Passing through NC, we unexpectedly found ourselves in Mount Airy for the night, and I guess we just expected a little more from the home of Andy Griffith. And from a place with a name like 13 bones, I think we also expected more of a focus on really awesome NC BBQ. While we didn't really love our food, and the tables and walls were just a little more sticky than you'd hope for, the fried pickles were surprisingly good, and the staff was SUPER welcoming. If you're passing through town, I'd say pass on this spot. But if you're a local, you should push these guys a little! The pieces are there, but the execution needs help. read more

Do not understand why this restaurant is a 4 star. We thought it was a good sign that the parking lot was full and we waited an hour to be seated because we are from Ohio and have been looking forward to eating at 13 Bones for several months. Wow what a disappointment. Everything was overcooked beginning with the cold peel and eat shrimp. It was inedible along with the cocktail sauce that had way too much horseradish. The homemade chips were good but the "homemade onion dip" was ranch dressing and it was runny. The pork chop was very dry as well as the chicken that came with it. The bed of rice was overcooked and tasteless. My daughter was supposed to get hush puppies with that meal and never got them. My ribs were also over cooked and I could only eat half of the 1/4 rack I ordered. The best part of the meal was the broccoli. Our third plate was a New York strip steak which was good, nothing special but did have some flavor. This meal came with hush puppies which were unseasoned dough balls hence the reason we didn't ask for the ones not served with the other meal. I was glad I got Diet Coke to drink because the sweet iced tea was sweet water that a tea bag had passed over. Not your typical southern sweet tea. McDonald's has better sweet tea by far! We decided to skip dessert because we were expecting another disappointment and just couldn't take anymore. Our waitress took our order and brought our drinks and shrimp appetizer and then we only saw her twice more when she brought me another Diet Coke and to drop off the bill. We had a party of 4 and were looking for a good lunch spot before we went into downtown Mt Airy. We arrived a little after 12 and were seated immediately. The place is open and airy and was not too loud. The seating area was clean and our waitress was friendly. They have a draft beer selection as well as a bottled beer and wine selection. The beer prices were really reasonable, $5 per bottle which is good. I got the grilled tuna, mashed potatoes and green beans and they were so good. Would recommend the piece of bread vs the hushpuppies. My wife got the popcorn shrimp and it was a dinner for $10. It was a ton of food and great value. There are so many people here, they are waiting outside at pick-nick tables. Once in the service is fast, friendly and accurate. The food was great, my husband rack of ribs was falling off the bone with Kansas City sauce (not mustard); $19, the rack was 13 bones too...lol! Wonderful experience! Went on a Sunday drive with some friends and decided to stop at Mount Airy. Apparently 13 Bones is the place to go here! The interior is very nice and pays tribute to classic Americana. Especially the Andy Griffith show, which was filmed here in Mount Airy. The service was very friendly and I did not mind the wait time since the food was absolutely worth it! I ordered the fried pickles and friend mushrooms. First the good, the appetizer, Catfish Bites were very good. They were buttery with a good seasoning of salt and pepper. The main courses, the prime rib was cooked well and was well seasoned. However, I was not impressed with the raw "sauteed" vegetables. The trout was not well seasoned. The baked apples had so much butter with them you could see the sheen on them. We have eaten here a couple of times. At our latest visit, we picked up a to-go order. It was a little difficult to place an order since the line was very busy. The first time we called we were placed on hold. After a while had passed, we decided to hang up and call back. We tried to call back several times but the line was busy. Eventually our call went through and an employee took our order. I believe they take orders online, which may be easier than placing an order over the phone. Each employee we interacted with was friendly and our order was accurate and ready on time. Their drive through is very convenient. Our food was flavorful and portioned well. I ordered a steak salad. The vegetables were fresh and crisp. The steak had good flavor, however, it was tough and not cut up enough so it was difficult to eat as a salad. If you are bringing your food home then it is not a big issue. Their hushpuppies are crunchy and delicious and are included with several entrees. Went there this past weekend with only 6 people. It was a 20 min wait and that was fine. However we ordered our drinks and she came back with them and took our orders. After waiting an HOUR we went to look for our server to ask if they lost our order or if something was wrong. She said she would check on it... (well thanks that would be nice) She came back out to refresh our drinks and said they will be right out with it. And five minutes later it comes out. I swear I think they forgot about us. So after an hour and 10 minutes we got our Burgers. The food was ok but the service was horrible for 6 burgers orders. Just saying if I have company come in again from out of town. This is NOT the place I would take them. I still tipped the server even though I think we may have been in a better mood if she would have told us that she had checked on our order and gave us updated but the fact that we had to hunt her down to ask about our meals after waiting over an hour. read more

A terrific restaurant considering the moderate prices. I ordered grilled trout with a baked potato and broccoli. The trout was fresh and well spiced and cooked just right. Moist and tasty. For $13! My wife splurged on locally raised filet mignon ($33). She ordered it medium rare. It came out undercooked, so she sent it back for a few more minutes on the grill and it came back perfect. That showed the attentiveness of our waitress, who was stellar. All the sides were good except the hush puppies, which as other reviewers have noted were too small, dense and lukewarm. To top it all off, I got a local NC IPA in a bottle for $3.50. Next time I'll try the ribs or the fried oysters. Check this place out - it's great. One other minor criticism is that a little extra cleaning wouldn't hurt - particularly of the COVID plexiglas between the tables, which could probably be removed anyway at this point. read more

Decided to make a trip up to Mt Airy and wanted a good steak house. 13 bones did not disappoint. We didn't wait long even though they were very busy. The place was kept clean as there was always somone on the spot to get a table ready. The waitress was very kind and had a smile on her face the entire time. It maybe the best rated restaurant in Mt Airy but it is so far from great. I personally feel they are cutting corners and quality is suffering. Even the little things like the hush puppies are no longer good. It was dry and there was no visible corn meal in it. My wife had the teriyaki chicken and while the chicken was marinated in sauce, they put no sauce on the plate. And while rice is an inexpensive staple, they barely give you a table spoon of rice on the plate. I had the New Orleans Pasta with shrimp and again not enough sauce, I am pretty sure the shrimp are not local or gulf shrimp but maybe frozen from Southeast Asia. And with a name of New Orleans on the menu, you might expect a little spice in it. Well, nothing doing, I don't even think they cook the pasta in salted water. Tasteless. Another thing is the half price wine on Wednesday which almost all restaurants do in Mt Airy. Their deal is only the $5.00 a glass wine is included which is three undrinkable wines and they don't half price bottles which all other restaurants do. The place is always busy in spite of its shortcomings. The service is always exceptional. The best thing on the menu which they do not make is the Key Lime cheesecake. read more

The baked potato was nice for it's size & thoroughly baked! Fried Pickles were decent & the cinnamon apples hit the spot after all the seasoned food... However the sides & trout were not something to on the repeat list for ordering. The sautéed veggies were cooked until no flavor were left, the hush puppies were a bit tough & the trout was under seasoned. I'm giving it 3 stars only because the service was excellent. Waitress was very friendly and on top of things. Food was mediocre at best. My steak was overcooked and very bland, definitely needed some extra seasoning. Salads were watery and very plain, nothing special at all. My wife's chicken tenders were very good but her fries were cold. We got a piece of red velvet cake for dessert and it wasn't very good. Just didn't seem fresh at all. Very cool little place, a great atmosphere so it's definitely a shame the food wasn't better. Maybe we just caught it on a bad day but I couldn't recommend this place. read more
