A tale of two visits. First one we've all experienced. Goto work; you're eventually driving around doing errands and you need a drink. I park into Zaxbys only to realize I've gone all day without my wallet. I'm about to inquire about tap to pay options using my cell phone (been years since I used it). Needed an update and I was about to walk out empty handed when an employee just hands me a large drink cup for free. Well, it was high time I returned (with a wallet) for an actual meal. Second trip I roll in and order the half tenders half boneless to go with a large drink. Head back to the truck and dig in. The boneless was nicely sauced and the tenders were fine with the provided dipping sauces. Sides, well there aren't many choices. Same as that Canes place. This unfortunately is happening too often in these chicken chains. Fries and slaw are fine but I want variety in sides so you don't go into boredom. (Note: I write Facebook reviews for residents of Turner's Crossing, a new development in Buda, as we all learn about good places to dine in Austin.) ------------- Here's a brief review that I will keep to only a few paragraphs because I don't expect to be going back. And if I'm not going back, chances are darn good that my wife isn't either. Zaxby's is on Old San Antonio Road in Buda in the midst of Fast-Food Franchise Row. Karen and I were trying this place for the first time in the two years we have lived in Turner's Crossing. The fast-food zone is very convenient to us, so it is often a last-minute destination. However, it wasn't the food that got my tighty whities in a bunch. I was flabbergasted after getting an order including wings slathered in barbecue sauce when we were told they were out of napkins. Did they expect us to wipe our fingers on our clothes? Or just lick them clean? The vinyl upholstery in the booths was beckoning, but I figured that was probably a bridge too far. An employee just shrugged her shoulders, basically wondering what we expected her to do. We told her to find some paper towels in the kitchen or refund our money and we'd go elsewhere. They found the paper towels. We also suggested that they warn customers about the lack of napkins BEFORE they order finger food covered with sauce. Food was edible but nothing to rave about. Karen had the veggie egg rolls. She finished them, but pronounced them nondescript. Certainly not worth a return visit. I had a combo plate of the nicely sauced wings and some pretty good chicken fingers. My bone-in wings were meaty and decent, but the chicken fingers and especially the fries were over-salted. Most of the chicken fingers came home with me for lunch tomorrow because I really enjoy that stuff cold too. There's also a limit to how much salt I can ingest at one sitting. The thick-cut fries were actually quite tasty, but after a few bites the salt just became overwhelming. Of course, our enjoyment may have been colored by the apparent lack of interest in paying customers. Went here and the food was actually some of the worse chicken i've ever had at a fast food restaurant. Not sure if it was just the day I went or what. I instantly regretted not just going to another place in the area. Pretty expensive to get bad food. Only thing that made it two stars were the fries which were actually okay. I can't in good conscience leave my old 4-star review up. Don't get me wrong, the food tastes delicious, but the service at this location just keeps getting worse and worse... and the time it takes to get the food keeps getting longer and longer... We were there again Friday night and it took 25 minutes from placing our order at the register to receiving our food. I'm pretty sure 10 minutes of that it was just left sitting on the back counter, because we could see numerous boxes stacking up with no one distributing them and because our meals were lukewarm once they were given to us. I had to microwave mine at home. The affect of all the young employees ranges between pure ambivalence and "please someone kill me and put me out of my misery." The orders are often a little screwy too... like I'll order one sandwich and receive a different one. That's typically okay because I like all the items on the menu, but it can be a little disappointing if I had my heart set on something particular. Also the ice machine at this location has never worked in the dozen or so times we've been there. We always take the food home and use the ice at home, but I can see how this would be very frustrating for those with plans to dine in. This was out first time trying this place. We were staying at a nearby hotel and wanted to try something new. My reasoning for three stars is because I eat a lot of chicken tenders and I'm comparing it to the flavoring of others. I will say the staff was very friendly and the manager let us know he was out of cole slaw. It wasn't a big deal and we appreciated him letting us know. Our food was super hot and we loved the sweet tea. I just felt the chicken tenders tasted bland. I honestly thought Bill Millers was better. The fries were crinkled and good. Well I finally found my go to meal at Zaxby's- OMG the hidden secret is their covered fries meal. Chicken bacon ranch loaded fries for just $8,19 this is a very healthy portion of fries covered in chicken, cheese, bacon and then ranch - it's very filling and by far the best thing I've eaten on their menu. So next time you go there and can't decide give these a try you will not be disappointed. I love the Buda location and their app works perfect. staff are always friendly. read more

We came in from out of town and decided to try Zaxby's. The decor was cute. I love all the different walls from around the area. I grew up in San Marcos so this was pretty neat. We eat Raising Cane's pretty regularly back home. This was decent but nothing we would chose over our Raising Cane's. We thought the chicken was less juicy and the sauce not as good. I thought Zaxby's fries and toast were better but my son did not. We didn't really like the cole slaw. We both enjoyed the soda machine. It was a lot of fun to pick all the cool, unique flavors. Fried pickles were crunchy but had more batter than pickles. Overall, it was not bad. It just wasn't our favorite place. To each their own though. Give them a try and see what you think. read more

As a chickfila alternative or Raising Canes clone, I love Zaxby's. They serve some delicious wings and some of the sauces are so so good. I always get a combo meal with wings and strips. With other chicken places so readily available in the area I'm shocked this place is still standing. I decided to switch things up and went here with my mother on a visit. The guy who took our order insisted on mumbling everything he said and we had to ask him to repeat himself no less than five times. Asking him what we should get he said whatever we thought looked good. I ended up ordering a chicken sandwich and my mom got the strips, and when I asked for a sauce it was 39 cents per sauce, which once I got it the tiny container was only 1/4 full and tasted like vinegar with red food coloring in it. They were completely out of ice and the tea was weak. The whole place looked dirty and the floors had a grime on them, but the booths were clean enough. Once we got the food I was shocked to find that the sandwich had cold cheese, un-melted, cold sauce of some mayo-based variety and cold pickles and a plain, cold bun which all led to my sandwich being a lukewarm mess with an un-crispy and plain-tasting breast. Not even a salty flavor. Just... Plain. The fries tasted like they were frozen from a bag at Walmart. I should have gotten my money back but didn't... Just avoid this place. I was hoping for a new place to add to my cycle of restaurants since it's close to home but it has no redeeming qualities. Disappointing. read more

I've been to other Zaxby's and I know this is not the type of service or food that they usually have so I was disappointed. My partner and I have been coming here regularly for at least the last 6 months. It's a quality fast(ish) food. There are times that the wait is a little on the long side for fast food (like 15 minutes). But the service is good and the chicken is always delicious. To the nice folks working here: about three weeks back I came here on a Sunday and there was a couple of rather rude customers. Two customers had grabbed the wrong orders because they had misheard which name was called out and some unrelated customer was making a fuss about it. Ya'll are doing just fine and that was a really understandable mistake, the customer was out of line. I didn't speak up because I didn't think that would deescalate the situation, but I'm not sure that was the right move either. read more

I went to this location at Buda, TX and it was in the afternoon after I took a customer to Austin, TX and on my way home, I thought I would try zaxby's because there is one opening close to where I live in San Antonio. So, I wasn't too happy because the prices were just very high for ordering 10 wings and they were so small that $14.99 for 10 small winds were just a waste. Also, the young lady that was taking my order had a cold and/or cough while she was wiping trays. Also, the atmosphere in this restaurant was just unhappy employees and when I was asking for more ice, I was brushed off by an employee and rudely told to go to the front counter. I will not be recommending this location and it's in Buda, TX off of I-35. I spent $24.43 for 10 very small flat wings, cheese curds (which didn't even fill the tray it came in), and a large soda. This was an expensive lunch, being a rideshare driver trying to make money that day. I should have just gone to chick-fil-a or even Raising Canes and spent a lot less on my lunch. These two restaurants that I've mentioned has HAPPIER EMPLOYEES and they greet you with the ultimate respect. This Zaxby's location has UNHAPPY EMPLOYEES. read more

We had two 4 count tender meals with crinkle fries (just ok), cole slaw (just ok) , some kind of buttered toast and Zax Sauce, which is the Mayo and Ketchup concoction like at Canes. In fact, this place probably had their whole tender meal concept ripped off by Canes! It was pretty much the same. This is a redo review. It's been a year since my last one. Zaxby's has done better, the food is much more enjoyable than in the past. I usually order a fingers plate tossed in Nuclear. Don't bother asking to "go big" on your orders. 30% of the time they get it right by giving you the extra fires they are suppose to. And if you want extra fries just get the regular. I've orders the different sizes to see if there is a difference, and there isn't, why pay more for the same amount anyway. I wish they would bring back the "basket of fries." If you want something similar you'd have to get the "loaded fries." It comes with shredded chicken and bacon (usually just 1 big piece instead of sprinkled bits) with melted cheese, of course at the cost of an extra $3-$4. I'm still having a hard time enjoying their wings. I always have better luck with the chicken if I get the fingers. Another nice thing, is that they put all the sauces in a separate bag. In the past, they would just been put in the bag. And crushed on the drive home, and then before you can eat your food you have a bunch of cleaning to do, not to mention you don't have any extra sauce anymore. Do make sure you get your forks, they usually aren't in the bag either. The staff is usually very nice. read more
