I ordered the chicken and steak combination entrée. The chicken was fine, but the steak was a completely different story. The steak was extremely fatty, stringy, and chewy. Looking at it, I suspect it may have been a lower-quality cut such as skirt steak, flap meat, chuck steak, or something similar, but I honestly do not know for certain. What I do know is that it did not resemble the quality, texture, or appearance that most people expect when ordering steak. I've included a photo so others can judge for themselves. This wasn't a one-time mistake. I had a similar experience before but decided to give it another chance. Unfortunately, the second experience was no better than the first. My impression is that customers are being charged for what they expect to be a lean steak, but are being served a much cheaper and lower-quality cut. Whether that's actually the case, I can't say for certain, but that's exactly how it felt based on what was served to me. As a result, I won't be returning. If you're considering the chicken and steak combination entrée, I'd recommend choosing something else. read more

Shikora Express - A piece of disappointing steak! - Japanese Near Me - Mount Airy, North Carolina

Always great food and fast service. Great price for hibachi. We always get a few different dishes such as chicken for the kids and steak or shrimp for the adults. I love to add extra veggies to mine also. read more

How can you call this Japanese food? I'm so sorry. Mall food is more authentic(I use this word loosely),affordable and tastes better. When I was younger maybe around 10 I tried to make stir fry and I thought that all I needed was soy sauce to season the meat...that's exactly what this is...chicken with no aromatics and just tossed in soy sauce. Everyone here, you deserve better. read more

I have not eaten here in a long time and was very happy to swing by. I ordered the hibachi chicken with mixed veggies and got white sauce to go with it. I noticed the chicken was very dry and there were large pieces of onion that did not look cooked. I decided to give it a try anyways. I regret it as it tasted terrible and did not have any flavor. The rice was flavorless and so did the sauce. This was a first. I would look into doing better because this will drive people away. read more

The Mahi Mahi was excellent... The steak was tender. I didn't know what to expect but for the price it was worth every bite. I will definitely go back. read more

Shikora Express - a plate of meat, rice and carrots - Japanese Near Me - Mount Airy, North Carolina

Just called tonight around 7pm to order supper because we got out of work late tonight. Took us about 30 minutes to get them to answer. The girl answered the phone and said we are closed and hung the phone up. But the online listing showed them to be open and my spouse drove there to get it and was in the parking lot. We will never again eat there. Food wasn't the best anymore anyways. read more

Just mediocre Japanese. Nothing really good but nothing super bad about it. I think that Saki Sushi nearby is better.

Shikora is located in a strip mall with Staples, Burke's, Dollar General and Tractor Supply Store being the major anchors. I've been here twice with tonight being the second try and it's meh and overpriced considering the size of the steak, shrimp and chicken. The entrees need more flavor. The ginger sauce and white sauce are the best. The teriyaki sauce is sweet and does not taste like teriyaki. I have not tried the red sauce but learned after I ordered it's spicy. Wish I known because I do love spicy. I had the filet and shrimp. Both were really tiny pieces. You get a lot of rice and small side of sweet carrots. My Dad had the scallops which looked like sea scallops, not the the smaller bay scallops. He said they were good. My Mom had the shrimp and she commented later she wish she had ordered the side of zucchini. That's right unlike most hibachi places that serve a side of zucchini, onion and mushrooms, these are an additional charge. They were extremely busy tonight with takeout and Door Dash. There was only one other family who dined in at 6:30 while we visited. They serve tea and sodas. You serve yourself from the tea dispenser or the fountain drink machine. If you're planning to come this week, please note they are closed July 4-11, 2021 for family vacation. read more

Awesome service and amazing food. Customer service is always at its best. Definitely would recommend this place to anyone. And to top it off it quick and won't break the bank! read more

I thoroughly enjoy eating hibachi chicken and vegetables whenever it's available. I had a co-worker enlighten me on the presence of this little jewel! It seems to have a steady flow of customers, but not so many that the crowd is over-bearing. On my last visit, I ordered the steak and chicken hibachi with mixed vegetables (broccoli, mushrooms, onions, zucchini). I'm not a fan of the mushrooms, so I generally omit them. I prefer that my veggies are cooked when ordered. If you just order the veggies (no special order), I believe some are already pre-cooked and they don't seem as fresh. (This only happened once) It comes with sweet carrots and rice and I must say, it was enough for two separate meals. All white sauce is not created equal, but in this case..it was quite Devine! read more

Delicious food, super quick and plenty of it. We will be making this a regular place to eat in town.

I have been going here forever and I love it. They have a lot to choose from along with big portions. The food is so good!

I got the Mahi with mixed vegetables. Mahi was well cooked, fresh, and tasted very good. The vegetables and rice are flavored just a little different than I am used to, but they were still very good. We will probably stop here again the next time we are in town. read more

I asked for completely plain, no seasoning/salt/veggie/pepper/ ANYTHING P L A I N chicken and rice and what do I get....oily chicken and rice with some kind of greasy sauce and there are peas and corn in the rice!!!!! I can't eat any of it. If you can't do what is asked tell me so I don't waste my time. Incredibly upset, dissatisfied and ticked off because now I've wasted my time, food, and money. Good job Shikora...and when I called about it the lady told me I was wrong and that I basically didn't know what I was talking about. Plain means plain. You have one job. read more

The food was excellent and the wait time was super quick. Highly recommend anyone who likes Japanese to give it a shot.

Food is fresh and portions make it an excellent value. Almost always, one plate is two meals worth of food. This is definitely the best hibachi-style restaurant in MA. Never loaded down with oil like Saki and the restaurant is much cleaner than Kyoto. Sometimes the chicken is a bit overcooked but I would rather have that than undercooked. The only drawback is the staff, particularly the teenagers who work the register and take phone orders. They definitely need extensive customer service training. I make this comment after multiple negative experiences here over the years with the most recent happening this weekend. I called ahead and was immediately asked to hold, which was fine because I know they're a busy spot and there were likely customers in line at the register. I was placed on hold for 4 minutes 55 seconds when I finally hung up. The first minute or so I could hear the cashier with customers but after that, nothing but kitchen noise. Pretty sure she forgot me. I called back in a few minutes and placed my order. I was told the order would be ready in 10 minutes. No problem. I arrived at the restaurant 15 minutes later, paid for my food, and the cashier hastily checked the ready orders on the counter and said that mine wasn't quite ready. Again, no problem. I don't mind waiting on fresh food. I sat down and waited for another 20 minutes. After several people who came in after me ordered their food, received it and left, I inquired about my food. The cashier looked at the ready orders and asked what I had ordered. Then she picked up a bag that had been sitting on the counter the whole time, since I originally came in to the restaurant and paid. So I just looked at her...she looked at me unapologetically and offered a snide, "Sorry." Shikora: Please get these teenagers some training in customer service and people skills. They take away from what you're offering. They lack phone skills as well as in-person communication skills. Often, they are engaged in conversations with one another that customers shouldn't hear. They keep drinks and even milkshakes by the register and have no qualms about sipping them right there in the open. Also, if customers come in 30-45 minutes prior to closing time, it's not appropriate for staff to give them dirty looks because they don't want to deal with anyone else at closing time. read more

We went to get food from restaurant last night arrived at restaurant 10 minutes before 800pm which states they are open until 800 pm. They had cleaned grilles and were not willing to fix any order. I think management needs to check out employees that are responsible for serving customers until at least to the time it's says its closing. Will not be visiting this restaurant in the near future, due to denied services. read more

Until now this resturant had been one of my favorite places to eat in mt airy me and my family have been coming for years, until today they accidentally added extra vegtables to a plate of mine and rather than just giving me the extras because of their mishap, they preceded to hold my plate from me trying to make me pay after I had already paid for the plain plate. After refusing to let me have my food, the manager preceded to literally picked out the extra vegetables with her hand and then handed me my food expecting me to eat this. They then also refuse a new plate or refund very unsatisfactory as well as unsanitary. read more

This location has rude employees who just take the phone off the hook when they get busy. After calling 43 times I finally drove to the location to ask why the phone was not on the hook and was told they were busy and decided to take it off the hook. One employee came over and said she had broken her wrist and said she wasn't much help. My question was , why was she at work? There were no tickets hanging up for orders and there were no customers in the restaurant. If I could give zero stars, I would. read more

This place has a good choice in hibachi fish plates and other meats. Mahi mahi , salmon , scallops and more. My meal was gluten free. I got the scallops which were cooked perfectly. There was good flavor to the food, but something gritty in the rice like sand. I ate most of my food focusing on everything, except the rice where the grittiness was. I will definitely come here again and get something different. If I notice the sand like grittiness of the food I will let the manager know. I hope it was a one time incident. read more

The absolute best place in Mount Airy for Japanese. I could eat there every day. The only complaint I have is that sometimes the meat is overcooked and dry but most of the time it's just right. I always get the hibachi filet and chicken combo and it's so tasty and flavorful that adding a sauce to it is a waste. read more
