I really wanted to like this place. All the reviews on openrice pointed at a really great tasting restaurant. The service is absolutely great and the restaurant itself is super fancy looking and nicely decorated. We were given ipads to order, which seemed like a strange gimmick. Perhaps that is the new hipster trend.
We ordered a handful of food to try the menu starting with the wood ear appetizer. The flavor was bland and just did not have the zing we were looking for. The mushrooms were tough to chew, like they had not been soaked long enough. The vinegar sauce just did not provide a strong enough flavor. If you want great tasting wood ear, go to Din Tai Fung and try it.
We ordered the bbq pork, but it was thickly sliced and full of fat, so it was hard to chew. The flavor again was bland. If you want real bbq pork, go to the corner Wing Cheung BBQ shop, yeah it's ghetto looking, but way better tasting.
The rest of the food that we ordered included a green bean dish, sautéed beef dish, and fried rice. They were all okay, nothing wow, mostly bland. Presentation was great but that was about it.
Then came dessert, which we were looking forward to. Mango pudding and a steamed ginger cake thing. Youngest kid is not picky with her food but took one bite of the mango pudding and spat it out. It was fibrous and apparently not tasty. The ginger dessert was hard to chew and tasted much like cardboard, no flavor, no texture.
Service and physical decor are about the only things going for this place. Maybe we went on an off day, but it was totally empty with us and 2 other small tables. For a party of 6, our bill came out to be equivalent of $100 US and it was just not satisfying and we were still hungry. We cleansed our palate at the St. Honore Cake shop a short distance away. Maybe they were just having a really off day judging by the great reviews. read more
