It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. If you're visiting for the nostalgia, it's very cute and there's Barney Fife pictures hanging all over. First, they forgot half of our food and I had to remind the waitress about it. Then, my gravy biscuits were cold and when I mentioned it, the waitress took the plate, microwaved it, and brought it back to me. I wasn't expecting that. The biscuits were a little dry. I'm not sure much of it is homemade, as we saw the delivery of frozen food while we were there. The pancakes, plain and chocolate chip, were really good and my husband loved the bacon. My cheese grits were good and the sausage was pretty good. The prices were low. read more

Very cute little diner. Unfortunately we did not get a warm welcome. Maybe they don't like tourist here? Our waitress didnt smile at us once until we paid the bill and were leaving. She did greet her other table happily. We'd say please and thank you and she'd just walk away. No you're welcome or even acknowledging we spoke to her. We ordered 2 Omelets and a club sandwich. The food was very mid. The hashbrowns were a frozen product. I think there are probably better places to get breakfast. I dont know how this place has such a high rating. read more

Do not come here. This place is a below average diner, and the server didn't even want to work here. I really don't appreciate places that overcharge because of their location. Since it is in Mount Airy they hang Andy Griffith signs on the walls and use that as grounds to screw people. read more

We wanted to find a little diner while we were in "Mayberry" today. We decided on Barney's Cafe. It certainly did not disappoint. It's was very welcoming and exactly what we were looking for. Clean, pleasant and quaint little diner. We both had the Mayberry Gourmet burger and we split a large basket on onion rings. Our server was very pleasant and attentive. Our food was served quickly...hot and fresh. Very very good burgers and rings and a very reasonable price. The rings basket was more than enough for two of us. Mom and I attended the Autumn Leaves festival and decided to grab some lunch on our way out of the event. Neither one of us had ever been to this establishment before. It was a old timey diner that was filled with many patrons. Mom and I both decided on burgers but there are quite a few options to choose from. I got the pimento cheese burger and mom got the cheeseburger. We shared an order of onion rings, which were delicious. We both really enjoyed our burgers as well! They came out very fast! Our server was Lavonda and was pleasant and accommodating, despite being very busy. She made the experience even better. I gave 4 stars instead of five as I felt the prices were a bit high for the size of the burgers and side items. read more

My boyfriend and I were staying in town while visiting for a wedding and this restaurant was walkable to our VRBO. The inside is like a diner vibe and I loved it! We stopped by for breakfast one day while strolling the main street of Mayberry and I'm so glad that we did! I ordered a coffee and it was such good coffee to eat. I had a sausage biscuit and a side of grits with cheese on the grits. Both were super good and fresh. My boyfriend ordered pancakes and an omelette and he said that his meal was very good as well! Ok, the food was SO, SO BAD!! My friend got a grilled cheese sandwich. It's hard to mess up. The bread was soggy, it had mayo on it, then the cheese was like those fake cheese product that barely melts, and isn't even real cheese. I got the only thing that seemed decent which was a grilled chicken breast salad. It was also horrible... the chicken had a strange texture. There was no imagination or nutrition in the iceberg lettuce salad (again with strange cheap cheese shreds on it). The one thing it was, was cheap. Please do not stop in if you want actual edible food. Sorry. And perhaps the burgers (which we did not try) are the only decent things .. but given the quality of the chicken and the price, I venture to guess it's not top quality meat. read more

This cute diner gave me everything I was looking for today. It was that old style diner with counters and people that had been working there for decades. Turn back the time on the decor and the pricing!!! To be on Main Street in a place with tons of tourists, this place could charge way more than it did. I chose the special which was Barney burger and fries for $10.75. The burger was delicious and hand pressed for that fresh flavor. There was cheese and bacon on the burger and the bacon was among the best cooked bacon I've had. I'm a bacon snob and I cannot stand microwave mushy bacon most places serve. This bacon was extra crispy and oven baked. (We asked!) The fries were your typical fries and the onion rings were delicious. Lots of homemade cake. Today was a seat yourself day. They have 24 tables and a bar. The server came by and took our drink order quickly. Everyone is really nice. Most places seem to serve Pepsi. If you are a Coke person, you can get that in a bottle with no refills at several places. The burger was great, grilled onions, bacon, tomatoes, and lettuce with mayo. Catsup is on the table. The onion rings were crisp, hot, and not greasy. The deviled eggs had a good sprinkle of paprika on them. Everything was tasty. Kind of glad we didn't go last week. They had 40000 people in town for the Andy Griffith festival. Lines at restaurants would be long and sidewalks crowded. They don't close the streets for the festivals. Great food and atmosphere. Barney's on main is a diner that serves breakfast and lunch located on Main Street in historical mount airy North Carolina aka Mayberry. Paying homage to hometown hero Andy Griffith famous show sidekick deputy Barney Fife. The diner is small but does not lack in Mayberry decor or reference on the menu. Me and my buddy stopped in here for lunch on our little trip to Mayberry. I went with a basic bacon cheeseburger while He went with a Mayberry Club. The service here was adequate and our food came out pretty quickly. I will Say his portion size was better than mine. The food was just ok. Nothing special but not bad. Kinda what you expect for a small town tourist trap. They did offer some merch and souvenir cups but we both stuck with just the lunch meals. Underwhelming experience confused by the positive ratings I'm not quite sure how this restaurant has received such high reviews--perhaps we just ordered the wrong item. We stopped in for a quick lunch yesterday, and unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, and the quality was subpar. The chicken itself was tough and rubbery, and oddly, it was about 40% smaller than the bun it was served on, which made for an awkward and unsatisfying bite. For the side, I chose the fruit and cottage cheese, only to be served a few spoonfuls of what appeared to be diced canned peaches--not what I expected for a place with so many positive ratings. Based on this experience, I wouldn't return. It's possible other menu items are better, but for the price and quality, I expected more. read more

I think this place is more known for the nostalgia and the decor than for the food because it's definitely themed after the Andy Griffith show which the whole town is. Also. That being said, I had to get the Barney burger and thought it was a very good burger. The waitress was super nice and greeted me immediately upon entering and the food was very affordable, and very tasty. Had a great day visiting Mt Airy aka Mayberry! We chose to stop at Barney's Cafe for a quick bite. The location is great - right on the main street. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a table but it was a beautiful day and there were benches outside. Once seated our server quickly took our order and the food was out in about 10 minutes. They were very busy! Burgers and fries were delicious! The only "negative" is that is was a bit smoky from the grill but not overpowering. I'd definitely go again! Staff was fantastic! read more

First time here and it wasn't good. We both had burgers and neither were good. We had cake hoping for redemption and cake was not good either, very dry and seemed like it'd been sitting there for a while. I get the feeling there are a lot of reviews written based on the customer's pre-expectations or wanting the cheapest of the cheap. Barney's is great... And gets 5 stars for being exactly as it should. It has the feel of the show along with very tasty food at more than reasonable prices. It almost felt like Juanita was waiting on me at the bar with all the southern charm one would expect. The rest of the staff was hustling to make good service too. I was totally in the mood for a cheeseburger but also had to have a classic fried baloney sandwich... Both were perfect! The bar was just right for me but there were lots of tables available. This is a quaint little cafe in downtown Mount Airy. There's counter seating inside along with tables. The menu is simple and basic cafe style. Our waitress was very nice and we had good service. My husband ordered the Barney burger and I had the Mayberry Club sandwich. I noticed how nice and crispy the bacon was and the tomato was good considering this is February and they are out of season. I have had better, more attentive service in a truck stop diner. Food - Decent. I ordered a Barney Burger. There was nothing special about, but it tasted OK. It came with potato chips, which was a joke since they looked like someone grabbed small a handful and squeezed them before setting them on the plate. Value - Marginal. The burger was cheap, but the overall experience was disappointing given the expectations that come with a tourist type restaurant. Could not believe how busy this place was for a Wednesday around 2pm during off season period. We sat at the counter to be seated immediately. I don't understand how this place is a 4.5 rating online. The service is really good. They make sure you're seated as soon as possible. The burger my dad ordered was pretty good but okay at the same time. More like a 6/10 burger idk. But the fries were SAD. No seasoning?? Ridiculous!! At least ketchup made it better But after eating this, WE GOT FOOD POISONING. I'm sure everyone who works there are very nice people but WHAT THE HECK GUYS!
