We generally have a good dining experience here. Today was both surprising and disappointing. I ordered the chicken fried steak with coleslaw, sweet potato and hush puppies. My husband ordered the burger. When the waitress brought our lunch I thought, "wow, that doesn't look very appetizing ". But we all know looks can be deceiving. I cut into the meat and could tell immediately that it was very grisly. I took the first bite and honestly, it was so grisly it wasn't edible. I never spit out food in a restaurant but good grief, the only other option was to choke to death. When waitress came to check on us and as politely as possible told her the restaurant shouldn't be serving this. The reason I gave 2 stars instead of minus 10 is that the waitress was so gracious and brought me the pot roast as a replacement. She also told me that she cringes when someone orders it as she knows how unacceptable it is. Although she corrected the problem and to her credit is trying to be faithful to her employer, the waitstaff should just say, "honestly, I believe you may be happier with a different choice ". I was just about to say this is the worst meal I've ever had in any restaurant anywhere but then I remembered the parilla we had in Montevideo, Uraguay, but then I just can't bring myself to eat a sheep's scrotum. When we paid our bill we also communicated to the lady at the register that this item needs to be removed from the menu. I was shocked that this restaurant would continue to offer this so just take my advice choose from the many great items they offer. Honestly, as much as we have enjoyed dining here in the past, I'm sure it will be a while before we return. read more

I ordered takeout for lunch. I'm gonna start out by saying that the place is absolutely packed on a weekday elbow to elbow. I had to work my way through a crowd. It was unclear where I go for a takeout pickup. I stood at the bar while several employees passed me and said nothing, including one assigned to the bar. I finally went over to a nice young guy and asked if he could get my order. As far as my lunch I ordered a salmon salad. The salmon tasted ok but nothing special. Been here twice and both times were excellent. First time I ordered fish with slaw and baked beans. Came out quick and hot. Great flavor on everything and great service. Second time I stopped there with my granddaughter. She ordered chicken fingers and I went with the steak this time. Again food came quickly and had great flavor. Recognized by most as Mt. Airy's best and most reliable restaurant, 13 Bones has never disappointed this finicky foodie from Charlotte. On this trip for lunch, my wife and I split the full rack of Kansas City style ribs and added a couple of salads along with loaded baked potatoes. The ribs were incredibly tender and yes, the meat literally fell off of them. They were some of the best ribs I've ever had anywhere (even Kansas City!) The fact that they were only $19 including two sides was actually a deal when you consider it fed both of us pretty easily. The baked potatoes were, well, baked potatoes but the stuff including fresh bacon made them special. The side salads were fresh and pretty tasty. The bread however (both the hush puppies and the yeast rolls) were a little cold and not special. I know someone will want to string me up for that saying that. Service was exceptional and the place was immaculate from the dining area to the bathrooms. This place easy warrants four stars for restaurants in its category and is definitely a Gotta Try in Mt Airy. read more

I was in the area, and received the suggestion to try 13 Bones for lunch. I was seated immediately on a Friday around 3pm, and my server Carly came almost immediately to take my drink order and provide suggestions on what to eat since it was my first time here. There's a lot to choose from, but since I was told their ribs were almost famous, I ordered them, Kansas City style. The ribs came with 2 sides, I had baked beans and French fries. The ribs and the beans were absolutely delicious, the ribs fell off the bone. The flavor was perfect and the the 1/2 rack portion was perfect for me. I was literally licking my fingers they were so good. The fries were just fries, but hit the starch spot. I enjoyed my meal and would come back if I was ever in the area. read more

This is a lively place. Busy and staff buzzing around. We were seated immediately and greeted by our waitress quickly. Very friendly staff. I ordered a half rack dry rub ribs with, green beans and coleslaw. My wife ordered catfish with mixed vegies and a ceaser salad. Ribs were fall off bone and plenty of meat. The green beans are canned with an attempt to spice them up but still tasted like canned beans. All service was good. read more

We found this place while driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, about 19 miles off Fancy Gap exit. It advertised as Ribs-steak-seafood. We had baby back ribs and pork chops both came with two sides. They have two different bbq sauces and a dry rub you can choose for your ribs. But trust me this isn't a bbq restaurant, ribs didn't have any Smoky taste and very dry. The pork chops were good and so were the sides, you can choose two sides from a large selection. Now the staff was very friendly, we were seated right away and our waitress came immediately to give us menu's and take our drink order. She was very helpful with menu options and service was great. I would give the staff five star's but the food only three. We will be back to give the food a second chance. read more

My husband and I came here on a busy Wednesday night. Put our name in for a table with a 20 minute wait. No problem. We went to the bar with one chair and my husband said sit down and as soon as we said that another man said please sit down we are leaving! So it was awesome, no waiting and we just sat at the bar and had drinks (half price wine on Wednesday) and dinner. I had blackened salmon and my husband had steak and shrimp and said it was great. All around a great place...from the patriotic ambience to the friendly and efficient service to the extensive and eclectic menu, this place should have something to please anyone. Six of us decided to eat at 13 Bones after reading the reviews on Apr 20, 2023. We had just driven 5 hours and were looking for a decent meal. What a mistake. The ribs were dry and the two steaks were over cooked and tough. The mac and cheese was obviously from a can with no taste. The server was slow to get refills and did not check on unless we waived him down. All of these great reviews obviously came from staff and family. We will never go back or recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

Great place to eat!!! We are staying in town, and our hotel pointed us here for dinner, and we enjoyed our entire experience. We tried the homemade chips & French Onion dip & fried pickles and both were delicious! My husband LOVED the mushroom melt, and I got a blackened salmon Caesar salad with an add on of tobacco onions, their homemade fried onions (which were awesome and not greasy at all). The only issue is that everything was so good, we ate way too much. Perhaps the best part was our impeccable server, Megan. My husband drinks a ton of water and fast, and she never once let his glass get empty. She recommended the peanut butter cheesecake or the strawberry cream cake for dessert, which we got to go- couldn't resist cause they are all homemade and everything else was so good. Plus, Megan has the most gorgeous pumpkin/Halloween tattoo, so we got a great recommendation for a local tattoo artist too! Thank you, Megan, for a truly enjoyable experience. We were traveling from NE Ohio to Ocean Isle NC, and spent the night in Mt Airy NC on way. Looked on Yelp and looked for good place nearby to eat. Called them to verify they were open due to all the virus crap. They said yep, but tables of 6. So we went and took up 3 tables. The food was great. The waitress we had was fantastic. I had the best buffalo chicken sandwich I've ever had. Everything everyone in our group had was fantastic, except both people who got burgers felt they were very overcooked. We had considered taking an order to go since they closed in about 30 minutes but the staff was so welcoming we decided to sit. While we were reviewing the menu a waitress asked us if we minded if she put the chairs up on the tables o7n the next aisle. I thought that was VERY considerate. I ordered a grilled pork chop with the jack Daniel's sauce k and my friend ordered a steak which was cooked perfectly and had plenty! I will surely be back to this place on my next visit!! read more

Visited Mayberry for the weekend and this place was suggested by some locals. We had to wait 40min for a table- so people know about the place! Our server was great and made good suggestions. The food selection was excellent and we had some of the best fried mushrooms ever. The ribs were good and the fried oysters and cole slaw were amazing. We will definitely be going back! read more
