    Some whiskey choices

This place was excellent! [[HIGHLIGHT]]This has an open kitchen and is small but spacious. Hugh ceilings and nice clean design.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We came for Christmas Day and I thanked the cooks and servers for working the holiday. The drinks were unique and the service was great! One of the best steaks I've ever had! I love peppercorns on my steak! Not the gravy stuff but just the peppercorns. So good! The scotch egg is everything. I've made them and they are difficult. This was a duck egg! The Beet Salad was hearty and yummy. Sweet and tangy.

I popped into 1540 Room during my stay at The DeSoto. The restaurant staff was very friendly. The gentleman at the hostess stand was full of energy and suggestions and a really great start to my day. I came in for breakfast before heading out for the day and they offer quite a few filling breakfast options. I had the avocado toast that's topped with as egg, spinach, and tomatoes. So delicious and it carried me at least until lunch. I also stopped in before leaving and picked-up breakfast to-go. The smoked salmon and toasted bagel with accruements were perfect to eat on my way to the airport. Overall, 1540 Room is a good option for breakfast or if you just don't feel like venturing outside of the hotel to find food.

Disappointed in my dining experience. Had the steak, which was prepared "ok" but wasn't great - the veg side though tasted just like they look. Burnt and unseasoned. Odd for a place claiming to be inspired by the spice trade to have literally no seasoning on the sides. Potatoes were underdone and had just a pinch of salt. No condiments at the table so no way to rectify. Maybe it was someone's first day in the kitchen or something but a downer for sure. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Normally I enjoy watching an open kitchen, but in this case the exhaust fans aren't adequate, so there's a low level haze clouding the dining area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Kind of like dining in a bit of smog, and if you enjoy smelling like you were working the grill yourself for the rest of the night, place is for you. Service was very disjointed. Polite enough, but slow. Not busy but plates sat under the heat lamp ignored. When things were picked up to be delivered, the staff seemed confused on which table they should be delivered to... leading to more than once a plate being put down on a incorrect table... only to be picked up and delivered somewhere else. Maybe I'm a little fussy on cleanliness, but I would not want my plate after it's had a visit to another table! And weirdly, was never shown a cocktail menu, only a beer and wine list. Not sure if dropping cocktails is a recent change? Disappointed in that as some other reviews had nice photos of cocktails and I was looking forward to sampling. All in all, for this price point I think you can do better in Savannah.

The 1540 room is an open air restaurant in the Desoto Hotel. Waters are attentive and very helpful. Excellent extensive wine collection which has been awarded by Wine Spectator. The raw oyster appetizer was excellent. The steak tartare was one of the best I have had. We both got the catch of the day which was pan-fried snapper on a bed of fall vegetables-excellently done. If you want a special meal while in Savannah, check out the 1540 Room!

Service was excellent. Cauliflower app, oysters, beets, and pasta were all good. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is very nice and spacious inside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I would def recommend.

We went here for my husband's birthday and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the restaurant is beautiful.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I enjoyed the mentioned his birthday as that was in the reservation. We had the pork chop and the steak and both were very good. I appreciated that they allowed a substitution of potatoes for the grits. The service was a little slow but it appeared they may have been short staffed as the server we had seemed to be performing several roles. Would definitely recommend.

Great flavors from locally source ingredients, low music and lighting, and something for just about everyone on the menu. We came here for my birthday dinner through a reservation. We parked valet because they validate the parking (so if you eat before a Johnny Mercer theater show for example, it's a good place to park and eat). 1540 Manhattan - smooth. A solid cocktail choice. She asked my Bourbon choice but I would have wanted a list of there were many. Table bread - sadly no gluten-free bread option. Comes with two thick slices with butter already spread on them. Alex said the bread might be undercooked. Whipped Tahini - definitely an appetizer to share. It comes with a LOT of tahini. I liked this. Beets - came with 3 beer wedges with various toppings. I'm not usually a fan of beets. The toppings didn't add much for me but I liked them with the tahini! For mains: Confit Duck Leg - my favorite was the gluten-free red corn grit cake. It is like a crispy polenta but with a chunkier rather than gritty texture. If it could be crisper, it would be phenomenal. I loved the edges for that reason. The duck leg was a little dry but the greens and hot (read: spicy) honey balance it out. The flavor was great on the duck though. Pork Chop - huge! It came with sweet potatoes, a little salad side, and a little puree underneath. Alex wishes there was a sauce rather than a puree. Dessert: Meringue - the gluten-free options was this, the Sholeh Zard (kind of rice pudding) or ice cream. I needed something light after eating so much so went with the meringue. The meringue bigger than I thought it would be. I loved that and the raspberry topping. Our waiter told us it was made from the duck egg whites where the duck egg yolks are used in other dishes. Cool! Our waiter was friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu and gluten-free options.

Make a reservation while you can! The chef is a rising star. We were visiting Savannah for a week and enjoyed many of the top restaurants and bars. A friend of ours mentioned the 1540 Room and said we must try the steak tartar. I haven't had steak tartar in years and I was intrigued that a young chef would take on this classic dish. It was amazing! Topping the tartar is a house made marinated duck yoke that pares perfectly with the hand cut, locally sourced beef. Im sorry I missed taking a photo because the presentation was so much fun I forgot. My husband and I selected wines by the glass. Our server Kelly has a beyond typical knowledge of the wine list and excellent service skills. You can tell he is a professional from the moment you enter the dining room. After our steak tartar experience, we shared an autumn salad with smoked beets and butternut squash, yum. For our mains we had the homemade lamb sausage with couscous and the roast duck. Both were locally sourced, home made sausages and delicious. For desert Kelly suggested a glass of sparkling to pair with our Housemaid meringue, ice cream and topped with a fresh peach sauce. This was the end to a perfect evening and the highlight of our trip. We look forward to returning to see what the chef is planning next.

Excellent old fashion drink and a pineapple upside down cake drink. Atmosphere was beautiful and the staff pleasant. It's located inside the DeSoto hotel.

We recently had a great experience at the 1540 room. Chef Colin has been making a good name for himself this year in Savannah and his food lived up to the hype. The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful, one of the prettiest dining rooms in the city that I have experienced. We were greeted by the General Manager, Andrew, who welcomed us in and took us on a tour of the menu. We started with the raw oysters, which were fabulous. Some of the best I've had, although not from the area. The mignonette was a great paring. For the entree we had the Roasted hen and the Turkish manti. I expected a lot more out of the Turkish manti, it wasn't very delicious and the sauce base it was served in wasn't complimenting it well either. Wouldn't order that dish again. However, the roasted hen was one of the best dishes I've had this season in Savannah. Probably one of the best cooked hens I have enjoyed and the seasoning was to perfection. The curry sauce was delicious that pared with it. Overall the experience was outstanding and I can not wait to come back and try new things out on the menu!

    Manhattan with brûléed cherry

My family and I decided to go to the 1540 Room pretty last minute due to some reservation issues with our original plan, but we still wanted a nice dinner to celebrate my brother's birthday. We had no prior experience or knowledge of the restaurant and were extremely pleased with our experience. For starters, the entire staff was incredibly nice. Our waitress and the host were welcoming, knowledgeable about the menu, and attentive. Not once did we have to wait for a refill of water or an offer of another drink. Our empty plates were cleared quickly, our dirty utensils were replaced between each course without us asking, and the staff were very understanding and engaged with us. The bartender was also very kind, charismatic, and excellent at his job. All our drinks that night were fabulous. My mother ordered a Manhattan and told our waitress it was the best Manhattan she'd ever had. Our bartender brought her second drink with an extra special brûléed cherry on top as a small thank you for the compliment. This small gesture absolutely warmed our hearts and made the experience even better. My brother even received a free unique birthday cocktail as a celebratory treat, which was unexpected and truly appreciated. He said it was delicious. As for the food, it was immaculate. Our waitress explained that the ingredients are fresh and sourced directly from local farms. We were given free house made bread with a house made whipped butter. It was soft and flavorful and a an amazing warm, savory treat to start with. We ordered two appetizers: whipped tahini and shishito peppers. Both had such great taste. For mains, we had the ginger saffron chicken, coulette steak, merguez lamb sausages, and the local catch of grouper. All of which had unique flavors and were insanely tasty. Needless to say, all the plates were cleared, and we'd recommend all the dishes we had. For dessert, we decided on the seasonal berry tart, which was one of the most delicious plates we had. It was just absolutely perfect. Overall, this was the best experience we've had during our entire trip to Savannah. This restaurant will forever be a staple in our family visits, and we had such an amazing experience that we're still talking about it hours later.

I ended up coming here for a private event so I wasn't able to experience the restaurant part. But we did get a sample of the food and it was amazing! We had everything from tarts to lamb and salmon. The atmosphere was cozy and everything was beautiful. I would definitely come back!

I cannot say enough good things about this place! Located inside a hotel, do not sleep on this place! A farm to table style restaurant with an open kitchen and everything is made from scratch. It's a unique menu as the chef is pulling in different dishes/flavors from different regions, but they are phenomenal! I wanted to try everything on the menu! Also a pretty extensive wine menu (by glass and bottle -bottle they had a great selection of varied prices and styles). Several cocktails and beer as well! Service was great! I know they are still a bit short staffed, but our waters were never empty, and the food came out quickly! Our server Kelly was very personable and made our time there very enjoyable! We ordered: Hummus ($12) - while this may sound pretty basic, the hummus was fantastic. A lot of different flavors and the pita came out hot and fresh! Recommend! Merguez ($29) - phenomenal and complex! The sauce was delicious and the lamb sausage was very fresh and cooked perfectly. The cilantro on top is the perfect touch to balance all the flavors out! Highly recommend! Turkish Manti ($26) - while it's called a ravioli, it is pretty similar to a dumpling size and shape. Stuffed with lamb and covered in a type of tomato sauce with the garlic yogurt to add creaminess. Fantastic and also highly recommend! The portions were perfect, we left stuffed! We thoroughly enjoyed the freshness of everything and how unique the dishes were! Add this to your list of Savannah restaurants to visit!

It was giving chain restaurant a little more than I expected. We tried the grilled oyster sampler, and while they all looked slightly different, somehow they all tasted like variations of Rockefeller. I could not tell you which was which. The she-crab soup? Absolutely not. Zero flavor. I took one bite and sent it back, and I rarely send food back. The shrimp & grits were... interesting. Very sweet, very corn-forward, and the texture was more porridge/cream of wheat than the thick, savory grits I had in mind. Was it terrible? No. On a rainy day, I could actually see myself eating a bowl of it. But if you tell me shrimp & grits, my mouth has already prepared for something completely different. Now--the fried green tomatoes? THAT was the star. Crispy, topped with a little crab salad and this hot sauce that pulled the whole thing together. The crab cakes were pretty solid too, especially with the two sauces, and the collard greens were tender and well done. Overall, I'd come back for lunch, oysters, drinks and a few appetizers. But dinner reservation? I'm not jumping through hoops. Savannah has too many really good restaurants for that. 3/5 -- cute, fun, a few hits, but the food needed a little more love.

Been here for both dinner and lunch. All this said, I think my approach to this review is comprehensive. With regard to food, I think they have a decent (not expansive) selection of food, which I think lends itself to quality. They do most things really well. This said, I do think there is inconsistency based on staff at the restaurant. On one occasion they have accommodated a request, and on another I was denied the exact same request. I found this frustrating. On one occasion I've also seen management talk down to staff here, which is a big no no for me. All people (especially staff) are due respect and this rubbed me the wrong way. This was an isolated incident but it definitely made my dining experience uncomfortable. Especially because I was getting excellent service from the server!!! I've always had quality service from servers here. In the future, I would come to Rhett for convenience as a hotel guest (the hotel is lovely), but would likely not spend my money if I wasn't staying at the hotel. Overall- it's good food, decent ambiance... but there are soooo many good options in Savannah. You have to be exceptional to stand out in that city.

That search led me to The Olde Pink House--a magnificent historic mansion dating back to 1771, now home to one of Savannah's most memorable restaurants. The décor is beautiful, with antique furnishings, fireplaces, elegant woodwork, chandeliers, and enough historical character to make any ghost hunter feel immediately at home. The building is surprisingly large, with numerous dining rooms, each decorated and arranged differently. Exploring it feels almost like wandering through a well-preserved haunted mansion--though thankfully, the staff were much friendlier than the ghosts I had recently captured. The food was excellent, and everyone in our party enjoyed what they ordered. I'm not usually much of a beer drinker, but I tried the Hostess City, a craft beer brewed exclusively for The Olde Pink House, and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Our server was wonderful, and we were even able to exchange ghost stories with them. We all had a good laugh, although I'm fairly certain one of the portraits nearby was laughing along with us. We arrived dressed entirely in black, and not a single person batted an eye. In Savannah, this is apparently considered perfectly respectable evening attire--or perhaps everyone simply assumed we were attending a funeral for one of the restless dead. After dinner, we asked whether we could explore the other sections of the restaurant, and we were told it would be no problem. We were able to visit the different dining rooms and examine the antiques and objects respectfully without disturbing the other guests. Be sure to visit the bar downstairs, Planters Tavern. It has a wonderfully haunted atmosphere, with brick walls, old-world décor, and a beautiful fireplace that must be especially inviting during the winter months. The basement's fireplaces were reportedly part of the home's original kitchen, which only adds to the feeling that the room remembers far more than it lets on. The Olde Pink House offers excellent food, beautiful surroundings, friendly service, and just enough supernatural atmosphere to keep a ghost hunter interested. I arrived looking for somewhere to recover from the night's haunting. I left well fed, pleasantly spirits-laden, and only mildly concerned that one of the ghosts may have followed me home.

I finally stopped in after dinner hours around 7pm on Friday. Since it was date night we ordered the raw tower, which comes stacked with everything under the sun: oysters, shrimp, snow crab, lobster and mussels. I also ordered scallops and asked if it could be prepared without butter because of my dairy allergy. The kitchen has no problem making them with olive oil instead. Super delicious! I enjoyed it so much that I came back the following weekend with friends. I made reservations online during happy hour (4-6pm) and we were lucky enough to be seated in the small back dining room tucked away behind the bar. Our server was wonderful and very attentive, and I especially appreciated that she actually paid attention to the allergy notes I included with my reservations. Of course we all ordered a dozen oysters each because they're $1 during happy hour and who can beat that? I ordered the scallops again because I liked them so much the first time, and around the table we had a mixture of lobster, mussels, dressed oysters, turtle cheesecake, finishing everything off with espresso martinis. Hands down delicious. The service was top-tier too. Our server never hovered, but somehow always checked on us at just the right time and made sure we had everything we needed. Sitting along the river while watching massive cargo ships slowly make their way toward the Atlantic creates one of those uniquely Savannah experiences you simply can't find anywhere else. Our server, Matthew, was outstanding. Friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely made the evening even more enjoyable. Service like his is a big part of what turns a great meal into an unforgettable one. Now, the food... The crab cake was one of the best I've ever had--easily 95% lump crab with barely any filler. Just fresh, sweet crab prepared perfectly. The beef carpaccio was elegant, incredibly flavorful, and disappeared far too quickly. Then came the French onion soup. There's a reason the National Onion Association recognized it as the best. Rich, deeply caramelized, perfectly balanced, and topped with a blanket of bubbling cheese. Without question, the best French onion soup I've ever had. The black truffle scallops were buttery, tender, and absolutely decadent. The evening's special--a blackened filet paired with shrimp linguine--was phenomenal. The filet was cooked to perfection, and the shrimp linguine brought bold Cajun flavors that made us feel like we had been transported straight to Louisiana. To finish it all off, watching enormous cargo ships leave the Port of Savannah bound for destinations around the world while enjoying an incredible meal is an experience all its own. Vic's on the River delivered on every level: exceptional food, first-class service, and an atmosphere that's impossible to duplicate. This wasn't just another dinner--it was one of the highlights of our trip to Savannah. Don't leave without ordering the French onion soup. And if you're lucky enough to have Matthew as your server, you're in for a memorable evening.

Vic's on the River was just an average experience for us. We had 5:30 reservations, and although…read morethe restaurant wasn't busy, it took a few minutes before anyone greeted us. We were seated in a corner near the bathrooms, and when I asked if we could have a table with a river view, I was told they had all been requested already. Nothing on the menu really stood out to me, so I ordered a wedge salad and a glass of wine. My husband had the French onion soup and a Caesar salad. The complimentary biscuits were definitely the highlight of the meal. They were warm, fresh, and absolutely delicious. The food itself was good, and the service was perfectly fine, but nothing about the experience felt memorable or special. Overall, it was just a middle-of-the-road dining experience. Personally, I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it or return.
