Stopped in for lunch after exploring the shops on Main Street in Mt. Airy/Mayberry, NC. Like most all of Main Street this little burger joint emotes an old lunch counter. Bar stools and booths. Lots of smiling faces and kind gestures. The hamburger was good. Done all the way through and the bun was fresh, tho toasted, still managed to be equal amounts toast and soft. Mmmm. The fries were done equally as well. Could not have asked for a more pleasant break in our day! read more

Great, old fashioned, southern breakfast this morning at this fun old diner. In remembrance of my mom, I had country ham with eggs, grits and a flaky biscuit. All of it wonderful - and the portions large. My husband had a special that included eggs, sausage, and monster pancake. He said it was really tasty. Busy little local place. Had to wait just a bit which was fine. Casual local memorabilia. Shared a cheeseburger and fries as we wanted to have pie. Burger and fries were good, didn't appear to be frozen. Had the chocolate pie. I didn't know it was a cream pie and not homemade. I came in to Leon's to have lunch with a friend. This was the first time I had even heard of Leon's, but I can see why it's popular. The interior and staff are retro. Not a ton of table space (maybe 5 booths) but I do like the classic low bar seating. I came in right at 12 on a Tuesday, so not the most busy time, but there were no tables open or two seats side by side at the bar. The owner took my name and put me in line. We ended up getting a seat at the bar once my friend arrived. It seemed like the turn over time was reasonable. The lunch menu is pretty classic and small, which I think is a good idea. Smashburgers with basics, plus a few other things. I ordered a basic cheeseburger and onion rings. It was cooked quickly and correctly. Tasted like I would expect. I took my mom here during Autumnleaves festival in Mount airy North Carolina. We had to wait to get in, but it was so worth it. The food was delicious. We watched as they made the food right there because we were able to sit at the counter. We loved all the people that worked there they were so friendly And it was so cute being able to eat in that little diner. It was small not a lot of booths and not a lot of bar space but they knew how to take care of you. We are looking forward to going back another time. During my month on clinical rotations in Mount Airy, I wanted to see what small businesses they offered in the area. Leon's was an amazing find! It's a cash-only business and I recommend ordering ahead by calling them if you're in a hurry or just picking up the food and not dining in. Their Doc's Burger Royale is the best burger I've ever had! I wanted my fiancé to try it, so we drove an hour to Mount Airy, but they were closed during Black Friday. Not a problem, however, we'll just visit another day. The burger is so worth the drive. read more

Located in bustling (if touristy) downtown Mount Airy, Leon's Burger Express serves a very good burger. Cooked fresh and prepped with care, the burger had a very good flavor. The fries were fine and the sweet tea was excellent. A friendly staff and cute interior decor complement the good food to make this a solid 4 star joint. My only nitpick is the word "express"--it should be dropped from the name, for it took quite a while to get my food. I'm actually fine with this, for the cook paid individual attention to each burger, and I appreciated that. So great taste? Yep. But express? Nope. read more

This is the only place I have ever eaten in Mount Airy, but if I return I won't eat anywhere else. I brought a group of 20 to this small diner and they handled us efficiently and fed us well. They don't take debit or credit cards and it's not posted but they have an ATM and that is posted, as I was rudely informed by my server. Ordered 2 burgers 1 regular and 1 with no bun due to wife's allergy. They served both with bun then when informed they began removing the bun to re-serve it to us. When I refused and explained, they left my food for a while and put another burger on. Finally the server saw I wasn't eating without my wife eating so she put mine under the light. A staple of Mt Airy.. Yeah there is Andy Griffith and everything but then there's Leon's. Leon's is always there for you. You didn't just happen to be here in Mt Airy because you made a wrong turn. So do yourself a favor and stop by Leon's instead of going to a chain restaurant. Their menu is simple. They have breakfast and lunch and don't worry about asking because everything on the menu is good. If you ask the wait staff what is good they will reply "I like it all." Obviously well known for their hamburgers so you probably should order one.. or two. Don't miss their breakfast though. It's exactly what you need when starting your early morning in the town of Mt Airy. Really no negatives to Leon's. We had a relative in town who wanted to see "Mayberry" so we took a little day trip. We stopped here for a quick bite before we left. This was a typical diner experience - I ordered the grilled cheese and everyone else got burgers. Everything was fresh and tasty! This is the burger you grew up eating. No pretense, just plain tasty. The service is personable and friendly. Depending on your age, this place takes you back. Bring cash but you can go far on $10 and leave with change. My favorite is the California burger. I have heard they have the best pancakes anyway but I've never been in for breakfast. My family and I are visiting from FL but there were over 20 of us and this is a pretty small diner but we let them know ahead of time and they were so quick to accommodate our needs. We were walking the town and literally smelled the burgers before we even got there. The owner (husband & wife) were so friendly and they brought out our food so fast! We were definitely well taken care of. We had lunch and had no complaints at all the food was amazing. Really good burgers and fries. They also do breakfast and the owner even invited us back tomorrow morning for some homemade breakfast. This place was one of the best mom&pop shops around for sure. The food is AWESOME!! The owners/staff are great and genuinely care about the town and the people in it. I've been eating here for many years. If you love burgers this is the place to go...they are fresh and the taste will absolutely change your life in a good way :) It's by far one of my favorite places to eat in town!!! Just remember to bring CASH..not sure why Yelp thinks they take credit/debit because they don't. If you're in the area and looking for a fun place to go, I highly recommend going to Leon's!
