Upon walking in, we were greeted by Noah and The kind Navy veteran ( I forgot his name). Both were very kind and welcoming. They were holding a dnd tournament and it looked like locals love hanging out here. They have a wide variety of TCG singles, booster packs, and sleeves. Few things about me: I'm a nerd. I hate scalpers. I love a good deal. And in this crazy world, I really fuckin value good customer service. I recently got back into collecting Pokemon cards and I'm so glad I stumbled across Zander's Game House in Camarillo. Story time: it was my buddy's 32nd birthday. I'm doing Sober October (so no booze for now), and I've been replacing that with video games and Pokemon collecting. So, we spent the day cruising the 805, hitting every card shop we could find -- and what a score to find Zander's open until 10PM, selling packs close to list price with purchase limits to keep things fair. That alone made me a fan. But what sealed it was the customer service. Jeanne S. went above and beyond -- from setting packs aside for me when I called or messaged, to inviting me into their Discord community. Every interaction has been genuinely welcoming. The shop's always got great energy -- D&D campaigns, Magic: The Gathering matches, and people just hanging out enjoying the hobby. These are my people: nerds, enthusiasts, and lovers of all things Zander's. I finally found it and the staff couldn't have been nicer! Basically all I did was walking through doing a quick looking around and told them I'm a blogger/reviewer and I host events. They willingly just verbally threw up a lot of great information of the store, and even walked through with some of the store with me, chatting. Talk about going above and beyond! Mixed Feelings - Great Space, But the Fees Don't Make Sense As someone who plays a variety of trading card games, I occasionally stop by Zander's. I wouldn't say it's a typical card shop with a wide product selection or a relaxed environment where you can crack open packs and play freely. Instead, it feels more like a game space rental, you're essentially paying for a seat at a table. The store itself is great: it's clean, spacious, and the staff are always courteous and helpful. I give them full credit for their customer service and their efforts to engage with the community. When it comes to products, their selection isn't vast, but they do stay current with new releases. However, they don't sell singles, which can be disappointing if you're hoping to build or tweak a deck. Another thing to note is that their sealed product pricing is unusual. Rather than offering a discounted price for a booster box (as most shops do), they charge MSRP per pack, even when buying an entire box. That means you're paying more than you would elsewhere, which doesn't really make sense from a buyer's perspective. They also carry a variety of snacks and drinks, which is a nice touch, but most of them are overpriced. You could walk a block to a local store and get the same items for much less. But if you do that, you're hit with an "outside food or drink" fee, which feels excessive, especially when you're already paying to sit and play. And that brings me to the main issue: the fees. I've played at many shops around the Tri-County area, and Zander's is the only one that charges a fee just to sit down and play with your own cards and supplies. I get charging for use of rental games, organized tournaments, or store-provided materials, but if I'm simply using one of your empty tables to play a casual game with my own deck, why am I paying? All of this adds up to a feeling of being nickel-and-dimed. You're charged to sit, charged for outside drinks, and there's no product discount incentive. It takes away from the enjoyment of what should be a casual and social experience. Also worth noting: the environment is very PG. While that's great for families or younger players, it can feel a little restrictive if you're looking to hang out with friends and joke around with more adult humor. It's clear they aim for a more reserved, family-friendly vibe, nothing wrong with that, but it's something to be aware of. Overall, Zander's has a lot of potential and does some things really well but the pricing model and play fees make it hard to justify regular visits. read more

This is a great little shop! I love the family, friendly vibe and their board game selection is second to none. We couldn't go into the bigger room due to a private event, but got to peek in. My son loved the cheap Pokémon cards and I was able to prove their little section of dungeons and dragons bits, and bobs. If you're looking for Warhammer or paints for your miniatures, this probably isn't my first choice... but will be coming back here for board games and a family afternoon very soon! read more

The team at Zander's is always helpful when I need something gaming related. They are very popular with the card game crowd and usually have something going on. We especially love it for some quality family time that doesn't involve a screen especially on a rainy day. We came here on a Thursday evening since it was a PTA fundraising event for my daughters' elementary school. We have lived in Camarillo for about 10 years now and finally had a chance to visit Zander's. Overall, it's a great establishment. It's very clean inside and the games are all clean and well maintained. The game selection is so wide, there are games for all ages. I'm so happy Zander's exists, not only for casual board gamers, for kids with special interests or just somewhere safe to hangout after school, but also for nerdy board gamers like me and my husband. Zander's has cultivated a collection of games that's for every person, couple, or group and for every kind of board gamer whether you're newer or seasoned - from classic games like Candy Land to more modern games like Catan. The owner Jeanne is so passionate, kind, funny, and is always happy to help you find a game that's right for you. We even asked if they had one of our current favorite games - Here to Slay and although they didn't have it at the time, we described the game and Jeanne ordered it right away! There are so many ways to enjoy Zander's. It's $5 a person to play any game all day and you can check in and out (grab some lunch and come back - there are so many great restaurants around). You can rent a game for $5 and borrow up to 3 days. They even have designated game nights if you check their calendar (D&D, etc). There are also snacks and drinks for purchase. Jeanne is awesome, she was very welcoming to my wife and I as we wanted to see her board game shop while we were on vacation this week. After seeing so many games we've wanted to try for years we decided to pay the very inexpensive $5 per person cover. We played 3 games over several hours before heading out to dinner at a place Jeanne recommended. The first game we had to play was Scoville as it's been on my wishlist for 7 years. It's about cross breeding peppers and was really fun. Next we played Quacks of Quedlinburg and it is a fun bag building, press your luck game. Finally we played Potion Explosion which uses marbles in a fun new way to determine which ingredients you get. Overall we had fun, and if we lived closer by we'd be here every week. We made a note to try spending at least an afternoon here each time we're down in Ventura. Zander's is great fun if you and a group of friends or family (in my case) love board games. They have a vast selection of games available to play from classics like Chess and Monopoly to some great complex and unique games like Scythe. They also have some snacks to eat while you game and it's an excellent place to play dnd! They will even help you recruit players for a dnd game and reserve a table for you. There inventory isn't the best when it comes to card games and board games (though they will special order games for you if you request) and their magic the gathering offerings are pathetic compared to their neighbor +EV Games (only a few miles away). Their stock is low and they charge an arm and a leg for basic booster packs (when I went in there they were minimum $7 a pack depending on the set) where +EV Games sells packs for the same price as Amazon and Target. I there for recommend Zander's for all games EXCEPT Magic if your looking to play in Camarillo. They do charge to play in the shop but it's a cheap flat rate without a time limit so it's fair imo. read more

I thought I was going to hate it. You know what - it was a fun way to spend five dollars for entry and a few hours. There are adult games, fantasy games, war games, kids games and the usual chess and similar games. I went on a weekday night. A lot of people meeting up after work brining their own games and having fun with large groups of friends. Primarily men but there were some women too. All ages! The owners are super nice. The snacks and drinks are reasonable in price and so many to chose from. There are nearby restaurants and I did not get a hard time for bringing in my soda from dinner at a nearby restaurant. I am thrilled to finally see something thriving in Old Town besides the restaurants and bars! So take your friends, take your family - don't have any? Go make new ones here! read more

Blockbuster for games?! It's the family night my 90s self wanted and needed, but didn't have available! I popped over a few days ago to find a game to buy for my husbands birthday, to my surprise it's not the game shop I had in my mind, it's much better!Traditionally the game shops I've been to are mostly store front, with maybe a few tables around back for D&D or other group games. This is more of an event space to come play games, with a table or two of purchaseable items. BUT, don't let that stop you. If you want game play at home, most of the games in the store are rentable. For $7/game you can bring that game home for 3 nights! It's genius! There is a huge range from preschool age to family games to complex strategy games to all out takes-an-hour-just-to-set-up games. The owners were in the shop when I came and were super helpful and friendly. I'd been here before the pandemic and it was so busy I don't remember who was working or anything, but when I came the other day it was only 2-3 people inside and they were so friendly with every person who came through. This is a really great establishment for families and I can't wait to spend more time here! read more

I've been coming for Saturday Board Game day for a while and really enjoy it. The people are all nice and welcoming. Lots of games to choose from. When you come to board game day you'll find others there and then people choose games. Sometimes you break off into smaller groups of 3-5 and then you choose a game. The options are varied and people are great with teaching games. Invariably I want to go longer. A great experience. Nice way to be social and enjoy yourself. Also to try out games. Small amount of games for sale - if you need. Not a lot. More game house than game store FYI. Also seems to be D&D groups there too. Might be other games as well - I just go for the board games. As a board member of my organization, I come here once a month for our young adult meetup. Jeanne and her family are so accommodating and welcoming. The selection of games is exceptional, to say the least. A better question would be to ask what they don't have. Makes me wish I had a place like this when I was a kid. I've been yelp stalking this place for a while now, with the intention of going every time I'm in in the area. I finally made my way in recently after a tragic Connect 4 loss to Brian, the owner of Zander's, during the Camarillo Street Fair. Brian plays with 100% confidence, skill, and what seems like a lifetime of daily Connect 4 practice. I was eager to spend my first time at Zander's giving Brian a run for his money, but unfortunately he's just the pro and I lost two additional times. Though it was all in good fun, he took the time to show me some of his tips and tricks so I could improve on my next Connect 4 battle. As the other yelpers stated, $5 will get you access to ALL the games Zander's has to offer. Games range from classics like monopoly to more popular games like Catan. There really is a game for everyone or even a puzzle/sudoku game to solve. Fun new activity for Camarillo! I was excited to find out that this place was opening, and it lived up to my expectations. Brian and Jean were super friendly and very well-informed about all the games. The selection of games was solid, from accessible old-time Milton Bradley favorites and modern party games to really complex strategy games like Axis and Allies or War of the Ring. Their selection of "theme" games includes Game of Thrones, War of the Ring, a wide assortment of Star Wars games, a 40k game among others. They have a solid selection of Euro games too including many Catan variants, Ticket to Ride etc. The atmosphere was fun and inviting. Brian and Jean were good hosts and helped us find accessible and easy-to-learn games. If you're not already into board gaming you don't have to worry, they'll make sure you have fun by finding the right game for you. They also have a lot of great snacks and drinks on deck, including home-baked brownies on the indulgent side and veggie trays on the lighter side. This was a wonderful find. As we walked by the storefront, we noticed a sign and stopped to read it. The owner came out to explain what type of establishment this was and invited us in. So many different types of games lined the shelves on the wall. He chose one and we sat down to play it with him. We had a wonderful time learning this game and just having great conversation. For a small fee of $5 each, you have unlimited access to any of the games they have for the time you're there. They will teach you the game should you desire. this afternoon I decided to check out Zander's game, I read on the internet they sold dice and table too games, I am new to dice playing games so going in, I asked the lady at the front, if they sold dice at here, with a sarcastic remark she said "do we sell dice?" and then glanced over at her co worker and said "this guy is in here asking if we sell dice.", now me being out of the scene and environment of table top board games, I felt bullied that I didn't know what I was getting into, she then showed me her dice section, with pride expecting me to be shocked, she then asked what dice I was looking for, I told her I was looking for a 30 sided dice, she then said, oh I don't think I have one of those, we don't carry those. Walked into this place as the words "Game House" caught our attention and we were so pleasantly surprised! For 5$, you can play any and all of the 800+ selection of board and card games they have. This is an awesome place that I never knew existed even though I would drive past it every time to head towards thousand oaks. I went with about 7 other friends and we ended up staying there from 7pm all the way to closing time which was 11pm. I also love how they have snacks there, I think the MOST expensive snack they have is around $5 which was a giant family size pack of M&Ms. This place is amazing with the amount and diversity of games that they have, from games for kids to more adult-like games. Also, the owner is the coolest guy ever! He'll come over to your guy's table every now and then to see how you're doing and to explain the game if you're having trouble. He'll even recommend you games if you don't now what to play and even gave me a free Wendy's cookie just before closing time.
