Your fast food counter has the worst customer service. My niece got her order taken by Viktor, she misheard him when he gave the total and handed him $20 more than what the total was. She said he looked at her like she was stupid. He then asked her where his tip was and before she could say anything a female worker whose name started with a K told Viktor "no, they look like they need the money more". My niece works in another restaurant in town and she was really upset to be treated this way because she would never treat her customers the way she was treated. As she waited for her order she then heard Viktor say "their shit should be ready". Is this how you let your workers talk to customers? Viktor does not belong working at your counter unless you don't want customers to come back. Do better. read more

Upon first entering Zippy's, my initial thought was "Denny's." Zippy's definitely has that diner look and feel and its extensive menu of Hawaiian and American comfort food reflects that theme as well. Since we were in Hilo during Father's Day, the restaurant was naturally very crowded and busy. Luckily they were able to seat our group of 4 after a 25min wait. My husband and I ordered the following: Chili Moco 3/5 Zippy's is known for substituting the gravy in a loco moco with their own chili. However the chili has a different texture and taste from chili you'd find on the mainland (continental US). The flavor is more subdued and the texture is creamier. In our group, it was either you liked it or didn't. Mahi Mahi 3/5 Even though seafood in Hawaii is amazing, we thought the Mahi Mahi plate had a bland taste. It was cooked fine but the thickness of the batter competes with the taste of the Mahi Mahi itself. Zippy's does have an extensive menu so I'd visit again to try out other entrees, and it's nice if you are looking for a diner type experience. I'm torn on how to rate them due to just the way they make you feel due to the pandemic. You have to stand outside and check in sanitize and take your temp. While sitting at your table your mask must remain on your face unless your eating or drinking. However Brandon our waiter was awesome made the experience much better. We bought food around 7pm took it home to eat which is about 20mins from there I called to get a refund manager said I would have to bring the food back that night before they close at 8pm to get a refund which was upsetting I mean gas isn't cheap lol. read more

All you have to do is take a look at the menu picture and see how they plate the food. They simply slop it on in a random way as if they hope customers don't notice. It is food for people who have no idea what decent food is. One example: the tomato sauce tastes like it just came out of a can. Boring is too nice a word to describe it. I ordred the pasta dinner and hated myself after tasting the sauce. Beyond the pasta disaster, the rest on the food menus looked as if Zippy's put NO ZIP into the originallity or care. I went here to order take out for dinner after getting held up late. Not a lot of places are open on a Sunday night so Zippy's certainly was convenient. The staff was on it; very pleasant and helpful. Also the environment in the restaurant itself is comforting. A few things though; the food was a little off. I ordered the Grilled Salmon and the Chilli Burrito. The salmon didn't seem to be salmon. I think it was actually Mahimahi. Not sure if that was a mistake or not. The serving size of the fish was two 3 by 3 inch square fillets, paired with three pieces of broccoli and two gargantuan scoops of rice. In my humble opinion, the portioning was off. As for the chilli burrito the portioning was great and the flavor was good. Lots of grease though. For these two dishes I paid around 25 dollars total, not including the tip I left. I feel like I didn't get my money's worth but Zippy's is located in a shopping mall. Prices in shopping malls have been known to be somewhat inflated so less bang for your buck is to be expected. Overall: average. One star for the staff, one star for the venue and one star for simply being open. read more

As it is Friday at 10pm n i had to wait 25 minutes with only 2 parties ahead and at least 6 tables open n when I queried the somewhat stiff n not too friendly hostess she stated that 2 waitresses just got off n only 2 were remaining till closing at midnight so they have to close half the restaurant because of that. My reply to that would be: Its Fair weekend so you know there will b more business than usual this weekend so staff accordingly as its the perception of laziness and or poor management to allow our group n the 6-9 other people behind us to wait that long to be seated! In honolulu and maui this would never happen on a Friday night!! Ok were r finally seated n Zion is awesome as our server but why did it take so long on a Friday just to get seated At Zippy's!! OMG!!! This was our first visit to a Zippy's anywhere, but you can say it's Hawaii's version of Denny's or IHOP with their special islander flair to it. Not really having much in mind as far as how it would be, we were just going along with the flow as we were two in a group of 19 consisting of 5 different families on vacation from San Diego. Many of the people in our group have been to Zippy's on other islands but we had no idea what to expect. We opted to go with their Oxtail Soup (I believe it was $21+ for the bowl) and their Korean Chicken (we shared the regular sized portion as it was only like $3 more than the mini). I also had their brewed iced tea which was very delicious as well. Oh boy, if you like Oxtail Soup, Zippy's serves up one pretty outstanding version of it let me tell you. We normally get our Oxtail Soup craving when in Las Vegas at the California Hotel's Market Street Cafe. Well, Zippy's blows that away! It was so good (the broth flavor, the temperature, the cilantro & peanuts), I don't think I shared much of the soup w/ my wife. Their Korean Chicken was also to die for! We're not accustomed to these dishes or let's just say the 'quality' of these kinds of dishes back in the mainland. Let's just say there were no leftovers to be had after this meal. If you visit Zippy's and don't know what to order, or have too many things you either like or don't like, go with two absolute winners: their Oxtail Soup and their Korean Chicken! Thought I'd try this place at the mall. Much to my surprise it was really delicious! I was for some reason expecting very average. I ordered one of the daily specials, Garlic Miso Chicken, it was just under $10 bucks w/2 scoops white or brown rice and Mac salad. The chicken was boneless, nice garlic/miso flavor, moist yet nice crisp on outside. Decent portion especially w/ all the rice. Counter server very pleasant. I asked for a side of sauce for rice and he happily suggested gravy and curry sauce, I chose curry and it too was delicious w/o an added charge. I will gladly enjoy eating there again, large menu.Only downside is so many choices hard to choose! read more

Came here for a quick meal after shopping. We decided to get the ox tail soup and the chili and rice. Their rice is so addicting! I don't know what it is but I can eat it on it's own! Their ox tail soup though! A bit pricey at $21 BUT after trying it, it was definitely worth the price. It has a very homey feel to it. It was FULL of ox tail!! It's such a bummer that this is the only Zippy's on the island. The service is okay. A bit slow, but not impressively so. What's disappointing is that the food is so bad. I love Zippy's. Saimin, chili, chicken, garlic bread. But for some reason this location overcooks everything. The Saimin noodles are mush, the chili is dried out, even my daughter's Mac n cheese is constantly bad at this location. How do you mess up Kraft boxes Mac n cheese? The included picture is how her Mac n cheese looked 1 minute after arriving at the table. It was so bad that I'm suspicious they served her someone else's leftovers. I use to love going to Hilo Zippys but now ever since this exaggerated pandemic, Zippys make me feel like you yourself got some sort of illness. Temperatures taking, cannot take off your mask until your food comes to your table, constantly being watched by the employees is too much to bare already. They are so over doing it that eating there is now a turn off. we havnt gone back to Zippys for the past 8 months and never plan to go back. I have several food allergies, but can usually find something that works for me, if the restaurant is willing to be a little flexible. This place definitely isn't one of those. The staff was clueless about allergies in general, didn't know what the food was made from, and when I asked to speak to the chef because they can usually tell me what's in what, they said the manager knew way more then the cooks. Not a good sign. So I asked what was in the corned beef hash to make sure it didn't have any of the things I can't eat and the manager refused to tell me, saying it's company policy to not give out recipes. I'm sure no one is looking to steal their mediocre hash recipe, and that's not what I asked, just what's in it so I don't die. Apparently they don't care. So I wasn't able to eat anything after our hours long drive and I was extremely hungry. If you have any specific needs, don't bother going here. read more

Its Two Hōkū (Star) Tuesday again!!! Before you start hating on me for giving the venerable chain Zippy's Two Stars, my rating is based solely on the service. The only Zippy's on the Big Island is located in Hilo, in the Prince Kuhio Plaza Shopping Center. We ordered oxtail soup ($14.95 - no pic. seasoned w/ five spice), large saimin ($5.65), small wun tun min ($6.70 - no pic), chili chicken mix plate ($10.55), and chili cheese fries ($5.90). My cuz had the oxtail soup, and I tried a bite. It was better than the one I had at Zippy's Nimitz on O'ahu. The broth was richer and the oxtails were meatier: 4 Stars. Saimin is a staple, and Zippy's does a pretty good job. My other cuz was stuffed from her soup that had nice fresh greens too: 4 Stars. Wun tun min is essentially saimin w/ 5 wun tuns. My other cuz liked hers and the wun tuns were not broken: 4 Stars. Unfortunately, the chili chicken mixed plate was very "mixed". Chicken: Very good, moist and tender. Chili: Very good also, but the portion was small. Salad: Terrible. It was like leftover lettuce. Overall rating: 3 Stars. Lastly, the chili fries were very good. Zippy's makes good chili, so when you put it w/ anything it is automatically good: 4 Stars. The ambiance is nothing to speak of: Basic Zippy's: 3 Stars. However, the service was horrible. Our waitress Kiara was not on top of things. She took another table's order before ours, the food took a long time to arrive, she kept saying she would refill my froo (fruit) punch, but it took her a long time to do so, and the noodles came out w/ no chopsticks or Azn soup spoon: 2 Stars. I wouldn't normally rate a place 2 Stars solely on the service, but I will make an exception here. I love Zippy's, but not this location. The service is too slow and not what I am accustomed to. My horrific Hilo Zippy' experience: -Cashier informed me 7 minutes after I order that they need an additional 10 to 15 minutes to heat up chili -Cashier informed me 10 minutes after my second order that they have only have one piece of mahi and if I would like a mini plate or hoki fish instead...no -My child and I ate fried noodles that smelled like ammonia - The cashier and Sky Park the "manager", at no time, expressed any care, concern, or regret -My replacement plate (for the mahi plate) had disgustingly wilted toss salad...nasty I am sickened with the entire ordeal and embarrassed for Zippy's. There are too many local restaurants out there that offer delicious food and appreciate their customers to put up with this. read more

Very slow to get food expedited out. Lots of workers walking around with no sense of urgency or pace and energy. Would not recommend unless you want mediocre food that takes an hour long. Ordered a large Portuguese bean soup (already made and needs to be heated up only) a scoop rice and one garlic bread....half and hour and the soup is ready with the one scoop of rice.....but now waiting on the garlic bread for another -15 minutes. Definitely not the great Zippys you might be hoping for! I Love Zippy's on Oahu, but this Hilo location is really alright or such a miss. The customer service is never spot on and they seem to like to call numbers out of order while you watch your order sit uncovered between the kitchen and counter. My latest disappointment was my Portuguese Sausage Omelet Sandwich this morning, which I have been craving for a bit. With a rise in price I didn't expect the portion would be halved. Instead of my breakfast sandwich being served on the regular bun, it was served on an appetizer sized dinner roll. Obviously, I'm leaving sorely disappointed. read more

I wanted to update my review since I gave Zippy's another try. This time, I tried ordering from their take-out line, thinking it would be faster. I was wrong. I waited 20 minutes for two plates of food. People who ordered after me were getting their food before I did. We sat outside of the restaurant to eat our food and I must say, it was pretty good. This time, I ordered the chicken katsu and my husband ordered the Korean chicken and we also shared an orange bang drink. The drink was delicious. It's like an orange creamsicle drink. Yum! I've tasted better chicken katsu, but for the price ($8.50) I got a lot of chicken and even had some left over. I've also tasted better Korean chicken but what I like about Zippy's is that their Korean chicken is boneless. I gave Zippy's one more star than I had before for a total of 3 stars. The food is still average and I would probably order from the take-out line next time before dining in, just because the food is a little cheaper. read more

We ordered online for pickup at 11:30am. We waited 30 minutes and called the store to check on the status of our order. We were told that they didn't have their tablet in front so they weren't alerted of the pickup that was ready. It was very disappointing when we finally received our order. I am reviewing the seat down portion of Zippys and not the take out portion. I have to admit that I was surprised with the menu. I'm used to just waiting in line and ordering food. But the restaurant section had a lot more on the menu and super friendly service! Thanks to our waitress, Gretchen, and guy who makes the best banana splits! I have to admit that the oxtail soup was one of the better ones I've had in Hilo. I was pleasantly surprised! It was full of meat and the broth was hearty (and not too salty or watery). She gave me a plentiful amount of ginger on the side and the peanuts made the veggies tadte even more nutty, which was great! It gives the soup more notes, then the average one dimensional soup. OMG so onolicious. The chili! The chili is so good we had it for breakfast. Hot malasadas are heaven in your mouth. They were so light and yummy. Hubby got corn beef hash and he enjoyed it. I don't have a problem with this Zippy's. Went twice and both times it was close to Honolulu Zippy's. No wonder because lets be honest, the chili is out of a bag. So it's the same chili. !EDIT! I just found out that Zippy's has raised their prices in Honolulu as well. ~$5 for chili/rice - and a somewhat small portion is too expensive IMO. Food came out at about the same speed as in Honolulu. I also tried the chicken katsu. It was ok, a little over cooked but not bad at all. I think this place is a nice addition to the mall. read more

Horrible experience here at the Zippy's in Hilo. My husband ordered the rib steak for dinner. The steak itself was rancid!!! There's NO WAY the cook wouldn't have known the meat was rotten before cooking it. They took the meal off the tab but the manager didn't even come out to apologize!!!! Zippys Hilo advertised Easter Day menu special. Was looking forward to it. Traveled 12 miles from North Hilo side, on Easter Sunday for dinner. Arrived at 430pm only to find it closed. Before making the trip there, looked on line for that restaurant's hours. Closes at 6pm according to what was on line. Got there only to find it closed. No communication on line stating that Zippys Hilo would be closed for Easter. Only has normal hours posted, no holiday "closed" or modified hours posted. read more
