Very nice staff, very very good ribs. I had the Kansas barbecue ribs and my wife had the dry rub ribs, both were mouth watering, lip smacking, finger licking awesome. My daughter had the salt and pepper catfish which I didn't taste myself but my daughter said was great. This was my first visit (I was passing through from SC. headed to Va.) but it won't be my last. 13 Bones catered my daughter's wedding this weekend. They came highly recommended by the venue we used and we were not disappointed! We selected to have the taco bar, it was delicious! Our guests really enjoyed the taco selection and the fruit/vegetable trays. The staff was excellent! Fried pickles are a wonderful surprise. I couldn't stop eating them. This restaurant was packed on the Saturday night we visited it. We were given a wait time of 30 minutes but were seated in 15. I had a half rack of the baby back ribs with their original rib sauce, which is a thin vinegar based BBQ sauce. The ribs were flavorful but I wish I had asked for extra BBQ sauce for dipping. My daughter enjoyed the Teriyaki chicken. The staff was nice and the decor was pleasant. Lighting could have been dimmed a little, but overall a good place to eat and relax. If I ever get back to Mt. Airy, NC (home of Andy Griffith), I will definitely dine here again. read more

My friend and I had dinner here the other night, it being my first time. She told me Sagebrush was better (and I'd have to agree), but since I had never been, we chose to eat here instead. Our server was very friendly. There was another server with blonde hair who seemed to have an attitude problem, not sure why. Everytime she walked by, she'd give us her "bitch face". We went around 4pm so it wasn't crowded, but as we were leaving is when the people started to pour in. I had the 8 oz sirloin, medium well, with a baked potato, side Caesar salad, and a roll. She had the same except with mac n cheese and mashed potatoes. My steak was okay. Not the best sirloin I've ever had but certainly not the worst. The salad was a little rubbery tasting which is odd. I don't think I've ever had salad that had a texture quite like this one did. Baked potato was typical. You could tell the mac n cheese is not homemade. It looks like kraft mac n cheese deluxe. It was a nice dinner and I might be back with my husband next time. Probably will get something other than a steak, honestly. We have intended to eat here since moving here to mount airy, we were under the impression that it was somewhat high ended and that the food would be good! How wrong we were. when We walked in, the atmosphere was more of a Denny's then a first class steak restaurant. We were greeted nicely and immediately seated, and our order was taken. We both ordered an 8oz sirloin, his med. rare and mine medium. Baked potato and a house salad. We both ordered a beer. The drinks arrived promptly, mine was cold and good (it was poured from a can), my husbands was a draft, not cold and flat. Next we received our salads, not cold or crisp, more room temperature. Then our main dish came out, my medium steak was ok, a little tough but I could eat it. My husband cut into his with some effort and took the first bite...... he couldn't eat it, it was so tough he saved it for the dogs. I also got a roll with my dinner, which was to hard to eat, and he got hush puppies..... I took one bite of the hush puppies and spit it out. Took those home for the dogs also. Now our dogs love a good doggie bag, they didn't turn their noses at the steak leftovers but would not eat the hush puppies..... go again? I don't think so. Now this place does BBQ correctly! It may not be a true pit BBQ, but they balance the use of real smoke and liquid nicely. The options are a complete "Barbecue Trail" with of course suggestions of the Carolinas, Memphis, Kansas City style and of course Texas. There were some selections which even could be considered the newest BBQ style on the trail, Georgia! I recommend the base sampler, ribs, chicken and brisket. Sure there will be leftovers as I can tell From experience that it is impossible to take it all in at one time. (Which suits me as this is a great stop between Myrtle Beach and Ohio.) Food is okay, mostly heat and serve stuff for a higher price tag than it needs to be. Service is subpar most days, started to ask the waitress a question once and she just walked away and didn't come back for 5 minutes. Parking is horrendous, if it's busy you'll get mad trying to park. Only reason I give two stars is because you can typically get a good cut of meat when you order a steak, but there's no telling if it'll be cooked the way you order. read more

My Airy has a wonderfully delicious restaurant for bbq, chicken, pork, pasta, salads, and desserts named 13 Bones. Summer was our server. She was congenial, fast, and kind. We really like her!!! Two of us had lasagna with salad and two of us had sliced bbq. We wrapped up lunch with two desserts. We had 3 layer chocolate cake and a key lime cheesecake. Both pieces were delicious and huge! 13 bones was good when it 1st open in Mt. Airy but every time I eat there the food gets worse and the service get worse. I got a pork chop and I ask no gravy and potatoes and when it came out it had gravy on it, so I had it sent back and everybody at my table was finish eating when I got my food I ask the waitress and manager was they going to discount my food and they both laughed , I tried to eat what they brought me and after I finished I wish I hadn't eaten it, it was burn and tasted terrible , I couldn't tell it was a pork chop or tenderloin or what kind of meat it was. On our journey north we have had BBQ several times. The restaurant named 13 Bones had the best BBQ of the trip and an oddity of fried pickles. The name of the restaurant comes from the fact that a full rack of ribs must have 13 bones to be a full rack. An indication of how good the meal would be started in a packed parking lot. We sat at the bar and the kitchen was in full view. Five men hustled constantly to fill the orders, many going into take out containers. The ribs were fall off the bone well done. My husband and I arrived in Mount Airy on the tail end of our 7 day trip to visit several NC state parks. Amid the Covid 19 pandemic, we were happy to see NC restaurants complying with our states facemask mandates and precautions to protect both customers and employees. Every restaurant we visited, until 13 Bones, that is... They had a sign outside informing or reminding incoming customers of social distancing, handwashing, etc and that was where their concern and compliance stopped! None of the wait staff, hostesses, and most of the cooks in the kitchen were wearing any masks whatsoever! Of the four or five cooks in the kitchen preparing food, only three were wearing masks. Additionally, just one of the wait staff out of the ten plus we saw on duty was wearing a mask!!!! When I asked our pleasant waitress at the end of our dinner why almost every staff was without a mask, she said it was hard to wear a mask with all of the running around they do and, besides, she explained the air conditioning had been out earlier in the week. No explanation why the masks were not on when it was nice and cool during our dinner. No AC trouble today. She said she didnt know why they weren't required to wear them! This restaurant was also not limiting the number of customers, filling booths and sat another couple about 3 feet from our table! Very disappointing we have been so cautious on our trip only to make such a poor choice for our dinner tonight! I am sure it's usually well run, but sad they are doing nothing to protect their great team and customers! read more
