SO needed in our community…read more I love that it has SO many things for littles: They offer story time & bubble dance parties, dress up costumes, A play cafe & farmers market shop, A "camping" area, A sensory garden space, A "dig pit" with fossils, Water tables, A baby area with blocks & board books, And for the bigger kids- There's fun climbing structures, A sloped hill for "surfing" down, A creative space for crafting and science experiments, A whole wall for assembling Legos! And there seems to be more every time I go. There's enough to keep many kids busy for 2 hours or more (depending on their attention span). I also love that tickets give all day access, so you can leave and return, same day. It's next to a nice shaded area with picnic tables so you can have a little picnic lunch and go back in after. The facility is nice and clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Bonus: Their annual membership makes it SO worth it after just 3 visits!! Really a good value. She was upset that I had used a selfie stick to take a picture of the main gate. (I was standing outside of the property.) She explained no selfie sticks were permitted. I understand there are "rules" but these rules were posted inside. I think her approach could have been more professional. I was not on live in social media, I was not involving any other guests, I wasn't interfering with anyones enjoyment of the property, and I wasn't even taking a selfie. My friend and I were disappointed with this reception. It marred our visit. I visit gardens and museums in locations within and out of the US, docents usually receive guests with kindness and provide guests with information on the grounds. Do better docents. Do better.

Kudos! Second, the hostess / cashier was extremely welcoming, informative, and gracious. She was happy to see us, which is always a nice feeling. She let us know that there was a group meeting down in the basement about to get started in 7 minutes, but that we could go down there to see a collection of weavings on display. We popped down to check them out. While not mind-blowing, it was a fairly extensive grouping of closely woven pieces of varying size and design. Back up on the main floor they had their current traveling exhibit of artwork from the collection of the Mullin Automotive Museum. The varied works of photography and paintings in various media are as striking as the autos that inspired them. Well worth experiencing for those who love the sleek lines and elegant components of classic cars. Having been to the Mullin, I don't remember the artwork as much as the cars, which suggests that highlighting the art is a worthwhile endeavor. Because these works were not the property of the Carnegie, but rather on loan, photography was not allowed. Up on the second floor, selfies only were recommended, but photos of the museum's permanent collection were okay. The current selections are of the plein air style, with emphasis on California subjects. Cornelis Botke (husband of Jessie Arms Botke, noted Ventura County painter) is represented with one of his landscapes. I thought I recognized the Botke name. Jessie Arms Botke's works are currently featured at the Santa Paula Art Museum. There is a fair amount of unused space, especially on the second floor. Portable display walls could be utilized to expand the number of works available to see. I suppose lighting could be a challenge, but they could surely figure it out. The building itself, in neoclassical style, was the former Oxnard City Library. It presents a grand facade in downtown Oxnard, adjacent to Plaza Park. Free parking in their own lot and adjacent streets. We saw a fashion photo shoot happening out front when we arrived, and it does make a statement as an architecture background. I understand that it's a popular place for photography. As we were leaving, the hostess mentioned that around the corner is their "Artist in Residence" venue, and suggested that we check it out. The current group of pieces there are mostly focused on photographs, and are vibrant, youth-focused, and often raw in emotion and subject matter. Worth checking out, especially for anyone who thinks that art museums are "stuffy".

It was so sweet to have her alternate at times from laying her head on Dear Hubby's shoulder and then mine. Sometimes she would sit up tall and lean forward at certain times in the show. After, she said, "I want to stay until the next one", thinking that the cast would be doing a second show right away the same day. She doesn't yet realize how much energy and effort goes into a performance like this, but I loved the positive reaction. The theater, while small scale and local, nonetheless does a great job of putting on entertainment which captivates their audiences. It's a blessing to have this venue close to home, away from the hassles and expense of going into L.A. Ticket prices are reasonable, parking is free, and the staff is friendly. The large cast managed to sing, dance, and act their way through a beloved classic musical on a smallish stage and made it work. Kudos to the visual technology that makes set decoration a new type of visual art. We're looking forward to seeing "Footloose" at the Arts Center soon.

This is an amazing research museum tucked away on the airport side of Camarillo. You won't just…read moreaccidentally stumble across it, but if you know where you're going it's not hard to find. They occasionally have pubic tours and they're regularly available for researchers. They have one of the most extensive collections of bird eggs in the US (to my knowledge) as well as study skins and taxidermy birds. The rare elephant bird egg has been in the news lately due to one being auctioned for around $65,000. This facility has over a half dozen big beautiful intact eggs. Additionally, they have taxidermy examples of extinct birds such as the passenger pigeon and ivory billed woodpecker. I visited on a public tour day and showed up just as the last tour ended. They kindly allowed me to take a quick walk around and I got to talk to the director as well. Everyone was extremely polite and friendly to me and I very much look forward to returning when I have the time and opportunity to enjoy their displays!
