Pair the tasting with all the stories behind the winery, and it's easily one of the more interesting experiences in Paso. The staff is also incredibly friendly and makes you feel welcome from the moment you walk in. The patio is a beautiful spot to taste, and if you're there later in the day, the sunset views are hard to beat. Definitely do the free cave tour while you're there. It's one of the coolest winery tours I've been on. The caves are a massive labyrinth carved into the hillside and naturally stay around 55 degrees year round, which is where they age a lot of their wine before bottling. Even if you've been to a lot of wineries, this is something a little different. At the time I'm writing this, tastings are still complimentary, which is almost unheard of these days. If you go, do them a favor and leave with a bottle or two. That's how places like this are able to keep offering experiences like this, and honestly, you'll probably want to take some wine home anyway.

Since it's more of boutique, the bottles are quite pricey, mostly ranging near the 100s. But it was our favorite the whole weekend we went there. And we bought 6 bottles. We loved the spell and got 3 bottles of that! It's a Syrah cab blend. Has the Paso flavor that we love. It's not a vineyard, just a tasting room but worth a visit. We met the wine maker too. They primarily serve reds (with a rosé available for tasting while we were in, and a white available by the bottle only) and specialize in Spanish varietals. I really liked the educational sheets they had about the Paso Robles AVA, and the map of the different districts. Wines weren't our absolute favorite, but we did end up getting a bottle of one of their garnacha's to bring home! What we didn't expect was to be completely blown away. The facility is on the smaller side without a lot of frills, but honestly that's part of the charm. The staff are warm and genuine, and you can feel their pride in both the winery and the wines they produce. The focus here is on GSM blends and other Rhône varietals, along with Bordeaux blends and varietals -- big, bold, and fruit-forward, but balanced enough to keep things interesting glass after glass. We had such a great experience that we joined the wine club before we left. We don't live locally, but the Ecluse Enthusiast membership is absolutely worth it -- especially with only a 6-bottle annual commitment. It's given us a great reason to make Paso an annual trip, and Ecluse is always one of our must-stop favorites. Since joining, the winery has gone through some exciting changes. They've built out a beautiful terrace overlooking the vineyard, and they were acquired by Thibido Winery. We were a little nervous about what that might mean for the brand we loved, but they've stayed true to keeping both labels separate and distinct -- and we've only benefited from it, since we now get to taste wines from both when we come for our annual pickup. We can't wait to spend more time on that terrace during our next visit. If you're putting together a Paso Robles wine itinerary, Ecluse deserves a spot on it.

After looking at their website and reading that they specialize in French style reds and offer a barrel sample with all of their tastings, this place quickly jumped to the top of our list. We didn't have a reservation, and it was getting close to their closing time, so we called ahead and asked if they had room for us, and we were told to come on up! We were helped by Sandy, Michael, and Steve (who is the owner). Just in our first three pours, we were helped by and talked to each one of them. They were all extremely friendly and knowledgeable on the wine, and very fun to chat with. The vibe here is super casual and everyone feels like family. We really liked all of the wines and getting to hang out in the barrel room, plus the hospitality was great, so joining the club was a no-brainer. We ended up taking home our shipment and two other bottles that we had tasted that weren't included in the shipment. Excited to come back here over the years and grow our collection and start aging our Ecluse wines!

It was the best view of all of the wineries I've visited and based on the other reviews, I'm not wrong. They used their plot of land well to Wow their guests... I sampled quite a few wines and liked a lot of them. The ones here are apparently different than the DAOU that's in most stores and restaurants. That's a shame actually... I was here in the morning so it was freezing cold out. I'd recommend for a morning tasting, bring a jacket or something (I was there in May). But as the morning neared its end, the sun warmed things up. My wine guy brought some crackers also as I was feeling a bit queasy from guzzling wine so early. Nice touch and prevented the hallways from looking like "The Shining" too. I also enjoyed watching and playing with Cheetoh, the cat who hung around the outside. He was pretty chill and friendly. He followed my wine guy around and let me pet him (the cat, not the wine guy). I'm glad I went and was upfront about why I was there. I think he appreciated it too and he did change my mind about DAOU. I get that it's a business so you gotta sell to the masses, but make some of these others available to us common folk. I figured we would be seated but the tasting occured standing up at the bar, which was fine. The tastings were generous, and customizable. My friend decided to do a white tasting, and I did the standard tasting. It was pretty hot, so about halfway through the tasting, we sat down at a table in the shade and walked up for the rest of our tastings but by that time, a large group had come through so the server was busier but still managed to remember where we were in the tasting. Our server was extremely knowledgeable and gave great suggestions. When we were done with our tastings, we walked around the property to look at the sculptures and the grounds. I did buy a bottle of wine and picked it up inside where they had other items for sale from local vendors, including our server who makes soap with her goat's milk.

The woman pouring was really nice and knowledgeable. I don't know much about wine, so this is more about the experience, but my friend loves The Philanthropist so we stuck with that.
