My family buys me an exquisite orchid arrangement every year for my birthday. My house seems to have the perfect amount of filtered sunlight and we have learned by trial and error how much water it needs. My daughter does it by feeling the dryness of each orchid. Sometime we rotate the pot. When this arrangement arrived last April, only half of the blossoms were open, the rest were still buds. Then one by one the rest opened up. I think there are at least 40 blossoms and some last five months. Zuma Canyon Orchids is a very friendly family-owned business and their orchids fabulous. Their green houses are breathtaking. Beautiful place and wonderful service! We decorated the tables, bar, and welcome table for our son's wedding with orchids from Zuma Canyon Orchids. The owners selected the orchids so they would be almost at full bloom for the wedding. They potted them and we gave them away to the guests at the end of the night. It was so much nicer than cut flowers, less expensive, and gorgeous! Can't recommend more highly! read more

We are frequently in Malibu and decided to go here to purchase a gift for a local friend. Its sorta off the beaten path but we found it. The entrance is funky having to walk through an office to get to the greenhouse, but no big deal. Once in the green house most of the plants lacked prices and those which were marked seemed quite pricey! The Orchids were beautiful though I must say. They also had many creative arrangements. The real issue here is customer service. We noticed a Spanish lady in the greenhouse but when we needed a price she was no where to be found. Finally tracking her down she didn't speak English. Ok, so we remembered there was a lady in the office area we had to walk through. We take the plant we were interested in to her and she is on the phone. We wait no less then 10 minutes for her to get off the phone! When she hung it up, it was almost like we were inconveniencing her. Anyway she gave us a price and we paid and left.. Not sure we will go back based on the poor customer service and the steep prices. As another Yelper said, everything is extra.. Not just extra but they'll take your arm extra! Not talking a gold plated pot just something decent to present as a gift and the pots were as much as the plant. We wanted to patronize a local business but next time we will go elsewhere. The quality of the orchids and arrangements were nice that's why I feel 3/5 stars is more then fair based on our experiences. read more

This place is ok. They almost exclusively sell phalaenopsis orchids, but they aren't that cheap. Also they grow their orchids in a pretty hot greenhouse so most of the buds on mine got blasted. My paphiopdilum i found from there was a fair price, but he couldn't tell me how long it had already been in bloom. I don't think I'll bother making the trip back if I can drive a tiny bit farther to Westerlay. read more

I used to drive to the actual orchid greenhouses in Zuma Canyon to buy from this establishment. I now live in Seattle, Washington, and when I come back to LA to visit, I still like to go by there occasionally to get a gift. If you want to go to Trader Joe's and buy a ten dollar orchid, go ahead. I'd rather go to a lovely greenhouse where I can see the orchids in their various stages of growth, and see how they've been painstakingly selected and bred for their color and characteristics. Over the years, I've probably bought about 3 dozen different orchid plants from these people. Most I've given as gifts. I still have one in my house that is 15 years old! I've repotted it three times. It is a gorgeous, healthy plant, and I still think of the day I selected it when I see it. People with an over-reaching sense of entitlement who want beauty but want it on the cheap ruin great places like Zuma Canyon Orchids with their snarky B.S. Do us all a favor and run to Trader Joe's Saturday afternoons so you can feel good about your faux organic groceries, and leave the truly unique and beautiful things in the world off your radar. read more

I am sorry...this is not the friendly family business I thought it to be...the founder has died, the son George was not there and the people that met me where dismissive and condescending. I felt bad because I only had my memories of a great place whose time has passed...yes they have orchids but the spirit of joy and friendliness is no more. I shared my sadness with another floral person and she told me about called ORCHID FEVER on Culver Blvd in Culver City across from Sony Studios...they are WONDERFUL. THIS IS my THIRD TRY to write a review-- though I signed in correctly. Responding to the ONE review above: Having worked for Zuma Canyon Orchids in the past, I can safely say the following; Zuma is a labor of love. It IS ALL ABOUT THE PERFECT orchid. The nursery is beautiful, serene and full of gorgeous orchids. There are sections for fully blooming, there are newly blooming "babies" etc. The surroundings are breathtaking and storybook beautiful. And George is a perfect gentleman who would never think of matching the rants of a customer , His quietness is part of his nature when he disagrees- instead of going on and on and on. Yes, one can get more common, less expensive (at times) orchids at a roadside sale or grocery BUT one cannot get the hybrids they have at Zuma. A lot of time, patience, love and expertise go into those plants and I am quite sure that IF George was reluctant to move an orchid plant from ONE pot to the next - this is because they are a FRAGILE plant and as such, he treats them with extreme delicacy- with temperature control, humidity control, light, and certainly NOT moving them or changing them whimsically. That would be common practice at other nurseries but orchids are highly fragile. The pot, is immaterial to Zuma I am sure-- they are not about the sale-- but about pleasing the customer with a long life for a gorgeous plant with many blooms and potential blooms. They are low-key and do not advertise the plethora of highly discerning regular customers they have for photo shoots, weddings and events. They would not dream of that-- they have been there for decades and George and his father Amato are ALL about the plant--not the price. I know this for a fact-- they are also very respectful of everyone's privacy and I am certain they NEVER boast at WHOM they do have as customers. That review was the FARTHEST from the truth-- it is funny how a person can interpret caution or gentleness as "bad customer service". As far as describing the "deer in headlights" analogy-- how small can one get?? Wow--this is a nursery-- a beautiful, seasoned, award-winning orchid nursery. IT IS NOT a yuppie run- used car salesman effusiveness that some people may not be used to - it is more science than SALES but certainly very respectful. Too bad one cant say the same for that review. I have not spoken to George for year(s) now and wish to do so now. But I know he will be short on time as he is a hands-on owner. THAT because he protects the privacy of his customers and provides only the BEST orchids. read more

They're terrific. It was Oscar week. They had to be very busy. In fact, we knew they were when we saw the outstanding arrangements being sent out to the star studded names on the delivery instructions. We, on the other hand, were there with our keep-it-simple orchid for the anniversary of a friend. They could not have been more helpful to us if we had been the 4 Beatles come to fill Covent Gardens with Orchids. And the orchids we bought were very reasonably priced, fixed to our requests and ultimately, exquisite. read more

I have been going to them for years now... Always friendly and professional and absolutely the most gorgeous orchids ever! Yes, you can get cheap orchids for $9.99 at TJ and elsewhere but then again they don't last like the ones from Zuma (3x longer) and for not much more $!!! They put them into your vase (I always bring my own) and make them look fabulous with those green moss pom poms!!! Would recommend them anytime to anyone! It truly is a labor of love! read more

In particular, Anna has helped me with several tricky orders and made sure that the orchids arrived in good shape via mail. If I could assign zero stars, I would. This company has the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I met the owner and company at an Orchid Show at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino, CA at their exhibit and tried to purchase a plant from them. I wanted one type of orchid with one of their pots that was currently displaying another type of orchid, and was told that the only solution was for me to buy both plants. It was more than I was willing to spend, so I settled on buying the plant in the pot, but noticed the pot was of poor quality and asked to replace it with another, identical pot of better quality. The owner pushed me aside, agitatedly swapped out the original plant into the better pot, and shoved it in my face. The only reason I still decided to purchase the stupid thing from them was because my mom had expressed interest in the pot the day before and I wanted to give it to her as a gift. Ready to pay, I asked what the return policy is, and the lady working got a deer in the headlights look and ran to tell the owner I was asking about the return policy, at which point he rushed the table, said "NO RETURNS!" and in Spanish told the lady to explicitly write on my receipt "SOLD AS IS." I would not recommend this company to anyone, and I felt sick for giving them $45 for a plant I know I can get for $9.99 at Trader Joe's. Their flowers are nothing special and better customer service can be found anywhere else. I do not recommend them to anyone. read more
