Love that we have a little gem like the Studio Channel Islands art center in old town Camarillo. I've walked by this building many a times and always was curious what it was like inside. I came for a gala event over the weekend where they rented this space and was excited to check it out. There is plenty of parking as they have their own lot and we also were fine with parking across the street in the free two hour parking spots. The art center is small but a great way to see local art and pottery. They do have single stalls bathrooms inside the studio which is appreciated. It also looked like in one room they had jewelry for sale but I didn't give it a proper look as I was more focused on the artwork and decor. The reason for the docked star is simply because we wandered in as a part of an event that had rented the space and thus there wasn't a whole lot of art on display. What appeared to be up is their around the year collectibles and some small art work pieces. It's definitely better to plan ahead to come here when they are actually running an art exhibit or have an event specific to the art center. At least we got to check it out and have an idea about the space now. Very cool to have a place like this in Camarillo and eager to check them out again in the future so I can leave an updated review. read more

I don't know much about this center yet, but I find it an intriguing concept to repurpose a former school, especially right in the middle of Camarillo's Old Town. We were in Old Town last weekend to visit Mr. Frostee. Driving down Ventura Blvd., I caught a glimpse of red chairs affixed to the fence in the middle of the Art School property. Huh? After we finished our treats at the ice cream shop, we walked over to the Art center. We got up close to the chair installation. It featured a wide array of shapes and styles, all painted red, with words painted on them in simple white letters. Designed to invoke conversation, the vibe continued on to the adjacent patio area. Some of the chairs sit there, where passersby can sit for a while and take in their surroundings. We did just that, enjoying the peacefulness of the late afternoon sunshine on the Old Town buildings. I imagine they offer various classes and perhaps exhibitions within the whole complex. Will have to explore more about the center during open hours. NOTE: Somehow I'd posted this review to a different business. Not sure how that happened, as I believe I used the check in function when I was at the venue. I wanted to check out the artists studios at Channel Islands for a while, but since it's opened only the 1st Saturday of the month, I had to figure out a day when I'd be in the area and make it work. I didn't about the studios in downtown Camarillo area till last summer when we were waiting in line to go to a concert and started a conversation with the people who were ahead of us and they happened to be artists with studios at Channel Islands, so they kindly invited us to visit. I'm glad we finally made it work. The studios are in downtown Camarillo, on Ventura Blvd. they're easy to find. They have a big lot (free), there's also street parking and restrooms on the property. First, you'll see the Blackboard Gallery, which is a cool space for these artists to exhibit, have events, a cool gift shop where you can purchase their art. The Blackboard Gallery is opened on Tuesday-Fridays from 11 am - 5 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm. So if you're in Old town Camarillo during these days, stop by, it's a nice place that showcases interesting art. The Channel Islands studios are on the grounds of an old school, which you can tell while you visit, turned into a funky space where artists in residence live and work. They open their studios once a month (1st Saturday!) or by appointment. Their styles varies, from abstract art to portraits, metal sculpture, jewelry, a bit of everything. Some of the prices are reasonable if you want to purchase a something to hang on the wall of your home. It's fun to hop in each studio and check them out. They organize art talks, summer camps, classes and other cool activities here, check their site for updates if you live in the area. Cool place to check out while visiting Old Town Camarillo. There is the new Blackboard Gallery, where you can see a new art exhibit every month, working artists' studios for about 40 artists and classes for kids and adults. Well, yes, I may be slightly biased because I am an artist member, but this place is amazing! First Saturday of every month, all of the artists with studios on campus have open studio days, with classes, demos, a chance to meet and shmooze with the artists, and also the chance to purchase art directly from the source. It just doesn't get any better. Oh wait, yes it does, because every Saturday, the Camarillo Farmer's Market is right next door, so you can buy fresh fruits and veggies, flowers and kettle corn in the same trip! I can't believe it took me so long to know this place existed, and all the artists and staff are very nice. They are happy to answer questions, while at the same time allow you the freedom to wander and look with no pressure to buy anything. A fun way to spend a Saturday! read more
