beers because that is when we decided not to support this business any longer. I will not be going back to this bar ever again, and I am sure "all of my poor "college" friends "living off the pell-grant" will not be coming back here either. I will make sure to tell everyone I know not to come here, and refer them to go to Bier Stein down the street instead, where all you can get a multitude of quality craft beers (corkage fee included in the price), at $2.20 per can or bottle, with plenty of extra cash to tip well- while not getting too spendy and still supporting a local business that does not judge you based on your social class. read more

Interior is attractive and I had high hopes on my first visit, but found the coffee over roasted and bitter. My husband wanted a 16 oz iced coffee but was told the biggest they sell is 12 oz......odd. They have a bottle selection that is better or compares to any other place in Eugene, the only problem is they don't have a refrigeration system yet. They make up for it though with the lowest prices in town, and it's nothing that cant be solved with an hour in the refrigerator at home. 16 Tons has a rotating selecting of kegs on tap which they sell pints, mason jar, and growler pours depending on your need. Try going to The Bier Stein and asking for more than two tastes, they'll turn you away. I hate investing $6 for a pint of beer and not liking it. 16 Tons has growler specials and will also order cases of beer cheaper than anyone in town. The staff is mellow and always loves to talk about beer. You can also bring food from outside. Go to a cart and pick up some great cheap food and bring it to 16 Tons for the best beer in town. A small local beer spot with several tables, bottled imports, and growlers to go. the beer selection is decent, but when i see Ninkasi on tap i'm thinking, "who goes to 16 tons to buy a pint of Ninkasi?" 'get a pint of that anywhere, and it's an average beer at that- so why? A good Euro beer is somewhat difficult to find in Eugene, but i did find a Belgium beer at 16 tons that was hands down the best beer i had in years. Smooth, strong (9.1%), full bodied, wonderful bouquet that has me wondering why all beer isn't made that way. i do suggest asking for a sample before paying 6 bucks for an 8 oz glass of unfamiliar and possibly crappy beer. be careful. read more
