I have been here several time, but this is the first time I was shocked by the prices! I think they must have increased prices recently. I almost wanted to leave the restaurant, but my mom wanted to stay. I got the seaweed salad and a tofu roll. I expected the seaweed salad to just be seaweed but they mixed it with beets and I think radish and carrots. It was beautiful and delicious. The tofu roll was simple but delicious! The meal was great, the service was fine, the location is simple. It is a nice place to dine, but I just can't get over the prices. But sometimes you just want sushi without the drive, parking, or hassle of a night out. You just want great sushi, at home. So, let's talk delivery... I get it--sushi delivery sounds sketchy. But Zen is the real deal. Established, consistent, and high-quality. So how did their delivery hold up? In a word: perfect. The website was easy to navigate, the order process was smooth, and they beat their 35-minute delivery estimate by a solid 10 minutes. Everything arrived carefully packaged--sealed, clean, and clearly handled with care. I don't eat out of styrofoam like a caveman. I like to re-plate and enjoy the experience as if I were dining in. When the sushi arrived, I popped the main course in the fridge for a few minutes while I plated and enjoyed the appetizers: beef gyoza and edamame. Both arrived warm and flavorful. Then came the main event--Tuna and Yellowtail Nigiri, plus a Dragon Roll. Letting them chill briefly brought everything back to the ideal serving temperature. Zen Sushi is a nice establishment and the go-to Bishop Arts sushi spot, but is lacking in all the areas required to reach 5-star status. The décor, service quality, and sushi taste isn't up to par with the price. The Bishop Arts District already has so many unique fine dining establishments (E.g. Paradiso, Lucia, Nora, Eno's, etc.) that Zen Sushi feels a little been-there-done-that. If I were Zen I'd try to occupy the niche that Bishop Arts doesn't have yet: A chill, cheap, open-late sushi spot that caters to locals with a smaller/cozier dining room and fewer operating costs. Perhaps even better, ramp up the website to place an emphasis on take-out and update the menu to highlight Asian night-in staples like fried rice and dumplings. The food was great but under the existing vibe and price I think Zen is relegated to 4-star status. read more

Went here with my friend last night. The place was half-empty on a Saturday night. We asked to be seated at a booth and the hostess huffily informed us she was saving those for larger parties -- even though most of the booths that were occupied were parties of two, like us. So we sat down in the uncomfortable little bar seats and looked around at the drab and dated decor while we waited, and waited and waited to be acknowledged. Then I remembered there was supposed to be a new sushi place opening in Bishop Arts, but weren't sure if it was open yet. We decided to find out. Otaru Sushi is in fact open. Everything is brand new. The decor is nice, The seating is comfortable. They let us sit at an open table without giving us attitude. The food was absolutely fantastic. Had it not been for the rude hostess at Zen who wanted to keep the booths open for imaginary parties who weren't showing up, we never would have found the other place! So thank you to her. Zen clearly got a little too comfortable with being the only sushi place in Bishop Arts and they really need to up their game and get a better attitude if they're not going be left behind. Went November 26th. Zen is a neat place in bishop and has some good things for sure but could use a couple things to put it over the top. I had the miso soup which I found more than a little disappointing (wouldn't recommend). The sushi was good we tried the vegan Inari maki, spider roll, California moon, and jalapeño roll. Of these I would say the California moon was the best and most surprising. The menu seems to be catered more toward vegan/vegetarian so I would say this is a great place for that crowd. read more

This was a nice little meal. Server was kind. Price is typical of Dallas. A few things that gave a minus on stars is I could see the kitchen staff in the back passing around a bag of chips while cooking and didn't appear to be washing hands before passing plates up to the hot side window. So I wanted to give a bishop arts sushi shop a try bc it's bishop and pretty much everything is good... unfortunately, that couldn't have been further from the truth with Zen Sushi. In sum: Substantially overpriced aged fish with bland taste and far from anything special or unique. Disclaimer: I only had sushi, sashimi, egg rolls (burnt), & Gyoza. First things first, our server Alicia was great. Nothing other than positive things to say about her other than saying everything was good when, after eating, I disagree. Ever, great service and incredibly attentive. She deserves praise. The food: not one of the better locations I've had sushi at, unfortunately. The fish was seemingly dated, coloration was off and noticeable. Wasabi/ginger was generic (pink ginger & very pasty wasabi). Most the sushi/sashimi taste the same for some reason. Genuinely wish it was better since the area would benefit from a great spot. The drinks: had the Texas mule which was good. One other downfall was that they say they're open until 10:30 but they close their kitchen at 9:45-10 which should be stated on the page ahead of time. All in all, I won't be back but if you're hungry hungry and only craving sushi then it's good enough to get you by. read more

Omg! We ordered Carnitas bao, spicy tuna roll, philly roll, caterpillar roll. The food was wonderful. The rolls could have a bit more fish in them and a little less filler (cucumber out the wazoo). The bao was amazing. The quality of the fish was excellent. We ordered take out and it was a little bit chaotic. We were asked a few times for our name and if we had been helped. Pretty much after paying we were ignored. It turned out our food had been sitting there the entire 20m that we were waiting. The delivery driver came in and ended up bagging it and preparing it for us. It was a little frustrating because we waited the 35 minutes it said it would take. I had high expectations for Zen sushi. The photos online looked great! However, the food itself was just ok. The ceviche was good but a bit misleading as it was on the sushi menu. I liked the chips that came with the ceviche, they were light and crispy. I didn't enjoy the spicy salmon as it was dry and the pressed salmon had twice the amount of sushi rice so I felt like it took away from the roll. The toro was a bit expensive but def worth it! White tuna and Salmon sashimi are my favorite and theirs was among the freshest I have ever had. The drinks were out of the norm and very refreshing. I highly recommend the white Bloody Mary. If you are a lobster lover you don't want to miss their lobster tail dish. You got to check it out. You'll be glad you did. They also have a vegan sushi menu. The food at Zen is delicious! I appreciate that they offer rice paper wraps for those of us who just do not like Nori. The yellow tail ponzu appetizer was phenomenal! I added double jalapeno and that combined with the daikon is to me, the perfect bite. I would go so far to say that I preferred it to the similar appetizer offered by Nobu. I would have given 4 stars at least if not for the hostess. The hostess sat as at the center two top table and prior to sitting down I kindly asked for an empty booth near the back. She rudely said no, because we were only two and they had to leave it open for larger parties (it was after 8 when we were seated) This table is a majorly high traffic area, the sushi bar seats basically back into your table and the booth next to us had two very loud children getting up and down running back and forth to the r/r. I had a large (very expensive) handbag that I had to set on the floor which is just honestly rude to force a customer to do. In addition, the table was just too small for sushi plates, other plates, wine, beer, and water. In effort to provide more space the waitress tried to clear plates but she took my husband's side plate for the sushi and his soy sauce so he couldn't even finish his sushi with the appropriate condiments - he had to wait until I finished and then use mine. All the above would have been forgiven if the booth in front of the one we requested hadn't already been sat with a party of two... and if the booth we requested hadn't sat empty the entire duration of our dinner. Seeing a party of two sat at the booth next to the one you were told you could not have, and which sat empty the entire time you struggled through dinner - was extremely off putting. It's important to note that the party of two finished their dinner within 10-15 minutes of us being seated which left 3 empty booths fur the duration of our dinner. Lastly, the waitress who was mostly good didn't bring my husband any chopsticks (his napkin didn't have any) and he had to get up and ask someone else and she forgot to ring in an item of our order - which fine, no big deal but it just sealed the 3-star experience. read more

My friend Gregory recommended this restaurant to me. He said that the food is incredible, that the restaurant operates at significant reduced capacity due to COVID-19, and that the owner (Michelle) has worked to avoid staff lay-offs in the midst of the pandemic. So he and I agreed to meet there yesterday at 7PM after he secured the reservation. The staff were friendly and the service was courteous. The real standout was the food quality. We started with the Chicken Lettuce Wraps. The chicken was perfectly cooked and well-flavored. The appetizer was a great size for two people to share. Based on reviews on-line, I ordered the California Sun (which everyone raves about). It did not disappoint. It was well-prepared and had a perfect spice level -- *almost* too hot, but actually just right. My friend had the Sake Maki (salmon roll) and Scallop Roll. I sampled one of the two and really enjoyed it. Having had sushi in Japan, I was impressed with the quality here. For dessert we each had the Ginger Creme Brulee. It was perfectly prepared and had a great light ginger taste. The owner, Michelle, also came by our table and chatted with us briefly. Just moved to the area so of course I had to give the local sushi provider a try. Our server could've been a bit more warm and ask before you take a platter (yes, sometimes we eat the veggie garnish). Also inquired about the difference between a few beers but he wasn't knowledgeable, then asked to keep my bottle so I could see him some deets - generally you should pour a beer 3/4 of the way and then serve it as you present the container as well- just saying. The gyoza was good, our rolls we good but overall just a typical sushi experience. It's a bit overpriced if you ask me but that's to be expected in this neighborhood. read more

This restaurant happens to be close to where I get my haircut. Which is perfect because I'm hungry but don't want anything too heavy. When you walk in you see beautiful tables but unfortunately for me they sat me at this long narrow sushi bar with no view because I was solo. My waitress was awesome she pointed out the most popular rolls which also happened to be the most expensive ones on the menu. One thing you always have to remember is that those who wait on you are also salesman and saleswoman. The bigger the bill the bigger the tip. I opted for one of the expensive rolls that had tuna, jalapeños and topped with thinly sliced lime and the smoked salmon with cream cheese roll. The roll with the lime on it is very good. However you need to like lime as the flavor of lime grows stronger over time. What I like the most is the freshness of the fish. You would think it was just picked out of the sea. This is a really good place for sushi. However if you want a good roll most of them will cost you upwards of $20. With that said, they got to pay they rent too!!!
