This place is country diner to a T! Have been coming here since I was a kid and got to visit recently while on a hunting trip. Though I only got ice cream, the place was packed so you just know the food is good. Plus, it's stood the test of time. It's not right in Mt. Airy but on the outskirts and has been open for years so you know the food quality is there. The dipped ice cream was amazing. For one, the food here is horrible. I have thrown up eating here before it's that horrible. For two, the service was very rude. I went during lunch time, and sadly got that horrible woman to take my order. I think they called her Kim. Not only was she beyond rude, but when I went to sit down and eat my food I overheard her making fun of my shirt. Mind you all it said was Black Lives Matter. I got the feeling that I was not welcomed based on the color of my skin. If you're a person of color, do not step a foot inside that building; the moment you do I guarantee, you will feel and get the exact same if not worse treatment as I did. Decided to check out this small burger spot while in the Mt Airy area. Customers were coming in and out the door the whole time I was there so it's definitely a popular place for the locals! I ordered the first thing that's listed on their menu and it's the Superchef burger! It's nothing special, but it gets the job done! The chicken sandwich isn't as flavorful as I was hoping. Tastes like frozen chicken patties, but it's still a decent sandwich! The fries were super crispy, just wished I had some seasoning salt to add on them. The sweet tea was perfect! The outside and, frankly the inside as well of this place leaves much to be desired. I'm sure they have their reasons for not wanting to update their restaurant. I really don't come to places like this for the decor. A spur of the moment drive to Mount Airy brought me here. I was hungry so as usual, I turn to Yelp to help. This place, got some decent reviews from fellow Yelpers so I trusted their judgement. My husband and I shared a variety of menu items. The Ground Steak sandwich, the Super Chef Burger, a hot dog, fries, and Hot Fudge Cake. I'll just rank them in order of most to least tasty: 1. Hot Fudge Cake- worth every calorie and I'd stop for that again for sure. Tons of hot fudge poured over moist chocolate cake and vanilla soft serve. Yum! 2. Hot dog- although I'm not a fan of the pink hot dogs, flavor wise theirs was pretty good. We ordered it all-the-way but chili was hard to find. 3. Super Chef Burger- basic burger. It could use a bit more seasoning and condiments. 4. Ground Steak Sandwich- I was looking forward to this the most. I was quite disappointed. It lacked flavor and there was no texture. Basically mushy steamed ground beef on a bun with slaw and mayo. We added ketchup and that made a huge improvement. I'd still pass on it if I came here again. I don't know what I was expecting but if they seasoned the beef more, this unique sandwich could be a great signature item on their menu. The fries were ok. They were hot but served completely unseasoned which means by the time I get them, it's too late and no salt will stick. People, just give them a sprinkle of salt right out of the fryer please! The service here is fast and friendly. I gave them an extra star just because of that alone. We had never been here and the cashier was kind and patient with us. I just wanted to say that I've went by this place many of times without stopping and I don't know why considering I grew up around a place like this back in Man, W.V. ( Man, Dairy Bar) and loved it. well, I finally stopped in a few weeks back and bought a dipped cone and now I get one everytime I go to Mount Airy. Today I went and bought a double cheese burger, fries and drink and it was very good. out of 5 stars, I give it a 10. people has always been nice and super fast. the burger was awesome and the little place brings back good memories as do the food of Dairy Bar when I was little. I'll tell you this, This place will be my go to place from now on when I want good fast food or ice cream....forget Mcdonalds, Burger King or any other place. Speedy Chef is awesome, just superb! This was our final stop as we headed out of town on Business 52, and this was the best experience of all, except that my phone camera messed up, and I ended up with no clear pictures. We stayed the course - Double Cheeseburger, Hot Dog all-the-way, and a Ground Beef Sandwich with sliced tomato and some extra slaw. Also threw in some FFs here. The hot dog was good, not great, the Double Cheeseburger was excellent, and the Ground Beef Sandwich was even better - should have gotten 2 like my Yelp fiend, Sam J. The FFs were not ones I'd order again, and probably not the hot dog, but the Cheeseburger and that awesome Ground Beef, I'd order in a heart beat. We stopped by Speedy Chef for lunch while passin' through town. It was awesome, it reminds me of a place that was near my home when I was a kid and was a childhood favorite of mine, but doesn't exist anymore. I almost felt like I was sittin back in the early 80's here at Speedy Chef. You can just tell it's one of those local favorites that's been around forever...especially by the crowd that was rollin' in during the lunch rush while we were there. My lunch was awesome, that SuperChef Burger is a biggun, 2 patties with cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles and mayo, definitely needed a few napkins for this one, so good. While I was standing in line to order I saw someone pick up their order at the counter with hot dogs on it and they looked so good I got one too. My hot dog was great, mustard, slaw, chili and onions, and they use the reddish hot dogs...my favorite. Our crinkle cut fries were fried perfect, but they had no salt whatsoever on them, but a little salt in the ketchup remedied that...that's the only negative about the whole deal, the salt-free fries. Aside from the burgers, hot dogs and other sandwiches they have a variety of ice cream options on the menu. Milkshakes, sundaes and cones a plenty. That hot fudge cake sundae is great AND it's really big enough for 2 people. A community treasure! I know families (my husband's being one of them) that have 2 generations get their highschool jobs here. With chain fast food resteraunt popping up everywhere it was great to visit an original. While we were there for dinner the place was full of locals. I have been coming to the Speedy Chef since I was a small kid. Usually on the weekends during a trip to Grandma's. This place brings back so many memories for me. I think the only thing that has changed are the swivel chairs. Now they have stationary chairs. (Anyone who has been coming here since the 80's will remember these) Anyway.....On to the food. Most everything here is served quick, hot and super fresh but I usually get the same thing. The Groundsteak Sandwich with FF. They toast the buns without butter and they are always so soft and warm. First, let me just say, the catfish was the best I have ever had. My son has never had catfish and he tried it and loved it. That's what happens when food is done right. The hush puppies, while not the typical ball shape (they were cylindrical in shape) were very good and moist inside. My son had the chicken sandwich and the chicken piece was huge and fried nicely with the chicken staying juicy. I saw burgers and hot dogs with chili being served that looked equally as scrumptious. One of the reasons they received a 4 star and not a 5 star is our food seemed to take longer than what should be expected. I saw others being served well before we received our food. I think the owner must have overheard me because he did check on us once we received the food. His hospitality was bar none stellar and very much appreciated. He even offered a slice of their homemade pie. The other reason for the 4 star rating is it is a cash only joint. Yes, they have an ATM but there is the $2.50 charge for the service and then some banks charge another fee on top of that. For a place this popular and clearly well reviewed by many, allowing for charged purchases would be a wash with any fees paid for the service. Plus, it is a convenience to the customer that in this day and age can no longer be overlooked. Just my opinion... Overall though, this was an incredible find on our way back home. read more
