Great place to get coffee! Ordered a bag of coffee and they also ground it for me. I also ordered a couple of cappuccinos as we took a break from our walk around the city. I liked the open air feel and even though it was crowded, it wasn't very loud. I also liked the chairs because they looked like old school classroom chairs which are heavy and durable. I walked into Zeitgeist today after years of wanting/meaning to/not having time to stop. Practically skipping to the door, excited to this place that I have heard so many good things about, I was almost immediately let down. Outside the coffee shop, a quiet, polite gentleman asked me if I had any change. I said I didn't, I don't carry cash, but I'm going in here - would you like something? He was taken off guard, I believe, but I asked him to go in with me to pick something out. Once inside, the (what I assume is, after asking around) owner looked from me to my guest and immediately dropped his smile. Hoping to not completely sour this trip, I began ordering. Asked my friend what he'd like for lunch. If you've ever been somewhere that you know you are not welcome, you'll be familiar with what I believe this gentleman was feeling. He was having a hard time reading the menu, so he asked for a "house sandwich". Normally, at any restaurant I've ever been to, this will either be met with the person taking the order letting you know what that is, or having them give a suggestion of their own favorite. Instead, the owner(?) pointed at the menu again and said "the menu is right there". After I helped my friend figure out what they were ordering, I turned to order the drink I had initially come in for. It's fall and we are in the middle of pumpkin spice season. I asked if they had anything pumpkin for fall and was met with a "no.". Not having something is completely fine! I'm not bothered at all, as it is not on the menu and I was simply asking if it was something they were doing but maybe I was missing the advertisement behind, or attached to, the counter. However, this attitude of complete disdain for what I can only assume is, a basic white girl's coffee order, took me by surprise. Added with the bristly greeting that we had already received, I don't think I'll be going back. I should add that my guest was not belligerent, dirty, loud, rude, or generally disruptive. He was very soft spoken and the only indication that he was one of our unhoused neighbors was that he was carrying a rolled up sleeping bag. He gladly put on a mask as soon as we went inside. The venue is definitely dope. All urban wood and metal. Just a bit of a cliche now, but a very cool one. The space is crazy huge, but somehow manages to feel intimate. You can hang out in the corners, sit bar height. There were plenty of places to have a meeting, chill, or people watch without feeling cramped. The dark greys and large rich caramel wood island counter give a warmth while preserving the uber cool urban vibe. Like a mix of bar and coffee shop. Kudos to the designer. I had a latte and a salted caramel. I like it when a cafe distinguishes itself by serving something that others don't. Very special. The cuppa Joe was above standards for the rest of the country. Was it THE very best of Seattle? No. but this isn't the point I don't think . It's quirky and roomy with it's many tables to choose from. I'm so grateful to the friend that took me here for breakfast, early on Saturday morning, before going to a conference together in a building nearby. I loved the place. At 8:00am on Saturday most tables were empty but I can imagine it getting full later given the quality of the coffee and pastries they have here. I also loved the decor and the building, and all the different types of sugars and sweeteners they had available for coffees. I took a small cappuccino with soy milk and my friend a large latte. She also had a croissant that looked really good while I went for the gluten free orange and blackcurrant scone. That was a huge scone, perfect because I was quite hungry that morning, and it was truly delicious. All together added up to a bit less of $10, which seemed quite reasonable given the area and the prices that you'd pay for example in an Starbucks (2 coffees alone would be more than that). If I lived in Seattle I would keep going back to this place for sure. read more

The main problem at Zeitgeist is that once I'm there, I just don't want to leave. The coffee is excellent - for my money Zeitgeist makes the best mocha to be had in Seattle, rich and flavorful, with the chocolate enhancing the taste of the coffee rather than overwhelming it, and a generous top of whipped cream. The pastries and food are similarly delicious and unique, from the savory croissants to sweet hand pies and espresso cookies. As if great coffee and tasty food were not enough, add a warm and inviting atmosphere - red brick walls and lofty ceilings, a rotating art display on the wall, and a variety of music playing. Today was romantic classics like "La Vie en Rose" and "They Can't Take That Away From Me," but other days it might be modern alternative or rock classics, somehow always fitting the moment perfectly. Did I mention that I took my wife there for our first date? That I proposed to her there too? Not the same day of course! I've been coming To Zeitgeist since 2000 or so. To this day, I often sit by the window and watch the city go by down Jackson street, in all its infinite variety, a book in one hand and my warm cup in the other. I savor each moment, each drop, and when I finally have to leave I inevitably look forward to the next time I can go to Zeitgeist and spend a little time taking it all in. I've always had horrible experiences with the service here. Some of the baristas are incredibly rude. For example, today I asked for an iced green tea - barista really didn't want to be there for the entire brief interaction - she calls an iced chai and after it sitting there for a minute and her looking over at me every couple seconds, I say I ordered an iced green tea, was there a mixup? She immediately says in a snotty voice "You said chai." The other barista comes over tells me they don't even offer iced green tea and offer me an iced black tea instead which I say is great. Barista #1 rolls her eyes and I leave with an iced black tea I payed an extra dollar for. The drinks are mediocre for the area. read more

This is typically where I will go if I want a nicer cup of espresso (typically drink Americanos) when I'm at work. I work over and the Union Station complex, and realistically the only other nicer coffee shop in the area is Easter Cafe in the ID, but I prefer this. The staff is always super friendly and they typically will get your coffee out to you pretty quick. The environment is super chill and when it's not busy in the office we might even choose to stay and drink our coffee there and enjoy a nice conversation. read more

Industrial feeling interior, cold haughty staff, no out door seating, and no unique or interesting drinks to be found. They've decided to take the reductionist approach to a menu, without the increased quality to rationalize it. Came here as some redditors ask I compare their mocha to that of Chocalati: there is no comparison. The mocha here is made with bland chocolate syrup, just like you could at home, with only boring white or dark varieties. At Chocalati they use real melted chocolate, and mix it with all sorts of interesting flavors (including real peanut butter)! If you think the mocha here is good, I urge you to walk - no run - to Chocalati to see what a mocha really can be. read more

It's Sunday at 3pm and they're blasting "Me So Horny" and other 2 Live Crew songs over the speakers. It's so loud that I've got my own ipod on "screw my eardrums" volume setting and I'm still got "me love you long time.." blaring in my ears. But why is putting up with one of the worst songs imaginable such as "Put her in the Buck" worth staying at Zeitgeist? 1. They got freaking air conditioning which is valuable when it gets ball sweat hot in the late summer. (thanks for the tip Michelle B) 2. Free wi-fi! 3. They have outdoor seating for days when Amelie the dog wants to sit outside and meet the homeless who inevitably want to pet her. 4. They make a decent sandwich and salads. 5. The bathrooms aren't so nasty. (remember to get the key from the counter) 6. They have interesting artwork on the walls. 7. They have a rack of free flyers and Seattle Weekly/Stranger so I don't need to go outside and get an issue to look at the nasty back page. Things that keep Zeitgeist from perfection: 1. They need to get more outlets as they are only 3 in the café and those seats are always taken. And when someone gets up from a table near the outlets you gotta pretend your in the Thunderdome and fight off the others just to be able to plug in your computer. 2. They close at 7pm which is quite early for me since I wake up at 2pm on the weekends. 3. Limited drink menu and on the pricey side. 4. They blare their music inhumanely loud and the music is either hipster or offensive with nothing in between. 5. Sometimes there's too many damn hipsters that hang out there. There's also an ATM inside. If you've ever visited Pioneer Square you'd know that ATMs are hard to come by this area. If you used an outside ATM in the area it would be a death wish with the nearby population filled with the homeless and crack dealers. Who knew that a café could do so much to reinvest in the community? Lastly, Kerrie L. has spent some significant time at Zeitgeist studying and she's reported that cracked out crazy people will sometimes wander inside. I just think it's the regulars at Joe's Bar who got confused and went to Zeitgeist by accident. On the other hand, I'd take the crazies at Zeitgeist and Joe's Bar over the douchebags at Trinity or Heaven's night club any day! read more

I walked in at about 9:30 this morning, and the line was like, twenty people long. Holy fuck. But the baristas kept it moving, and I was fully caffeinated in about five minutes. Damn, that's fast! Also, a girl who claimed to be a stripper asked what I thought about her taking an anonymous pill that she was given as a tip at work the night before. I tried to steer her away from taking it, but she seemed like she really wanted to. So she did. (I was working, so I unfortunately had to say "no" to her generous offer to share it with me.) When I walk into the Zeitgeist, I'm always magically transported to a much hipper city than I live in. The smell of good coffee, old books, brick and the slightly sweet and savory smells of the food blend into something I wish I could bottle. And then, sometimes the lingering smell of the oils from the current exhibition on the walls takes it over the top and I feel like I just have to sit down and breathe it in. Normally, this kind of coffeehouse can make me feel out of place, baristas looking down on my lowly decaf like I'm riding with training wheels in the tour de France. Zeitgeist: The spirit of the times... or at least that's what the dictionary tells me it means. And I'm not sure what that really says about this cool coffee shop down near the stadium because, well, it's not necessarily current or modern. It's more classic in the sense of the old school Seattle art-house coffee experience. I tend to hit this coffee house more than any other in the Seattle area simply because of its proximity to the Amtrak station. I go by train. A lot. And often I need to fuel up before departing for points south or upon arrival. The alternatives in the area are corporate and blah. Zeitgeist, on the other hand, makes some decent brew, has a great vibe and a lot of space to chill. Plus they offer something that most coffee houses don't - legitimate, substantial savory options (alongside plenty of sweet/pastry selections). There simply seems to be something genuine about this place, which in the era of often-pretentious single-origin-focused micro-roasters and chain coffee domination is a welcome respite. Came in out of the rain after the Underground tour. We were tired from not much sleep mixed with a lot of activity that day...and some of us had to recharge for what was to come later. Walking in, the decor was just this side of breathtaking. As Ari C said, "Cafes in SF are NEVER this nice!" High ceilings, nice wood, just overall a very nice feel. And it was warm, cozy. The coffee and espresso drinks were really good, good enough for one of my companions to tell me that she would consider moving to Seattle with me for them.
