I had high expectations from this place as I hard heard so many great reviews. Unfortunately, none of them were met. Service was poor, staff wasn't friendly, beer selections were average, it's too small, and they don't refrigerate most of their bottled beer. Always spend my class breaks here when I'm in eugene. Been going here since the beginning and really enjoyed the staff. They were smart and happy to help. This is a small place, that has an ENORMOUS selection of bottled beers, quite a few varieties of wine, as well as some decent offerings of cold hard cider. They have a great rotating tap selection, that you can view online, and host various beer tasting/festivals to help you taste some of the great varieties of beer and cider in the world. They do not serve food, but do allow you to bring food in, which I do sometimes if I know a group of us will be camped out at one of the 7-8 tables. If you like good beer, at 16 Tons you will find a knowledgeable staffer or even one of the owners to help you find MORE that could be to your liking. I must confess, my first impression was something to the effect of, "Look at those sideburns. This must be hipster central." Since then, however, I have repeatedly been proven wrong. These guys know their sh*t. They consistently go the extra mile to meet the needs of their customers while also (upon request) helpfully pushing the boundaries of their palettes. As a real beer enthusiast, I am frequently taken aback at the quality of beers they have in store and how they constantly manage to bring in new beers I've never heard of. The staff are also not the type of beer geeks to judge or turn their nose up at those who are just entering the world of craft beer. Far from snobs, these guys are simply interested in sharing good beer. Price-wise, these guys are also the best in town. Their pint rates are standard, their growler prices are great, but their bottle prices are easily the best in town. Easily beating out the only other bottle shop in town, as well as the larger grocers that sell craft beer and imports, 16 tons is the way to go. read more

Sad to say I'm not a member but my brother is so 16 tons is always his pick to meet at for happy hour. I love the selection and the holiday tasting event turned me on to some amazing beers that I would've been afraid to try because of their bottle price but after tasting I will buy! I am of the mind set that beer and coffee are as complex as wine and therefore should be priced accordingly and more consumers should be informed of this. Someone spent a lot of hard work crafting it to perfection and your bar tender/barista has to learn about each and everyone in order to serve it you. I felt like I was in cheers when the owner walked in, he knew almost everyone and if he didn't he introduced himself. My husband and I had a 30 min conversation with him about beer and he told us of places to go in Portland. This is one of the only place in Eugene where the owner is visibly hands on & personally making his customers happy and he knows what it is to support other business'. The cafe on 29th is amazing!!!! They are serving Water Ave coffee to its true potential unlike The Barn Light. Every coffee drink I've had was steamed to perfection, The Barn Light on the other hand don't seem to know the difference between a latte & a cappuccino and their lattes aren't reach & creamy. On a recent visit to Water Ave in Portland while talking to a barista it came up that I was from Eugene and she said oh you can get our coffee at The Barn Light so I told her that I've had poor drinks from them but the 16 tons cafe has them and is doing an excellent job. Better than anything we have in SF. There are so many interesting beers on tap in addition to the great bottle selection. PLUS there's wine, which is pretty much just gilding the lily. The staff are really friendly and I like the space and seating available. I'm jealous. read more

If you love beer you're going to love 16 Tons! With more rotating taps then you can count on both hands and a massive bottle selection your taste buds will never be board. The staff is incredibly nice and always helpful. The only down side to this place is that they don't serve food-but you're more than welcome to bring food in and there are alot of choices within walking distance. I've even been known to grab a sandwich to go from the bier stein. ;-) Oh I almost forgot they have true pints (larger glasses so you get a full pint of beer) and cheap cheater pints which are the glasses every one else uses. And a club to join for even cheaper beer . If you have a wine person in your party they have a great wine selection too. read more

Great selection of bottles. Perhaps not as many as Bier Stein, but they more then make up for that with the quality of the selection. The Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful with selections. Always a good variety of beers on tap. Many brews on tap, that I have never had before and that is always a good thing. The folks behind the bar are always way cool and super informative. Some beer spots are run by beer snobs that are assholes, but the beer snobs here are pleasant! There are so many places in eugene to eat and drink that I feel are way better than this place. My husband and I always look forward to swinging by 16 Tons at the end of a long week. We love to take our time and pick out a couple of bottles off the wall that we maybe have never tried before or that might go particularly well with what we are having for dinner that night. They have a great selection, good prices and I actually appreciate that they have a lot of Northwest options vs nothing but imports. A real treat is if the owner, Mike is there because he can help you pick out that perfect bottle that you might otherwise have overlooked. They are also a good alternative to a bar (or the Bier Stein, which as a good selection but let's admit is NOISY) to grab a quick pint with some friends as they always have a good selection of craft brews on draft. We recently experienced some confusion on our part regarding a recent purchase but the owner went out of his way to remedy this and we continue to look forward to the next weekend so we can choose that perfect brew for a Saturday night... read more

I'm learning the various local beer spots here in Oregon, and I ran into this place by accident on the way to McMenamin's High Street.......a very good accident! I was very pleased by the selection of quality microbrews, particularly from Oregon breweries. Yeah, they aren't necessarily the most competitively priced, say compared to a big grocery chain, or to a BevMo type retailer, but that isn't really there market niche.
